- Alan Wake 2 Review
- I tried to blur all content that is a hint or spoiler, and we were asked to use only the first bits of the game to keep story spoilers low. So that also follows that the review is a bit shorter than normal because while a lot of alan wake is the same, the things that are changed are probably the most important.
"A sequel to Alan Wake, the story follows best-selling thriller novelist Alan Wake, who has been trapped in an alternate dimension for 13 years, as he attempts to escape by writing a horror story involving an FBI agent named Saga Anderson. The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on 27 October 2023.
Alan Wake II incorporates detective elements: when playing as Saga, players can always pause the gameplay to access an enemy-free space dubbed the "Mind Place". Described by Remedy as a "3D menu", the Mind Place is a visual representation of Saga's thoughts. In the Mind Place, players manage a pin board in which they can connect clues to piece together the main mystery, as well as profile characters to gather clues."

This review sponsored by Loki. My fav bitsy dog. We had to put him down recently and I missed him constantly hanging underfoot looking for snacks as I reviewed.
Are you getting Alan Wake 2? Or are you passing it?
This one was insanely hard to even show anything for. Tough embargo restrictions(all for story of course). I tried to blur out what matters but be aware its a story driven game...
Which also means less review video, less time spent. I covered the differences and a bit of the similarities.
Also performance wise its right where remedy said...so its a heavy game on PC but runs right where they said it would overal and looks nice without RT

It does, the AWE DLC in Control was connecting Alan Wake and Control together

This game gives me true detective vibes. Rockstar should take notes from AW2 for L.A.Noire 2
DONT BUY THIS GAME ITS BORING
I'm still bummed there's epic exclusive. I would like to just wait to get this on steam in a year or so.
Much like Bayonetta not coming to XSX or PS5 because Nintendo funds it. I'm sure it'll sell well enough for Remedy to make AW3
Great game except for the constant falling through the map, poor save points, ridiculous load times...and copying a major part of Stranger Things...
I’m just here for the entertainment factor. I already purchased the game on PS5 and played through the first two chapters. So far I’m pretty blown away by the presentation. Especially the music. Looks great too, with the only thing that bothers me is shimmering and artifacting on certain materials.
I’d like to buy this game, but a lack of demos from companies really puts me off. Especially when there’s no physical copy and you cannot refund it if for some reason, you don’t like it all the game causes discomfort. I have visual disabilities, some games I can play absolutely fine, they don’t cause me any discomfort, but other games cause me massive eye pain and headaches. It would be really nice to try out a game before committing to a purchase for these reasons.
If there was a physical copy, it would be so much easier to make the choice.
Definitely got to check out the first game and this when I clear my backlog.
PS5 Physical about to drop in Australian 🇦🇺. It's not cheap, but I hope it's worth the wait👍

My personal experience with the game
-Running around in circles for hours spamming the interaction button wondering what is wrong with me and why am i doing this to myself
-Spamming buttons to escape from layers of menus over menus over menus and spam the click on the photos at mind palace to fit
I guess i was not the target audience hahaha. To bad cause i liked the original Alan wake but this made me bored out of my mind
walking sim
ya i watched my brothers stream when he played this and it was pretty/boring. he said he quit playing it because of the tedium and he too liked the first one.
That has been my experience. Why did they think it made sense to force you to manually build the case tree in the mind fortress thing when the game pushes you through witcher 3 style investigations outside of that to begin with? The whole time I felt like I just wanted to play LA Noire again lol.
That, and all the walking around, made it painfully boring for me.
This game is definitely not for people who like constant combat. This is about exploring, strong narrative, beautiful environments, puzzles, and then combat. Also the detective aspect is one of the most unique aspects of the game. As someone who is tired of the same old games doing the exact same thing, Alan Wake 2 is a breath of fresh air and a complete mind fuck.
As someone who plays every major release every years this just feels so unique.
I’m glad that people have come to love Alan’s melodramatic narration. I remember people saying Alan was an unlikable protagonist in the first game
I mean, he wasn’t the most likable character overall in that first game, but his narration was always top tier. I’d argue the narration in that game was head and shoulders greater in quality than the rest of the character writing and dialogue.
This is coming from somebody who adores that original game, bear in mind. But that dialogue can be *bad*. 😂
@@Zakemaster It's just campy. It's how Remedy likes to play
Here we gooo. Been waiting 13years for this. Now to figure out which platform I’m going to play on 1st. PC or PS5.
It feels like forever
No physical = no buy. For now. Will wait for sub 20 bucks then
Same. Not paying $50 for a digital game
In the series x version there is horrendous graphical and audio issues also a few hours in my play through was soft locked because the game wouldn't exit the mind place. Huge disappointment. Where are the series x reviews?
This sounds like wait for a sale to me.
Ill wait till i upgrade from a 3070m and 5800h laptop. I doubt itll be a playable character experience with my hardware but id buy it full price otherwise

The visuals look absolutely STUNNING. I love they embraced more of the visuals from Control with the “holographics”. They look FKN GREAT. Some of the best visuals in gaming for sure
The writing alone in remedy games is incredible. That man should write a screenplay

Alan Walk 2 is horrible garbage
What a crap game. Its a game that wants to be a movie and fails miserably. Gameplay is frustrating and ridiculous. What a waste of time and money.
Just like all remedy games. Story that makes no sense. What makes this one different? This one has hardly any gameplay.
Because the story makes no sense thats why draw a lot of people into it, because they think its unique and special, yet they actually know nothing about games.
Hey, why do the detective works and collect clues while Saga can just use her super power to know everything? This game has a lot of bad writing.
This is like a mix of Resident Evil and The Evil Within brought together with Alan Wake storytelling. Sounds awesome to me!
It also plays like an old original Xbox game called Still life with an emphasis on crime scene investigation and profiling.
…bit of Silent Hill too but, yea, accurate 👌
While looking like "TLoU2"...
@@S7eventhHeaven investigation lol. it just means finding documents spread around and sticking post notes around without any real control and chance of a mistake.
Sounds good on paper. The game sucks. Not enough combat, camera too close, pointless collecting ammo when enemy encounter is so rare. Storytelling is awful and forced. Investigation is a joke.
On the topic of sound it really can't be understated how well they capture the paranoid feeling of being in the woods at night. One level has many tarps and a rainy windy night, causing sounds that almost sound like fast footsteps running just out of view. That and the fact they you will walk around a lot, not knowing when you'll be jumped by an enemy really adds to the sense of constant paranoia. With alan its even worse, i wouldn't play the chapters in order, instead switching between alan and saga because Alan's chapters usually put me on edge, and his weapon selection is a lot more F**K F**K F**K and a whole less STOP RESISTING! if you know what i mean
Yes fund a company that got rid of the second had market (for this game) are ESG and Epic funded and hired proof readers from Sweet Baby to make it for the modern audience that race swapped a character to add a token black person for that ESG money, how's about no.
Saga has had what…2 minutes of screen time before this game? I don’t believe you had any attachment to her as the white woman we saw like 6 year ago dude
Again they race swapped her for money, she's a token black person so Remedy could boost there ESG score, i.e get money, how are you not seeing the issue here. @@jlake7326
The "not the partner" screen blurb broke me. Well done sir. 😂
Right lol! Hilarious.
….alrighty then
Before I saw it I assumed that was the partner smh
I wish they just took the gameplay feel from the original, and improved on that, instead of just straight up snatching Resident Evil. Makes it feel very lazy. Also the game being a walking simulator is a let down.

It is funny how reviewers say game looks and performs fine while running it on 4090!
The Invincible, a walking simulator got a 9 minute review too. Alan Wake 2 is all the worst parts of Control, most notably dialog that is completely up it's own ass and none of the gameplay... because their is no gameplay. Alan Wake 2 is a point and click adventure.... further proof that Remedy and gaming as a whole is dead. Don't waste your time
As much as I enjoy the combat the least in these games, knowing how painful it is to fight makes the encounters that much more terrifying - hard for me to ask for that to change
Control had excellent combat.
@@gavinderulo12 Alan Wake didn't though.
@@gavinderulo12 different type of games offers different styles of mechanics. So basically the combat not being the best in this atmospheric game is probably intentional.
Does this game have any accessibility opinions? I have a disabled left arm and the first Alan Wake had no accessibility option at all. The controls/buttons weren't re-map-able, it was a struggle trying to play this game with one hand...which I'm able to do with most games due to accessibility options. I wasn't able to finish the first Alan Wake game. The controls wasn't user-friendly for my disability.
@@Deliveredmean42 why would boring, repetitive Combat be intentional
Cheers for blurring the quest text!
I played the first one recently and really enjoyed it. I've always loved how Remedy games have a great atmosphere to them. The music in the first one is outstanding and really gives it a special feel. Glad to know they kept that and I'm looking forward to listening to some new Poets of the Fall.
Did Alan ever explain the race swap with the female agent (who was originally a blonde, white woman)? Was Alan that much of a hack that he wrote agents that ignore dead bodies at their feet? Too many poor writing decisions in this game. The hacks at Sweet Baby Inc ruined this game like they ruined every other game they've touched.
Dude compaired it to true detective seasom 2... an sill said it was good? ... wtf?
This game doesn't remind me of the tone/setting of AW1.. it looks so boring too
To bad its not going to be for me. I really liked the first one, but i am Not a horror person. Horror mystery OK, but not survival horror. Maybe i will watch a lets play
Another poorly optimized game. Don't reward developers for lazyness.
The devs spent so much time for this game. All of the writing and graffiti mumbo jumbo that is scripted together in the dark place, is all hand drawn and different depending on what part of the story you are in. Remady is not lazy
Although I don’t blindly trust the channel like back in the day & he actively avoids buy wait ect for popular games, it’s still my go to channel for a decent overview.

Visuals, sound, story is well made. Gameplay though sucks. Silly time waster puzzles. Sparse combat. Not my type of game but its not a bad game by any means. Wish it was more like control or even first alan wake.
Never really thought I would get a sequel to the first game. This is going to be a good time.
13 years is a long time
Same. I bought the original on release day if I recall correctly. I’m glad Remedy didn’t abandon the property.
Too bad Remedy keeps selling out to Epic, so it's going to be one more year of waiting and playing the remastered first game is probably never going to happen unless I get an Xbox
@@TheLazyFinn if they didn't 'sell out' to Epic we wouldn't have gotten Alan Wake 2
@@DebsonTheDad There's just no way they would have gone under without Epic, most likely they would have gotten more than they ever will from sales if they released on the major PC platforms (especially if the game is permanent ES exclusive) and there is an image hit too (again especially true of the deal is permanent)
Not going tonwatch this video, but just based on the thumbnail, no, I don't support digital only content & won't be buying this, or anything else that does this.
Karak is definitely goated when it comes to video game reviews, but I have a feeling his lukewarm reception and ambivalence towards Alan Wake 2 is similar to how he felt about and reviewed Soma which I thought was absolutely brilliant. With that said, here’s hoping I’ll have a similar sentiment with Alan Wake 2 as I did with Soma.🙏
Since it's not on physical media I'll just wait for sale. I really enjoyed the first one but I have a lot in my back catalogue to play now

Thanks for the review ACG. I love Alan Wake & Control so I've been anticipating this game for a long time.
You mention at the very start of this video that Saga is a character that Alan Wake has created. This is a spoiler. I'm sure you are aware of this fact.
would never buy a epic game exclusive
I have a lot of respect for Remedy as a developer.....but I haven't liked a game of theirs since Max Payne 2. Thought this game looked really visually impressive, it had some cool effects, a neat atmosphere and some entertaining light puzzles..... but the writing was just so up its own ass, despite how basic the story was, that it was constantly making me cringe and ultimately hurt my experience immensely. I spent more time rolling my eyes and saying "we get it, lets move on" than actually feeling any sense of tension or fear. The horror elements were okay at first but got really repetitive and lost their effectiveness after a few chapters. The only thing that was able to give me any kinda tension late game was the obnoxious jump-scares of faces that would pop up before boss fights with Saga. The combat felt very basic which was partially due to the lack of weapon variety and the fact there's really only 2 enemy types....dunno I feel like I'd be a lot less harsh on this game if people weren't hyping it up like a masterpiece. Ultimately the game has a clear vision and I find it cool that Remedy is connecting all their games into one shared universe, but my final thoughts after finishing this game were "finally that ending dragged on forever, and STILL sucked" instead of "that was a good game".
"Remedy is connecting all their games into one shared universe" is a very very very bad moves. Especially when they added so many in this game.
You bring over a character, you bring over the lore, and the lore might crash the world, imagine you bring Resident Evil game Leon into Silent Hill, it will totally change how Silent Hill lores.
Verdict 8:24
ACG, you never disappoint, Sir.
Some things you liked and some things you didn't. I'm sure I will feel the same way. Remedy isn't trying to reinvent the wheel here but had a lofty goal with this sequel. There are many cult fans of the first game after it didn't set the world on fire with sales. It was a unique and different take on horror.
I played the remake last year, and the very first thing I noticed was how much the game played better @60fps.
The original on 360 barely held 30 and with multiple enemies around you with the shine light first to break the darkness mechanic. There were a lot of frustrating deaths. It had been over 10 years for me, so I didn't remember everything. Felt like a new game going back thru it. I died like once this time around with the higher framerate. Low framerates inherently make games more difficult no matter what the devs do. Lastly, I was a little surprised you didn't point out to your viewers that Alan Wake 2 is currently a digital release only. They haven't made any physical copies. As an old school type, I prefer physical copies of games, and I'm wondering how many will be turned off by that and not purchase or support it. Remedy has been screwed over by MS. Good to see them get the rights back to Alan Wake. It was the only way they were making another along with a remaster of the first game. I'm super excited Rockstar is allowing Remedy to remaster the first Max Payne games. Can't wait for those.
This review told me nothing about the game 😅... I have watched 5 reviews and only 1 of them actually talks about how they actually felt about it

This is truly a next gen title. Ambient sound design is incredible as well as the graphics, atmosphere and environments. Remedy always pushed the industry forward in graphical fidelity. Max Payne 1 when it released was revolutionary for it's bullet time and animations. Max Payne 2 for the physics and graphics. Control was the game to show off and market Ray tracing. And on top of that all these games have amazing storytelling, writing and actors. Well done to Remedy. I guess what I'm saying is the game is really good for what it is. I think modern society is more annoying than anything. This game has some of that in it where it's OCD like anything else. It's like everything is being designed by children of addicts or something. Even people. And even how people define and design addiction these days. The game itself is a bit cliche that way. I don't find the story as groundbreaking as people say. It's like the media they just keep regurgitating the same nonsense over and over. Still it's a well designed game and that I can appreciate.

Great review my friend. Your reviews are always indepth with good conclusive answer which is super helpful for anyone looking to pick up the game. Great stuff.
I really love Remedy’s meta commentary on the state of TV with these two games. Alan Wake, coming out at the near peak of zombie horror, plays like a particularly dark walking dead season, whereas Alan wake II, in the age of prestige TV, plays like an HBO drama (a la True detective, etc.)
I don't understand your comparison to walking dead?
Alan Wake felt like a love letter to David Lynch and Stephen King. The idyllic setting with darkness lurking below and the subjective, supernatural paranoia of the protagonist feeding the evil and literally in this case consuming the world around them .
@@error.delete4945 totally! I see it less in the content of Alan wakes story, but the gameplay, a lot more survival horror, emblematic of the walking dead, whereas the story has a lot of that King/Lynch love. That said, there’s a lot of King in the walking dead story, but I think that just might be true with any adaptation of Kurtzman. Could also just totally be a vibe thing, not sure.
