Repairing damaged shear bolt hole on big baler flywheel.

  • In this video I have a big flywheel from a Massey Ferguson baler in for repair.
The hole where the shear bolt bush goes had gotten damaged due to the incorrect shear bolt being used. Because the hole is damaged there is nothing to support the bushing anymore resulting in the bush cracking.
Nice simple repair. I knocked the old bush out and placed the flywheel onto the new Huron milling machine.
To fasten the flywheel down I had to cut some new plates out on the cnc plasma table, I used the gas torch instead to ensure the slots didn’t have a taper.
Once the flywheel was secured, I used an edge finder that fit snuggly into the shear bolt hole to align the milling machine. I then switch over to a drill, drilled the hole out and finished with a reamer to get a nice accurate hole.
To sleave the hole to get back to original size I made one on the lathe. This had to be made with an interference fit on the OD and the ID and needed a shoulder in one end for the flange on the bush. Once made, I applied bearing set to the sleave and knocked it in with the copper hammer. To ensure the sleave wouldn’t be knocked out if the bush needs to be replaced, I drilled and tapped another little hole for a grub screw to hold the sleave in.
After removing the flywheel from the mill, I gave the hole a quick polish with the sanding wheel and then knocked in the new bush.
    Hope you enjoyed the video.
    Thanks for watching.

When I was studying machining one of the first things I learned, and by that I mean one of the first things that really stuck with me was a repair I had to make on a part I screwed up. I am so thankful to the machinist I studied under.
He took the time to explain all the different options to repair my work and save my term. Very similar repair and I always kept that technique in my bag of tricks. (I used an oversized fine threaded bush, loctite in place).
I’m retired now, and enjoy watching you grow your shop. I hope you are keeping good books so that you can continue to grow your business, which is a huge benefit to all your customers. Charge enough for all the small repairs so you can continue to invest in new machines, and take on all types of work that local folks need.

Sunday used to be just another day, until I found Ollie's channel, now it's the best day of the week. Am really glad you like your new mill, I can see why someone thinks it looks like something from out of space, if you watch an episode of space 1999 I think you'll see what they mean. Getting the computer bit fixed, will make it even more useful than it is now. 👍
