Good job, dude. Finally a guy who walks you through the steps, even with measurements, as he goes so you can follow along. Even if there is a plan for sale like most guys do, this would be nice for all builds.
I'm not here to make money off you guys. I find greater joy seeing all the messages on my IG or FB of a viewer who made an awesome flag with my help. Keep building!
@@JCBuilds I would have never been able to build the flag if I didn’t watch your video like 20 times. I’m a Phillies fan if that helps. I wanted to share the pic of the flag but it won’t let me
What size screws do you use to put in the braces in the back of the flag? Also what size drill bit are you using to drill the pilot holes in the brace. Great video BTW.
Awesome!!! Glad it was easy to follow and helped to make something you can be proud of. Soon people will be asking to buy them from you!! The more you make the faster you'll get too
When you first start the stars will probably take you around 40-60 minutes (my first flag was around that time.) depending how many you make I was able to get the stars done in 20 mins. In total start to finish about 2 hours to make a flag when you're starting. 1 hour when you get comfortable
I've been buying extra large boxes from Lowe's and cutting it open and wrapping the box around the flag. Using glue and packaging tape to seal it up. However I still haven't found a good way to package and ship so I try to avoid it as much as possible. UPS near me (Philadelphia) has been the cheapest option since usps has size restrictions
If you hover too long over a spot it'll burn more making things look blotchy. You need to keep the consistency steady. you can always go back over it to make the burns darker. Keep practicing and you'll get the techniques. Just sand it and start over
Great looking flag!! I’ve started making flags only a few weeks ago so I’m not good at carving out the stars ⭐️ yet!! I’ve put the star stencil in place & scraped them with a small wire brush, came out a lot better than I thought!!!
In the video these are standard 1x2x6 dimensional pine strips from Lowes. The exact size is 0.75"x1.5"x6'. 13 stripes come out to 19.5 inches. Even if you used exact 1x2 lumber that only comes out to 26 inches. You may have too many stripes in your flags causing the problem
You messaged once. I hope you can get back to me again. I actually did the stripes the way you said. And everything is amazing. I made the “white stripes” a little too dark but you can tell the difference. I’m having a hard time with the brace. What size wood did you use, and nails? After that. It will be all finished. Thank you sir!
I use 1x2 pieces long enough to cover the whole flag with a quarter inch of space at top and bottom. Should be 19". Clamp the flag together for a tight fit. Add glue to the brace and then I use a Brad nail 1" 1/4 and add 2 nails per stripe
I used 1 1/4 inch star bit construction screws. Gauge doesn't matter just make sure you pre drill your holes. I recently switched to wood glue and 1 1/4 inch Brad nails. Holds up the same it's just faster
You'd have to do you best to look something up online if not you'll have to make your own. Using the projector method to trace on a large area is pretty easy if you have access to a cheap one
No need to glue the stripes together and worry about squeeze out. I recently switched to gluing the back braces and Brad nailing them to the flag replacing the screws. I only switched because it was faster. Which ever way you prefer will hold up for years. Thanks for watching. Brad nail size 16g 1-1/4in
I bought mine from Amazon. For this flag size you want to get anything close to or around 14.75 inches by 10.5 inches. It's alright it's not exact. Just do your best to make sure the stars are centered for the best results
I ran into an issue with my stencil not lining up with the bottom stripe! All the measurements are correct and it’s the right sized 1x2, it’s almost like I need a 14.75x 12 stencil! I dunno lol I’ll center the 14.75x10 and see how it turns out
I prefer the minwax 3 in one poly. I'm pretty sure it's water based. However I used both water and oil based. Both look good, just comes down to how long you want to wait
Great job in this, I’ve done a couple myself and am still working out the kinks, I’m going to steal your way of hanging with the wire. Also what did you use to do the signature on the back?
Burn markers. My cousin bought one for me I'm pretty sure you can grab them at Michaels, ac Moore, or Walmart though. You can definitely get them on Amazon
Aweso.e, building this tomorrow. 1 quick question though. After you burn the wood, did you wire brush ir sand the burnt crispy wood off before you added poly? I've always scraped the wood after burning
Some flags I wire brush some I don't. It's all about desired effect and personal preference. I never sand though I always mess it up when I start sanding.
Hey bro, thanks for liking the content. An Aussie flag could be pretty easy you just need to use alot of painters tape. Just burn the whole flag like a light stripe. I'll work on an instructable
I bought pine from home depot. Union is 14.75x10.5 so I looked for a union with the closest dimensions on Amazon. It's OK If the stencil is a little off. As long as the stars are centered it will look good
Good video, one thing I would suggest for next time, After your burn, put a coat of spray eager on before carving. It will help seal.the char and not rub carbon all over the the flag.
I used to use red minwax stain but switched over to a super light coat of krylon spray pain. The exact name is in my color flag build video. I forget off hand but I think it's Fire Red
Hope you can respond to this cause I’m working on it. I just have a couple questions. What did you do to make the braces. Did you use screws? And did you just burn it longer to get that “darker effect”?
Hey. Practice on scrap wood. The slower you move the torch the darker the burn will be. Practicing on scrap will help you get the desired colors. The braces on the back is 1x2 wood just like the strips cut to about 19 inches. I recommend burning the back for a finished look. Currently I use wood glue and 1.25in 16g Brad nails for the braces but you can definitely use screws like I did in the video. Just make sure to pre dril your holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Lay the brace on top of the laid out flag and use a sharpie to mark the screw locations in order to make it easier to predrill.
@@JCBuilds hey sir. Thanks for the insight. I definitely noted what you said. It’s going slow cause I work full time. But I have everything written down for the small details. I’m just nervous about the drill the holes. I’ll ask maybe you said it I didn’t understand. Did you drill holes smaller then the nails? Cause like you said. You don’t want it to split.
If the boards cup I always burn the back side until it evens out. Although if you clamp the stripes hard enough the friction will hold any warped board in place
I switched the process to glue and Brad nails on the back. I chose to not glue between the slats because of squeeze out ruining the front of the flag. The very first flag I've made is about 3.5 years old now and still holding strong. It was made exactly how this tutorial is laid out! Happy building!
A drill, clamps, and speed square are essential tools for all shops. While essential they are also all extremely basic. However you are more than welcome to swap the drill for a screw driver.
Unfortunately the dremel will be the most expensive part of the build. You can however opt out for a $5 can of spray paint. But if you want the premium look of carved stars you'll have to invest in a new tool
dude is so efficient with his time on the stars!
I sold those for my family members and I sold A LOT and I just want to thank you very much

Yo absolutely awesome, just made my own flag exactly the way you did. Great length of the video and way to keep it easy. Thank you dude!
I'm glad the video was simple and easy to follow. Hang that flag with pride you made it!!
Thank you! Helped so much for my school project!

Amazing! No CNC! Much appreciated! Great WOODWORKING (vs computer programming) video!
We don't need a CNC to make some beautiful projects!
What cutter bit are you using for carving the stars?
I use a Dremel 106 and 107 engraving bit
And i use the dremel flex rotary tool with the bits. It makes controlling the dremel way easier for carving
Could you make one of these for me and ship it to the UK
Thank you! This video is so direct and easy to follow. I cant wait to try this out!

Love the flag. Can you post a link to the hanging hardware you used?

Amazon. Which ever stencil is closest to the union size. 14.75x10.5

What kind of polyurethane did you use? Glossy or satin
Minwax satin
Or semi gloss

Brad nail size 16g 1-1/4in
