  • Multi-media artist Shane Hendren is a highly regarded jeweler, and he also explores his creativity through other channels, including film. Life--including fatherhood--postponed his pursuit of an advanced degree until the loss of his wife and his son inspired him to return to school and finish what he'd started. Borne from the chaos of 2020 and culminating in an exhibition for IAIA's first cohort from the MFA in Studio Arts program, Shane literally walks us through his film project at The Coe Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His series of films tells the story of forging human connection and resilience through generations. Join us as we get to know Shane in the final episode of his series.

I appreciate you sharing, I'm from Manassa, Colorado living in Denver, Colorado, some things I knew somethings I learned. This was just not just emotional but inspiring as well. We can only put the pieces back together and become better through sharing. I would love to be carrying on my family's traditions. It takes 100 years to master a craft. Thank you for not burying the secrets 💚💚💚

His story resonated with me. My nali, great grandmother, was captured & enslaved in Trinidad. She eventually escaped with two daughters & return to Dinétah. My nali spoke Navajo, Spanish, & several Native American dialects. I hear similar stories from Navajos especially in NM. My maternal side my grandmother & her brother had red hair and grey eyes. My cheii’s name is brother of man who speaks Spanish. I knew stories that early non-native settlers, traders, priest, raped young girls that is why some Navajos have naturally grey eyes, green eyes, red hair, or golden brown hair. This dark side of Navajo history is kept hidden.
My family DNA have European & Asian lineage but we do not claim it. The Peruvian thing is an interesting result. Peruvian DNA showed up in our family DNA, too. My thought is that DNA test cannot identity Native Americans by tribe so all Native Americans are considered Peruvian or Asian. They probably have not collected enough Native American DNAs. I considered myself 100% Navajo because that is all I know. I speak the language and appreciate our culture & religion.

Chief Manuelito was born in community in Utah (a Utah Navajo), near bears ears Utah, the same community that my grandfather is from. He was drawn into helping his Dine people - then eventually married and moved east of the reservation (navajo culture). I was born in Utah and also decendent of this community - I am 3rd generation military veteran and spend 6 years in special operations. A lot of dine people from Utah (Utah Navajos) did not participate in the long walk, they fought and were able to hide (almost starved) and avoided the Kit Carson/Indian scouts. This is probably why most of the Navajos in the northwest of reservation are very independent and have strong opinions and leadership qualities --- just like chief Manuelito.

Axheha! for your insights, yes some us have thoughts to Spaniards and catholic church abuses. In Dine teaching we are taught - Know who you are" so mother earth, stars, universe, animals, will KNOW YOU! That's why - learning your mother's lineage, paternal lineage, grandparents lineage - clanships is important.
