Live from Daryl's House is amazing and so much fun to watch. I highly recommend all the episodes. Daryl ain't just a singer, he's talented multi-instrumentalist! All the 'shows' are great with top talent in the various 'house bands'. The list of artists who drop by to play is astounding. My favorite is the Joe Walsh episode.

You reminded me of a time when genuine talent mattered; I'm not fully sure if it does now. The recorded/released versions of "I Can't Go for That," "Out of Touch," "Private Eyes," and "Adult Education" are all great examples. What's always fascinated me about him is his ability to jump between notes that are far apart from each other and (to my ear) nail them both. His voice has always sounded so precise to me.

Any plans of doing Simple Minds sometime? They have a killer performance from (I think) 2013 at SSE Hydro Glasgow of "Don't You (Forget About Me)", but they also have other great ones from that performance (like "On The Waterfront"). They still sound great, even after all these years. Anyway, they are a band that is often overlooked here in the states, but were massive everywhere else in the 80's.

Apropos of your discussion of Daryl and John as talented song writers. Paul McCartney said that when he, John Lennon and George Harrison (Ringo?) got together to write songs they never had writers block. They never had a lack of ideas. That's talent!

For some reason these guys don't get the respect they deserve- it may be because they have attracted mass popular appeal. I can remember as a student, they were really "underground" and the manager of the record shop I frequented ordered me to by one of his import copies of "Abandoned Luncheonette". He said copies were as "rare as hen's teeth" and word had got out he had copies and folk from Leeds were coming over and buying them. Anyway over 45 years on, it's still a great record and so are Darryl and John.

Speaking of taking a song and making it into something else... Hall and Oates wrote a song called 'I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)'. Later on, they met Michael Jackson for We Are the World, I think it was. In any case, MJ told Daryl that he hoped they didn't mind but he loved dancing to that song so much he stole the 'groove' for Billie Jean - one of his biggest, most iconic songs - from their song. Daryl said he didn't mind as he had stolen it first. He didn't say where or from what song he stole it, but that situation exemplifies what you were talking about here.
Along the same lines, Prince stole Phil Collins' beat or groove whatever you want to call it for 1999 from Sussudio. Sussudio was fairly big for Phil and of course, 1999 was a hit for Prince. I'm not sure how much these things are noticed (by most people), but it does happen all the time. I usually notice it, though hah!
John Fogerty sued by his former label for stealing from CCR's Run Through the Jungle for his solo song Old Man Down the Road takes the cake for absurdity though. It was ridiculous because John wrote both songs, so how could he steal from himself. The judge in the case had him play both songs, and then dismissed it.
I think two of the most famous examples were George Harrison being sued for stealing from the Chiffons' He's So Fine for his solo song that became a big hit: My Sweet Lord. I believe he lost the case and had to pay some amount of money for it, although it was determined his theft was subconscious. The other is much more recent with Marvin Gaye's estate suing Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for stealing the bass line and then some from Got To Give It Up for Blurred Lines. There were so many similarities they had to pay half the royalties for the song to Marvin's estate. I kind of agree with that one because I never saw much of value... sorry, unique, in Blurred Lines other than Marvin's portion which essentially made up the entire song, outside lyrics that were not particularly... creative.
I think there's a line somewhere between influence and outright plagiarism, but it can be hard to say where the line is or should be drawn.
As for Hall and Oates, what unique talents! Probably wouldn't choose this particular song/performance (maybe She's Gone to hear some of Daryl's soul and the song is just a really great example of how well they write and sing, etc.) but always on point, nevertheless. Really love watching Live From Daryl's House. He's multi-talented, and has a fantastic voice on top of it! Love your analysis, Fil with an F (watched your X Factor bit :p) needless to say, but always nice to hear I expect.

I have waited and waited for you to react Hall & Oates..but the older Hall & Oates is so much better. Their list of accomplished great songs is long and distinguished. This early stuff is just not their best. Please do some deeper dives from Live From Daryls House.

"Maneater" was originally conceived by John Oates as a reggae style tune. He took the song to Daryl and they work on it some more....the rest is history. If you search for a more recent john Oates solo version of "Maneater", you'll hear that the song has gone back, more or less, to its original style. Also on display with the more recent John Oates solo version is just how good of a guitarist he is.

It seems to just come so natural to them. I love Live at Daryl’s house. He had so many great artists including Smokey, Todd Rundgren, and so many more. Loved you analysis, Fil! You ate the best !!

Hall and Oates had six US # 1 hits to date.More than any other duo in the history of the US charts(male, female, mixed,American or of any other nationality). They also participated in USA for Africa's We Are the World which topped the US chart in 1985 so technically they achieved seven US chart toppers.
