I really like this build. This kid respects the heritage of this Bianchi, yet he is able to blend it very nicely with modern parts. So many of us suffered on these bikes. They have a character of their own, this build captures that character. Great job!
Rad build dude! Better than the day it was bought. You are in a special club, as am I. Sanding a bike frame to a polish is a job many have started, but few have finished. Ive never polished a steel frame, but did sand it quite fine, 800 grit. I then hung it close to the ground from a tree in my front yard overnight to get dew on it. In the morning, as planned, a bit of corrosion had started. I warmed and dried it in the sun, then after a quick wipe with tack cloth, hit it with several coats of clear. It is a striking looking bike now, built up with vintage parts. Over 10 yrs later, the finish is slowly maturing. I did sandblast, then hand sand/polish an aluminum frame for a hybrid to singlespeed conversion build. I feel your pain. Yes, weeks of evenings watching TV, sanding. I regretted sandblasting as I had to sand down to the bottom of the profile left by the blast media. I used metal polish and found it darkened it a bit. Mothers aluminum polish left a brighter finish than autosol. Youve inspired me to try this on a FUJI Im playing with at present. Its all original, paint is a 6 outa 10. But its purple. I also wanna cut/file the pump peg, the (extra?) chain hanger, yes, two of em. Also get rid of the fender mounts. I often drill a big hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket shell, for weight. Ive modified the sausage tube that holds rear brake caliper so now my rear brake faces forward, mounted to front side. I think it looks cool, works just as well, and I could shorten cable a few cm. If I was doing your Bianchi, Id drill the handlebars to internally route the cable. Done this on modern and old school bars. Works great, no electrical tape.
I couldn't just give this one a "Like", so here's a "❤" too. I'm doing the same with a vintage Tommasini Super Prestige. Nicely executed Jacob. It came out gorgeous.
Great video. We all have those bikes we lusted after at some point and they seem at the time like dreams. For me, it was the mid-80s Zullo, Pinarello, Tommasini, and Picchio. I have all but the Tommasini now. Originally, I went with contemporary vintage components but all now have modern components so I can get the most use out of them. They are no longer dream bikes for me but a reality. And they all get ridden properly. They are not wall hangers.
I absolutely love these kinds of bikes! My own road bike is a very similar kind of frame made locally in 1988 (like 30km from where I live) from Columbus SLX tubing which was looking really sorry for itself. I sanded it, resprayed and built up with all modern parts. It's the best road bike I've ever had and I'm absolutely in love with these. I really wanna get more people to know how amazing an old high quality steel frame is with a fresh setup.
I found a '80s Bianchi Ocelot and over the course of 2 years found all the parts to make is a 1X gravel bike. The frame geometry is so comfortable! Short of Rivendell or Temple I don't think any bike manufacturers even make Frames like this. We both took a 30+ yr old bike and gave it new life and another 30 years. You can't do that with a carbon bike.
I did something similar with an early ‘80s Trek road racing frame. I had it sandblasted and powder coated. The finish came out beautiful and then I built it up with an Ultegra set up. It rides like a dream!
Nice job and a lovely video, thanks for sharing. Shame you’re not keeping it! I did something similar with a Bianchi titanium frame that was a replica of the 2004 Roubaix winning bike. Some later era Bianchis than yours have structural foam injection in the seat tube which can be damaged by paint stripper so that’s one pitfall to watch out for. The bikes with it came with a frame sticker near the bottom bracket advertising it. I used Scotch-Brite pads to take off the paint and give a brushed Ti finish. That took weeks as well! I put 10 speed Campagnolo Record triple from the era of the last of the range topping alloy chain sets. Royce / Sapim / Ambrosio hand built wheels with Panaracer gravel tyres were added and Brooks Swallow Ti saddle. I’ve ridden it like this for a couple of years as a gravel bike and did rather well on certain Strava segments that were only really tackled on MTBs.
Love it. reminds me when I rebuilt an "old" Raleigh bike I used for years and completely rebuilt it with updated components. used it for long distance races up to 150 miles
Blisters from sanding LOL. Next time have it glass bead blasted you'll thank the gods for it, way better and cleaner than any hand sanding, that's what I did for my Bianchi Limited.
cool to see. I have a late 90's Bianchi Eros that I ride daily. I love it. I dont really see a need to upgrade it at all. I did a full refresh on it 9 years ago and it's due for a good cleaning and some new cables and tape. thanks for the inspiration!
@@GuntherSnaps damn on my bike the cables need to be replaced after around a month riding in wet conditions, and that doesn't account for my rear brake cable refusing to comply after the first wet ride. But yeah it generally takes a month for the rest of the cables to stop moving. I used to clean ans relube my cables but considering the time and effort to do that and the cost of new cables, I just change everything now.
@@dan_lazaro oh well I have never riden in wet weather. Bike only sees lovely dry weather. But my mountain bike sees wet weather and I’ve never had a problem with cables. Maybe you should switch to hydraulic if your having that much problems with cables
What a lovely thing to do. Spent many days during lockdown sanding down an old Ridley frame...alloy,with Time Carbon stays and forks. Sprayed lacquer on carbon and polished the aluminum. Built up SramForce 10 speed to use as adventure bike for my son and me to use..

Amazing build! 🎉 I wonder what torque do use used for the seat post clamp? Not having any manual for old frames makes me wonder what’s the best practice . Thanks
Quick question. How did you get the wheels to fit so well on that frame. I thought there would be more of a gap going from 27 1/4 inch vintage wheels to the slightly smaller 700c size. Thanks let me know
Just got myself a bianchi because of this video. Been watching like 5 times a year for nearly 3 years. But now I've decided that its time. Just bought a Bianchi 58cm bike. I know the Fork is a Condor chrome straight fork but the handlebar! What brand is it? @kieraMcVitty and @jacobhennessy4934. I'd also like to buy the decals or the illustratior files if possible :)
great bike 👍👍, what is the total weight of the bike ?? Do you use carbon brake pads for your carbon roval rims because these require specific brake pads for carbon. What columbus tubing is it? El or SLX? Please specify
Great build. You inspired me to do my own modernized steel frame covid project, though not as high spec. Bridgestone with a new 105, was a blast and enjoy riding it. Please consider another.
Damn that looks awesome! I have my dream BMX in my workshop but I’m now getting into a little bit of road riding to lose some weight, and have bought an old school fixie, don’t even know what brand it is, but’s a start. I have an image in my head of my dream bike, and I’m bidding on the frame now, and just looking for bits now and then. Can’t wait to put some miles on them
Amazing. I just got a 00s Bianchi and I thinking of doing the same. The maximum tire size that i manage to use is 700x25C. What is the tire size that you used on this build?
i got Bianchi Celeste same frame ,with all campy super record ,my wheels are Frances but those rings you put in your bike looks amazing on it i will try my 60 carbon rings in my old Bianchi! nice bike you have my friend
Made a similar project with a GIOS Torino compact 40th anniversary with a Record groupset, Deda parts, Campa wheels and Vittoria tires. It’s a lightweight dream. I like yours too, great job! But I would have saved the painting. I prefer a good old true patina before a stripped, clear coated steelframe.
nice restoration...i had a friend who had a bianchi and he would let it be known that his bike was a bianchi (mine was a nishiki made in japan) i always wanted to put my hands on a bianchi ...maybe someday...
Oh yeah I can relate I stripped paint off an old Cinelli Supercorsa with chem stripper and it Took Forever those old Italian Bikes have like 6 layers of paint on them and yes it was chromed but the areas that weren't polished were dull so I PAINTED It BLACK haha. Steel is Still Real!!
I tried a lacquer finish over raw steel, didn't hold up, had better luck with clear enamel that i cooked on with a heat gun. That bianchi is beautiful 👍
Hey nice build, I'm building a bike like that and I'm curious to know what was your bike's trim width? Because mine is 13 cm and I don't know if the cassette is going to fit or not
Did you have any issues or have to bend/modify frame to accommodate modern wheel/hub width? How about brake caliper reach? Thanks for insight - I'm excited to try this type of project on my 80s Bianchi if I can find work-around for these.
Super cool! I’m in the middle of a very similar project - 90’s Veloce frame. I’m going to be doing a modern take on Celeste-blue, and will be using retro NIB Campy drivetrain. But I love your vision and design. GREAT JOB!
Honestly I was as shocked as you that it did just fit. No stretching required, once I put a wheel in and it fitted I knew this was something I wanted to build

Noooo not white bar tape for a winter bike noooooo
what size tires / wheel u used...i dont think those are original ones
This bike is far too nice to ride in the rain!! Not sure on the tyre width (I think 25mm), but they're not original, just some new tyres
how did you strip and repaint the frame?
Great restoration! but why did you use blue tape for that handlebar tape
every day I walk 6 kilometers to get to work, and now I have a bicycle even though it is still cheap it is still a big help 🥰
In which country do you live in?
