if you’re going to use the truck to off road, get the short bed. if you’re just going to drive around the city, get the long bed. and if you find it “tricky” trying to drive a long bed, don’t get a truck at all. figure it out.

A 5.5ft bed would be ideal in the tacoma, tbh.

Jon Lee long bed access cab auto is the best for off roading. Got my shift kit and 5.29 gears 6 inch lift and 35 mt tires. It does well in snow and mun and trails. Perfect truck its a 4cylinder and those 5.29 really wake this truck up. Along with exhaust and air intake making 10hp more just to give it a lil boostie. Maybe i will put on supercharger next. 5k bucks but i will get 200hp 200ft lbs to the wheels.

Even a 6 foot bed is short. My 1980 SR5 Toyota Truck Long Bed had a 7 foot 2 inch bed. Took it and a center console boat to the Florida Keys many times and slept in the back with a topper on. It made for a great short term camper. Please bring back the 2 person cab and a 7 foot + pickup bed.

    • @davidcox2197

I agree with Mark, even the 6.1 ft version is a bit short for camping in the bed, all the first gen longbeds were 7 ft, but narrow. Add a 180 leer shell and it offsets the limo looks with the over cab hi shell.

  • @jeffbutler6729

Also, don’t forget that you can get a long bed with the access can version rather than having to go with the club cabs. With that combo, you’ll have the advantages you mentioned in the short bed, but with a more versatile bed to haul with. Since I don’t carry people, but rather gear, I’m leaning towards the access cab, long bed version of this truck.

A friend of mine and I enjoy going 4 wheeling, fishing , hiking and camping.
He also has a 23 TRD double cab with the long bed.
I carry all of the gear and he has a new Aluminum bed topper with a tent on top.
So he sleeps in the tent and I sleep in the bed of his truck.
He has the sliding drawers in the bed of his trunk so my Queen size air mattress stays on top of that.
We have another friend who goes with us occasionally, but his TRD has a 5’ bed so he has to sleep next to me in his sleeping bag.

Because of its longer wheelbase the long bed will drive better on the road, soak up bumps better, and tow better. The short bed will be better off road.

I have a DCSB Automatic. If anyone is thinking of getting this truck, save yourself some time and go ACLB Manual (if you drive stick) or at least DCLB. I don't have quite as many complaints as most people with the automatic transmission, even with my 4 cylinder, I just prefer a manual but couldn't find one and was too lazy to order one. There are PLENTY of vehicles longer than the long wheel base version of this truck so don't let that deter you. Also, its a truck. Who cares what parking in the city is like. I need to haul stuff, not pick up the girls from Walmart and parallel park downtown. I'd rather have the main function of the truck be prominent. Most of the time whenever I lug things around in the back, or help a friend move furniture, I find there just isn't enough room in the 5-foot bed. Also, if you're into shells, they just look better on the long bed. So, moral here is: don't make the same mistake as me. Don't settle for a short bed.
    TL;DR
the short bed is just too short

I use my truck to haul stuff all the time though. Also I think people like the look of the shortbed better just because there are so much more of them on the road so when you see a long bed the proportions aren’t what you’re used to.

I noticed the shortbed was real hoppy Offroad. I feel like the longer wheelbase helps keep the truck more planted and it tends to throw you around a bit less.

  • @joe2479
    @joe2479 3 года назад +5

I believe the long bed provides a much better on-road ride, particularly on the highway and poorly maintained city streets. The long bed has a 120" wheelbase, 12" longer than the short bed. This provides much greater dynamic stability and a smoother more settled ride on the highway. Just as the short bed has advantages off-road, the long bed is far superior on-road.

Try hauling a whole sheet of plywood or other really long boards or anything for decent sized home repair projects.....
I am Well over 60 and a grandma, but a 5 foot bed seems like a joke, to getting any real work done, (unless your just an old lady wanting to drive around town, looking pretty cool while going out to lunch!)....
.....With a short bed try even moving more than a few 24 x 18 inch totes for a flea market or helping a friend move, and loading mulch in the big bags for even a regular size yard, that 2nd trip back to Home Depot is a pain!!!...or even going to the dump, save time and make 1 trip!... of course if your off road needs are the reason you like it, I cannot judge that, but,to me the short bed just Looks stubby and and out of proportion, and is just a real insult to all the other “grown up” trucks out there🤔😂!
(No offense intended, I just have this argument every day with s neighbor who loves his 5” bed !)

Keep in mind the long box on this at 6’ is still considered a short box on just about anything else. I feel like the SB is for someone who doesn’t actually need a truck in most cases and would be better off with a 4 runner. The LB is still small enough that even being slightly longer shouldn’t be an issue to park. If you want the SB for its off road capabilities but aren’t comfortable driving the LB you should probably stay off the trails.

The proportions of a short bed make the truck look weird. @@steve8803 😂... it’s possible, but then Toyota would be risking their reliability and the trust that comes with it. Just use the bed extender or fabricate something yourself to lengthen the bed, but Toyota would have liability issues and many logistics and hurdles to cross which would diminish the returns. I potentially see that being a $2,500 + option and if you utilize it enough for it to be worth $2,500, then you probably need a longer bed. This would only benefit you if you had to crawl over rocky terrain on the way to a worksite and then transport long materials on a smooth terrain to another site and then shorten the bed/wheelbase to navigate your way back home over the somewhat rocky and unforgiving terrain. This is a silly idea. 😂

The Canyon/Colorado have 1,500 Lb. payload beds in either bed. I have a Cargo business and that extra 400 Lbs. is pretty big difference ($$$) i.e., I wish Toyota would increase the capability to at least 1,500 Lbs. etc.. Good Video!

Okay first of all that short bed should be a bit longer but still a bit less than the long bed. Secondly if you're going to be using a truck to move things around I want the truck to be lower. I never understood why everyone wants a freaking ladder to get on the truck. Man I missed the older smaller trucks that are lower that any normal person can get in and out without a ladder. I know I'm being extreme with the ladder part you know what I mean. I wished they made the smaller trucks with the double cab. I guess Honda is the only one sort of doing that now. Lifting larger items to a high truck is no fun. Oh yeah and not everyone wants to go off roading.

Easiest way to tell a long bed from a short bed from a distance is there is no space between the fender flare and the cab in the short bed, and also the long bed wheel well is more centered on the side of the bed, you have more room in the cab with the short bed than the long bed tacoma ,both are the same length except for the bed and cab

Another way of putting it is if you need a truck get the longbed. The shortbed has less room than the 4 runner with the seats down, and if you need the maneuverability or are doing a lot of tight city driving the 4 runner is much better than any tacoma.
I really wish Tacoma had a longbed version of the TRD pro, as well as manual options and other options as well that are offered on the shortbed. When it comes to usability the shortbed is really not enough.

Thanks for the Tacoma videos, Mike! I'm looking into a new truck and the Taco has been at the top of the list. Obviously, some of the few complaints about the Taco has been about the automatic transmission not complementing the 3.5 as well as it should and it sounds like people who drive the manual have no issues at all. My wife wants me to get a DC and I want the long bed so manual with DCLB is out of the question which seems crazy to me that they don't make it in that configuration. You would think that the extra length and weight with DCLB would make it a no-brainer for a manual transmission. They do make the TRD Sport model in long bed access cab with a manual but that is it for long beds. Makes my decision that much harder... Access Cab with manual or Double Cab with automatic.

    • @DrivenCompanion
      @DrivenCompanion  5 лет назад +3

Yes, I was dissapointed that wasn't an option for me. I decided the long bed was more of a priority than the manual but sometimes I wish I would have seen otherwise as the auto can be frustrating (and a manual is more fun!)

I wanted a long bed, but ended up with a short bed due to limited availability. I thought I would miss the extra foot.
But here's the practical reality: It tows 6400#. If the 5' bed won't do the job, then use a trailer. Take the couch, the washer, the drier, and the fridge in one trip, with a lower deck and a ramp for loading.
The shortbed leaves you with better angles on an easier to park and maneuver truck for the 97% of the time you are not actually hauling something that won't fit in the 5' bed. If you have aesthetic reasons for your choice - or are frequently hauling heavy/large loads - then I have no idea why you are shopping for a Tacoma.
