    I honestly like both classic and retail when it comes to leveling. I like how Classic has a slower pace and requires more thought while retail allows you to be completely relaxed and level dynamically in the zones. Also there is no pressure in retail to 'tag' mobs like there is in classic and bosses dont have 15 minute spawn times, so there is no competition between yourself and other members of your faction when questing in retail like there is in classic. They both have their pros and cons and I believe that they each fit a space for a certain type of character.

      retail is so easy I quit pretty fast because how utterly mundane it is, then finding a competent and not egotistical group to play with just isn't worth the new armor pieces

    • @Watashi_wa_robottodesu
      @Watashi_wa_robottodesu Год назад +4

      Yes because eating after every fight isn't mundane, or having to walk for over 8+ hours until you get a mount. In retail i don't think i've ever met anyone who wasn't competent in what we were doing, i get it a lot in vanilla though. Fuck tons of wipes. You generally don't get "egotistical groups" unless you're raiding, because gear is supposed to go to certain people first. Sure retail isn't fun 100% of the time but nor is vanilla. It kept me a little longer because i don't feel like im playing a walking simulator

    At the 10 minute comparison you mention in live that you don't feel challenged and that you haven't faced any aggressive mobs. I played on the stress test yesterday. I can say at the 10 minute mark in either of the characters I played (human Paladin until the server got shut down by Omar, and then a Tauren Shaman), I never felt like I was in danger either, and I never once saw a red mob in those first 10 minutes as a Paladin. I can't judge the time because my Tauren was competing for tags with what seemed like the entire stress test, but I even faced off with a level 5 aggressive boar at level 2 during the Rite of Strength quest. No sense of danger. (Later on the difficulty will be more noticeable, yeah, but not at that level.)
    The difference, in the first 10 minutes, is pacing. Things die slower, so you get more of a sense that you are fighting things rather than just wandering around slaughtering the local wildlife. It's not that it is more challenging, just more satisfying.
    Now, if we could only mix satisfying gameplay of Classic with the satisfying visuals of BfA...

    • @brianfredborg1505
      @brianfredborg1505 5 лет назад +4

      I'm not in the classic beta/stress test/whatever they call it, so I can't say anything about the current state of classic - but being a vanilla player I very clearly remember what he's talking about with regards to "being in danger". Walking around in areas (not at launch though where the starting areas were super crowded) with red mobs I had a feeling of being just slightly more powerful than e.g. the trolls in the Dwarf starting area, and if I accidentally pulled 2 or 3 I would a) die or b) have to reset them and try again. As compared to retail, you just charge in to everything and face roll your way through it. Not fun.
      I'm super hyped about classic, and I really, really hope Blizzard will decide to keep the classic game alive with updates/expansions that maintain the same level of gameplay, meaning hard work and equal rewards - and not having money/mounts/epics/legendaries/etc - thrown in your face without doing anything, while keeping the maximum level at 60 forever. Not sure if that's even possible lol :P
      I really like your idea of mixing the gameplay of classic with the visuals of BfA - that would be absolutely amazing!

    • @curiousfishie
      @curiousfishie 5 лет назад +1

      I hope for everyone that Blizzard decides to put in the option of switching between visuals in the video options. This way people can play whichever way they want or switch it up when they feel like it. Classic is indeed running on newer tech so adding this vanity visual shouldn't be an issue.

    Classic is designed to be "cool RPG-like leveling" with a bit of stuff at max level, while BFA is 15-yr old game, that came to conclusion that its max level content is all that matters.

  • @user-fw5uh5ne3o
    @user-fw5uh5ne3o 5 лет назад +5

    For me the eye opening experience was leveling a character without heirlooms in BfA. I always thought that the reason why the leveling was so easy and boring was because I had this awesome heirloom gear on me with all the enchants, but when I started to level without them from level 1 I realized that is not the case at all. The heirlooms aren't that much better, they make the leveling faster because of the extra EXP, but kill time didn't feel like much different. I still just wrecked through everything without any thinking and whats more interesting was that after I got through the first 6 levels I started to get green quest rewards that were just amazingly powerful. Back in the day +1 strength was cool, now by level 8 you are getting weapons with over 10 strength (and they can even titanforge to rare or epic quality and have even more stats on them)
    I haven't been able to participate in Classic Beta, but I've played some TBC private server and even though they have their EXP rates messed up the game still feels a lot slower. Leveling up feels good and not because I get a talent every level, like some people claim since they really dont do much, but because it feels like I earned it. It feels like I'm working towards something meaningful. Also the world feels threatening again. I can't just run straight line between quests, I either have to carefully pull mobs one by one or go around their camp so I don't get creamed.

  • @gothicspoon

    On the one hand, I agree that the levelling system needed a rework. If it kept getting exponentially longer to reach max lvl at the same pace it used to, newcomers wouldn't even bother trying to get to 120.
    On the other hand, it's still too easy.
    They need to rework all Cata zones, keep the current system which allows for much more choice when it comes to levelling zones, and spice up the difficulty by a bunch.
    This way people would still get to level in zones they are more attracted to, have some challenge while doing so, and have a world that's a bit more coherent (it's a real clusterfuck after all these expacs).
    Maybe also XP gain in any zone at any level, so that expacs don't become irrelevant?
    Blizz clearly has been meaning to make levelling relevant again, they just need to keep working on it

      Retail is basically a whole entirely different game for an entirely different audience at this point. With classic launching, it also wouldn't make any sense to rework retain in that way. Yeah, retail leveling, I have leveled just in the last 2 months, like 10 to 15 characters. I would say at least 5 in remix, which you can honestly get to 70 in a day of playing, especially if you have already leveled one character already. Then I leveled on retail and take me like 3 days a character and I have 4 at 60 just bought dragonflight expansion with the special will be buying war within later just before release and probably when my time expires in August and three months as well. I'm definitely having a good time still looking for a good guild, though, because I have always enjoyed the end game more than leveling. But i have leveled many characters, and how fast I level them some people shake there head at. For me, it was because I leveled so many. I just knew how to do it efficiently. Now everything is scaled in Chromie time, so it's actually easier to level. So for new players, I would say start with retail. If you are an old school player, then classic may be the way to go. Woe I just noticed this was made 4 years ago now its even easier in retail then it was back then.

    I just wanna mention the not getting a bag in Classic early on is like only part true.. Cause any mob can drop a bag. I know when I was on the stress test I got one from a kobald at level 2. So it's not impossible and if you find chests they also have a chance to drop one. This all can be done by maybe just grinding a full level and heading to your next questing zone at 6 or a bit of exp before 6.

Mainly, because the game has undergone multiple stat squishes, in order for health values to scale linearly instead of exponentially, they had to increase the base health of lower levels. This is not Blizzard trying to make the game "too easy" at lower levels, it simply is a side-effect of needing to squish the system as the game gets older and older
    When talking about starting areas, you should really make sure to mention the fact that a new player (as in brand new with zero history in any MMOs) should not feel like they are not progressing or are barely able to perform even basic tasks. You don't suck and yet had issues with a Boar. We've all died in Classic WoW in the early levels at least once. Some might say dying is good for a new player as it gives them a sense of urgency, but player retention is obviously any MMOs top priority and ensuring an easy start is a good way to get them into the game. As an example, Dark Souls doesn't make you fight a boss until very far into the game (the first one is entirely optional and you are expected to skip it). The starter enemies only have one attack and suffer tremendous flinching from your attacks. You can complete the entire Asylum area just mashing attack without ever really having to use the Dodge skill. This is akin to Retail. In Classic, on the other hand, you are dropped off in Blighttown with no instructions. Can someone eventually complete Blighttown? Sure. Will the genera populace have fun and keep playing? Certainly not.
    I understand you are a die-hard Classic fan, but when doing these sorts of videos you really should set your bias aside and explain to your listeners why things are so different. Not just say "wow BfA sucks you have no fear of death." (verbatim)

      The dark souls asylum demon is not optional, only the first encounter is optional, you have to kill the boss in order to escape from the asylum and you'd need to either block or dodge attacks to complete the asylum, dark souls is not a good comparison for wow classic/wow bfa in my opinion.

      As a BFA player trying out a private server vanilla lately, I really agree with you. I've experienced both the incredibly fun, rewarding and social aspects of vanilla - and the frustrations. Although...
      When classic comes out, players will find themselves searching for help/guidance on the internet All The Time about the smallest things in order to progress. You really need to become an expert to reach the Vanilla endgame and you most likely need friends to help you. It's very, very time consuming and feels out of proportion to what you get in return. Some people love this type of gaming ofc! But I would love if there was a middleground between retail & classic.

      Demon Souls literally has a Boss called a Dragon God, one hit KO you in a unskippable cut scene, if you get past the "tutorial boss"
      you are pretty much meant to die to.
      Dark Souls early game mobs can still 3-4 shot you. They have auto attacks, flailing and come in packs.
      So, dunno why you're making those comparisons - they're completely wrong - And blighttown is only hard if you go the stupid way,
      which is not taking the backpassage.
      Also - outside of having an actual brain damage - i fail to see what your concept of "Suck" would mean here.
      You have 1 button. You seem able to comprehend how to formulate sentances. How many buttons did you press
      to write that? I'd wager "more than 1" - So get the fuck out with this stupid "i am fucking retarded" argument - cause
      the only thing that makes you that - is your actual argument.
      As for BFA vs. Classic - Classic rewards you for knowing interactions and learning/having a sense of urgency.
      BFA does not. BFA is just a question of time - Classic actually makes you think, in some capacity.

I really wish they'd just have a free skip to 120 so those fucks who hate levelling can't have a say in it being in the pathetic state it is. vanilla was definitely more immersive bc it was harder to level, but an even more important part of that was that it forced you to socialize with other players to do quests.

    While I agree with most of the sentiment about Classic, I'd like to address a few points: the fact that many mobs in the starter area are yellow is an indication that Blizzard wanted to make it easier to get into the game at the start (it's the tutorial area still). Having more skills at that time than in Classic could feel overwhelming to new players when mobs would also attack you. In Classic you're mostly autoattacking, so no need to keep track of skills here. Just don't overpull, seems to be the tutorial lesson in Classic. I really would like to see some higher level comparisons (lv.50-60). Even though retail WoW is a cakewalk with little to no danger, it does have increasing difficulty.
    Another small thing: quests feeling too epic... I'm not sure but I don't think Classic had too epic quests in their later stage. Personally I feel like if they could get the balancing right in retail (making it way more difficult), then it would be the superior experience questwise, imho.

      Having to sell mats to afford buying new skills is more engaging.
      Needing to kill mobs outside of quests in order to level up is more engaging.
      Going out of the starting area too soon and getting destroyed by higher level mobs is more engaging.

    Great comparison. I think the heirloom comparison is a good idea and probably try human paladin or night elf hunter (two of blizzard's first noob friendly classes in design- 1 the pet class and auto attack safety net class, they have changed so much) and also comparing that to 30 minutes of a fresh level 110 starting bfa because we can imagine some new players to wow or returning players using that 110 boost and trying to get straight into current and least neglected content
    I hope they fix leveling in the old world. They need to focus on new player experience again and making leveling an actual fun and lengthy part of the game. They should make big risks to do this. My hope of what they fix is: 1. Leveling 2. itemization, stats and loot/rewards. 3. Community. 4. Classes. 5. Immersion in the world. I'm optimistic about this as of the recent discussion by ion

    The end results were close to same level, was there more quest story to follow that took longer on retail? For how quick you kill I’d think you’d end with double the level.

    I felt once Mist came out everything became Faster. lvling became faster, able to get gold faster. more or less, they wanted the people to lvl up fast and play the end stuff as fast as possible.
    While before Mist, IE wow, Burning, wrath and Cat was slow pace, You really had to Grind for gold and items.
    Cat was like the balance point of it all, was slightly better with getting gold little bit sooner but still a grind.
    I think they should have Servers for like Classic, Burning, Wrath and Cat. Well Classic wow is Now out so. Just need the other Favorite expansions to have Servers too.

      Cata was rubbish, what are you talking about? If anything, wotlk was the balance point, and even that expansion fucked a lot of things.

      Think you're confusing MoP with WOD.
      I easily made 150k/week in WOD, ending up with 6 gold capped characters in time for Legion.

      @@Bummulon MoP I was easily making close to 200k + a week. and I was just a Gathering and Farming Profession only. I actually stopped Playing WoW maybe a month into WOD. Was getting burnt out playing it like 12 to 16 hours a day 7 days a week. SO yeah.

    The difference is that Classic is an adventure while Retail is a chore.

    I think one thing your forgetting is that max level in BFA is 120 and in classic its 60? Can't remember. No one would want to level like classic is from 1 to 120

      Pfft speak for yourself. As long as the leveling remains fun and rewarding then it doesn't matter if its 60 or 120 lvl cap. It bout the journey not so much the destination.

    So I did something similar personally with the stress test (since I'll never get beta) and honestly, classic isn't that big a deal to me. I played several different zones in classic then went into retail and leveled in the same areas, and retail was much more enjoyable to me. And I actually ended up using similar game play between both of them (classic I would eat and/or drink more often than in retail) there are aspects I do miss from classic (getting weapon skills, purchasing abilities) but the leveling experience was really that big a deal. I found myself enjoying the pace of retail over classic where I do feel like an important person. Plus one of my characters was a mage and nothing is more frustrating than having that last fireball that would kill the mob and use all your mana, just to see "RESIST" fly up and now you gotta wack it to death. I'm one that appreciates challenge but classic hasn't really given me that challenge at low level, it's just slower. But that's my opinion, I am glad to see people appreciate it. But since playing in 2005, I can see where retail improved on some areas while we are still missing in others, leveling being where I really do believed it improved. (Wow this comment was much longer than I intended). But all in all, great video in showcasing your experience and what you enjoy about classic! I do look forward to more since after the stress test, I won't be able to do this.

    "We have around 1 silver 86 copper"... around? :P Pretty much seems you got exactly 1s 86c. Anyway, just joking around. Good comparison, tho wouldn't mind seeing the differences to lvl20 at least. It's been a while since I played vanilla (no wonder... :'D) so completely forgotten how it was exactly.

    What about an raiding comparison ? Oh wait, people never do that. Leveling is the weak point of retail because people don't want to level nowadays, thats true. Even for Classic, a lot of people are preparing full dungeon rush to skip leveling lol.
