  • Up today we continue the Polaris P4M Explorer series. We are pitting the Polaris P4M James Hetfield Explorer against the Epiphone '84 Explorer. I show you the differences in the bodies, the weight, neck dive, and a tone test. Both guitars have the same pickups, strings, and tuners. Both have the stock bridges that came from the factory.
    Let me know what you thought in the comments below! Which one did you like best, or do both suck? Let me know. Any suggestions for more explorer guitar related content, let me know! I reply to every comment!

    Second hand prices on the epiphones are crazy and as you say you still need to get frets levelled and crowned.

    Definitely a huge difference between the two when it comes the Cleans & Distorted sounds. Epiphone for the Cleans are both Louder, Smoother, as for the Distorted parts, the roles are reversed lol the PM4 is definitely more Classic to that '"Hetfield" Body/Tone of the older original albums. You (I) can really hear when you do palm muted notes. Definitely made me a believer in the PM4, I'm a massive Hetfield fan haha one of the reasons I started playing many years ago.

    I watched this video with a mate of mine ages ago.
    I have a black epiphone 84 and my mate regretted not getting one also.
    After watching your video he decided to order a P4M same as in your video thinking it would be good enough for the money.
    He put in emgs 81 85s, same as in the eppiphone.
    He is reasonably happy with it.
    But i got to be honest, we have been tweaking with the set up since he has owned it.
    We can not get it to play as nice as my epiphone.
    Its chalk and cheese.

    Im interested in your experience with your examples.

    • @DeweyJHall1
      @DeweyJHall1  7 месяцев назад +1

      On my P4M I had to glue all the frets in, and level, and recrown them. I also changed the nut to bone, Without that, I couldn't have gotten low action on mine as it was. Mine stays in tune great. It's hung on the wall for months, picked it up the other day, and strummed around, it was in tune. I wish the neck was thinner tho, like the Epi 84. I've thought about reshaping the neck on the P4M, but I'm not sure I want to put that much work into it right now. Got so much to do, and so little time lol. I've found your best bet is to go with a major brand, explorer guitar. You'll get better consistency and different neck profiles. All these china copies have the same, thick chunky neck. I will do another video on the P4M soon tho. Probably re shaping the neck in it

    As far as the sound of each, that's as simple as swapping out your pickups. Done and done. All the tone and sound is in the pickups. The material only matters for sustain and playability/comfort. So this is cool, I love cheap guitars that have a solid build but need a little tweaking with hardware, save a ton of money that way. It was the fact that it came with active EMG pickups, now watching this video I think I’m more of a fan of the Badcat Explorer, in fact I just ordered one and that’s coming Tuesday, March 21, which is next Tuesday, I do plan to do whatever upgrades and whatever maintenance work, Dad is going to require to get it to play good, in fact, I have plans of putting James Hetfield’s EMG HET-Set active pickups and his new Ernie ball signature strings on this new guitar that I’m about to get, I think this is probably the most authentic James Hetfield Guitar around for the money it’s perfect, because not a lot of people can afford a $2,000+ guitar, plus I’m a huge fan of the bigger body, thicker neck, and bigger headstock, I heard that Gibson is considering bringing out a signature 1984 Gibson James Hetfield signature Explorer, it would be nice to see the Explorer come back to the Gibson lineup, in my opinion that’s my favorite guitar. Very good job. Nicely done. To my ears, the '84 sounds a bit deeper or more bassy. The P4M sounds more tonal and slightly more thin. That is, if you didn't move the microphone and just plugged the same cable into each guitar. So.. I'd say both have a different 'kind' of wood, even if it's the same type, meaning, I'm hearing a wood tonality difference. Again though, if the microphone and all other settings were exactly the same.

    • @DeweyJHall1
      @DeweyJHall1  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and for the nice comment! Yes, all settings and microphone placement were the same in the video. There's definitely a difference. These would be good to multi track on a recording, since they're different, it would be a wider sound. Hmmm, that maybe a good idea for a future video, lol!

      Sooner or later, the cork sniffery arrives 😂. Its khaya vs shit epiphone wood. After e0 years of guitar playing thats one of the most guarded secrets on guitar manufacturing and gibson knockoffs. I bought a Vietnamese custom explorer for 300+ shipping. It sounds as good or as a gibson tribute (acoustically). Thats why I Sold all my Brand guitars and startet doing "Premium kits" if you can do fret jobs and nut filing you could spare sooo much money

    • @ShadovvV
      @ShadovvV 9 месяцев назад

      @@nicopoppe4838 - Are you saying the 84 is Khaya wood? Because the original specifications say nothing about it. I believe the body wood is strictly mahogany, not Khaya (African) mahogany, so it would depend on where the wood was sourced from and mahogany grows in like 5 or 6 different countries. Incidentally, I never said the Hetfeild model sounded better, just has more of a bassy tone, which personally I do not care for. I own several mahogany guitars and almost all of them are too dark, sometimes muddy.

    • @nicopoppe4838
      @nicopoppe4838 9 месяцев назад

      @ShadovvV the epiphone is obviously just meranti (asian mahogany just a Marketing name)
      It is maybe probable that the p4m is african mahogany (melicae family and what everyone is using in USA).
      Big asian factories only use local woods but china import Lots of african mahogany. Obviously epiphone it's not gonna use it, otherwise nobody woud buy a gibson again. Same history with everything that cor tek make. Just meranti and nyatoh.
      I don't know your guitars but every epiphone, prs se, ltd, schecter, dean etc made in asia it's not made of mahogany or african mahogany.
      There are some exeptions maybe if we where living in 2010, but nowadays you cant trust even the name "mahogany". So thats why I sold all my guitars and now just do premium asian kits from China or Vietnam, mod the shit out of them, spend like 700 bucks but the result it's same or better than a cheap Gibson woodwise.

    • @ShadovvV
      @ShadovvV 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@nicopoppe4838- I believe you're correct. Probably the same reason why the FBI raided the Gibson factory. If I'm not mistaken, it had something to do with the import of the wood. People were saying it had to do with taxes, which I think is complete utter bull. The wood was apparently illegal in the US. lol As ridiculous as that sounds..

    In theory these should sound about 99% same, since they have the same pickups and strings. But... In the cleans the P4M sounded warmer and more authentic, the Epi sounded sharper and shriller. Distorted the P4M seemed to have more body to the tone, the Epi sounded like it was played thru a 10W practise amp 😀🙉
    I have no explanation to these differences other than:
    a) the mysterious "external mic" somehow messes things up/causes variance
    b) the internal electronics in the geetaarss
