  • Arriving in Suzhou felt like such a luxury. After 3 days of sweaty hiking and sleep deprivation we were relieved to get some much needed rest and recovery time. I might have...lost it a bit...when we arrived at our gorgeous hotel, the Pan Pacific Suzhou. We had a great time exploring several Suzhou gardens and go to the Tongli Water Town which is often compared to Venice because of the quaint canals and old buildings.

Omg I can't believe you actually went to Tongli. It's where my great grandma was from and I still have a couple of distant cousins living there. I remember they started charging visitors for entering the town many years ago after it became famous. There was this old grandpa that sold home made stinky tofu on the street and it was delicious. I hope he's still there next time I go back to visit

So, that fish is called a "Squirrel Fish" because the sound it should make when you pour the sweet and sour sauce on the freshly fried fish is this squeaking sound like a squirrel. The finished result does resemble a pinecone, though.
That fruit skewer thing is traditionally made with hawthornes/crabapples. You got a more experimental one with different fruits. Not sure why they put a tomato on it, but tomatoes occupy an odd niche between fruits and vegetables.
Ah, the Pan-Pacific. Excellent chain of hotels which I've never stayed at, unfortunately.
The "form dollar hoof" is actually this sweet red-braised ham hock which is melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
Sidenote: are you from the American South by any chance? You have a drawl that tends to come out when you are excited about stuff, like puppies or candy.

Love your travel videos and your laughter is so infectious :-).
I grew up in China 20 years ago. I find that it is so inconvenient to not to have Chinese mobile phone service while travelling over there these days. Everything is on mobile, making payment, booking a taxi, you name it.
As a foreigner, although you can't easily just get a sim card at the airport, it's still easy to sort it out with any major phone service providers. They have lots of retail outlets in every city, just need to provide your passport as ID. Well worth the hassle.

That sugar tomato fruits on a stick, they didn't do it right, its a northern winter street sweet n you traditionally use Chinese hawthorn which is citrusy sour and a hint of bitter. In the north at way below freezing temperature you put it on a stick and dip it in boiling hot sugar, what should happen is it immediately freezes so its crispy sugary and hot at the same time, not to mention the sour and sweet evens out so you're left with that fresh hawthorn taste, also because the sugar is sticky so the sour sweet taste lasts for a while. What you had was a mimic n nowadays they use....tomatoes n pineapple...sigh...btw I used to live close to Siberia, so north, way north....Jon Snow north!!!

I had that type of fish in Suzhou as well. Although that was not in the old city like Claire did. I had it in some high class restaurant they recommended me.
The cuisine is sweet as hell.
The fruit you ate looks more like hawthorn than tomato. Its covered with sugar. Think of it as the Chinese equivalent to a toffee apple you eat at fun fairs.

And you guys ordered a Xinjiang cuisine in Suzhou??! That's strange. It won't be authentic of course. You may enjoy more of your journey when you put some effort to look what to eat :) Have fun!

the dish got the name from the sound, not by how it looks lol, so apparently after you pour the sugary sauce onto the fried fish, it makes the sound of a squirrel? Well i personally have never heard it bc each time the serve the dish with sauce already poured on, so yeah im curious about what it actually sounds like.
