The Hardanger fiddle gives a special colour to the Irish tunes, and a depth and wistfulness that creates something really unique. Extraordinary playing
My fiddle teacher showed me this guy today at my lesson. We loved his music so much we spent the whole lesson watching his videos and figuring out how to pronounce his name!!! Just amazing!!!
The three tunes are: Farewell to Ireland, the Maid in the Cherry Tree, and the Mistress of the House. You can hear the same set in the last track of their album "Deadly Buzz," which you can find on itunes. That album makes me sorely tempted to pick up a hardanger fiddle...
The second tune is Maid In the Cherry Tree- it's on Comb Your Hair and Curl It - a cracking album with Catherine McEvoy, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh :)
Its on a cd alright..."Deadly Buzz / Aoibhinn Crónán" by Mick and Caoimhín themselves! this track is number 12 on the cd! Its on iTunes if you want it handy...
C# to me ears, and the first tune is called "Farawell to Erin" D maj version, you can find it in "My love is in america, boston college" played by Brian Conway.
Hi Nadia, there is a few tunes with similar names. I Know that one from the recording "My love is in america" various artist. In this recording the tune is called "Farewell to Erin" www.irishtune.info/tune/606/ (two parts in D major). Farewell to Ireland is a different tune (4 parts in A mix) www.irishtune.info/tune/608/. So you are wrong I´m afraid
I'm sure it's tuned BEBF# as the pipes are likely a B set. The first tune is traditionally in D, so here Caoimhin is playing with standard fingering, just tuned up a whole step; the low string to the fifth. Hardangar fiddle often utilizes E major and the low string tuned to the fifth gives that droning ability.. even older Norwegian players utilize CFCG tuning and play mainly in F! The fiddles must be smaller or the strings longer. Look up Knut Buen playing hardingfele. He recorded an entire album this way. On a standard fiddle this effect can be achieved by tuning ADAE. Then anything played in D or A will cause the low A to ring out a bit more. The Chieftains feature Annbjorg Lien from Norway on their track 'The Fiddling Ladies' from "Tears of Stone". She plays a great old tune called Hildalen, or the Hildale Man.
Long story short... Whatever key you are playing in for hardangar, the tuning is 5-1-5-2 according to the scale. It's for maximum droning and resonance. As opposed to standard fiddle tuned to the fourth (4152). The sympathetic strings are usually tuned 1-5-1-5-3 according to the scale. I'm sure that made zero sense!

Yours ever john
That is quite a flamboyant fiddle. And why does it have so many pegs? What the hell is it, a 10-string fiddle? A bowed sitar?
Ah, it's a hardanger fiddle. I've heard the name before, never knew what it was. Learned something new today.
3 Reels they say, I'm so happy Ok but tell me more

Great that Caoimhin is coming to Kerry for Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh! Failte!
With the Ní Dhomhnaill sisters it should be a Donegal takeover!
Did this sound as awful live as it did in this recording. Barely recognisable melody.
3 years later and this comment is still as embarassing as the day it was posted. Did ya get an ear for music since Mike?
