@@miou-miou- I don't follow the 'trends' (as you can tell from my hair!) but I do get to the requests eventually. I suspect this request came in about a year ago!
@@Bob-kt4yz It is! But a lot of people won't even watch or listen due to them 'not liking' the genre. As with all art, music included, just because it's different doesn't make it 'bad', 'bad' is a subjective opinion. So for the person that asked 'Is this singing?', they have the answer!

I wasn't a huge fan of Tool until I saw them live...absolutely one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Ever. They are above and beyond talented as a unit.

That shaking and shuddering that Maynard does is so symbolic of withdrawal symptoms. As a former alcoholic, this hits home so painfully and true.

Thank you Fil for another great analysis. I have seen this video many times, but as usual you add so much to it. I am ashamed to say that I discovered TOOL only a couple of years ago. Watching this video from 93 I'm asking, where was I? How did I miss them? I now own all of their albums and listen to them very often. I am convinced they will go down as one of the greatest bands from any genre.

Tool is kick ass and so is this analysis. Fil you have a way of breaking stuff down so even some who are not musicians can understand it. that is a talent of its own. Great job on this one

Danny was (and still is) the drummer in my unit Pigmy Love Circus. I knew Maynard from Green Jello (not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin---I did several stints with them). When TOOL started out they only had the makings of Sober and Adam would come to Pigmy gigs and sit side stage and just watch me play. The Pigmys and TOOL rehearsed at Dan Carey's loft in Hollyrock and one day Adam timidly asked me how I got my tone? So I went to his 50 watt Marshall head and twisted the knobs on it and said "that's how". My secret
I have watched dozens of reactions and breakdowns of this Sober video. Have to say loved this one the best! Hope to see more Tool here.

This performance to me was the embodiment of the words coming out of his mouth. Harrowing, haunting, disturbing, and too close to home for many. His eyes speak volumes by themselves, his (lack of) posture, his hands, everything just comes together and screams addiction, withdrawal, and hopelessness.
I’ve seen him do this live 3 times but never like this. This was a moment in itself set apart from the rest.

As a 1980's metalhead teenager the 90's was an end of a musical style to a lot of us....Tool in 93 and Prong with their Cleansing album in 94 was really good.
You dissect and elucidate with the pace of a horse race announcer. You need to do a "day in my life" video --- where does this consistent high drive come from??!!!

Pushit from Salival album...look for the 1998 concert version or just listen to it from the Salival album since it's recorded live. Tool is the greatest of all time...hands down!

My favorite band of the last two decades (along with A Perfect Circle)
I agree that there was a real step change in music going from the 80s to the 90s. The music became internalised or went introverted. No Doubt had a mysterious Middle Eastern vibe in some of their songs, Nirvana went dark and grunge, Joan Osborne sang about religion, Maroon 5 went a monotone grey, Porcupine Tree went progressive metal and RHCP did their darker power-melodies. It could almost be described as the decade of anti-music. I guess it was all about letting deep emotions and anger out of the cave that had been buried by years of feel-good and melodic music from the 60s-80s.

I tried this last night in my flat at 2am this morning and my neighbours in flat underneath where banging on their ceiling in appreciation ? just goes to show energy and passion in vocals can beat years of to much vocal training ..great analysis again..See Corey Huevel ...great guitarist and vocalist..
I have to admit I never listened to Tool. But I just listened to RATM this morning and sent a message to my daughters about it. There was a comment for "Killing in the Name of..."
A guy said he is 90 years old and plays it in the nursing home where he is staying. The others hate it but it's his favorite song. There were hundreds of positive comments.
Honestly, "Sober" and "Killing in the Name of" have to be the LEAST interesting songs either of these bands have to offer. Give "The Grudge" or "Lateralus" a try for Tool, or "Know Your Enemy" or "Down Rodeo" for Rage, to get a feel for them. The guitarists from both bands grew up together.
Interesting review. I didn't think I could appreciate their music, but, I just learned that I can appreciate their technique, style, and, surprisingly, their aggression. Who would have thought. I watched the video again after the analysis and found that I looked at this song differently. Fil, you have a way of guiding and pointing what's going on, and, that amazes me. Thanks.

Tool have totally transformed themselves over the years. The "sound" is familiar but the mind warping tunnels of tranced out, extended musicianship are in a different cosmos to this performance.
This here is of course classic early 90s, but I wish that there was a professionally filmed gig to discuss from their more recent shows over the years. A song like Schism, or something huge from the last album. Either way- I loved this video. Fantastic analysis and thought evoking words.

They're really worth getting familiar with. Very deep discography and nobody out there sounds like them. A truly special band.
Life is raw, emotional. We are humans not robots. Vocal techniques when taught are a building block on which to create music. Music can be guttural.... another way to express ourselves, either vocally or instrumentally 🤘☮️

basic summary: Tool is super talented.
Is my favorite band, so my bias is strong, they no doubt earn their keep as musicians though, very thoughtful and well put together music on top of inordinate amounts of talents, Danny by himself makes the band, but add all the clever and creative licks and lyrics it all just is so cohesive and vibrant, dynamic, comes out like an incredibly well put together piece of music, and they do this for entire albums this level of detail and dedication to music itself.
You could spend forever dissecting all the nuance here, just in this one song, not to mention the other songs related to this one that compliment it , as their albums are like stories usually in some way , telling an overarching message.
I’m a huge Tool and Puscifer fan. They sure as hell have their haters though.

Sorry you can't tell 3/4 from 4/4 or what points and counterpoints are or how to build dynamic relationships between instruments or how to create extremely deep and introspective thought provoking lyrical content.
People that bash musicians while having no knowledge or talent are wasteful human beings not worthy of respect.

I asked Maynard about this when I met him, in classic Maynard fashion he looked at me like I was a fucking idiot and said he focused on one face in the crowd the entire time. Oh ok Maynard Damn!
I saw A Perfect Circle in concert, it was amazing, but Maynard is one odd quirky dude, he was blacked out the entire time all you could see was his outline.....bizarre...
Maynard doesn’t want to be t to he frontman. He wants to be a part of the band. Like salt in a recipe.

Fil, I'm a new subscriber from the US (fellow guitar player) I enjoy your takes on these bands, and the detail you manage to bring to light in each. As far as some of YOUR work, I really think you nailed the Dokken "in my dreams" cover. They are all good vids, but that one is one of my favorites because it was a favorite of mine growing up. Have you done any analysis on Candlebox, Seether, or the late Eddie Money (Mahoney)? I ask because I actually know these guys in person, and have my own wide range of opinions on all of them, and each is QUITE different.... Keep on rockin brother! Thanks

Paul D’Amour the bass player that NEEDS credit. He was a brilliant musician and songwriter, his tone was amazing.
Justin Chancellor took it up a few notches. Love his playing.

Yes,certainly it is "singing." Simply because the sound is not soothing does not mean it is not singing. This is not my genre (I like soothing) but these guys (Tool) are not trying to sooth the beast inside us all, they want to make us angry. I can't see myself seeking out the sound of "Tool" but yes,it is singing. Thanks Fil.
Now i want to hear what you think of 'Reflection'. One of the few songs by them that aren't angry/"let out the beast-y".
It's part of a trilogy of songs, but it's also quite good by itself (not as good as the whole thing ofc).

I never was a big fan of Tool. I did watch the music video of this song and it was so weird but interesting. After that, I watched this video and see what he was doing from the music video. The creature in the music video moved the way he does here.

Maynard has a unique approach, and the loud instruments may make it harder to hear what he is doing,
but he holds notes, and he does it well.
I am not a fan of this band, but I do like some of their material, particularly "Sober".

Never been a huge Tool fan..really dig some other bands in the genre though... interesting offering on the channel..lol..I like that you're willing to go to other places..you'd be surprised where you can find some things...👍

Have you Sir, watched the "drum cam" filmed performance of "Pneuma"? 12 minutes of Danny Carey weaving and conducting his percussive magic. The rest of the band are not really as loud in the mixx as all eyes and ears are intentionally set on Danny. But it is a wonderful thing to watch and highly recommended!
