  • Today I headed to Talat Noi, on the edge of Bangkok's Chinatown to sample some ultra rare and unique Thai Street Food dishes.
I had Kha moo cha yen (cold pork leg jelly) at a 100 year old restaurant called Tue Kha Tang Stewed Pork Leg Jelly ขาหมูแช่เย็น ตือคาตั่ง 猪卩凍which I'm told is the only place that sells this unique dish.
I also had 'crazy noodles' at a place called Jae Ben Pad Ngi Ngaow
    เจ๊เบญผัดงี่เง่า by Chinatown Gate.
In between this I stopped for a coffee at Hong Sieng Kong.
    Directions and opening times:

    Crazy noodles: goo.gl/maps/G4...

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this RUclips channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Pork leg jelly is a traditional Teochew (a chinese dialect) dish. As majority of the Thai Chinese (about 70%) are Teochews, I am not surprised to see it available there in a Chinese restaurant. Btw, the Teochews also make a similar dish using shark - shark meat jelly. I have eaten this together with the Shark meat jelly when I was young. It was easily available then, but nowadays it's difficult to find them here in Singapore. Anywhere where there is a large community of Teochews, you will probably still able to find such dishes.

I discovered you via the Bangkok Podcast and have been enjoying your food tours. In November 2022, my husband and I visited my family in BKK and my cousin took us on a walking tour of the Chinatown art alley, all the old temples and that same coffee shop. Great seeing those spots in your video!

Well in Northern Thailand there is one similar dish called Kaeng Gradang. Pork legs are cooked together with garlic, pepper and coriander roots( for some recipe, chili and other spices are added) over low heat for long time until the stew is thicken. Then leave it over night. It s popular during cooler period Northern Thailand as it helps setting the gelatin. 😊 but now it can be left in the fridge. Not my fav dish though😊

I've probably eaten Teochew pork jelly once or twice in my life, here in Singapore. Gotta say, don't particularly enjoy savoury jelly, and the chilli dip doesn't help much.

@@suanchim4147 All throughout Thailand you will see places with the green bowl sign with the name of the dish that was awarded the title written in Thai on the sign. It was very popular many years ago. I have the book with all of the places that have the award throughout Thailand from the early ‘90’s. I have been to many right across Thailand. The owners are very proud that a foreigner understands this about their restaurant.

My fav area of Bangkok to stay (I normally stay at a little hotel right near Chinatown gate) and I didn't even know about that noodle place - thanks Gary for the steer!!
Gotta admit though, that pork jelly is a hard pass from me. It sounds like it's essentially a rich pork soup, left to go cold and congeal, so it would probably taste lovely if you warmed it back up. But as I'm a girl who peels the jelly off my Melton Mowbray pork pies before I eat them, I don't think I could manage the texture of meat jelly either!
Hope you had a good visit back in Blighty (we've been having some lovely weather for you) and safe journey back to Thailand.
