  • The Use of special plants to induce altered states of consciousness has been documented since the dawn of civilization. In South America, many indigenous tribes and recently religious groups spread throughout the world continue to have a spiritual practice that is centered around the drinking of a brewed infusion of plants known as AYAHUASCA, also as Yage, or as Santo Daime as it is called in the Santo Daime Church.
More than ten years ago we did a series of video episodes with interviews with shamans in the rainforest and people from the Daime Church in Brazil, Peru, the US, and in THE NETHERLANDS. Our intention was to inform people and shine a light on the ayahuasca phenomenon and the cultures that have and are using it. According to the people interviewed the "vine of the soul," has healing benefits and its transformative power has the potential to promote well-being for people and the planet.

That does not look like ayahuasca. Heavily watered down. Aya is thick. I’m curious what recipe this is. Strange to see them in formal outfits. I’m usually on the floor and bouts of purging

They created a religion around the sacrament and they take it periodically therefore it is more diluted.

Brews are highly variable in consistency. Ours is called Santo Daime and is prepared with only Rainha (chacruna), the vine Jagube and water, and fire of course. The plants are layered into big pans, seven layers each and cooked for several hours and straining, whereafter this liquid is added to another pan of fresh material and the process repeated. The brew is then reduced somewhat resulting in primeiro grau, a daime of thinner consistency that is nonetheless very potent. The thickness depends on the reduction and its correlation to potency is highly variable depending on plant material, preparation and many other spiritual elements. People new to the church often have a response similar to your description, but with time those on this path tend to adapt to learn to work with it somewhat differently, whereby we attempt to stay in our lines, and continue singing and dancing. Personally, I play the guitar throughout, so if I have to go purge it does leave a gap in the music and I generally do my best to power through - it can be hard work, but afterwards when the wave passes it's as if I've purged in a different way. The uniforms are kind of like spiritual armour, and to us bring an element of unity and fraternity, and humility to the divine. They are also highly symbolic, for example the crowns of the women represent the queen of the forest, who we understand gave the doctrine and hymns to the founder of the Santo Daime, Mestre Irineu, beginning in the early 20th century. :)

Olá, I'm from Rio de janeiro. Nice documentary. I'd like to make a correction about Paulo Roberto Church, it's called " Céu do Mar". VIRGEM DA luz is another one here in Rio. Now I have my own group here, I was from Jardim Praia da Beira Mar church, it was where i begun. Now I'm following Centro Livre Caminho do Sol, Acre. It's more close to the Alto Santo line.

For traditional SD nobody profits and only costs are covered by what ppl are able to contribute. Resulting in typically far lower costs than contemporary ayahuasca ceremonies in the west. Some donations are collected to directly support Amazonian communities. There are now some SD inspired groups that may call themselves SD but are more luxury kind of lying down/retreat type experiences etc, but I don't know about these.

Wow man, didnt mention anything about them feeding the stuff to their children basically from birth I get you didnt wanna portray them as "controversial" (I personally think theyre on the right track, the kids end up fine) but that's purposely omitting important information to skew the viewers' opinions.
This isnt a documentary, and now I honestly don't care how mean it sounds... get a better editor too. And maybe an actual narrator while youre at it (Im quite a good orator, Ive got decent mics/equipment from playing music). Im sorry mate but come on...

    • @kaicartwright9983

Wow deeeep - different strokes for different folks my dude! What gets to me sometimes is when new age people have some kind of concept that people who are religious are necessarily somewhat less evolved or spiritual, but they can't see that they are the ones on the ego trip because they feel like their understanding of spirituality is better agh... It's just that huge amounts of people in the world are religious, and have vibrant spiritual lives where they connect to god, the infinite etc. Whilst religions have been and are of course used to subjugate and control people, that doesn't mean that non-religious forms of spirituality are inherently better or more valid, they're just different. I disagree fundamentally with pushing one's worldview on others, and think that everyone should be free to come to their own relationship to god and a spiritual life. But yes for us the Santo Daime (ayahuasca) is a great teacher, helping us to self-reflect in different ways, care for each other and be forces for good in the world, outside the session, where we as much as possible remain connected to the divine. We have a strong focus on maintaining balance between being grounded on the earth and aware of the macrocosm and the divine, as represented in the archetype of Christ, rooted in divine love.
