'89 Honda Prelude 4WS components should work just fine lol
Timmy MacGruber Those are dainty parts I was thinking about the GMC the built in 2010 or close to those years.
Timmy MacGruber There was a company that was saying they were going to build aftermarket one for the f150... That was like two months ago though. I like more the idea or finding the part's that weren't designed to do it and make it all work together.
Gotta love Chevys interchangeability and aftermarket support!
Aman brother preach it
Cheap, good parts too. Not just cheap chinese crap
+Carlos And they make the best V8 engines in the world.
So interchangeable!
Cuts out frame and body parts and fabs new ones.
Robert Anderson it was cut before for lift kit all gms need the front dif bracket modified for 6” + lift kits
I never thought I’d see the day when a 90s Chevy truck looks like a cool classic lol. Time sure does fly
454 SS was an instant classic for sure
Jake along with the Sierra GT and ST trucks.
Considering that today’s trucks looks like Aztecs, it’s not surprising.
That's a89 I do believe
Doesn't look classic to me because those trucks were so common along with the 80s body
Lowered 4wd? Hell nah! Lowered AWD? 👌 Sounds good
LeGoogle Chrome Glad someone said it, as soon as I head it I was like 🤦♂️
lowered 4x4's look great and 99% of them never see offroad
trillrif axegrindor lowered AWD for dragstrips you dumb nut watch the video
"Ya hear the sound change? That's how you know you're in."
Ahhh THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!
Shoot! You beat me to it 😂 lol
Atta boy😎
I used to watch these shows religiously for over 20 years and it's great to see them again and learn more. I've never seen an AWD conversion on one of these trucks. My uncle had one, he bought it new in 89 as a 90 and kept it until 08, his was a maroon stepside. A girl I new, her dad had a two tone beige fleetside like that one. I read in my great uncle's obituary that he was apparently instrumental in the program for these GMT400 trucks, getting them designed and engineered.
I have watched all the Saturday shows for a long time. This is the coolest project so far.
They were getting cheesy. This project is legit.
I’ve been a professional auto tech since 2003, I worked at jiffy lube before that, I was in my grandfathers garage starting at a very young age probably 10 years old watching and learning how to do brakes and stuff like that. My grandpa retired right around the time I was born (1984) he worked for a factory that made gears for transmissions and all kinds of machinery and he was an aircraft engineer in the Korean War back in the 50’s so he was an extremely smart man I learned so much from him Hes the reason why I got into the automotive field. So for something to do he would pick up lawnmowers people were throwing away and that’s how I first learned how engines worked. So when I started to work for a real shop I had quite a head start. After being a auto tech for nearly 20 years and I own my own repair shop I am burnt out on doing regular repairs I really miss doing custom work like taking a 4cyl car and stuffing a v8 in it, taking apart transmissions and engines. Don’t get me wrong I take apart a lot of engines but the newer stuff isn’t fun to work on like the older stuff it just feels like work the older stuff doesn’t feel like work as much. Watching videos like this really inspires me to get back into custom work!! I have a shop at home as well and I have an idea to build some older cars that I might try out. I was thinking about buying an old car, install 5.3, 4l60, get it running and driving well and sell them. But I won’t be building the entire car just do the power train swap to get running and driving well and sell them like that so the person buying the car can have a car that’s going to be reliable but they still have to do interior, body and suspension work. Basically so the average guy can afford to buy an old car and fix it up as they have money.
Hey man that could be a new future endeavor for your and it’s awesome you waiting to help people out with a REAL car or truck that’s reliable! Good look to you sir! Ps my great great grandfather was also a machinist from Denmark among many other skills he had. I wish I could have picked his brain these days
18:25 I think I've replace dozens of those actuators for customers, but it was always RIGHT after the first snow when they had already had to call us to pull them out the ditch, it got to the point where we just kept a few new ones in the shop for when winter came
keep the switch in stock, too. 2 most frequent culprits of failure in this design, and they're both cheap!!
After working on Chevys for 35 years, the interchangeability, even from the 50's, is unreal. Almost like they planned it that way. Can't be coincidence.
Hey i need some advise im not to knowledgeable when it comes to parks in are changing everything but I have a 98 c1500 v6 manual 5speed 2door short bed chevy and i wanna do something to give it some guts but nothing that a guy with a limited budget and limited knowledge will be able to do any one got some suggestions or advise to a guy who's been in love with thid year amd wanna give some life to my obs..
@@MrMrBurnablunt 75 shot of nitrous, cooler plugs, electric fuel pump, distributor able to retard timing.
When I saw LT lower a 4WD, I thought he'd lost his mind. Now, I'm super impressed. This is a very cool build!
You are killing it, @Lawrence LT Tolman. This build and your in depth theory and design is invaluable to us with GMT400s. 👍👍
This is the exact build i am looking to do soon, to the freakin dot! geez! So sweet
I love this generation of truck....I want one soon
I was told by the trans shop that the AWD transfer case is made out of magnesium
Make sure that you have all the sweet snap-on tools and the budget as well as a certed GM Goodwrench Master tech on the payroll like these guys... Remember he isnt spending YOUR money, you are, and he ordered that front diff "on a whim, not knowing if it would fit", and lucked out..... Just saying, easier to spend someone else's money than your own. Just saying, from watching multiple episodes of this and other PowerNation shows, the point is not to show you so much what can be done, as what can be done with money that doesn't come from your own pocket.
@@supramaniac502 only thing that was modded was the bracket and the input shaft the rest is pretty much bolt on. Parts are readily available. Diff is about 1200 and transfer case is around the same, and thats remanufactured so its pretty much new.
@@JoseContreras-mv5yz then let's add the cost of the built trans, the $3,500 for the long block, the necessary mods to the fueling system, the custom driveshaft (s), and so on and you could have just BOUGHT a used truck that already had most of this gear in a newer body. Oh, but then it wouldn't be "custom"... Don't show me a what a$12-15k budget will do. Show me how much I can do to increase performance to the level they are talking about with some harbor freight tools and $2,500 for the mods. That's what I WANT to see.... This equates to budget flexing imho
I did this same build like 4 years ago with 93 a 2 door tahoe and a 6.0 instead of a 5.3
Any pictures we can see?
@rocknroller1999 unfortunately I wrecked it driving in a bad snow storm and as far as power it was a stock LQ4 with a mild cam So I would assume mid 300s I did replace it with a hummer h3 alpha so a GM built awd 5.3 powered suv
I think hiring Lawrence Tolman was an excellent choice. I watch his other videos and appreciate them greatly. Good luck at Piwer Nation, buddy.
I love it! my first truck was 1988 GMC red just like that. well 4X4 and long box. but I never loved another truck like that one. Done many things together from hauling 2380 pounds pallet of wood to pushing snow. to some great rides with my best friend, my dad!
Can we get links to buy the parts used in this build? I have a 94 GMT 400 I'm looking at swapping to ls and AWD
Love the way the show is stylized and filmed. Reminds me of the stuff I grew up watching on Speed channel with my uncle and grandpa on Saturday mornings.
This is why I love Chevy and why I work at the Chevy dealership. There is so many combinations that you can come up with to be able to build to your own perfection. But here recently 2015 and up their starting to change but I am a diehard Chevy fan because I’ve been interchanging parts from the 1950s all the way to 2007 from axles to engines to transfer cases it’s unbelievable you never be able to do that with a Ford 😎
You can do that with a Ford. Your not special. I put a 460 big block from a 97 F350 into a 77 F250 and it bolted right up to the trans and frame with no modification. Minor splicing of the wiring, but the ECU plays nice with the original 77 body wiring harness. The AOD family of transmissions introduced in 1980 was still in use up until 2013, with very minor changes but interchangeable non the less. The Windsor family of engines introduced in 1960 where used until 2000. While the heads where improved over the years, you can bolt GT40 heads onto a 70s mustang and they fit. Even the body mounts for their trucks are in identical spots dating back to the 5th gen, meaning you can bolt a 71 body onto a 6.0 chassis and the mounts line up. No need to fabricate custom body mounts.
@@sham_wow_guy congrats do you want a cookie or something?
Sham_WoW_Guy there is quite alot of interchangeability with Ford( i love the body mount thing especially), it is kind of a no shit thing that a 460 would bolt in place of what originally came with a 460 though lmao not hating on ya like these knuckle dragging brand biased dumbasses, just wanted to joke around a little
Greg Rogers
Sorry to hear that. There may be medication to help treat your affliction.😁
As a ford guy, I do like how interchangeable Chevy parts are. I actually converted my 4x4 03 ranger to AWD and swapped a 5.0 V8 into it and only had to make minor modifications to the wiring harness to make it all work. Engine/trans/transfer case bolted right up and I used my stock driveshafts
I've been waiting for someone to do this for an eternity
I rebuilt my 04denali front diff my self 100$ for the brearings and seals. Drove 500 miles I still hear it. Buy rebuilt for 1200 swap in . More noise and same slight amount of metal on drain magnet. Im sure they sent me a 250k rebuild and my 125k is even quieter LOL. Pro tip. you can set the gear lash in that diff without the tool just loosen the two case halfs and do it by hand slowly. LOL. takes a couple trys . Then I removed the adjusters and drilled a hole and left the drill piece in the adjuster so they could never move without disassembly. The fault with these AWD 6.0 engine diffs was the tab would break and the adjusters would back out giving you huge backlash in your diff. Plus the fact its the basically the same as the part time 5.3 diff but running more power all the time now.
Best build I've seen on this show so far. Love it!
This is a pretty AWESOME project. I really appreciate that this is not a run of the mill "done a million times" truck👍👍👍
it' easier when it is not your money!
Not their fault youre broke
@rocknroller1999 not true you need all the tools the lift , and work extra miles to get the money after your normal week , it is not every bodys who can get sponsers and don't forget the time involved here we are with famely too!
I'VE SEEN GUYS WORK UNDER A SHADE TREE AND DO SOME BADASS WORK. STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND BEING NEGATIVE.
Every single vid without fail there's at least one that bitches and whines about the cost of the builds. It's an idea show. That's it. It's to give you ideas for your own projects, that you build on your own budget. They don't intend you to mimic the build, unless you have the cash and want to
Jealousy is a terrible emotion.
I love this build! Makes me even more annoyed that ford canceled the AWD Lightning resurrection!
This whole build it’s just chefs kiss
Most exciting truck project that I've seen in a while
MY 1995 K1500 was lowered 10 plus years ago it has the posi lock manual control in the front axle. Its got a built 406 and heavily modified 4L60E. I wish I had done the 4l80E I've done the modifications for the 1999-2006 spindles knuckles and 2007 up brake rotors, calipers, and brackets. I also added hydroboost and have 99-2006 Escalade rear discs. I have a 6 lug 14 bolt full floater axle to add some time. I also have the Holley EFI multiport going in with an electric fan set up. The EFI I think is the HP an older setup but still with touch screen n fully programmable.
LT’s welds we’re so clean on that bracket, Pat thought it was a bolt on. 😅
I’ve got a 1994 k1500 with 37” tires on it and 298,000 miles on original motor. Still runs! If you want another project for motor swap….😁
I had a thermal activator go out on my '92, I got a new one from the dealership, but it was an updated mechanical version with a shim, and an extra wire, that I had to splice into the transmission speed sensor. It wasn't very complicated and went into 4 wheel drive instantly.
Hay freedom first, if that complicated extra wire one gives you a problem when it's real cold out thay make one with a cable you pull no wires
I need one of those input shafts!!!! Where did you get it.
Very cool build. Something different and unique. Perfect candidate for a turbo or pro charger.
I cant afford that bullshit
Like how all 3 Channels Coming Together
I used to have a shortbox Chevy Silverado C1500. Love these episodes!
I love when any of his sentences starts with, "all we have to do is..." followed by a task I could never do on my own.
Your skill set is incredible. well done
Yes that's exactly what I was hoping y'all would do
Those thermal actuators are EXCELLENT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT GETS INTO SOME CHILLY OR JUST REGULAR SHADED MUDDT AREAS SHORTLY AFTER A HEAVY ENOUGH RAIN STORM IT DISENGAGES YOUR 4 WHEEL DRIVE ( 2 WHEEL DRIVE) AND MAKES THE OLE TRUCK A 1 WHEEL WONDER :0) IT GETS CONFUSED BY THE SUDDEN " COLD" SIGNAL SHUTTING OFF YOUR 4 WHEEL DRIVE LITERALLY WHEN ITS SUPPOSED TO BE NEEDED MOST! NEVER HAD IT OCCUR IN A HEAVY SNOW BUT IM SURE IT WOULDNT BE a stretch to expect similar results!
they're easily swapped to the 96+ mechanical acutators
I wish you guys would stick to building instead of testing junk trucks and re-testing when finished! Get a professional driver if you feel you have to test the truck! Love your show and look forward to the next episode! This goes for XOR also!
I love my 04 Denali awd but this thing is insane! Great job. Can't wait for the next video.
good visual guys, ive been looking into how the 8.25 firs works
You forgot to change the oil pump plate over to the case-saver that doesn't knock a hole in the 149 transfer case. Everything I read on my 04 Denali said you'd be a fool not to, while you're in there.
LOL sneaking in that blue paint on the trans was awesome
I love Pat being surprised that LT built the mount
If I had that shop full of tools and all the free parts they get, I could build some nice custom stuff too.
Still has drums on the rear! Cool truck
Really nice setup
I'm building one with an L94 6L80 AWD in a 85 K5. Just finished the 14 bolt and Dana 60. Will be done soon.
Such a good looking build, whomever bought it got a heck of a deal.
ive been wanting to pick up a extended cab and do this. But i was also worried if the swap would work, good to know that it works wuth a little fab work
Who makes the 32spline input? I’m on the market for one!

It's $635....
An AWD transfer case from 07 and newer denalis and Escalades Have 32 spline and no sensors on them.
@@13Bender31 😬
@@JoseContreras-mv5yz I took mine to a local machine shop and they have a wire EDM machine that they used to cut the 32 spline without having to anneal and heat treat again. Cost $200.
I envy the level of skill some mechanics have
David Frieburger is responsible for those ceramic plug wire boots!!! Its his design and idea
I've always had the idea of doing this to a ZR2 Blazer and make it a 2nd gen Typhoon with a boosted LS.
That, that's actually not a bad idea! I suspect a Astro or Bravada TC would be needed. Not sure about the front diff. The spider injection would be a pita.
Very nice! Part time to full time T-case.
I have owned a 2001 C3 AWD since I bought it in 2003 with 11K miles on it. I always loved my AWD, if I could finish up on some of these cars I have I would not mind making my now 19 year old truck into a project truck.
I love the C3's!! They got the 6.0 vortec right?
@@SubieandFriends yes that's right 6.0
@@davegt27 nice engine! I also love the front of end of the C3's, it's projector headlights make the front end look alot more nicer then the front end of regular Silverado/Sierra's. I believe the exhaust on the C3 also sound more meaner too, I also remember the optional rear quadra steer system available on Sierra denalis and on some other Sierras and Silverados trim models. Man I love the GM trucks from all generations!
Was gonna do this too, but I would rather buy yours! Now that I know what it takes.! Holy beep! That’s an awesome truck! Great job. Wow!
Although we're at odds on the 5.3 as target engine, I am actually looking at that same Holly setup myself. Can't say enough about that unit and it's overall potential. Definitely think Holly is the first pic for any mod due to the simplicity and compatibility.😎✌️
Every character they have on these shows all have exactly the same delivery, it’s like they are automitrons.
One of my favorite power nation builds
11:25 "hey guys...uh Tommy, shoes off in my shop buddy"
T: "but what about Pat?"
LT: high pitched voice " WHAT ABOUT PAT....ya see tom i actually respect Pat so get them damn shoes off!!"
Couldn't help but cringe at 9:27. You can't hammer on ball bearings like that!! They're not meant to handle axial loads like that! you'll bend the cage!
Yeah ya can...I always hammer on bearings without issue...Relax there spark
The Executioner no you can’t. You’ll bend the cage which will make the bearings wear prematurely into the races and the cage itself. These are ball bearings, not roller bearings that maybe you’re more used to seeing
Nice weld job!
Did you have to drill new bolt holes for the cross member to lock the transmission to the frame. I noticed this part wise was left out of the building of red tide.
..so basically this series is one long commerical for Powertrain Products...ok got it.
This is too funny, we are in the process right now of taking my father’s 88 plow truck and putting a 5.3 out of an 01 half ton, We plan to keep the rest of the drive train stock we are just worried about the 700R4
It can Handle it
might go 4l60/4l80 since you are dealing with the ecm anyway and probably getting a new driveshaft.
It's been done in an s10 by fasterproms, but not sure about obs
But faster proms has a manual transmission 😉
This episode is older than the one faster proms did, so it might be.
Does all of this work for the tahoes as well?
just picked up 2 of these transfercases for my 02 yukon denali
i need 1 of those new fron difs 😁
Solid axle front ends are the only way to go there so much better
Is there a list of parts, part numbers used in this build. I am particularly interested in the Holley Terminator, LS High Ram Intake manifold and make/model of injectors used. I would assume injectors were unpgraded from stock LS Vortec.
Out of curiosity, why didn't you go for the truck intake and the truck fuel rail? The truck/suv intake is technically a high-rise, and the fuel rails are almost the size of a coke can.
Why not mention the guy who makes the 32 spline input? He is on all the truck forums. If you then you know I guess.
Me and my son are building the same truck but i purchase a 07 cadillac escalade 6.2 and i just purchase the motor mount bracket and everything bolt on even the rear driveline was the right size
What if you wanted to make a 2WD AWD would you just need the differential, transfer case, axles and possibly the “4WD” control arms or what control arms?
Any advice for a beginner? I have a project and its a 1953 chevy pickup I have a 292 I'm wanting to put in with a 5 speed. I would love to try and make it awd but I'm over my head any advice would be appreciated.
I think I may have already commented this but the 2009 H3 all came with cast iron front diffs way stronger than the aluminum one
I had a 99 1500 5.3 z71. Would tac 2000rpm at 80mph. I now have a 2005 1500 5.3 z71 and it tac's almost 3000rpm at 80. Sticker says it has 4:10 ratio. Is that stick or special order?
Stock
I like this project. I want this truck with a 440 ci lsx 88mm turbo for some AWD burnouts.
I want to convert my 2000 GMC 3500HD dually to 4WD. It has the factory I-beam axle in the front with leaf springs, a Dana 80 in the rear, 7.4 Vortec (454) and a 4L80E trans. Not sure if I should go with a Dana 60 or Dana 70 in the front. Any advice? Is one axle easier to work with?
Now that it's all wheel drive , Does it still buck and fight you when you turn a tight corner?
No.
Shouldn't really do that either way but definitely not in awd since frontand rear axles are viscous coupled. Nobody makes a locker forthe front diff so it's always "open". Should be fine cornering now
They do make lockers for front diffs lmfao who told u that??? Been using em mud boggin since moby dick was just a minnow! Learn the facts people don't just blurt out some off the wall garbage
@@cc23001 shut up
Thanks LT!
IDK when this originally aired, but Jared and Lou did this on Car Fix with a 4WD Blazer a while back.
Question- wouldn't it be easier to mount the accessories onto the engine BEFORE putting it in the truck? At least most of them?
not really, the ps pump is a pita with the steering shaft in, but otherwise the rest is a cakewalk, alt is right up top, and unless notching the frame for the low mount compressor you're running a higher up ac compressor anyways. water pump is 6 bolts easy to access, and better to leave off until it's in, especially if you're not pulling the rad or condensor
Being awd is the coolest thing about this build
So glad I ran across this video! I swapped out my rear gears and haven't done the front yet, that differential looks like a definite Improvement without going solid axle, plus I'm not sure if they make a Detroit or Locker for the factory one or if you would want to try to do that? No I dont want to go solid...$ cost, truck see 80% pavement and kinda hi speeds for the lift as it is, For you guys that daily nitrous fed supercharged turbo military tanks and everyone else is a poser 😉
If you want an improved version of the NV149, get one out of a 2003 to 2015 GM H series AWD cargo van. They shipped with a BorgWarner 4471 or 4473, which are way better than the NV149, since the NV149 is technically an open diff, and if you remove the front input shaft, it will not transfer power to the rear.
Bw4481/83/85
I need info on the company that built your input shaft adapter. I need to be able to run a 4l80e also
Umm, do you guys sell any of your vehicles that have been built on the show?
I have a 2004 SS that needs some love, wiring, speedo not working, heated seats are bad, and some suspension work is needed, but the truck runs and drives well. If you guys need a new project truck, and want to fix this for the show, let me know..haha..
One of the best if not the best builds iv seen him to this is a great idea 👍🇺🇸
11:00 Would this be a good time to install a Slip Yoke Eliminator kit on the NV149 or is there a reason why an SYE conversion shouldn't be used in this type of application? Keep the videos coming!
I have 2014 silverado can I put a 4x4 posi-lok on diffential and turn switch in truck to 4x4 will that work for temporary.
This guy's a genius
Uh, definitely not the first to do this, nice try!!! Did this last summer to my 97 OBS Short bed. Used the drivetrain out of a wrecked SS, including motor. Has a 4/6 drop.
Did you make your own passenger bracket?
You men are great! I would love for you to make my 1986 chevy c30 crew cab all wheel drive!
The difference between AWD and 4wd is AWD has a clutch on the front driveshaft that burns out the second u put bigger rims and tires on it. Seen it time and time again on any lifted big tire AWD truck.
Thanks for carrying on on you tube
