Argument well made, thank you. I actually didn't mind long games myself. When I went to a live game, it just meant that much more time I was sitting there taking in my enjoyment of the ball game experience. But I recognize not everyone feels the same, and the point about declining attendance makes the case. The faster games won't deter a fan like me (I'll enjoy the games either way), but it might bring back some fans who want the quicker action, which is good for the game overall.

If I wanted to stay home, I'll watch it at home. I like a 5 hour, 14 inning marathon. If people want or need to get home early for the morning, then they shouldn't be going out the previous night. I chat with strangers during the down time, it's fun and relaxing. Cut the game time, cut the prices Get rid of the runner on 2nd in extra innings too. Blindfold the batters so there's quick strikeouts, that will really speed things up.

I don't give a damn about new rules. But I will break it to all of y'all. It's not the length of the game that people have a problem with. People aren't going to games because there's too many games in a season. Baseball season is the longest season in US sports. 162 games and you expect to have a ton of attendance and viewership on television? You can skip 40 games of a season and nobody would bad an eyelash.
The league needs to cut the games in half. Instead of 162 games do about 80 to 82 games a year. That way every single game means more than it normally would. Baseball players will give more of a shit, fans would give more of a shit because there's less games going on. Will want to go to more games because there's not that many games to go to.
Hell, the NFL average for a game is just over 3 hours like the MLB. It's the same for NCAA football... So you can't tell me the length of the game is the problem. Because it's not. Going to an MLB games and experience. You walk around the ballpark, go and see different things inside of it, go do activities and events that are going on.
Sportcasters, sports talk show hosts, and people who work for organizations or the MLB have no clue what they're talking about. Because they don't watch or go to the games as fans of the sport. They do it cuz it's their job. And everybody fucking hates their job.
Go outside and touch him fucking grass and get a perspective on reality

    • @GlenHibbert
      @GlenHibbert Год назад

Yes but NFL and NCAA football is constant action so it doesn’t feel like it. Also, you have 22 guys that are always in constant motion and are a part of every play. In baseball a majority of the time it’s just the pitcher, the catcher and the batter. Everyone else is just standing around unless there’s a base hit so the game seems much longer.

No. Just no. Baseball and starting pitchers have taken a (I refuse to say the name because I'm a Dodger fan) leap BACK.
Football = 3 hours, basketball = 3 hours... That's just a fact. Baseball with NO CLOCK 3 hours!! now you want to shorten the game, shorten what we now call a starting pitcher... To put a clock on baseball is a travesty of travesties.
And before I get the "new times old man" BS, I welcome the complete pimping of home runs and epic bat flips... Do you know how hard it is to hit a bike run in the MLB??? Pimp the crap out of it.

I will disagree with everything you said regarding the pitch clock being needed by baseball.
    1. No new fans will be added because a game goes from 3Hrs to 2.5Hrs. People who are not baseball fans will remain NOT baseball fans. The scratches, sniffs, mound visits all add to the soap opera that plays out over a 3 hour game for a baseball fan.
    2. The financial side of this equation doesn't balance either. Fewer fans buying stuff at the stadium + few commercials during games == less revenue for an already VERY expensive roster.
    3. Game 7 of the WS won't be determined by a pitch clock...."Players will adjust". What a BS statement. If players will adjust, let's just have a 90 minute clock like soccer and extend for penalties so we can cater to the non-baseball fans. We'll only play 7 inning. But hey, that's OK right. While we're at it, let's just make it 3 balls and 2 strikes so those non-fans will tune in.

      1) I see it as a long term impact. I am 55 and watched the game growing up with my dad as I am sure a lot of did. Today's kids have a LOT more options than I did growing up and they do not want to sit and watch a game when nothing is happening. My hope is that when a dad is watching a game a kid may sit down and as things happen quicker it may keep the kids interest more. I am not saying kids today have short attention spans either, just that they do not need long attention spans. As kids start to spend time watching the game then perhaps more kids will like the game because, despite when many people say, the game itself is not changing.
If you want to mark the post, make it 10 years from now.
      2) I would think that the game ending faster would mean more fans would be able to stay later and buy more merchandise. Concessions may loose a little but not much as the amount of time between innings is the same and they have the game feeds in the booths. Maybe this may be good in that teams may have more people selling food and drinks out in the seats and therefore get more people jobs.
      3) Your suggestion of a 90 minute clock shows you really do not understand what is being done and why. The goal is not to simply shorten the game time. The goal is to shorten at bats and have action occur more often which for the most part would shorten the game. MLB would be happy with a 3 hour game 8-6 game where players were on base than a 3 hour 3-1 game where the runs were score on a3 run homer and a solo shot. I wish I knew where I heard this stat from but there was at one point and average of just under 5 minutes between balls being put in play. So players would strike out or walk so often that nothing would happen to engage the crowd.
      4) Your though on 2022's attendance is pure speculation. I agree that is was stable from 2012 through 2017 but started taking bigger dips in 2018 and while the 64 million in 2022 is a bigger dip it is still *almost* in tune with the rest of the trend

@@claytoncourtney1309 1) OK, look back in 10 years. 2) I've never seen folks stay later unless there were fireworks or kids running the bases. The game ends, folks go home. 3) Don't get snippy. I understand exactly what the intention is.... cater to folks with short attention spans. Maybe kids(and adults) with a phone stuck in their face for 12+ hours a day is a contributing factor? Leave the game alone. 4) As stated, ticket reporting changed in 2018. You don't just lose 3 million fans from 1 season to the next.(2017-2018) Absolutely nothing else of significance happened in 2018 to explain this. On the contrary, MUCH has happened in 2022 and with another 5 million fan attendance decrease. You may call my conclusions speculation, BUT those are the FACTS I used to arrive at said speculation. You just don't lose 13% of attendance for no reason since 2017. The game was just as slow then too. Appreciate the comments though.

MLB has great fan turnout and tv viewership in the LATE season but this is going to bring people back to watch the early season because now a game will run the same length as going to the movies.
It will also allow teams to charge less for tickets since they have a quicker product. Ticket prices have soared in the last decade and that’s another reason most teams can’t even field the bottom section of their stadium until 3/4 the way through the season.
