Been using an iPad mini as my only device for about 2 years. Prefer Office 365/OneDrive, as they work slightly better offline than Apples option. Use phone as a hotspot, a few cables, big Anker battery and charger. Don’t do video, just stills. Works fine for specialised photo shoots, when mobility is important
As a long time travel photographer I have downsized from carrying 20 KG of equipment to an iPad mini and IPhone 13 Pro. Just finished an 8 month trip with a carry on back pack only…and love this portability and freedom we have now. Mind you I don’t do much video editing. But photo editing on a iPad mini is amazing. I traded in my iPad Pro last year and have no regrets…

I have an iPad pro and surface pro 9. The surface pro 9 would have been up to this task with no problem. Latest windows updates have made sleep battery drain practically zero. Truly making some amazing strides. Great keyboard. Pen. It really is the best tablet.
Great video. I appreciated the idea of seeing the iPad as an "only computer while traveling," as it was a concern I had about it being so small. Worry has been turned to confidence, now. I have wanted to buy the mini, but my 2018 11" iPad Pro is still rockin', so I'm going to wait for the next revision of the iPad mini.

I have gone multiple trips from the states to Eastern Europe with only my iPad Mini 4 & iPad Air 4 together as my computing devices. Never missed my MacBook. I use my iPads far more than I do my MacBook. Having a bluetooth keyboard & mouse has been a must.
I’ll stick with my iPad M1 Air, iPhone 12 and Osmo Action 3 and 360 X2 for travelling but I get your point, we do live in an age of amazing portable tech. Even the editing is getting easier with AI, love your videos it’s the sense of fun👍
What probably happened is that he didn't make the project long enough and recording will automatically stop once it reaches the end of the project. So it was probably user error more than the iPad or Garage Band.
You know what? You’re probably onto something there. And if that is the case, GarageBand is utterly useless. What a daft decision - that isn’t how Logic works (the timeline should be infinite).
@@MarkEllisReviews I don't know if there is any adjustment or template in GB where you can set the project to live recording with no time limit... As far as I know, you can preset the number of measures, but never used it like a recorder device...

My question is the following: in a real world scenario the size difference between the iPad mini and the iPad Pro 11” is not that much especially considering how much stuff you got in your bag. Why go for the mini and not the pro? The would also enable you to do some editing if it came to that. Not an optimal solution but I could do it, the mini couldn’t at all.
The issue is all the accessories to make an iPad mini work for this trip took more volume than a MacBook Pro. It kind of defeats the purpose of an iPad mini if you have to bring along a huge keyboard and battery to make it work. Of course if doing it that way makes you happy then that’s all that matters. When it comes down to it, most things aren’t serious enough to need maximum efficiency. Sometimes doing something different can be more enjoyable. Keep up the good work making enjoyable videos!
At least you spotted the point of this video 😉 Although I can confirm that (audio interface aside) the iPad mini setup I took with me was considerably lighter and required far less space in my backpack than my 16-inch MacBook Pro. Thanks for the kind words!
Excellent video Mark! This form factor that you experimented with is I think going to be the only form factor of the future. The fact that Apple puts the same processor in the iPad and Macbook makes this possible. You proved that with pairing of a keyboard with an iPad you essentially have a Macbook-almost. As soon as Apple makes some changes in iPadOS you will have a Macbook tablet.
Couldn’t you just record to the mix pre at his studio as the same time as having it plugged in to the iPad as an interface? Any computer based DAW setup recording for that amount of time would likely require redundancy, and I’d be interested to see if maybe another app could consistently record for that long (maybe the new upcoming version of Logic for iOS or Cubasis). As a recording engineer, wherever there’s a chance for redundancy in recording live events, I take it, so I wouldn’t necessarily knock the iPad for that as anything can cause any system to fail. Also would have loved to see if there were any optimisations put in place to facilitate the recording (like you would on a laptop/desktop). I.e. managing ram, turning off unnecessary peripherals, etc. But all in all, I enjoyed watching your experiment, and hope to carry out my own tests with my iPad mini going forward.

Great video! I seriously can't decide which iPad I like more, but the more I use my mini 6, the more in love with it I am. It's the perfect size. They brought back the split keyboard, so that's great for me! I like typing on that screen even better than on my iPhone 13 Pro. My only concern is that I have the 64GB version. So, curious, did the iPad just stopped recording your iPad because of power, or was it because it ran out of storage? Or some other unknown reason. Thank you again for sharing!!

Great video! I find this sort of content, testing the capability of an iPad as a main device really interesting. For me the 11in iPad Pro is just about the perfect size for most things and the capability of the M1 processor is amazing. I understand your point about iPadOS though. Fingers crossed iPadOS 17 makes some improvements.
I noticed that there weren't many people around when you were filming outside with the iPad Mini. Were you nervous at all setting it down places? I would have a little mat to set it on just to keep it clean! I'm a clean freak when it comes to my Apple gear, but not so much with other things. I rarely take it out of the house even.
The only problem I’ve had is Microsoft outlook not working like I want. Formatting email fonts, not having contact lists. That, and video playing working like I want with external display - which wouldn’t affect me if I use only iPad.
I see that a lot of tech reviewers are very happy with the iPad mini, i like the size very much but I have a problem with the size, it’s not the best device for pdf reading and neither for video consumption, but it’s a great device, there are the only two reasons of why I use instead the 11inch pro
tried the mini, found it was just too small when settled in. Can’t give up my pro 12.9” with mkb. too many comforts that aren’t worth giving up once you get settled in

Sureley an 11 inch iPad Pro or Air with the Magic Keyboard/Trackpad would be far more powerful, convenient and lighter than the iPad Mini set up (plus the Nuphy Keyboard and Logitech Mouse). I have the M1 iPad Air with Magic Keyboard and its become my EDC, my MacBook M2 Pro stays home 99% of the time

Even on a desktop computer with Traktor software, recording has been limited to 1 hour. This has something to do with software limitations I believe. I use an external SD card recorder because I can't trust a computing device to record my long mixtapes.

So i am getting the M1 iPad Air 5 as i don’t need the iPad Pro anymore (i have the m1 pro macbook pro) guess i will finally get a ipad in purple ^^

Great video. Was going to take my IPad mini to New York but instead took iPad Pro 11 M2 with the Magic Keyboard. Was able to edit Cannon and Sony RAW photos in Lightroom with no problems. Was a great travel device.
So I’m not the only one who’s disappointed with the iPhone 14 Pro Max battery life? You mentioned it in the video and might be worth a video of its own. The 13 Pro Max used to get me through a day of heavy use. The 14 Pro Max barely lasts half the day and that’s with always-on display and pro motion turned off.
I would be much helped if screen showed name of each device mentioned. I have watched two great videos by mark and I still don't know the portable kb he rabbits on about.

Your accessories defeat the purpose of carrying a light device like the iPad 6. You need to go all the way with the light spirit I believe. Otherwise this is just a challenge without much rooting in reality. Thanks for the video anyway, this was fun
@@MarkEllisReviews I’m seeing a lot of comments like that and I just don’t get it 😆 there is a “bare minimum” here needed, and I absolutely would have packed the same things for these tasks-and if anybody thinks this is still too much, they should remember that there is still some wiggle room to get even smaller accessories to go with (flatter keyboards, smaller travel mice, a Zoom audio interface, etc.). This is a great little setup as-is though, I mean what’s not to love? ;) Too bad that the Garage Band recording failed. I’m curious, did it *look* like it was recording the tracks, and then nothing show up later? Or did it just not even work from the get-go? Imagine what it will be like when the iPad mini gets the M1, and and you can do extended monitor support! (the real deal, not just the mirroring ;) ) these portable monitors coming out are so thin, and would take up barely any extra space in the backpack….

I love my iPad mini and I understand this is a bit of a thought experiment. But you lost the plot when you are toting a full size mechanical keyboard and all that other stuff. At some point you must have realized that the MacBook Air would have accomplished this in a smaller form factor than even iPad + keyboard.
Feel with the amount of accessories you’ve bought with you. You’ve defeated the object of the challenge. Would have been more interesting with just the iPad mini, Smart Keyboard case and pencil. Not even the microphone audio kit as you could have tested the internal microphones and a podcast creatingapp on the mini. The amount of weight you’ve bought with you with just the keyboard means you may as well just bought your MacBook.
@@MarkEllisReviews why not trying a dedicated recording app like ferrite? My setup would be using a handheld recorder (zoom h6 or even smaller ones) and doing post production on the iPad mini.
Bringing all the “accessories” kind of defeats the purpose imo, no? If you brought the pencil and AirPods, that would be reasonable. Anyway, my 2 cents… and by the way, I use my mini exclusively on some trips and rely on voice for typing; a few edits to clean things up, by you can get by without a keyboard for the most part. Good video nonetheless.

Agree. What stuck out to me was that for a review of the ipad mini’s capabilities…there were several items mentioned…that had no use case or connection with the ipad. For example: Ipods: How were these items used in conjunction with the ipad? Did you consume music/videos via the ipad with the ipods connected? Did you review your podcast recording using your ipods? Bose headphones: As per the ipods. Mouse: you mentioned you took a mouse with you, but didn’t need it; ok, you should expand on that point. Why didn’t you use the mouse? Was the touchscreen/keyboard experience render the mouse irrelevant? Anker charger: Did you use it? Given your Anker charger has a british plug (ie type G), whilst in Belgium they use the type E plug, unless you (or someone else) had an adapter the charger would have been of limited use…? I get why you took some products which have clearly identifiable use cases: the keyboard for typing, the screen protector and pencil for note taking etc…but other items (ie the ones I listed above)…yeah I don’t see why they were mentioned…?
...but, of course, you also have your iPhone 14 Pro Max as well as your latest Apple Watch, oui-?! But, with all the latest modern Tech, I don't understand why it is necessary to waste Time, Money and the aggravation of [potential] accidents and injury of Travel just to do an "in-person" podcast. I would have used Ferrite. It's never let me down when I have had to record student speaking examinations.
I find Stage Manager works fine for me on my big iPad Pro. The Mini, I use like you do, basically like a traditional tablet.

Could you do a full review on the keyboard? Like compared to the logitech combo touch and magic keyboards.

Made me very happy seeing you travel to my country! I wanted to get the iPad Mini 6 for myself to replace my 2018 iPad Pro but the ui scaling and lack of stage manager is not cutting it for me. So i am getting the M1 iPad Air 5 as i don’t need the iPad Pro anymore (i have the m1 pro macbook pro) guess i will finally get a ipad in purple ^^

Great video. Was going to take my IPad mini to New York but instead took iPad Pro 11 M2 with the Magic Keyboard. Was able to edit Cannon and Sony RAW photos in Lightroom with no problems. Was a great travel device.

So I’m not the only one who’s disappointed with the iPhone 14 Pro Max battery life? You mentioned it in the video and might be worth a video of its own. The 13 Pro Max used to get me through a day of heavy use. The 14 Pro Max barely lasts half the day and that’s with always-on display and pro motion turned off.
Would like to hear more about podcast recording options with an iPad and why your experiment failed?

Your accessories defeat the purpose of carrying a light device like the iPad 6. You need to go all the way with the light spirit I believe. Otherwise this is just a challenge without much rooting in reality. Thanks for the video anyway, this was fun

@@MarkEllisReviews I’m seeing a lot of comments like that and I just don’t get it 😆 there is a “bare minimum” here needed, and I absolutely would have packed the same things for these tasks-and if anybody thinks this is still too much, they should remember that there is still some wiggle room to get even smaller accessories to go with (flatter keyboards, smaller travel mice, a Zoom audio interface, etc.). This is a great little setup as-is though, I mean what’s not to love? ;)
Too bad that the Garage Band recording failed. I’m curious, did it *look* like it was recording the tracks, and then nothing show up later? Or did it just not even work from the get-go?
Imagine what it will be like when the iPad mini gets the M1, and and you can do extended monitor support! (the real deal, not just the mirroring ;) ) these portable monitors coming out are so thin, and would take up barely any extra space in the backpack….
The iPad works amazingly the box came a little dirty, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA no plastic wrap, but the box was sealed and had everything else in the box along with the wrapping, the iPad itself is gorgeous, I got the yellow 64g game storage is good for me along with Socials and school stuff. No scratches or marks came with the charger and box fast speed, and if you are buying a pen get the 1st gen don’t make the mistake I did !!
I love my iPad mini and I understand this is a bit of a thought experiment. But you lost the plot when you are toting a full size mechanical keyboard and all that other stuff. At some point you must have realized that the MacBook Air would have accomplished this in a smaller form factor than even iPad + keyboard.

Feel with the amount of accessories you’ve bought with you. You’ve defeated the object of the challenge. Would have been more interesting with just the iPad mini, Smart Keyboard case and pencil. Not even the microphone audio kit as you could have tested the internal microphones and a podcast creatingapp on the mini.
The amount of weight you’ve bought with you with just the keyboard means you may as well just bought your MacBook.
You did spot that I only really used the iPad mini and the NuPhy keyboard, right?

@@MarkEllisReviews why not trying a dedicated recording app like ferrite? My setup would be using a handheld recorder (zoom h6 or even smaller ones) and doing post production on the iPad mini.

Bringing all the “accessories” kind of defeats the purpose imo, no? If you brought the pencil and AirPods, that would be reasonable. Anyway, my 2 cents… and by the way, I use my mini exclusively on some trips and rely on voice for typing; a few edits to clean things up, by you can get by without a keyboard for the most part. Good video nonetheless.

@@MarkEllisReviews Didn't mean to offend. I understand why you need sponsors/partnerships. I learnt nothing new here though, iPad can be used to write emails on a train, the camera is okay for regular usage, and it cannot be used as a driver for recording podcasts. Big fan of Nuphy though.

What stuck out to me was that for a review of the ipad mini’s capabilities…there were several items mentioned…that had no use case or connection with the ipad.
For example:
Ipods: How were these items used in conjunction with the ipad? Did you consume music/videos via the ipad with the ipods connected? Did you review your podcast recording using your ipods?
Bose headphones: As per the ipods.
Mouse: you mentioned you took a mouse with you, but didn’t need it; ok, you should expand on that point. Why didn’t you use the mouse? Was the touchscreen/keyboard experience render the mouse irrelevant?
Anker charger: Did you use it? Given your Anker charger has a british plug (ie type G), whilst in Belgium they use the type E plug, unless you (or someone else) had an adapter the charger would have been of limited use…?
I get why you took some products which have clearly identifiable use cases: the keyboard for typing, the screen protector and pencil for note taking etc…but other items (ie the ones I listed above)…yeah I don’t see why they were mentioned…?
Because I took them with me?
