Shrimpy’s situation with his estate reminds me of Anton Chekhov’s most famous play, “The Cherry Orchard.” Though set in rural Russia in the 1890s, the same issues were at play. An aristocrat who didn’t modernize, her estate being sold off to pay debts and mortgages, family being ripped apart as the estate goes under. Makes me think the writers were thinking of “The Cherry Orchard” when they wrote Shrimpy’s and Rose’s storyline.

There are entire film-franchises that don't manage to do that across multiple movies! He was perhaps not a good husband, lord, or a manager, but he sure was a damned good father! And Rose blossomed because of that (pun definitely intended)!
This happened with a LOT of Noble Houses at the turn of the 20th century. It was practically a thinning because the cost of living was finally affecting the noble classes when the books were redone and shown that many of the noble classes were spending far more then they were earning managing the lands and the villages they were responsible for. It all came to bite them back when their titles were no longer able to buy them credit when commoners were beginning to make sense of the new world and how they could navigate it not in Service but business for themselves.
It's a shame that this episode is the Only time Rose's older brother and sister are ever mentioned. I'm presuming by Lord Flintshire's tone that James went off to war and sadly never returned. Anabelle is married and living her own life far, far, far away from her parents. (Her mother especially)
If there’s anywhere to be in a zombie apocalypse, Doneagle is the place. It’s a freaking arsenal. Just in the entrance hall, dozens of swords, pole arms, and shotguns, with more spread all over the house.
Well, this explains why Susan is the way Susan is. Susan is very anxious, driven, and exacting, and her husband is so passive, he's done nothing while their entire fortune drained away and now they have to sell everything they own and their home. Susan feels she must take control, both because her personality needs stability like oxygen and because she no longer trusts her husband or thinks he's capable. But she is so high anxiety and so resentful of his failures that it twists. She isn't getting the reissuances she needs and has latched on to Rose as a thing she must fix and save, so she obsessively worries and criticizes. Hugh views Susan's comments as her being mean and nasty by nature (not as the result of her anxiety coming out wrong), and thinks he's being loving and kind when he steps in to shield Rose and let her get away with things. But Susan views Hugh as a waste who's ruined them, and when he interferes like this, he isn't being good--he's ruining yet another thing Susan is trying to hold together with duct tape. Rose MUST get married, and to a suitable person, before their ruin is revealed, and Hugh letting her do stuff like wear slutty dresses and sneak off actively undermines that. A softer hand might be useful with Rose, but Hugh has ruined Susan's trust in him and his judgement so thoroughly with his own actions she would never be able to believe him again. They resemble the couple in Mrs. Doubtfire: one is all fun, and the other has to be the horrible stick in the mud and voice of reality, so the other one then tries to be even more fun, which then requires even more rule enforcing, and so on, until they are so far apart, there is no meeting in the middle anymore. I doubt Susan likes the person she feels she has to be when she's with Hugh, just as little as Hugh likes being criticized.
At first I thought the reason she was in such a foul mood was because her husband had lost their family home, but later on it seems she's always just been nasty.
Genuinely asking, is that dress really risque for the times? I think I've seen Mary and Edith wear more daring ones, especially Edith in that teal dress when she goes to meet Gregson.

There's that room again. Seen in so many British productions. No one seems to notice.
It's a shame that this episode is the Only time Rose's older brother and sister are ever mentioned. I'm presuming by Lord Flintshire's tone that James went off to war and sadly never returned. Anabelle is married and living her own life far, far, far away from her parents. (Her mother especially)
Shrimpie never mentions having to find a more distant relative as his heir, so it’s likely James is still alive.
If there’s anywhere to be in a zombie apocalypse, Doneagle is the place. It’s a freaking arsenal. Just in the entrance hall, dozens of swords, pole arms, and shotguns, with more spread all over the house.
of this impresses you, visit the Tower of London and/or Windsor Castle, the armoury walls
I’m getting Cinderella vibes from Rose’s outfit (alluding to Lily playing Cinderella haha)
"Yes, she's marvelous". ☺️
Mary being kind to Ana...
00:06 that is such a mum saying 😂 "that is final!!" Doesn't help my mum is called Susan too 😂😂
What reel is that? It sounds a lot like the American fiddle tune "Devil's dream".
It's a Scottish fiddle tune, De'il Amongst the Tailors :)
@@kylahislop6212 Thanks. I looked that song up and it's almost the same song.
Anna...I do love her heart and how smart, capable and resilient she is. Bates is wonderful also. I love the pairing. Never mind Rose.
Love Rose's dress
I hope to one day find a man that looks at me the way Bates looks at Anna :-)
I wish I had a big house like that in Scotland
What is the meaning of the phrase “a word you don’t often hear among the heather”? It must have a great story.
in and around duneagle there was lots of heather in the highlands, so she's saying 'slut' is not a word commonly used in duneagle
Seems like Roses mother has some serious baggage that she can't deal with
At first I thought the reason she was in such a foul mood was because her husband had lost their family home, but later on it seems she's always just been nasty.
Schlock Jocks You’re right. Even Violet commented that Susan has been “in rage since she was playing with dolls”.😣😖
what she has is called borderline personality disorder.
I never noticed this before... The beginning shot... Is that a dollhouse? Or some sort of 3D render? It looks so fake. Lol.
No it's a real place - Inverary Castle in Scotland the seat of the Dukes of Argyll
@@pedanticradiator Oh is it? I honestly had no idea. I learned something new. Lol thanks
Shrimpy is one of my favs
That Bates x Anna moment at the end
Her jealous Susamonster makes me crazy - it’s a wonder that Rose turned out as well as she did . Her father rocks though. :)
I saw Shrimpy in another movie the other night forgot what it was I think with ricky gervais and matthew crowley's mother penelope whoever
Genuinely asking, is that dress really risque for the times?
I think I've seen Mary and Edith wear more daring ones, especially Edith in that teal dress when she goes to meet Gregson.
But Edith's parents are more liberal in terms of fashion and modernising.
Shrimpy is Much Better Than Susan
oh, I wish to have a chance with Scotsman.
Good man to plainly tell his wife.

👉 For us "Bates'" fans, the show really put us through the ringer
as we had to endure their tough times apart. But in the end, they
were the most satisfying characters on the show! 💙🏰👗🧥
I believe that miserable people, want to crush happy people. Like the saying goes misery loves company. Lets face it Rose's mother Susan is very angry and miserable person. Rose is a very caring, and happy person.
Yeah, a person will not be that grumpy if they're happy.
But it makes you wonder what made Susan that miserable.
@@Furienna Her marriage is unhappy, her kids are growing up, and they have money troubles
@@glen7318 Yes, but I wonder if Susan wasn't neglected by her family as a child as well.
It is clear that even her aunt Violet doesn't have a high opinion of her and described her as a grumpy child.
Nobody:
Bates: "I love my wife."
BATES AND ANNA FOREVER
Lady Rose is so beautiful
YESSSSS
Susan be like: Everything I do and say is the correct and absolute. HOW DARE U DISOBEY ME! EVERYTHING MUST GO MY WAY!
the shot of the castle right at the beginning is fake right? like that looks like a miniature replica. it looks like i could crush it with my finger
No it’s a helicopter shot I think
Why does the entrance have this modern looking glass roof?
Find you a man that looks at you the way that Bates looks at Anna.
Maybe because they’re older and already “presented”
Which episode?
