Great job! I had to chuckle when you were using the Dremel on the stars. I had the greatest urge to blow the dust away. I set up a small fan to keep the dust away from my work area. Of course I wear a dust mask.
Great video- when I’m cutting the pencil line separating the two colors, I just cut along the pencil line with a sharp utility knife- stain up to the line and stain won’t cross it.
Excellent video. I would try a plastic straw for glue removal on the face of the flag. I crease it with a utility knife and then use the crease to scrape it up. Works great and it won't take off the stain.
Thank you! And thank you for your entry! Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! You should definitely try and make one. Any questions just leave me a comment.
Thank you for your entry. Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! @awesome build..Thanks John! If there is a different flag build you would like to see please comment and I will see what I can do.
Flag Giveaway. Nice job. I make flags also and I have a tip for you when you glue the stripes put the glue close to the back of the strip, then the glue will not come out of the front of the flag for easy clean up. Take Care
Thank you for your entry. Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! @Nice job...Thanks Jim! Appreciate the tip! I will share it and give you a shout out in the next video (Shou Sugi Ban) still doing edits. If you have any other tips please share or if you would like to see a certain flag build comment and I will see what I can do. Have a great day!
Flag Giveaway Thanks so much for the step by step. I've been toying around with the idea of building one of these. Thirty years in the service ( retired now ) and for some reason I don't have one. Wondering how I'm going to approach it since over a 30 year period I've stood every color. Might give me an idea of how to incorporate every color into one flag. Thanks for the video. Liked, Subbed, and commented. U-403
Thank You for your Service! If you have any questions with your build just leave me a comment or shoot me an email at RWBFlags1776@gmail.com Ive seen flags with multiple colors where they split a stripe in the middle on a diagonal and cut the second color into the stripe. This can give you two colors per stripe if it helps. Also, on my first video uploaded (Protectors LEMC) I have a blue and a red line. Unsure how many colors you will be using. If many you may need to build a couple flags which would be cool too! Thank you for your entry! Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers!
Thank you for your entry. Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! @Great video...Thanks! If there is a different flag or a certain section of the build you would like to see in better detail please comment and I will see what I can do.

Thank you for your entry! Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! @Incredible & Stunning Job...Thank you very much Barbie! Now you can build one and if you have any questions leave a comment or hit me up on email rwbflags1776@gmail.com. I also do sell theses and ship within the USA if you would like to purchase one instead of building. I think you should try and build one if you have the interest. Or maybe you could be the winner.?.! I do this on the side as hobby I find it actually relaxing lol. Thank you for Subscribing!
Beautiful flag. I don't know what you charge for your flags, but I would have to charge $50 just for the hand carved stars. I can only justify painting them or running them on the CNC. Any technique of making a flag is a good thing.
Thank you! I do charge more for the carvings but its personal preference of what someone is looking for. I actually find it to be relaxing so I don't mind doing it. Agreed, any technique of making flags is a good thing.
In response to tricks for marking the Union. I started off the same way, painters tape. Hated it. I switched to hammering in a utility blade on the three boards over my pencil lines just like you. Had mixed results. Maybe you’re more precise and don’t have this issue, but I found that after I stained when I pulled my blades that many times I would end up with an uneven line. Either the blades were slightly left or right of the mark or the angle wasn’t perfect and the blade didn’t hammer in at a true 12-6. Made my brain hurt. Easiest fix I found was to take a solid straight edge, I used my steel stencil so I didn’t have to bother with measuring, and I held it in place just like you do with the Mylar stencil. Then I’d take a utility knife or exacto knife and scored all 7 Union boards straight down to give a much cleaner line. Then I would go back and hammer in the 3 blades. Just ever so slightly scoring the line first also makes it a lot easier to hammer the blades in so you can get a little deeper into the wood and not have them pop out. That was a long comment to say “score the Union line before you hammer the blades in” lol.
Absolutely but then it would be machine made and not handmade. Both are great ways to go about it just comes down to personal preference and the look you are going for. Appreciate the great question!
@@redwhiteblue1787 I guess it comes down to what a person considers 'handmade'. To me using a CNC is no different than using any other tool that woodworkers use on a daily basis. A saw, sander, lathe, jointer, planer, etc. They all require some degree of 'hands-on' to get the job done.
@@fstoll3 Sounds like your trying to convince yourself. I have to kindly disagree. Programing software for a machine to o all the work is not handmade but CNC are awesome machines.
CNC are awesome! So much you can do with them and have a perfect designs but I aIso do like the hand engraving gives it that personal touch. Im sure if I was producing mass quantities of flags it definitely be done on a CNC :)
Flag Giveaway. Great instructive video and finished product ! Have you ever tried using the Dremel router with your Dremel for the outlining and carving? I've considered it and was wondering if it's been tried ? As you say in the video you use two hands to keep the tool from taking off on you and I was wondering if the router base would help?? Thanks
Thank you for your entry! Now we need to hit 1000 subscribers! I do have the Dremel router and have seen people use this when carving the stars. I did try it and it was chewing up the plastic stencil...I just need to practice or be more careful. For quickness this will work but I do prefer to do it by hand...think it gives the piece a little something extra...that's just my personal preference. I do use a very old Dremel from the 80's and it may have more power than the new ones as I see people using the Dremel 3000 with one hand. I am unsure about this just a guess as I have never tried a newer one. Also, they do sell an attachment (flex shaft) it’s about the width of a marker and this looks easier to control the Dremel. When this one dies, I will pick up a new one but probably try to repair it first if possible lol...I am a believer of use what you have. I may do a video in the future of carving the stars with the Dremel router to show everyone options. Great comments / questions! Thank you!
@@redwhiteblue1787 The flex shaft makes all the difference in carving the stars. When your old Dremel dies, it will be worth buying a new one with the flex shaft, believe me! 😆
@@gaylewilliams7353 Funny enough you say...my 1980's Dremel died last week during a custom logo build (video will come out after Christmas sometime.) The metal brushes wore out and were the last ones I had on hand also they are discontinued. I found 3 on eBay in Australia but deliver date was December 30th and the build was commissioned to be completed before Christmas. So, to Amazon I went and they overnighted me the Dremel 3000 with the flex shaft. It is AWESOME! I am loving the flex shaft for the engravings.

I’ve found that the Crimson looks better and is more consistent with 3-4 coats. But as you’ve stated, it is personal preference. Nice work though.
What are the dimensions of the Chicago Fire Dept logo?
As much as I appreciate the amount of work it takes to do the hand engraving, you need a CNC!
