Rebuilding idler wheels off tracked tractor

- In this video I rebuild and repair idler wheels from a Trax master tracked tractor.
The idler wheels had run out of oil and had destroyed the bearings and also the shaft that holds the wheel on. The customer had managed to find some new wheels but unfortunately, they were the wrong overall diameter, they were unable to find the ones the right diameter so a repair was needed on the old wheels.
After knocking the old bearings out, it turns out the centre bores weren’t too badly damaged. One side of one of the wheels had damaged where the circlip groove was but the other was okay.
The damaged wheel was put in the 4 jaw chuck in the lathe and over bored, it was then rebuilt back up with weld and the circlip groove was re cut.
The wheels could then be rebuilt with the new parts out of the wheels that were too small, luckily the parts were interchangeable with a bit of modifying to the shafts.
My new Siegmund 8.7 extreme system 28, 3 x 1.5m fixture table also arrived this week so that was unpacked and put together. Already came in useful for these wheels.
Hope you enjoyed the video

Oliver, I think your new table will be a great asset to your shop. I am 81 yrs. old and worked around machinery and equipment many years here in West Texas, but I learn a lot watching you work. You are a very skilled young man and great to watch.
Love how your dad randomly pops up now and again .I miss mine and i know if i had my time again with him and a shop like yours we would have such a great time tinkering and repairing things . Congratz on the welding table .Maybe a new bigger lathe next? Think Those round magnetic things are for round bar holding
Congratulations on new welding table! It's a thing straight from a fairy tale: both a beauty and a beast!
Next up, I think a jib crane would be a nice addition to your shop, located within reach of your fixture table. BTW, I look forward to your latest video every week
Weld just the race
The face
D id you get the race out
That's a cracking welding table. Must have set you back quite a few bucks. It will last you a literal lifetime.
I don't think the table was cracking, I couldn't see a single crack in it, as well as that I was also a bit curious, what is the average lifespan of a Literal?
I was curious too so looked it up. If it’s the one I think it is £6,272 ex VAT. Unsure if that includes accessories. Made in Germany I think.
He doesn't mess about are oli when it comes to tools
I had a quick look, well over £10K with VAT. That's called investing in the business.
@@billdoodson4232yes indeed. I hope Oliver got a bit of a discount for plugging the supplier and the manufacturer in his video.
It’s great you are getting all different types of engineering and fabrication work now, Onwards and upward Ollie 🇬🇧🇮🇪.
Nice table! Never put yourself down, you don't do yourself justice it would have been a brave person to take that job on in the 1st place. Can't understand why people don't take the time to check their equipment, it saves a whole lot of money and time. Kurtis over at CEE also hates it when he gets parts that are dirty, I don't think customers realise that, you spending the time cleaning all adds to how much the job costs. 👍
Crazy, but true. I learned that sometimes it's less money to run machine into the ground then it is to interrupt production. Not always and it's case by case at best,,,,,and every time I had to call the shot on it it broke heart to see a good machine destroyed and laid up for weeks, that could have been running like new for months, if we could take it off line for 8 hours.
Double reply here. = What materiel is the table? I am an old acorn plate guy and they are pretty rough against that surface plate of yours. - (Yours cant be resistant to spatter, right?)
Well done on the new table score Ollie. Onwards and upwards brother 👍
You the man Snowy. Congrats again on your new table. Can’t wait to see all your fab jobs coming up.
What a well executed 'fix' for a knackered piece. I hope the customer was 'very' pleased you saved them a fortune. A gantry crane would be a good edition to save your back. 👍
Nice table, next level this will help your business tremendously. Class act.
You are an exceptionally talented person. Congratulations on the new addition of an Esco table.
That’s another save for one of your clients! It many shops would do the type of detailed engineering modifications that you undertake to keep old stuff working.
Nice add with the fabrication jig table .
I remember cutting firewood like that about 30y ago, minus all the shielding for safety 🥴 that brought back some childhood memories.
The new fixture table looks ace, hope it works well for you for many many years.
Nice to see you are buying new stuff for your work shop this will make your life easer in the long run
Given there were 4 holes in that disc, I think I'd have stuck the chuck jaws in there for better stability / rigidity... 🤔
Nice vid ! 🤗
😎👍☘🍻
I did say why I couldn’t do that 😉
@@snowballengineering sorry man, I musta missed it I was having me dinner as I was watchin and my priorities were temporarily elsewhere ! 😋😅
😎👍☘🍻
A monumental achievement making what can be bought cheaply fit what you have. Ingenuity at the highest level.
Respect to you. Ten out of ten.
Everyone can learn from this type of thinking.
Congratulations with your new welding table. What a great investment for making fabrication jobs easier to do.
A well earned new table. Excellent repair on the wheels. Running large work reminded me of family members turning prop shafts for ships and my victorian great uncle who consulted on the original Forth Bridge; he was a naval architect/engineer. I am suprised you have not yet been asked to help with steam locomotive repair. They need people with your level of skill and thoughtfulness when handling old machinery. Thank you for posting.
That's a fantastic table, great to see you investing in yourself.
Oliver, as an ol' man now, I can only remember the joy of each new tool that I added to the shop! Each one brought new learning, and opportunities, and raised my skill level a bit more. Congratulations on you continuing success. Keep the faith, keep a steady hand, and always have hope. Life is a journey, enjoy every step! PS: Your stick welding is perfect, in that any cast iron repair that is successful is a home run!
Nice new fixture table, Snowy! You're going to need a bigger shop soon!
Nice table. Whole new level of fabrication.
Well done
That is so cool that your lathe can remove part of the bed.
An object lesson of the unnecessary damage caused by inadequate lubrication. Well done reconstruction in bringing it back to spec, Oliver's the man !!
Keeps us Fitters employed.
Nice table, it looks heavy. Nice to see you doing well. Your abilities are paying off love your Chanel and content
Another job well done. Love the new welding table.
Morning Oliver
Great and very interesting job as ever Sunday great video look forward to next week Love the new table to
Cheers ❤
Nice looking fab table! Young lad! Keep posting the good content! Thanks for sharing!
43:45 a beauty! Thank for effort and time spent to film and share with us youe work!
Mr Snowball!! Thank you, love your channel! 😀
love the new fabrication table , very nice
I do like the new table, thanks for the video it was an interesting one .🚜
Nice table Ollie, and another great vid , cheers 👍
That was a real challenge, repairing one wheel and adapting the new different shafts to fit. But in the case where the correct new parts are no longer available, it's a case of doing what you have to do to get the job done.
Pulling tractor went well lad , Im am well impressed . AGAIN !
Dang but you get some real winners dumped in your lap. This one looks like it will rival the Matbro in P.I.T.A. That was an outstanding job cleaning up that wheel.
And now you got the cutting and the layout table! Time for some serious fabrication. Congrats!
Excellent job on the wheel and the new table looks just the job well done great to see you are progressing well thanks.
Your Dad is a boss and a workaholic!
Measurements on the side of the welding table, but stil use the tape measure to set up the squares😅. Interesting video once again! Nice job!
They only go to 100mm then start again. Easier to use tape measure 🤣
Great new welding table, the clamping features will cut down setting up time greatly. Grease will adequately lubricate without oil, could have plugged the grub screw and drilled into the passageway from edge face to add grease nipple. Tractor pull was fantastic.
Nice welding table Oliver, there's no feeling like new tool day! Great repair on those journals too, they looked pretty nasty at first. You sorted it with the minimum of trouble just like you always do!
Whatever it cost the farmer for the "spares" and your time pales into insignificance in comparison with having a pile of scrap iron laying in a field somewhere and with the prospects of having to buy a new machine. Great job!!!
B hell Ollie, there’s some jobs you get . Top job mate as always . Your time and professional outcome to what to many , would seem impossible. Well done 👍
I used to find a windy chisel worked well for removing bearing races......good job as usual tho mate
That's a really great welding table. It looks too good to use! Hope you've got some good anti-spatter to coat it with to keep in in good condition.
It's going to make fabrication jobs a lot easier.
An awesome table Oliver 😊😊👍👍 your videos are very easy to watch,
Heh Ollie, that metal band Strapping has 1001 uses. That New Table Is something else!
I can’t believe they can’t be bothered to at least clean all the old old shit off it.
Sorry, I put this before you stated the same.
olly have no worries about your videos you could plate saw dust and i think we would all still watch um another great video
That fab table is a great addition to your operation! Hard work equals nice upgrades for sure. 👍🏻
That old gap-bed lathe of yours is really versatile. You can do things with it that you can;t do on a normal lathe. Great choice adding that to the workshop.
great show. thanks for your time again. see you next week.
Well done on the new table, costly but worth it
Stop running your work down Ollie mate , your welding is bloody good and what you get asked to fix sometimes is like the proverbial Silk purse and sows ear mate 👍 good on ya
Awesome stuff! So excited to see your new table earn it's keep. Loved that little tracked tractor too.
So many classic tractors on your farm! please give us a tour around🙏
17 I think
That fixture table is quite something, very handy, well done and thank you.
That welding table is a nice piece of kit ! I'm sure you will be using it on most of your jobs. That wheel repair was a tricky one to do. I'm sure the end result will function well and please the customer. Thanks for sharing your work week. Brian from South Yorkshire.
Interesting how the parent metal can affect the weld. Never realised that.
Wow that’s a nice table very nice 👍
I love it!
@@snowballengineering i’m watching that episode right now. I think it’s time for an overhead crane bud. every time you pick something up heavy by hand I cringe lol hang in there.
Hi Oliver. Nice new shinny fixture table. Soooooo good! Back to the welding. Cheers
Nice to see the new welders table Oliver , well done👍thanks for the Sunday fix mate 😊
As always... awesome work.
Purchase the table and use it straight away. One can say it was a smart purchase. Well done
When people bring dirty parts in the shop for repair, we tell them our hourly rate for the repair also includes cleaning the part first. Most of the time they clean it and then return the part. 😊
awesome work again! congrats with the fixture table
Nice table dude, great video, keep'um coming.
Your the man Olly great job
Love that badass table :) Congrats it's really nice
I’d say a proper farmer fix this week Oliver 😂. A touch rough around the edges but still a high quality repair 👍 the table looks a super addition to the workshop. I can see your rapidly expanding and a new couple of bays being added to the workshop in the future.
The tractor puller needs to be called the RED OXIDE EXPRESS 👊. Excellent work
I might’ve cut the hub out of both and swapped them! You could use an overhead crane too!
great video again nice to watch
Whenever I've had a circlip like that to get out. I've got them hot, so they lose their spring, then I can bend them out. But you are probably a lot better than me when it comes to gas cutting
Yes.
My boss showed me that idea when doing rear wheel bearings on Peugeots.
Those little circlips are a dog to get out otherwise
@pyromaniac354 it was a 306 I was doing when i got told about it
Oliver, we call those machines crawlers here.
Best luck with your works table 👌
Hi Oliver 😊, super new table, and all those fixtures will make life easier. Those idler repairs were quite a job, as always your skill and engineering ingenuity got the job done, thanks for another interesting video mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Awesome job there Oliver
Hey, Oliver. That fixture table is a beautiful piece of kit. Well done, mate.
You know, we really need to work on getting you a proper shop crane and the I-beam frame materials for Christmas. I saw over a dozen times in this video alone where you sure could have used it. And now that you have a bangin' fixture table for fabrication work, you have to be able to get your workpieces over to it😁.
Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the rebuild. See you next week, mate. Cheers.
1,397 👍's up SBE thank you for sharing 🤗
You were almost salivating with that welding/fabrication table. Well done. Good bit of kit that has already shown its worth. Next time the farmer will clean it after today you have charged him extra (lots extra) for having to work in manure covered work. If you don't charge extra they will just keep bringing unclean stuff to you. Or like Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering he just won't accept it. or will charge full machining price for the cleaning - and who can blame him. Keep up the good work. If the customer baulks at the non-perfect O ring seat, they can go elsewhere, at elsewhere's high prices and slower turn around times.
I'm guessing the customer would be buying a new tractor if Oliver hadn't repaired it. Amazing ingenuity in adapting and repairing those parts.
Very interesting project thoroughly enjoyed it
Thank you!
Awesome, thank you for sharing, always a pleasure star my sunday morning with you and your project, i learn a lot 👍👍👍👍great bench , congratulation 👍👍👍👍
Great job for a video. Very Nice welding table glad it has simulated tines lol.
Parting tools are a bit special. 🤠
Exactly the right choice to use a left and right hand turning tool.
Nice fab table 🔥💪!!
Congrats on the new table!! That thing is awesome. I bet you are pumped to get to use it finally... Great work man, you deserve it.
An amazing job Oliver considering what you had to work with. Your Fixture Table is a great piece kit too, you will find many uses for that.
Another excellent job. Can't wait to see the new fab table in action! Thanks for taking us along.
thanks for the interesting ag engineering content. after watching cutting edge engineering i keep expecting you to use a shop crane but i guess that could be another upgrade. does look like it makes life easier.
1:17:02 don't worry about time, what you share is beyond awesome....... THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Glad you think so 😁
Another piece of kit returned to service. If the lack of maintenance like we saw on this kit is common in your area, then you should have enough work to keep you gainfully employed for years to come. I've no idea if the imported idler would have held up in the small tracked tractor, but another option for future consideration would be to plasma cut out a thick wide ring for welding onto the imported idler to increase its diameter and width to match the failed idler wheels. Just an idea off the top of my head, no real idea if it would work :) Love your videos...
Did a similar repair to the idler wheels on a tracked wood chipper, wish I'd known about the nickle rods, I mig'd it up and it was nearly as hard as the sports sock I had under my bed at 14 years old !
Just picked up an old Jappa pto firewood saw like your Dad was using, wish it had the little conveyor with it like yours though.
Sunday and a more than 75min video, perfect start of the day
Congratulations, that's an upgrade to the shop - unpacking new gadgets always comes first 😉 even before customers
Those idler wheels were a challenge well dealt with in a typical Oliver style
I have always wondered why so many fitters I have worked with don't know about welding the inside of a bearing race to get them out. In the end, if they didn't fall out, I'd just weld them straight away. It really was the only way to get a bearing out of a blind hole, until I bought a full set of SKF bearing pulling and installation tools for the workshop.
I didn’t think it was necessary because they were knocking out easy enough plus it would have been difficult to get in to weld.
@snowballengineering Yes, I thought that was the case, as you had mentioned welding the insides. If you ever spot the SKF bearing disassembly tools, grab a set if you can. They are fantastic for pulling deep-seated internal bearings.
Could you do a part 2 with the the rest of this project in next weeks video please? I'm always amazed at what you can do with with welding...... what I can do with welding kinda looks like the inside of a pigeon cool after a couple of days without a clean up 😂
A small homemade crane or lifting device on the corner of your table would save you a lot strain and effort,
Regarding bearings, it is very rare that they are specifically intended for oil lubrication. The difference is the application they are in. Oil baths are usually for high-speed bearings, greased bearings usually work up to a couple of thousand revolutions. The bearing capacity for slow applications is usually better with grease.
Great job Oli! Think I would have started by pressure washing those parts though 😊
Big boys toys, it's like Christmas.😁
That’s a fancy new table
