I have had 2 of these Epiphone Explorers now, for a few years. They are great guitars. Made of mahogany body and neck, using set-neck construction, a rosewood fingerboard and a pair of powerful EMG 81 and 85 pickups, these guitars are a Metallica fans dream! They are a throwback to the Gibsons James Hetfield would play in the 80s, with no pickguard. They are as sleek as a guitar comes, and pack the punch you wish for in a guitar that looks like this.
The sustain on these guitars is monstrous, and with some proper gain, they scream. When used on a clean channel, the bridge and neck pickup compliment each other (almost too well) and give you amazing, different tones in all 3 pickup selector positions. Watch this video and hear how the pickups sound with and without distortion, in all pickup selector positions.
COMING SOON: EMG 81x and 60 in a Epiphone explorer video, and EMG 81x vs 81, EMG 85 vs 60.

Man Epiphone really did a disservice by discontinuing these models last year. Glad I was able to snag one.
Hope they bring it back with same specs, even finding a used one is hard for me
@@thrashefe3523 I dont know what to tell you man. I just dont think they'll be bringing these back anytime soon. Even me finding mine was rough and I had to get it from Japan. Glad I wasn't scammed on Ebay
@@evenzeroescanbeheroes6875 please tell me how you got this
@@NoahParker98 after watching a RUclips video from Troglys Guitar show about Japanes brokers on ebay,i did a lot of scanning of listings and found one for a good price, which was a bit less than retail and bought it. It was expected to take a month to get here but I got it in two weeks.
@@evenzeroescanbeheroes6875 last question man , so how much did you pay? And is it considered a real model? Or one of the good fakes ? Either way I just want the model and a good version of it , anyway you could send me to a link or page ? If not all good. I’m clearly desperate for one 🤣
Awesome seeing you choose Of Wolf and Man as something to play, that song is underrated af
Thank you dude!! Check out my full cover collab I did with a bunch of musicians:

Straight up always been my fav from the black album. That chord rings out in the intro…. Fuckin chills every time
instant thumbs up when you played the welcome home harmonics correctly
Haha thank you 🙏🏻🤘🏼
Rez people seriously can’t play those right?
They sound better live
It’s scary how much the neck pickup sounds like James hetfeild when he jams fade to black on a year and a half in the life of Metallica in 91
great review, really nice tone and bloody fast fingers :D
Your channel is great! The latest purple RR you got is to die for!
Thank you man!! It is as much of a pleasure to play as it is to look at!!
That Toupee knows how to jam.
FINALLY got mine. Incredible! About to change the strap button location as well. 🤘🏻
Where’d you buy it
@@johnjohnson7509 found one online near me!
@@malcolmduguay408 wow, talk about some luck. Too bad they discontinued this guitar, could be an easy cash grab today
This model is awesome. I have the white version, but when I bought it it was already modified. The guitar didn’t have EMGs, she came with passive Seymour Duncan pick ups, which I didn’t mind, as I don’t have to keep changing the battery eheh. I loved having black also for a more Black Album feel. Very cool, I enjoyed the review.
Oh really, Duncans? How’s the tone compared to the EMGs in my video? I do like Duncans, too! And I agree, that’s why I bought the black one, for that Black Album feel! Rock on my friend!
@@GuitarGuts eheh yeah! Hmm idk exactly to explain the difference to be honest but I'm very happy with the tone. Maybe tomorrow I will post a little jam in my channel with the Explorer and I will leave the link here for you to hear the tone :)
I have a black Explorer EXP 83, it's the same model that James Hetfield played (The "Moore Beer" Explorer with the Jagermeister sticker & the "So What" Explorer with the Zorlac sticker) . It has no pickguard, and the 3 control knobs are placed in a "triangle" pattern. It's a kick ass guitar, and it's fairly light too, because those models were made out of Alder (body) & Maple (neck) . I think the fingerboard is rosewood, but it some sources state that it's Ebony.
It's kind of hilarious that Gibson missed the opportunity to make a signature Explorer for Hetfield, and instead came up with this model years later. This model is obviously inspired by Hetfield's ESP's which had the revised control layout, but on Hetfield's guitars, both knobs are volume knobs whereas on this (if I'm not mistaken) , there's one volume and one tone knob.
100%! Gibson really messed up (and still is) by not making a Gibson version and waiting so long for the Epi version. They need to make some natural ones and people would eat em up!!
Real interesting stuff, thanks for sharing!!
@@GuitarGuts Come to think of it, they did make a "reissue" a while back, but the control layout is a little different, and it's all mahogany (save for the fingerboard) which is unlike that of the originals, and also the strap button was moved to the heel of the neck instead of the top "horn" (big mistake).

Been wanting one of these bad boys for years now. I think itll be time to jump on one of them pretty soon.
Man, if you’ve wanted one a while, I’d say go for it! Theres a reason I have two, I had one, but then fell in love and needed another! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@GuitarGuts You know what? You're right. I've been saving up for one for a while and it might be time to pull the trigger on getting one.
@@GuitarGuts so glad to say that I'm the happy owner of a black Epiphone 1984 Explorer EX. Been that way since July and I'm glad I bought mine. Such a great guitar
Exactly the review I was searching for. Thanks!
I’m trying to find where to buy one
Good luck, getting harder and harder to find. Considered letting mine go but with how rarely they pop up, I may just pass on that
@@gavinkidd123 I went on ahead and bought a 76’ reissue
That's probably the best cleans I've ever heard on EMG's!
These Epiphone Explorers are sick, I want to get the black one. The only thing I don’t like about Epiphone explorers tho is that the body is more rounded at the corners. That’s another thing I noticed about these two, the white one is more rounded than the black one for some reason.
There’s a weird optical illusion with them, they are the exact same guitars, but they look slightly different and feel like the white one is a little heavier, but I’ve measured them and weighed them, they’re the same. Think about how they make these guitars, they make x-amount of bodies from a CNC machine, then they paint them, they don’t cut some, make them white, and then do another batch and make those black. So they are the exact same guitars. Either way, they are awesome and I definitely recommend getting one!
GuitarGuts Hellyeah, I’m definitely looking in to getting one, it’s a must have 🤘
Where did you get the white one? Nice Video!
Really thinking of getting one of these being locked indoors for the next few weeks! Only con I’ve seen in some reviews online is that some come with uneven frets up and down the neck. Did you experience any of that with either of your 2? I’m sure it varies guitar to guitar but I was just curious if you had to do anything out of the box to make them sound this killer?
Gary De Pena that is why I don’t want to buy online because I don’t want to get a defective one
Gary De Pena I got one of these about 8 or 9 years ago, and the fret work is terrible... For a guitar in this price range it really should be better, but other than that it's a beast.
I think they've been discontinued recently, at least here in Europe, but I don't know if the more recent ones had the same problem
Man those eng 81 has the real tone of and justice for all 😀
I love mine. And yea the strap button is goofy. need to try your fix.
Hey mate,
I got a black one. I do love it.
Just wondering,
What's the difference between the 85 and the 60 neck pick up in terms of tone?
Is there much in it?
I was disappointed when I figured out it was 85 not 60.
I wonder why they opted for that?
I don’t know why they would put an 85 on this model! But it sounds close to the 60. I’ll have a video up in the next couple weeks “EMG 60 vs 85” and I play them back to back with all the same setting etc so you can hear the true difference.
Meu sonho de consumo!!!😱😱😱😱😱
Hi Guitarguts! I have the same guitar and i'm also making few modifications. There is only one thing i doubt about, something my luthier told me on epiphone guitars. He demonstrated me that epiphone fretboards are not 'aligned', it means that the frets (wood space) are smaller and 'out of the right spot' (metal frets), this means that your epiphone is always going to be slightly out of tune.....what a shame!! why it is like that??
Nice guitars man!
Thanks Johnny!!!! Rock on my brotha!
Hey man saw your review awesome bro 🙏🏼🤘🏽🔥have a question where did you get your epiphone explorer from? the white one cause I tried looking at multiple different music shops and online and I couldn’t find one if you know any places or anywhere online you may think can find one I just want to know where you got it from?
Sadly,Epiphone discontinued this model this year. You're only hope now is to either find it used in a music store or online. And if you live in the US,good luck because online you'll probably find a few and some will be over priced. Last option is to import one,but I wouldn't recommend it. Good luck hunting
Man, I want one of these, too. I'm torn between this and a Schecter Research V-1 Custom. Really looking for something different in terms of body shape. Too many of my guitars are double cutaways.
Have you a shop where i cn buy the white one with EMG 81 and 85 pickups?? Thank you
I looked for white EXP here in Europe last spring but unfortunately they stopped making them, nowhere to get them:( So instead I grabbed Epiphone 1958 Korina with EMGs from a local guy. Soundwise, clean tone is very similiar to yours.
I Wish i could Find a Reissued 84 because I have always wanted an Explorer but its the Selector Switch that was a deal Breaker for me and Im a MetallicA and Hetfield fan and I get why on his EX220 he modeled them to the 84 EXplorers the switch is at the perfect location on those also they look betther without a pick guard
They're out of stock everywhere where I live, Amazon, long and McQuade, literally everywhere
hetfield too dont like the location of the strap button thats why on his snakebyte strap button is on the back.
The only thing that i hate in my explorer is that the fretboard isn't ebony its more like wood
What’s the name of the song that the riff at 7:17 is in I’ve been looking for it but I can’t find it and it sounds familiar but this video is my only reference to go off of at the moment
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the name of
i have one and the nut seems about 1mm too close to the 12th fret for example knocking the intonation off completely, it's terrible. the headstock on mine also has a weird shape, not like a proper explorer at all, one in the video looks a lot better in that regard though
I would chose the white one any day
It sounds really good , which EMG's are good???? the tone sounds awesome.
Bridge is emg 81, and neck is emg 85 I do believe, it's what James and kirk used
81,85 they’re kickass the 60 is also fuckin killer🤘🏻🤘🏻
is the gibson like a ltd from the wood and quali??
Do y’all know where I can get one now in the uk?
I think they are not made anymore, right? Such a shame, hopefully they start making them again.
yeah idk why but i think its a shame, I´d love to buy one of these brand new
my 93 explorer has the strap button there. actually “leans” away from me
I wanted to get one and sell my Gibson butit seems they shot up in price. they used to be $500-$600.
Now I see them for like $800-$1,000.
At this point I’m just gonna say “fuck it” and try to build my own explorer. especially with a lighter wood cause mahogany is heavy as shit. I want to go for Balsa wood. But I want the neck slot to fit an Ibanez RG neck. Or MAYBE an iceman neck.
EMG’s and whammy bar.
This is my vision of what my signature would be, if I was endorsed by Ibanez and shit.
Got a black one for 370$ in my home town. Snagged it as fast as i could
gibson should make one like this
I really love explorer shape guitars, I want one. How heavy are the guitars?? I have a Peavey rotor exp and it is god damm heavy. What string gauge are you using? Do you prefer the 24.75 scale or 25.5 scale guitars?
He mentions in the video that the guitar is about 7.4 lbs
@@Dreager141 I went for the schecter e1, it just looked better and felt better too, I think shortly after I purchased the e1, I found out that Jackson has the demeltion pro white, which has 24frets, it's on my list of guitars to buy.
I have a problem with my explorer: way too much distance between the strings and the neck, ive tried to lower the bridge but then i get fretbuzz at the first 3 frets. How do i fix this?
If you lowered the bridge, adjust the truss rod just enough until the first few frets are just far enough away so you don't get fret buzz. If that doesn't fix the issue, than I recommend either looking up a youtube video of how to lower string action, or take it in to a luthier at a guitar shop and they'll take care of it easily for you; maybe even for free. Good luck on your guitar 😃
Because it sounds like your neck may be bowed backwards slightly, but should be a simple easy fix
Where can I buy one? in UK?
I'm a white guitar guy but black is cool too ive had some in both colors
Yeah, both colors work so well with this guitar style!
How does this compare to the Les Paul when playing Metallica?
It’s quite similar to a good Les Paul, like an Epi Custom (which I also have), except for the Explorers make you look way cooler 😎😂🤘🏼
I've been looking for these guitars for a few months now but it seems like they have discontinued the production.
But I want one soooooooooooo fucking bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check reverb. They pop up time to time
One on there now, white one
These just disappeared from all over retailers!! Did they stop making them?!
Epiphone completely made a new lineup in 2020, so yes
Nice guitar
Thank you! Rock on 😁🤘🏼
Did this guitar get discontinued? It shows that it is not available on guitar center, or sweetwater's website
Yes, they are discontinued. Check EBay/Reverb, there are always some on there.
@@GuitarGuts if i may ask, for roughly how long?
Adrian G like 3-4 months
I imagine they’ll bring them back sometime soon. These are really popular and would be an easy cash grab for epiphone.
@@adrianaguirre6795 still waiting ;(
I am willing to be a lead guitarist. So whichever is more suitable for a lead player ? Probably get one of'em soon.
I'm so sad they discontinued 'em :((
I know I want to buy one so bad
@@johnjohnson7509 fr they cost like 2grand used now
Are they Korean made??
Epiphone copying ESP's MX electronics configuration on these models is so funny. Esp just makes everything better, aren't they? :)
Nice guitars thou.
Looks like lead playing to me lol
Haha thanks!!
Can I play rock on this to?
If you really want to you can, but these pickups are more for metal, I’d recommend some passive pickups for rock.
A mão do cara tampa a ponte inteira assim fica fácil kkk
I am trying to buy one of these but I can’t seem to find the black one in stock, any idea as to where I can purchase one ?
I'm having the same problem. can't find them on any of the big music store websites, just the occasional second hand seller. let me know if you find them anywhere
There’s one on reverb right now, and a bunch on eBay, just search Epiphone Explorer 1984 👍🏼
They dont really make them anymore I’m pretty sure, so you will have to buy used. Check Reverb and EBay, there are some on there right now, I just looked at eBay.
GuitarGuts that’s a shame man I’d love to be able to buy one but I’m not paying 800 plus 330 shipping to Germany for a used Epiphone.
White for me
My explorer is like ~9lbs lol
mmmmm black or white mmmm
is it a wig??
LMAO nope
Is that a wig???
