I took the Tamron 70-180 2.8 for Sony E Mount and the Sony 70-200 2.8 G Master out for a spin to get some sample images. Due to the current circumstances, I was only able to capture a few running photos with a dog as well as some portraits. Normally I would have probably taken photos of a baseball game or some sort of sport, but this is the best I could do right now.
With that said, I think I got exactly what I needed to get to do a comparison, especially knowing the price difference.

The Tamron may in fact be one of the first examples where a Mirrorless camera setup finally sticks to its laurels of being lighter and smaller than equal DSLR setup. The fact that this doesn't require a tripod collar mount may be a first for a 2.8 in this range. Bravo Tamron, and I'm waiting for mine to finally arrive from Amazon.

Tamron image quality honestly looks superb, in my experience with the G-master, it's rather soft at 200mm when you aren't within its sweet spot focus range. Even in these photos, the Tamron looks a bit better to me. Let's hope for a masterclass v2 for the G-master, hopefully of the same quality as the 135 1.8!

I’m a sports shooter. I sold my Sony GM, and have this tamron on preorder. The 70-200 is never my “primary”, and I am usually shooting it one-handed on my second body (primary is on a monopod held with my other hand). It’s light weight will be welcomed. (I use only primes for indoor sports, btw.)

It seems like everyone compares the 2.8 Sony vs the 2.8 Tamron because they're both 2.8 lenses. Personally, I find the comparison between the Sony f4 and the Tamron 2.8 more interesting, because that's actually in the same scope of money.

After watching your video, if I ignore the obvious differences, two things stick out. One, is confidence in your gear to get the image you want. A back focusing lens does not inspire confidence even if it occurs “occasionally.” The second thing is a lens is only of use if you carry it with you. If it’s too heavy or large to be with you, then it’s not much use. So with those two things in mind, the Tamron is the better choice for me.

From the technical point of view the AF system of a mirror less camera is a 'closed loop' system and the AF sensor is 'part' of the camera sensor. That means the the light path for measuring the the sharpness (quite complex camera related algorithms) and the light path for capturing the image is identical. In DSLRs the measurement of the sharpness has been done using phase detection arrays and the mirror was part of this light path … so in this case we do have two different light paths. And if these haven't been calibrated properly you ended up with back/front focus issues. Some adapters (e.g. LA-EA2) have build in phase detection arrays and as a consequence the AF system is 'using' a different light path again with the possibility of back/front focus issues. This is the reason why some cameras are offering build in calibration systems for lenses that need the phase detection arrays of the adapter.
With native e-mount lenses it is simply not possible to end up with a classic back/front focus issue. But of course the AF system can still fail to work as expected. But these failures are not related to the lens. Obviously the speed of the AF system in the lens is influencing the AF regulation loop error when shooting moving objects but on most modern lenses the speed of the AF system is not really the limiting factor (shutter speed is far more critical in most cases). The rest of problems are related to the algorithms that are used within the camera. Quantifying the sharpness is quite complex (in terms of the algorithms) and a higher f-stops the system/algorithms has to rely on the contrast only which is normally going hand in hand with a higher failure rate. Furthermore all algorithms that are quantifying the sharpness (and the resulting value is used to control the lens AF motors in a closed loop regulation system) need a specific minimum area (or minimum number of pixels) in order to end up with a quantifier for the sharpness of this area. If this area contains sever differences in depth you end up with a high probability of a missed focus because many algorithms are using a kind of 'optimizing the average sharpness within the area' approach. Modern algorithms are trying to specify the AF calculation area more 'precisely' by using pattern recognition algorithms (e.g. eye auto-focus) with the hope the AF control loop is using the eye only to calculate the control values for the AF motors. But e.g. wide open the eyelashes are definitely on a different focus level compared to the eye itself (we all know that). So if the area that is used by the camera to calculate the sharpness quantifier contains the eye AND the eyelashes it depends very much the area ratios, contrast, viewing angles, reflections in the eye, …. if the result is reflecting your expectations (and if your expectations are matching the 'priorities' of the algorithms … e.g. sometimes it's looking better if the focus is on the eyelashes).
In other words the AF system of an A7R4 is highly complex and mail fail from time to time. But for sure no native e-mount lens can show any systemic front/back focus issue. This is simply not possible (as in any other mirror less camera with native lenses). But the complex software algorithms that are the main part of all modern AF systems can fail … and believe me that there is still a lot of room for improvement (processor speed and related algorithms) …. and before you are asking … I am an electronic engineer in the medical business … so I am NOT developing cameras ;-) … but I know more than I want about sensor based regulation loops , pattern recognition … ;-) … so I am quite sure that a Sony developer would sign my 'theories' :-) ….
and before I forget … I LOVE the world of photography … and Jared is a hero of this world ;-)

However, I do appreciate the weather sealing on the GM and the ability to mount a mono-pod on the tripod collar. the camera measures the scene and tells the lens where to go to be in focus
the lens then interprets this and moves the elements - if the intepretation or the elements are off then yes you can get missed focus.
What Mirrorless takes out of the equation is the camera step - where a DSLR AF system can also be "off" with its measurements

I bought the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 and in the future will get the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 mainly due to the size and weight, I am not so worried about loosing 20mm. If you want to get equivalent lenses for Nikon or Canon you have to buy OEM and pay so much more so big advantage to Sony (till Sigma and Tamron will get their lenses to work on the Z mount and RF mount).

He was probably using wide focus area too instead of clicking on Bernie. He didn't even switch face detection to animals when he shot his neighbor and dog, that's why some of the images were out of focus, the camera will then just snap to the closest point or largest moving point, be it the nose of the dog or it's body. You can have all of this equipment, but it doesn't make you a good photographer ;)

Thank you for this review Jared. I downloaded the samples, saw you review in 4k , to my eyes, the Tamron has better image quality overall, and this review helped me make up my mind on this, I cant justify de cost difference just for the extra 20mm reach, and the extra money for the GM, plus the better look of the shots with the Tamron overall, so Tamron it is...

I am hoping to see a review of the Tamron 70-180 against the Sony 70-200 f4 lens. I think that a lot of people who own the f4 are wondering if it is worth it to buy the Tamron , the trade off being the lack of OSS and no tripod collar or custom switches for getting f2.8 . Unfortunately the size of the two lenses seem to be almost the same and the price point is not so far off from each other so now definite win there for the Tamron.
I would never buy the GM lens as it is more weight than I want to carry.

9:50 the vertical compression (head elongation) difference between the two is night and day, I didn’t think that was affected so significantly between 180mm and 200mm (that’s the kind of difference I’d expect between 40mm and 60mm). What’s the deal?!

Sony 70-200 f4 vs. Tamron 75-180? OSS and better build quality vs cheaper and an extra stop... I’m still undecided for portraits. If I’m upping the shutter speed to counteract the lack of OSS, is it worth it?

Should have been a comparison between Tamron and Sony 70-200 f4.0 which for $200 more is the way better value. At about the same weight and size, it has image stabilization, internal zooming, customizable buttons, weather sealing, collar, and excellent image quality. And for this kind of a zoom f4 is just fine.

They are a better value, I can get 18 months 0% financing at my store with them, and they have a 6 year warranty which doesn’t normally mean much but SIX years is a long time for a warranty. Sakari Jokinen. Someone during a video dropped the camera and lens off the tripod down a slope onto some rocks and the neck of the lens snapped. The lens mount stayed fixed in the camera so the camera wasn’t damaged. Hard to say if it should have survived the drop or not but the leverage on the lens neck would have been significant with a fairly long heavy lens.

Reasons I’ve pre-ordered the tamron and wouldn’t ever get the GM:
    1. Price
    2. I own the other two tamrons and love them, so was really keen to get the third.
    3. Weight.
    4. Size
With the majority of those reasons, I’m far far more likely to take the tamron out with me, whereas the size and weight of that GM would simply be too off-putting. The lack of 20mm at the long end really doesn’t bother me as it’s not significant and if I need extra reach, I’m most likely shooting football (soccer!) in which case I’ll probably use my a6600 for extra reach.

Just FYI at 12:18 don't think it was a lens issue. Left eye was probably out of focus on the Sony image because her face is turned at an angle. Would have required a higher Depth of Field. Her face is more straight on when you shot with the Tamron.

Man, Tamron plays it beautifully! They release a "preatty much there as a 70-200" lens, but much smaller and cheaper. So now you have the option of buying the Tamron for tele versatility and a Prime lens for Portrait brilliance. Or you can get the Sony 70-200 and not switch lenses. You have the privilege of needing to be a well informed photographer for the best results. Thank you, Jared for this review. I'm not a Sony shooter, but still appreciated this review.

On the subject of extra reach SONY WHERE IS YOUR 300 F/2.8 or 200 F/2 with a 1.4x converter. The 400 and 600 primes are gorgeous but 200 - 400 is massive step with no fast glass.

Great video. I have an RIV and my longest lens is the Sigma 100-400 FE mount. I also have the Sony 135GM, Sony 90mm macro, Sony 55mm ZA, Sony 24-105 and 16-35GM. I intend doing some travel in Alaska and wanted a longer than 400mm reach, for wildlife shots, and am thinking of getting the 200-600 Sony, which then puts into question the 100-400 Sigma, so was thinking a better fit might be the 70-180 Tamron and either hanging onto the 135, or maybe selling it if the Tamron is going to do a similar job, albeit zoon/vs prime, 2.8/vs 1.8. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Another valid comparison regarding price and weight might be a comparison between the Tamron 70-180mm and the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS... I have opted to keep my copy of the Sony because: 1. I already have it and it would cost me an extra couple hundred bucks to make the switch and 2. the Canon lens has OSS which is nice with a long focal length lens. A one stop gain would not be worth the switch for me. However, if Tamron had brought out a teleconverter for the 70-180mm, I would make the switch.
Note: I have not noticed any corner softness problems with the Canon f/4 G OSS lens...

I think Tamron need commending, lots of people want quality glass and output but don't feel comfortable splashing out on the GM lenses. In all honesty there's hardly any difference in the overall images. Like you Jared, I do think Tamron should have gone longer at let the wider end drift to 90/100.
