A short film by Jim Gritt showing the remains of the Aust Ferry which closed in 1966, the day before the Queen opened the first Severn suspension bridge on the 8th September of that year. The soundtrack, recorded by Anna and Jim, is a rendition of Bob Dylan's classic song, 'The Times They Are a-Changin'. Dylan was one of the last to use the ferry during his controversial 'Judas Tour'.
Bridge Over Troubled Water

A film about my car journey across the river Severn suspension bridge last week when I was abducted by aliens and examined in their ship. The crossing should only have taken 8 minutes but it took nearly an hour, according to the clock in the car, and I was late for my appointment. Of course, it may just have been a dream. I'll never really know for certain.

Jim & Carol observe the mighty Humber and its world famous bridge from North Ferriby on a stormy March afternoon. The music, played by Jim and his band Rooting Around, is an improvisation on some traditional and original tunes which include Matty Groves, Oh Susannah and Eight of January. www.rootingaround.co.uk
some years ago, we [ex wife & 3yr old son] visited Lazerotti. We visited the main town , where they were building a new island admin building there was shuttering with viewing ports all round a gigantic hole. Ex Wife said "There's a cornish man at the bottom of any mine ...prove it" So I shouted 'Jack where de ye bide' there was a pause, then a voice replied "up by Gwenap wha bout youm boy" .. so i replied ' Chiverton Cross' ..........there was a pause then Jack replied "Thas a Shithole " I could only reply "Allus was" Ex said very little about the incident.
It was a pretty scary crossing. My aunty Betty would pick me up from school in Sherborne in her Sunbeam Talbot and then if the ferry owners were making you sign a waiver to say you wouldn't sue if you were drowned (!) she'd turn round and drive up through Gloucester. The ferry would push up stream at an angle of 45 ö to shore then turn and coast down the other side.
The road to it seems to be closed as I passed it the other day.
Very sad that this doesn't exist even if just for summer tourism for passengers. Also sad is the selling off of the main services building (with views over the estuary). Was great being dropped off there by coach to do some sight seeing & shopping before resuming the journey into Wales. Now the best journey into South Wales is probably from Gloucester down the other side of the Severn.
The best version of Cousin Jack on RUclips.
Excellent movie
thank you
Honestly I find this version interesting because I believe it is the only version in which a woman sings it.
great!
this is a great song, and this is a great performance of it, the message and tone of the song comes over really well
Incredible for chub there, main species by miles, can catch perch on a worm under the trees
I travelled on this ferry in the 60s, as a child in the back seat of a car. At the time, the new bridge was being built and the ferry went underneath it to reach Beachley on the other side. Nice to see the ferry landing as it was.
Lovely light returning to our quaint old harbour once more, let’s hope there will be more than just new light next spring,? Stay safe so you will see its return, in new light!
Tis' a lovely old job👍
Lovely thank you
Really nice version, love the timbre of your voice :)

This is a lovely version but the countrymen sing this song the best I have ever heard. True Cornish feel in their voices.
Lovely. I play this on accordion.
Just discovered this wonderful band. Thanks for teaching me the song :))
I'm in tears. But I'm smiling. And of course singing along. Thank you !
Brilliant, what a lovely melancholy little film.
Just superb, and I only came across it as there is a photo of Dylan at the ferry crossing office in the video of The Hurricane track ( with lyrics )
Beautiful
that's a great little film and a lovely rendition of 'The Times they are a Changing'.
Ah cracking. always wondered what it looked like back then. :-)
What a beautiful little post. A lovely song that fits the images perfectly. I've actually played a few gigs at the Old Ferry on the other side, in Beachley. The ferry did not actually go from England to Wales: it went from England to England, as Beachley is not in Wales. But undoubtedly, most passengers would have headed on to Wales.
Great film thanks for posting. My Dad use to take me, my brother and sister on this crossing from Bristol over to see our Grandmother in Sully. I remember playing on the fruit machine in the cafe and sailing across. I reckon it would have been possibly back in 1963.
I always loved this cover. I remember listening to it first year of University and really found it resonated with me. Now I'm 25!, I remembered being moved by this cover and just spent some time finding it. Well needless to say, I'm pleased I did. I hope this young lady is doing well. Peace.
Brilliant . Wow. Best cover I've heard .. Do you sing any other show of hands stuff?
Thanks for the insight..
Thank you for sharing.
Who is this girl? she is amazing.I want this song at our wedding but I want her version. Absolutely love it

Went in search friday 11 Oct 2013 with my mate Colin. Found the rusty old turnstile and gents wc. Walked on what was the slipway through the tall reeds and to the spot where the iconic photo of Bob Dylan was taken for the 1966 film and score ' no direction home'
