You are going to love it. My DD is a 2005 Sierra Denali that has the 149 T case. The gmt800 trucks never got the BW tcase like the SUV did. It has a heads and cam 6.0 with a built by me 4L65 and a 3800 stall converter. If you dump the gov loc diff before it breaks and swap in a nice LSD it makes for an extremely controllable winter hotrod. I dont recommend a torsen style rear diff in the snow as the just act like an open diff most of the time. I went with a auburn pro series rear diff and love it. And for context I live in Alaska
I had a 2010 Denali XL with this set up. It worked well in all dry conditions. I ran into an issue in the snow though. Tires although new were highway type all seasons. I was in 3-4 inches of powdery snow on an uphill grade. Every time I would try to accelerate from a stop the rear would slide off the crown of the road and towards the shoulder. This happened a few times until the front would lock in and start pulling. Definitely an unnerving feeling. Maybe there’s some way to program the rear to slip less before the front kicks in.
HELL YEAH BROTHER. This is exactly what I've been bench racing in my head for years. Couldn't decide between using a SCSB, Silverado SS or an AWD SUV (Denali/Escalade).
I hope this series gets you a lot of subscribers - this is awesome stuff. I don't know why there isn't more AWD GM stuff out there, thanks for spelling it out for us.
I'm really looking forward to seeing some footage in the snow. When I first purchased my 8.1L Yukon I lived in Denver. Getting moving in the snow in 2WD was tough because of the torque. I could shift to Auto 4WD, but I hated the delay in the front axle engaging, plus the binding that would occasionally come with sharp turns. This should be pretty sweet to see as it comes together!
Love watching your builds! Because of you over the past year I have accumulated three cool donor vehicular and wish you were closer to me to do the build. After watching big blaze I found a surviving southern 1977 blazer Chalet camper as the vehicle. I then set my sights on finding a LBZ Duramax and was lucky enough to find a one owner Silverado that lived on Marthas Vineyard all its life and only has 33,000 original miles. I then found a southern 2 owner 2009 Saab 97x aero with the ls2 with the awd system you just mentioned on this video. Boy I have some great options for this build. This would make some good content if I was a RUclipsr.
I remember the swap you did in a GMT400 on that tv show. Just have to make that one side front diff bracket. I had an 02 Denali truck in 04 and man did it go good! Tapping the speed limiter, late to Bruins game, down 93 like it was a BMW 7 series. For a truck, even at stock ride height, it handled flat and solid. Lowered it would have been an absolute weapon.

I had no doubts you would go this route :-) I myself am very into all this AWD/4WD GM transfer cases. Having a 2005 Escalade EXT and building an overland rig, I want to switch to AWD+low range transfer case. GM offered this with NR4 package on limited number of 2003-2006 GMT800 SUVs. It uses BW4482 transfer case, instead of BW4481. Btw, BW4481, used on 2003-2006 Escalades/Denalis DOES NOT require any wiring (apart from speed sensor). Yes, these years Escalades have electronics, but that's for traction control (RPO code JL4), it has nothing to do with the transfer case. So I wouldn’t hesitate to install BW4481 in a street truck. Another advantage of 4481 comes when you bundle it with 4L80 transmission. You can take a transfer case input shaft from BW4484 (2007-2014 Escalades/Denalis), which already splined for 4L80 output shaft. You can also get the whole BW4484 transfer case and it will be a direct bolt on to 4L80. Good luck with ur project! Cheers, Pavel
good info on the interchangeable inputs for the 32 spline, that's good to know. the only reason why I didn't consider a BW AWD transfer case is because they essentially are an open differential in the middle, and they rely on the ABS system to pulse the brakes if one wheel loses traction and starts to spin too fast. Think of an open differential in snow/ice: the wheel with the least amount of grip tends to spin the most, leaving you stuck, or spinning. But if you can apply the brakes on the fastest spinning wheel (what GM does in a BW AWD equipped truck) it can shift some of the power to the wheel with more grip but less wheel speed. You are correct that the BW cases use no electronics directly, they do rely on the ABS system to control wheel slip which is a feature my truck does not have. But, the NV149 viscous coupled and NP120 Torsen mentioned are more like a limited slip differential, so its easier for it to split and manage the power flow evenly, and does not need intervention from the ABS system. (or at least thats how I understand it lol)
@@LawrenceTolman You are 100% correct, I only wonder how long viscous coupling (which is, AFAIK, is not available brand new, at least from GM) or Torsen would live behind turbo 8.1 :-)
You'd be surprised how well the NP246 does in "AUTO 4WD" setting. This setting enables the use of the viscous coupler in that transfer case to work like an AWD setup, and locks in the front axle. I had an '03 RCSB 4WD that was 4.8L and 60e that I autocrossed competitively for a couple years in SCCA events using that setting.. It never flinched once, not a single time and the difference in handling was hugely noticeable vs RWD only. It was nice to switch back to RWD for hooning moments too.. I originally was planning to duplicate this exact setup (and I had all the parts to do it), but I autocrossed it once with the NP246 and it was seemless.. I never had a single problem with that case and I beat it to death on dry pavement in the Auto 4WD setting. Just my $0.02.. Glad to see more competitive truck builds and can't wait to see Ugly Truck with rebuilt trans !

awesome man. i literately just picked up a 02 Silverado with a 5.3 swap but it is 2wd. but it was a steal. less then 80k miles garage kept, and only $3k. awd twin turbo is gunna be my end goal with this truck im so glad i found this video with all this useful info. keep up the good work my guy and happy new year.

Psychlone lol Overall with the rear driveshaft it will be 3/4- 1” too long and will bottom out in the tcase. Especially with it lowered. Been there. Another thing I do when I do the swap is just leave the factory front diff in and swap the passenger half shaft and housing out. Saves time and you know you already have a good front diff. Though it is a good time to be doing your front axle seals and check the lash adjusters/retainers holding in the carrier bearings to make sure they haven’t fallen in. Obviously when it does will result in drag and burning out the viscous coupler. If you get into doing the front diff ie: bearings etc. You should do a video on it to properly teach a fella how to rebuild them as it can get ‘fun’ and would be some good education for some folks looking to do the same thing. For the tcase warning light just unplug the tccm (transfercase control module) while the truck is off and it won’t show any warnings anymore. Easy peasy.
I'm running the older front diff in my 00 sierra just used the factory passenger side axle housing from the my original diff been over two years and still working great 👍👌💪
AWD is awesome in the snow I drove mine in the winter in Interior Alaska. Mines 6.0 4l85e AWD. Coilovers all around. Getting ready to pull the 6.0 and toss my extra 8.1 into it and ditch the 4 link rear setup for a 2016 mustang gt IRS I have laying around.
Watched your video and it gave me an idea. I happen to have a 03 sierra 2wd short wide and a wrecked 07 gmc denali. So I combined the 2 and made an awd 6.2 6l80e with the 4485 case. I can swap the case later. But it took 3 of us friends 2 days to get it running. I'm not a video editor but I took a couple clips of what we did. Thanks for the inspiration. Love the videos 🤘
I’m building a 98 Olds Bravada with a supercharged V6, keeping AWD and a manual trans swap! A 99+ SCSB AWD is one I’ve always wanted to build as well. But currently also have a Blazer ZR2 that is getting a twin turbo gen5 with a T56 and AWD that should be a monster!
Super nice video, subscribed and liked. So much parasitic loss with a supercharger though. Since I went turbo I'll never go back. Using turbo lag as traction control can be a huge advantage and make street driveability and tuning a breeze.
I have a 2003 ss silverado. 6.0 AWD it rode great in ohio during the winter! Drove like it was on tracks in the snow and ice. While others were sliding off the highway no traction ⛄️
Do the viscous, she's really old at this point, like me. Had to rebuild t-case in my son's clapped out Denali he bought based on childhood memories of mine. I'd still consider building another Denali/SS(with Denali parts) clone even now. Brand new trucks are no better than a built Denali, they just look different. 800 is still my favorite body style.
these are very neat, worke like a fan clutch or torque converter, fluid is holding the power. the back drive shaft gets 100 percent of the power all.the time, and the front drive shaft is parasitic and can put up to 38 percent of the power to the front drive shaft

I’m sure you’ve already driven it in the winter by now, well hopefully anyway! Just wanted to add my little bit of input on driving an awd gmt800 in the snow and ice. i LOVE it. My daily is an 02 Escalade awd with the 6 litre and it’s a beast. There is literally nothing that will stop it and it always powers through. I’m building a rcsb gmt800 right now with the Escalade front end and cladding, and I’m still deciding whether I will build it awd or 2wd.
That viscous coupler in the transfer case is a ticking time bomb. I had a 2002 yukon denali, went through 3 transfer cases. I love the idea of awd but be careful of the new venture gear transfer case.
@@LawrenceTolman the coupler is self contained inside the case. It uses a different type of fluid and is known to crack and mix the fluids. After about 30 min of driving my truck would not slip and allow the truck to maneuver parking lots or sharp turns (locked in 4wd). After it would cool down, it would function properly again.

I will miss the ability to switch into 2wd for burnouts and hoonage, but I guess thats what the other truck will be for

LS and use an electronic bypass controller on the blower so you can dial out the boost in bad weather.

Just an FYI the 700r4 is a 4 bolt tail like the th350. The 4l60 was the start of the 6 bolt tail.

Just wanted to add my little bit of input on driving an awd gmt800 in the snow and ice.
i LOVE it.
My daily is an 02 Escalade awd with the 6 litre and it’s a beast. There is literally nothing that will stop it and it always powers through.
I’m building a rcsb gmt800 right now with the Escalade front end and cladding, and I’m still deciding whether I will build it awd or 2wd.
I decided on AWD 😁
That viscous coupler in the transfer case is a ticking time bomb. I had a 2002 yukon denali, went through 3 transfer cases. I love the idea of awd but be careful of the new venture gear transfer case.

@@LawrenceTolman the coupler is self contained inside the case. It uses a different type of fluid and is known to crack and mix the fluids. After about 30 min of driving my truck would not slip and allow the truck to maneuver parking lots or sharp turns (locked in 4wd). After it would cool down, it would function properly again.
