This song brings up the beautiful and meaningful emotional experiences I had as a child reading Holes. Holes is one of the best books ever written, inspirational.

I had a teacher in year 5 and we watched the movie (twice) and read the book. the next year when she was meant to be my teacher, she left. I got moved to another class and we had to read it again and watch the movie again. still love it.

Coming back all these years later, and this song is still unironically a bop. The Holes movie was one of the very few loyal adaptations, and it spoiled me forever because I still hope adaptations of books will stick closely to the plot.
Didn’t the author of Holes write the screenplay? Which explains why the film is so perfect!!
I’m super excited but also nervous for the new Percy Jackson series coming to Disney+, cause the movies were terrible but at least this time the author is super involved, so fingers crossed we get something similar!

first time watching the movie, have read the book more than 10 years ago. Didn't regret the watch at all
Just watched this movie this morning. I was playing it for my 6 year old son. He loved it! I grew up on these old Disney movies. This was truly a great movie!
This song actually makes me cry sometimes.
Its only as an adult that I finally understand this poem and song:
The Woodpecker and The Wolf want the same thing- for the bark to be "as soft as the skies". The Woodpecker wants the bark soft so it can have the food/shelter inside easier and The Wolf wants to climb the tree to eat The Woodpecker.
But The Wolf is also lonely, so eating The Woodpecker only satiates half of its hunger.
They both want what makes their life easier, but still leaves them miserable.
I always thought it was a symbolism of even if we’re enemies were all we got, sort of like Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles. Both, the Priest and Eleanor, coexisted together, but it’s the fact they never met or talked that lead them to be lonely, within the same place.. I don’t know if i’m explaining well, i have a hard time explaining my thoughts, but i made a connection a while ago when i heard eleanor rigby after this lol
I always thought it was that the Woodpecker symbolized relationship anx the wolf the people. We both want a soft cushy relationship but seizing it only makes one of us happy due to force but instead starving together they may die but die together happily
becuase now we are living it... its all part of the plan

Love this song soo f'ing much its takes me back to a time where life was soo much simpler..... love it. and his voice chills me.
You know, this might be one of the best songs put out in the last 20 or so years. The symbolism is amazing.
Take the Chorus for example.
"If only if only, the woodpecker sighs.
The bark on the tree was as soft as the sky."
For those who don't understand these two, the woodpecker is a weak animal, unable to freely break the bark, and thereby unable to sustain itself easily. But it is free.
"As the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely.
It howls to the moon, if only, if only."
The wolf is a powerful animal, It is feared, and people avoid it.
Thereby it is lonely.
The woodpecker represents those who are poor,
Yet who don' t have society constantly watching them. Expecting them to be perfect.
The wolf represents the powerful.
Expected to be perfect, to be powerful at all times.
Ooooor, it could just be a woodpecker and a wolf.... (and if the wolf is so powerful, why is he hungry?)

And it will get better, just hang in their, man. As someone who battled depression for 4 years I can assure you it does get better. There were some mornings where I woke up and just wished I had died in my sleep and did not see the use in getting up for the day. But now things are much better and I really am enjoying my life. I would always search this video back in middle school 2009-2013. Now I’ve done graduated school and I still remember those times because of this song. I read the book and watched the movie about 100 times. Good times, simple time at that. Anyone else listening in 2020?

The lead singer is Joseph Sumner, son of Sting.
I was 2 when the book was put out, read it once I could, loved it. I was 7 when the movie came out, watched, it loved it. Love the story line, the soundtrack, the actors all were great. Honestly, one of my favorite movies. I'm sad it was never as popular or well known as it deserves. Beautiful and interesting song. Love it and happy to sing along and watch the storyline play out in my head.

Couldn't you see if this werw a musical, this song becoming a great duet between Elya and Stanley?
Elya takes the first half of the first verse to apologize for the curse
Stanley takes the second hald because he's angry at him.
Elya sings the first chorus.
Then Stanley takes the first half of the second verse sarcastically about the beautiful wife and accusing him of letting his family suffer.
Then Elya takes the next half to remind Stanley that he will get through this and of his friends who won't let Stanley down like Elya did to Madame Zeroni.
Stanley takes the second chorus.
Then together they sing the Bridge about how they are fighting their history. Then sing the chorus together as if Stanley has forgiven Elya and Elya has forgiven himself.

This song is definitely one of the most inspirational, and beautiful songs I know. I own the holes book myself. I got it in 2021 before the 6 weeks holiday in year 9 because we were learning about it. We watched the movie and I loved it so I got the book. The fandom may be slightly dead but for some reason fandoms that are slightly dead unfortunately usually seem to be about something amazing like this movie + book.
