Is it possible that this is the 55-inch version? The 55-inch U8N appears remarkably similar to last year’s model, than to the 65-inch U8N. It’s unfortunate that the brightness falls short to their advertisement, considering that Hisense’s website claims it can achieve 3,000 nits peak brightness.

      @zacharyambrose2104 2 месяца назад +3

I just got the 75 u8n in today which seems like it's an ADS- PRO cuz the viewing angles are much better than my other VA tv. I emailed hisense before my purchase and they said the 75 inch would come with VA so idk what's going on. I would have to disagree with some of his opinions on color presentation across the different video modes. Sports and vivid do come in juiced up with a good bit of blue but theater and filmmaker mode look like they do on other tvs I own. Those modes are normally made to be a touch washed to achieve better accuracy. It's possible his is a VA and mine isn't, hence the complaints. The 75 inch looks good to me so far. He may just be the type that likes a more saturated punchy look.
Update: I returned the unit, it had light bleed issues with black bars in movies like the 75u8k and 75u7k

First off, this channel is awesome. I'm just discovering it, but already love the coverage.
But man this is really unfortunate. With my industry kind of in a hiatus, I decided to make this the year I dial in my HT/Screening space for friends to come watch movies and view their projects. I have very quickly realized there's a lot of compromises under $3000.
I bought a S90C (77" w/ the 2nd Gen panel) and was kind of left luke warm feeling with Samsung processing and lack of DV (only because my Nvidia Shield is incapable of DV tone mapping and doesn't support HDR10+). I have bought a Zidoo Z9X Pro to hopefully solve the latter issue, but I still find the Samsung to make too many decisions for me during processing. I have been looking at this as a possible replacement as the combination of high brightness (at least on 65" - 75") and both DV/HDR10+ support should improve my consistency with HDR handling of different content, but have seen a total of 0 people talk about processing at all.
This issue along with the others in your first video would totally kill this as an option for me. Do you think theres any chance the 75" is devoid of any of these issues with the change in panel or would you have any advice on where to look next if not? I know I could buy my way out of this hole with the Sony A95L or new Bravia 9, but I can't justify the cost when I'm upgrading a bunch of other things at the same time.

If it doesn't, the 2023 carry-over Sony X90L with Live Color set to Medium for SDR and Off for HDR10 might be a good bang for the buck. Although there's also the new LG QNEDs and Samsung QN85D. I'm talking about $1,100 55-inch and $1,300 65-inch models for you to consider doing Quantum TV style.

  • @zooboy39

How did you feel about black bar performance? I received my 75U8N to review and your thoughts are par for the course for me as well (so far, first impressions with about 2 hours of view time). Flat image out of the box, contrast is extremely lacking at times (unless you have an isolated subject on a black screen), and colors are off. But the number one thing that is making it hard to even like the TV is the black bar performance.
I'm not sure what algorithm Hisense is using, but this seems bad, even accounting for being spoiled by OLED the last 4 years. I'm curious if the blooming is just a normal occurrence due to the potential IPS panel, or my panel is not great; probably the former but still. Settings were local dimming set to "High", peak brightness "Low" boosted the contrast to 80, black level -1, and it didn't really help, to me.
Anyways, thanks for the good video breaking down the issues!

I picked up the 55 U8N a couple of days ago. Unfortunately I have to agree with pretty much everything said here. Out of the box, its rouuuuuugh. The black levels are insane. Adjustments are difficult as one setting doesn't make a big difference have to adjust lots of settings to get anywhere. I use mostly as PC desktop and have been using 55 LG Oleds as my desktop for last 3 gen's and have ended up with burnin on all of them so figured would give this a try. I've adjusted standard to be fairly bearable. 4K HDR Dolby Vision content is stunning. Really getting sick of manufactures using crap panels for 55" models and hiding it by using the same model as the larger screens and advertising the better specs. Hoping updates and better calibrations come out as I'm horrible at finding the best settings will improve things more.

The U8N failed to make its perennial spot as mid-priced tv of the year. So clearly the issues are being noticed by other evaluators as well. But, reading through this thread, it seems that the 55" model may perform significantly differently than the larger models. I'd be interested to hear even your quick impression of a larger model. A glance on a showroom floor would either reaffirm the dull, flat output or strike you as completely different and perhaps closer to the hype.

    Thanks for the post!
Peak Brightness is the hype now. I have a gamer friend who recently bot a $2000 Samsung 75" (don't know the model) but the blacks are impressive in a completely unlit room at night. However he has HDR cranked up so bright it hurts my eyes - he thinks it's great.
The NTSC calibration test image had a flickering blue square where you had to turn down the brightness so you could see the square flicker - if it didn't you were oversaturating the phosphor. The resulting image was pretty dim, but it was the best you could get. Theaters are bright either.
I'm all about Pitch Dead OLED Blacks. I would never be near peak nits since I watch in a totally dark room.
My question would be to get test patterns to see what's going on starting with grayscale. Not sure what color calibration test patterns for hue and saturation would entail. Another thing is what sort of upconversion is going on? Supposedly the K (and N) have a much improved upconversion. I don't know if that is controllable or what it could be doing. I also know there are some weird Windows 10 color shifts when you watch in a black room - can anything like that be going on?
I know the TCL at Best Buy really pops, but that is an extremely bright store environment which is no indication how the set will be with the brightness significantly lowered for dark room viewing.
I may have seen a Hisense, not sure if a K, but it was flat in the store. It might have been an H or a U7 - don't remember.
I was about to buy the 65U8K but when I got ready to buy, their raised the price and I hesitated and then heard of the N which boasted better blacks - and for me, BLACKS is all that really matters.
My initial thinking was get the N or if way cheaper the K or even the U7K if even cheaper.
Then I saw Best Buy selling the 65" N for $1500. LOL. That will NEVER happen. I bot the 55H7B over 10 years ago @ Walmart Black Friday and with a VA panel, it was a very good TV until there was an accident and I knocked it over and the screen hit a sharp object about 2" down from the top edge - there is image damage (dead area and lines) but it is still actually watchable. It was good enough that I really wasn't going to upgrade until it died - I had my sights set on OLED but was delayed because most sets had ATSC 3.0 tuners which is a deal breaker for me.
Back in the 70's I had 4 Advent Video Beam 7' Front Projectors (4 at the same time - I was a "collector") and was totally hooked on BIG.
BIG is THE #1 most important parameter. I had 11.5' with a GE commercial overhead front proj on my wall. Yes NTSC and NOT sharp but the visceral impact of boxing, football, scifi was off the chart and impossible to achieve with anything "small."
So I'm waiting and also thinking since I watch in a dark room, if I free up a wall, I could go beyond 100 inches with a projector.
Maybe I should buy a cheap interim 65" until I decide what to do. In a short time OLED will be cheaper too. I still think they offer the best for what I'm looking for which is NOT peak brightness.

I had high hopes for this model since CES.. what a let down. The question is why would Hisense ship units that look like this? Hopefully future fw updates will fix/help. But this hurts their Brand when tvs are released this way.

I picked up the 55 inch U7N here at Best Buy. I got home and got some good settings and calibration in. The picture looked decent compared to my 65 inch Sony 65X85J. In a lot of scenes on RUclips in full 2160 at 60 HZ the Sony killed it, but the clarity on the sunsets and sky was better on the U7N. Now I switched over to the gaming side of it. At 4K 60HZ it's one of the most beautiful gaming pictures I've seen to date. The colors. The contrast. The clarity. The motion is amazing. I have a Series X, so i tried it at 120 HZ, there's a lot of breakage at the top of the screen when moving side to side. Disabled VRR, and turned off motion settings, turned them on, etc. nothing changes it. I even got a better ultra high speed HDMI. Decided to take it back and get the Q7 55 inch.

I've seen more positive reviews than negative ones. Way more positive than negative. This review will not change my mind. Maybe you don't know how to tune or calibrate your set.

The only bad review I've seen for the U8N .....I guess u have a problem with Hisense TVs .... maybe u want to sound very professional and different from other reviewers. 🤷‍♂️

Don't by shy. You can fix it

I don't think i can. The u8n has this wild over exaggeration of shadow detail. Makes everything flat and ugly. If you try darkening the image in any way, you get wild posterization. Its a conundrum to say the least.

This is the only bad review I have seen for the Hisense U8N! All of the other reviews I have seen for this TV have been positive! Obviously you got a dud TV it happens!

Dud units don't display picture perfect home screens & store demos like this one did. When you have a picture defect, it presents itself immediately. This tv is really just that bad.

Get the hisense u8n 65in and see if that makes a difference. I heard they have a different amount of dimming zones

2:07 what do you mean by "this particular model"? Your title for this entire video "U8N" literally encompasses all the models. You didn't specify on your title if you're specifically talking about the 55u8n, 65u8n, or 75u8n. So why are you now saying "this specific model". If you're going to discuss first impressions of a specific model (like the 55u8n) shouldn't you reflect that on your title to refer to the 55 inch version and not the generic suffix which encompasses ALL THE MODELS like it's listed on your title? 🤦‍♂️

Ok, I agree with you 100 percent. I have seen this tv already, and you are correct. Demo mode in these budget TV's is to sucker in the consumer and trust me TCL won't be much better in 2024.
But you have to stop comparing TCL and Hisense to Flagship TV'S. They are not Flagship.
They are budget TV's that are comparable to Roku, Amazon TV'S, and even Insignia.
Because the Flagship TV's Samsung, Sony, and LG did drop the ball a little on their 2023 Mini QLED models.
But watch out for 2024. They see what TCL and Hisense did and made a name for themselves but I do believe the hype is over for TCL and Hisense comparing these TV's to Flagship.
They are the best in budget world TV's not Flagship.
So just remember consumers when you buy a Hisense or TCL stop thinking you are in the big league you're not.
You're in the budget league, and like the old saying goes, don't worry, be happy with what you can afford.
