  • A short film by Jim Gritt showing the remains of the Aust Ferry which closed in 1966, the day before the Queen opened the first Severn suspension bridge on the 8th September of that year. The soundtrack, recorded by Anna and Jim, is a rendition of Bob Dylan's classic song, 'The Times They Are a-Changin'. Dylan was one of the last to use the ferry during his controversial 'Judas Tour'.

I travelled on this ferry in the 60s, as a child in the back seat of a car. At the time, the new bridge was being built and the ferry went underneath it to reach Beachley on the other side. Nice to see the ferry landing as it was.

Very sad that this doesn't exist even if just for summer tourism for passengers. Also sad is the selling off of the main services building (with views over the estuary). Was great being dropped off there by coach to do some sight seeing & shopping before resuming the journey into Wales. Now the best journey into South Wales is probably from Gloucester down the other side of the Severn.

It was a pretty scary crossing. My aunty Betty would pick me up from school in Sherborne in her Sunbeam Talbot and then if the ferry owners were making you sign a waiver to say you wouldn't sue if you were drowned (!) she'd turn round and drive up through Gloucester. The ferry would push up stream at an angle of 45 ö to shore then turn and coast down the other side.

I know the ferry is long gone and the times-they-have-a-changed but it does seem a shame that the abandoned remains are simply left to rot away.

I remember looking out of the car window travelling from my garandad's house in Llanhilleth to go home to Exeter. It was a sight I will never forget! Thick, grey sludge everywhere on the jetty at Aust. I thought "My God, the car's gonna slip back into the water. Scary for me as a 5 year old.

Just superb, and I only came across it as there is a photo of Dylan at the ferry crossing office in the video of The Hurricane track ( with lyrics )

Went in search friday 11 Oct 2013 with my mate Colin. Found the rusty old turnstile and gents wc. Walked on what was the slipway through the tall reeds and to the spot where the iconic photo of Bob Dylan was taken for the 1966 film and score ' no direction home'

What a beautiful little post. A lovely song that fits the images perfectly.
I've actually played a few gigs at the Old Ferry on the other side, in Beachley.
The ferry did not actually go from England to Wales: it went from England to England, as Beachley is not in Wales. But undoubtedly, most passengers would have headed on to Wales.

Great film thanks for posting. My Dad use to take me, my brother and sister on this crossing from Bristol over to see our Grandmother in Sully. I remember playing on the fruit machine in the cafe and sailing across. I reckon it would have been possibly back in 1963.
