  • We made it-in the past 19 days, we’ve traveled 2625 miles across Europe by train, bus, and boat all to make it to this one moment right here.
    Cold. Desolate. Beautiful. The northern most city in the world proves that it’s all about the journey AND the destination.

    Hey Josh and Lisa. Hello from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Just wanted to let you know that your video inspired me to book my trip to Svalbard. I bought the tickets slightly over an hour ago. Still feeling mighty surreal and needing some time to let reality set in. But what Josh said about keeping a promise that a younger self made that the older self followed through - chef's kiss! Exactly what I felt but not having the words for. So, thank you.

    I am happy to write that you must go back now. First of all, you did not visit Huset. You also need to visit the only nightclub in Svalbard, serving 2000 people, 2500 snowmobiles and 3000 polar bears during weekends. My suggestion: Late February or March (when some daylight is returning for a snowmobile excursion and a dog-sledging excursion (Tempelfjorden and the calving front of the Van Post ice stream is a winner on shooters with a big chance of seeing polar bears looking for resting seals on sea-ice). Also, the nights are pitch black for Aurora Borealis. And nightclub life. And one of the best wine cellars in all of Europe.
    Anyhow, kudos for your great journey here at the top of Europe both on- and offshore. And bonus kudos for choosing a tent for resting at Svalbard. I hope you managed to get back to the wedding in time-

    Keeping food in tent will attract the bears. Good thing for the fence and hopefully the bears will not work out how to open the gate. What a stunning country.

    • @LisaAndJosh
      @LisaAndJosh  Год назад

      yeah we found that super interesting too - they don't have enough refrigerator space inside the building, so they make everyone keep their food in their tents. it was absolutely beautiful!

    Hi guys! When I saw the thumbnail for this video, I thought it was a pretty cool effect (i.e. the red/orange hue). It turns out, that was the effect from your tent! The scenery and wildlife was so beautiful. And your walk with the dogs looked like so much fun! Congrats on completing the quest.

    I forgot to tell you that the last time somebody was killed by a polar bear it was in the camp site you slept. They put up the fence after the incident so I think what you did walking and biking to the city unarmed was dangerous.

    You missed a lot. When I went to Svalbard last year we visited Pyramiden and Barentsburg that are Russian towns, one active and one being a ghost town since being abandoned in 1998. To go to these places was like time travel back to the Soviet Union and a much more special experience than Longyearbyen. Another interesting fact is that Svalbard is visa free so if your Schengen visa expires you can go to Svalbard instead of going home. Because of this the largest and third largest non-Norwegian communities in Longyearbyen are from Thailand and the Philippines.They have found their paradise in Longyearbyen with high salaries and a generally high living standard. Thais mostly work as cleaners and chamber maids as Filipinos work as waiters. There are around 115 Thais and 100 Filipinos in Longyearbyen and many of them have stayed for many years without going home. It is interesting how people from tropical countries thrive in such a cold place.

    Svalbard is a tax-free zone. The prices are high, but skip the tax then much get cheaper than in mainland Norway.
