A lot of people don't realize how insane this car is. A reliable, fast and nimble lightweight, front-wheel drive car that drives like a rear-wheel drive car. Still own a '91 LS. Amazing car. Changed the original clutch at 190,000 miles. I know a guy who had two Tegs stolen in late '90s. One was a GSR and the second was a Type R. He still can't talk about it.
What is seam welded? I'm assuming all the seams are welded and gave the car more structural rigidity? And hand cranked engine? Like hand cranked to torque specs? And why are 5 lugs better? Stronger?
Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is gonna be running 3 Honda Civic's with spoon engines. On top of that he just came into Harry's and ordered 3 t66 turbo's with NOS's and a Motec System Exhaust.
As always, I enjoyed your presentation Doug. I owned a 2001 ITR in Nighthawk Black Pearl - Number 703. The car was a blast to drive and honestly had you driven it back in the day, you would have rated it much higher. The problem is that so many of the performance cars today easily outperform it that you just can't get the same excitement from it. Considering the front drive platform, the car was an excellent track car given the fact that it was designed to pivot quickly around sharp turns with a brief tap of the brakes and then flooring the gas to bring it back in line. Done right this was an amazing experience and only one other Type R owners can truly appreciate. Doing it wrong however would land you in the woods, off the track or into a telephone pole. I was much older than the average ITR owner when I bought mine for my 40th birthday. The car was unique as it had developed a cult following pretty much upon landing in the USA. Most people had never seen one before. I loved and hated the car. People would approach me to take pics with it, to touch it, to sit in it and so forth. Every young kid wanted to race me which I just was not into and I became exhausted with the car in a very short time due to its fanfare. It was a blast to drive but could be very dangerous for inexperienced drivers that would go for the brakes when they actually should have gone for the gas pedal instead to pull them out of a bad fish tale maneuver. If you honed your skills however, the car would do well below your 7 second 0-60 which could often be achieved in the low six second range. The car that felt like a grownup ITR was my 2008 S2000 CR. That car had been taken to finishing school and truly was a wonderful car to not only drive but I could sit down with a cold beer and stare at it all day long. My favorite of the lot and the one car that I will always regret selling however was my 2004 VW R32. While not quite the track car that either the ITR or CR were, the overall driving experience was simply incredible and that engine note was to die for. Right before my best friend died of terminal cancer in 2009, they told me not to wait any longer because $hi& happens and they told me to buy my dream car. I sold both the R32 and the CR and picked up a 911 Cabriolet. That car was amazing but much like the other cars mentioned here, I was always afraid to leave it any place in fear that it might get scratched of vandalized so in 2012 I sold it, bought my daughter a VW golf and sent her off to college. That indeed was my best ever car experience and only a parent will be able to understand what I have said here. I've been fortunate to have owned 27 cars in my time but now that I'm pushing 60, the kids must come first and that is just fine with me. One last note: If anyone questions your placement of the MR2 Spyder let me say this. It too was one of the most fun cars I have ever owned and while not as fast as the other cars mentioned here, it was not only a blast to drive but was incredibly comfortable. I picked mine up in Texas and drove it back to Long Island, NY 1,700 miles in 2 days and those two days were some of the most fun days that I have ever had behind the wheel. To all the young car people reading this comment, God Bless all of you!!!!!! Have your fun but please drive carefully. I've pulled more bodies out of cars then I care to mention and only two of them were from drunk driving, the rest were from answering what they considered to be emergency texts which ultimately turned into real emergencies. Peace to you all...................
I also owned a Type R and it was a blast to drive back in the day. I was in my early twenties and was always afraid that it would be stolen. I would always find hand prints on my windows from people trying to look inside.
First car was a stock one owner 99 Integra LS.. Favorite and most reliable car I've ever owned, put nearly 200k miles on it. Would still own it to this day, However... Yes it was stolen and completely stripped. Still kills me to this day.
Literally right around the corner from my house sits a late model GS-R in pristine condition. The street it's parked on gets quite a bit of traffic so It must get a lot of attention. I'm baffled as to how it hasn't been stolen yet. I was almost tempted to knock on the owner's door and tell he or she to be extra careful. But that might have looked a wee bit suspicious.
you probably dont care about your integra. sell it to me ill even pay for shipping. i promise ill take better care of it and ill find that clock door and fix it too. let me know
I had a 94YM Integra Vti-R with sunroof alloys and rear spoiler in metallic black. It was huge fun and the reason I ended up with the Mercedes CLK I now own. If only the merc would rev past 8...
90's...ahhh the best Japan car years....Integra type R/Honda Prelude, Acura NSX, Toyota MR2 turbo, Toyota Celica Alltrac awd turbo ( uber rare), Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, Mazda RX7 FD3S twin turbo, MKIV Toyota Supra twin turbo, mitusubishi 3000 GT VR4/Dodge stealth Twin turbo, Eclipse GSX/Talon TSi/Plymouth Laser DSM's, Mitsubishi Galant VR4/Mitsubishi mirage turbo...I do miss those days...
I had the pleasure of owning a 1999 ITR DC2 here in Melbourne (Australia).... in which I clocked up 165,000 kms (from new) & enjoyed 13 track days during my 5.5 years of driving nirvana. I was utterly addicted to the VTEC scream of the B18C engine, the wonderfully slick gearbox, dynamic handling & complete package of Honda engineering. Even 17 years on & after driving many higher spec cars, the memories of the DC2 remain as some of my best driving experiences ==> I would buy another one anytime!
I like the horn buttons, they are easier to honk while making an evasive maneuver vs pressing the middle of the steering wheel. Also they offer more control if you want to politely tap your horn to tell the car in front the light turned green. Downside is it's easier to accidentally honk your horn.
It's true a lot of modern cars feel soulless. Even if I was rich, I'd still love to buy and own these types of cars. They're just so cool and have so much personality
J w L What a stupid comment. Older cars are much simpler and more fun in general... and if someone can spend $40k on this then I’m sure they can afford a newer one for $599 a month😆
J w L, B.S. I can afford most of the luxury cars he reviews but I also think those reviews are far more boring than those of older, "everyman" cars or rare cars.
It would be nice also to stop counting things in the car like we're in kindergarten, like the X amount of badges, logos or serial numbers, I don't get it.
@@remytv C'mon, Doug's reviewed dozens of cars this way and it's his thing. He's literally telling you in every single video that he's about to nitpick quirks on the car.
Robert D. With a gto as your profile pic. Someone appreciates great cars. Thanks for not being one of the stupid haters on this video with a “ I rather buy a crashed lambo and fix it with Tavarish than buy a 40k integra “ comments.
ive always found that a bit weird... Every other country (atleast now) also uses the DOT safety testing, but by some reason theyre different? i dont get it... Agree on some fuckin testing and sell the cars to the whole world... Thats what pisses me off about the car industry.
The Gaming Norwegian most likely Japan didn't require dot regulation back in the day. Makes sense though, the roads are smaller and the speed limits are lower in japan
Japan got the round headlights as well. It's just they all hated them so they switched over to the "jdm" styled headlights. Therefore they sold all the extra ones to America.
I had the 1.6 civic r here in Ireland and later that exact car imported from Japan and after that the ep3 type r . they were all rapid motors for the time they existed ya America is on the ball with the hell cat now and the new corvette but in the 90s how many v8s pushed out that power naturally . not many I live there for a while you guys got some really cool motors and Ford trucks and the hemi motors but hp to engine size was crap
Yeah I had a friend who owned one when it first came out 97 and that's what he totally pointed out to me and we've seen so many type R's with 4 lug nuts laugh at them
René Van Sickle, you sir don’t know the first thing about a integra type r if you think they was only made in 5x114.3 cause they was most definitely made in 4x114.3 in 94-97 and I happen to own one that is 4x114.3. Easy to mistake for just regular 4x100 but it’s not. Not near as many were made in 4x114.3 and is quite rare to run across. Your actually gonna pay more for 4x114.3 itr stuff than 5x114.3 simply because it’s hard to find. Not nearly as desired as the 5 lug because of the iconic 16 inch itr wheels and the 5 lug had slightly better breaks than the previous 4x114.3. Just a little information for you because 95% of people have no idea that they made a integra type r in 4x114.3. Like I said I do own one and would be more than glad to make a review video for anybody interested.
I had a 2000 Integra Type R for a couple years and I loved it! 5 speed manual and limited slip differential it handled amazing. I did a couple modifications such as lowering it with eibach springs and added a Cat-Back exhaust and cold air intake. Ended up selling it to a college friend and immediately regretted it. This video brings back memories...
I sold my 2000 yellow Type R to buy a 2003 BMW M3. I still have the M3 which is Dinan Modified and sits on HRE wheels. The car hardly ever moves and is a garage queen. I have been driving the Tesla Model 3 Performance as a daily now.
Owner of 01-1233 checking in. An interesting fact about the 2001 ITR is that in Canada we only got championship white with red front and rear seats. Canada also sold the ITR in 1999. Many ITR parts were desirable for all the Civic and Integra owners so they were magnets for theft. Next time I have a passenger I will be sure to say "Look at my plaque!!"
Ian previous #01-1256 here! I loved my Canadian type R! I was young and dumb and crashed it many years ago :( www.integratyper.org/usdm/rides/011256/011256.htm
I am 32 yrs old I was big in this scene and I do remember that I am Ottawa resident my background memory was trying to remind me of the white version w red seats great comment!
FRFM00 It is funny I was digging around on Honda tech where and figured out the user who owned my car new. His friend had a white with red interior 2001 and actually traded interior with an owner with black interior because they didn't like the red. I am lucky my interior survived.
There was a kid from cali at my school in Oregon that had a CW ITR.... was new, and of course he allegedly crashed it. Was the nicest car on campus, but he apparently was one of those kids that the parents handed him everything, so didn't appreciated it... meanwhile the rest of us had POS $800 vehicles. Later on I wanted to find a clean Silver GSR just to daily, gave up looking after 2+ years as everyone of them was crashed/repaired/modified/not taken care of... Never was a fan of the RSX...
Doug, your scoring system is absurd for the integra type r; only 2/10 acceleration for a 90's car that clocked 5.5secs to 60mph in the UK magazine Performance car. That is quick for a 1.8 normally aspirated car; 6/10 handling, yet it is quoted as one of the finest handling front wheel drive cars ever here in the UK, obtaining five out of five stars by the majority of motoring journalists. Think you missed encapsulating the immersive driving experience by a long way too, when changing at near 9000 revs on a back road with the chassis communication a layer removed from most modern cars. You didn't push the integra enough to uncover its special handling capabilities. This video has too much focus on aesthetics for a car that was built primarily for driver interaction.
He doesn't score things based on the time periods they were from, although I and many others really feel that he should. If he did, some cars would score a LOT higher.
yes actually, a UK market integra dc2 in Milano red clocked 0-60mph in 5.5secs back in Performance Car magazine in 1998; I still have the magazine test and the staff writers went on to form EVO magazine, a well respected automotive publication here in the UK. They did the run in opposite directions. EVO magazine clocked 6.2secs in a later dc2.
I absolutely love 90’s Honda gauges, and I don’t know why, they’re simple linear and sharp, and every 90’s Honda you drive including the accord you can kinda squint your eyes and imagine your driving a NSX
This and the GS-R are some of my all time favorites, amazingly fun little cars. I’d like to see a Prelude reviewed one day, probably the greatest handling front wheel drive car of all time. Also was my first car, a ‘93 Si, but it would be better to see a 5th gen Prelude reviewed, 99-‘01 preferably.
THIS is a Doug Demuro. This is the ONLY one made on earth. Today, we're going to go over my own quirks and features, and then I'm going to give myself a DougScore
5timeAcademyAwardwinner Kirk Lazarus I wish I still had my gsr. What a great car, simple, fun, reliable, and great daily driver. Too bad they don’t make anything like it anymore.
When Doug spoke about engines being stolen, it reminded me of that scene from the 1st fast and furious movie when that Asian dude stole those engines from the civics and integras hahaha
I'd totally pay $40,000 for a type R in that pristine condition but then again i am a 90s kid. I grew up paying NES and Genesis and later got into the racing scene where the Type R was all the rage. Kids these day don't get that. Also, I never thought I'd say the phrase "kids these days" when I was younger lol.
There are so many faster cars from the 90's you could buy, though. For example, many of the cars from Road & Track's Need For Speed. The Corvette ZR-1 could easily be had now in great condition at that price. The Dodge Viper RT/10 could also easily be had with that budget. Of course the RX-7 would be easy. The 911 Carrera would be doable. The Supra would probably be difficult at that budget, and the NSX probably more difficult still.
Even if you could buy a C4 ZR1 or a Viper for that price, good luck maintaining them for a budget. Both cars are a pain in the ass, unlike this ITR which is a simple Honda.
I never got into American cars that much although personally i love the vettes. The RX-7 and NSX were other iconic cars from that era and i wouldn't mind owning one of those.
el jefe shut up you fat ugly ass loser try doing something besides wasting your time talking shit and u wouldn't be the broke emo loser you are now typing comments from your moms basement
My x had a gsr. She was so happy with it until she woke up the next morning. It was gone. She lived in an apartment complex at the time. The car never stood a chance
i had a 95 gsr too. best part of my life even compared to other more expensive cars. i had a rs-r exhaust, do really get some unwanted attention at the parking lot while unattended. i know that feel bro. the only thing that can complain about the car is fabric seats producing to much dust.
@@Ropey get a lo-jack and make sure its professionally installed and set up. keep the card ready. they might have alarms with wifi apps and stuff now too. I've been out of the game for at least 12 years so I'm not up on all the latest.
This car should have gotten an 8 or 9 for the cool factor IMO. This car largely defined what would come in the next few decades, and for those coming of age during the late 1990s/early 2000s, this car had the same effect that the Grand National did for those coming of age during the 1980s, or the Trans Am did for those during the 1970s. Most people who were into cars during the era went gaga over the car, and for good reason. I wanted one so badly when they came out. Even with the high price tags, it's a car I'd consider buying today as it's no different than someone a few decades older than me investing a couple bucks to buy the muscle car they wanted from their younger years (I'd probably try for negotiating a somewhat lower price tho!) Plus I don't see the value going down.
This. I drove a '94 back in high school and people even then were always interested in my car. It was a fun ride to learn how to drive stick in, and it was roomy too despite its size. I moved to my dorm with all of my possessions crammed in. I remember going to the local Sonic after a football game with my girlfriend in the color guard sitting passenger and her four friends (all teeny color guard girls) all laying in the trunk with the seats down. A couple guys from the marching band were sitting there eating when I pulled up, popped the trunk, and had five girls climb out. This car was very low maintenance and rock solid all year round. I camped in the car several times too; with the seats down, a couple pillows, and a sleeping bag, it was great with that nice view from the back window. This car was definitely the nerd's Trans Am of the '90s and '00s.
@@Kev27RS I've always wondered this myself given how the ITR was a Honda elsewhere. The ITR was far and away from being a luxury car, and the Integra itself was certainly far and away from this - at least relative to what Honda vs. Acura is today. All-in-all, its brand differentiation wasn't hugely different from the Civic. It was in some ways a little more luxurious, but it was ultimately another car where most of its value/desirability (of the standard models) came from the reliability aspect, and somewhat later on from tuners liking the car.
Doug, this was such a great video. My friends and I all lusted after this car. It wasn't and isn't all that great of a car, though. But, we loved the rarity of it. Price jump is to be expected. It is rare with only 3900 made for the US market and like you said they were stolen and/or modified which makes looking for one seem pointless. This is how I feel about a lot of Japanese cars from the 90's. Almost always they are modified and that makes them unattractive as a purchase. Congratulations on the find and review of this great piece of 90's engineering.
When I was 18, my uncle came over with a 1997 Integra Type R brochure and of course, mind blown. From that day forward I went crazy trying to figure out how to get a $25,000 ITR when I was making a little over $4 an hour (remember, 1997). I was never able to afford a new car until I hit my 30's. It was actually painful, no, make that excruciating, that I couldn't have this car. Especially being 18 with no friends.
I challenge you to find a better-performing vehicle in the same class in the same era. If you thought this wasn't all that great of a car you never drove one. I had it tuned up 97 'lude that was crazy fast and I got spanked by this one Integra Type R on a weekly basis. Beast of a car
‘..... it wasn’t and isn’t all that great of a car....’ WHAT? Great gearchange, engine revs to 8400, adjustable handling, awesome Recaro Speed (for the Europe/Asia market), supremely reliable, and the LSD! Don’t forget the LSD! Did you track yours? It’s basically a race car for the road and many considered it to be the best FWD car in that era. Come on man....
Like the mid 90’s Supras that are also escalating in price this wasn’t all that. Come on 50K sometimes for a clean Supra? 40K for a clean ITR(Integra Type-R)? They are both amazing cars, but for that kind of money I would rather have modern amenities. Also, racing isn’t my thing anymore. I will end with this. If I found an ITR for 10-15k I would buy it in a heartbeat, but 40K? Thank you, I’ll spend my hard earned money somewhere else. Thank you all for adding to the discussion.
Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that, he just went into Harry's, and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS. And a Motec exhaust
When I was around 5 years old, I had a neighbor that had 2 of these and they both got stolen. It was pretty sad since one of the integras was his dead brothers
THIS is actually the reason the ITR is going up in price. I've known maybe 10 people who owned one of these over the last 20 years. Probably 7 of them got stolen at some point in time.
I owned one of these for several years in the mid 00s. Sold it when I was in graduate school. SUPER fun car to drive. Mine was a stock 98. I would love to own one again. Just pure fun simple driving.
The highschool classmates who always had the craziest and insanely powerful versions of these in the upper 90's parent's were lawyers and doctors. Money well spent. Those MF were crazy
Doug you missed one feature about the clock when the keys out of the ignition that little flap that you push down when you close it and press on it it will display the time😱
He Also said Carbon Fiber is fake, few times, but its not true, I had this car it is 100% real carbon fiber, you can even see how it meshes with plastic and its real! MAN DOUG! I am dissapointed!
My Integra drove like it was on rails. Ninety felt like a leisurely fifty-five and a fun drive. I had to sell after it was just too hard to get OEM parts to keep it maintained. Over 250K trouble-free miles.
Well not sure how costly importing a car in the US is, but you can get one from some countries in Europe for less than 10.000. You could probably import one (since they are now over 20 years old) that has the cool looking headlights and it will still cost you less than finding one in the US.
I've driven a Type R in the 90s, its one of the most overrated cars ever produced. Its a sported up economy car, and it feels like it, and objectively its drastically inferior in every measurable way to even the worst economy car based sport hatchbacks today. Compare this to say a used low mileage Mustang Ecoboost Premium, and the only way you can justify the cost of an old Integra is pure nostalgia.
It's all about the handling not acceleration. That's what made the Integra Type R's famous back in the day. Not that fast in acceleration but you could really thrash them around the corners. Of course that doesn't mean that the handling wasn't improved in other cars throughout the years. And in the US it sure as hell isn't worth 40K to get one. But where I live, where you can find a good one for 5-6K, it's not a bad choice.
They don't handle well by modern standards. Excessive spring rates result in a very crashy ride, producing a lot of squeaks and rattles. They had to overcome the problem of all front engine FWD cars in that they were nose heavy and overtaxed the front wheels, since they had extra weight over them, had to do the turning, and still do all the acceleration as well.
DumbDuck44 I worked for Honda in the 90s as a mechanic and they are not a sported up economy car. Leading Australian car magazine Wheels gave the Integra Vti-R their sports car of the year award in 1994 and the Type R is an uprated version of that. Here in NZ they were available for only the 2000 model year and I've never seen one for sale used EVER. I know a guy who bought one new for club racing on weekends, he removed the back seat and spare tyre, added race pads and slicks and it was untouchable on track.
no "seam welding" (using adhesive) gearbox is trash, suspension is not nearly as stiff. power output is not as good stock. I own an FK8 and driven an ST. Hands down the FK8 is better per equipment alone.
Also, Doug is so right about 90's "sports" cars and visibility. I have a 90 and 93 Miata and a 2016 Miata. The difference between the visibility of the two models is night and day. The new Miata doesn't even feel like a convertible compared to the old NA versions. Just because you have about 350 degrees of viability in the old ones. The rear deck is lower, the doors are lower, the A pillars are almost non-existent. I'd certainly feel safer in a rollover in the ND, but it doesn't even allow you to tilt back your head and look up at the sky. The windscreen and roof line is right in your face. Literally... with my hands on the wheel, I can extend my fingers and touch the glass. The NA just feels more open, more free. More like a convertible.
Almost hit somebody head-on in a KIA Forte I was driving the other day, because I was turning up a hill, and another car was coming, but I couldn't see them because of the big, clunky-ass A-pillar, the stupid little useless tweeter speaker enclosure etc.
People think its an aesthetic choice, but modern cars have to survive things like the small overlap test and side impacts without killing the driver. That means thicker pillars (often with airbags in them too) and more door reinforcements, and the aesthetic adjustments to that were more to cover that up. A 1990 Miata in a crash is pretty much guaranteed to crush your legs or face, in accidents that a 2016 Miata driver could just pop his collar, walk away from, and buy a replacement at the dealer the next day.
Some minor corrections/additions to the information in the video. 1: The 4 round headlights was not just the American market. The Mk3 Integra had the round headlights in Japan as well. The Japenese version of the Integra switched to the horizontal headlights in 1998 during the mid-model makeover. The 1997 US ITR and the early Japanese ITR had recessed double bubble headlights. For 1998 for the mid-model make over the Japanese market got the horizontal lights and the US market got flush-mounted double bubble headlights. 2: All Integras Type R destined for North America went to Canada in 1999. There are no 1999 ITRs in the US, but you will find them in Canada. The 1999 models were also only available in Championship White (the exact name of the shade of white for the 1997-1999 models). The colors for 2000 and 2001 are Phoenix Yellow and Flamenco Black Pearl.
shadowboy813 The Japanese model had the bubble headlights in 93 and 94 only. Honda switched to the horizontal headlights in 95 for the Japanese model, they did not wait until 98. The JDM ITR debuted in 96 with the horizontal headlights, the JDM ITR never came with bubble headlights. 2000 ITR came in Phoenix Yellow and Flamenco Black Pearl, the 2001 ITR came in Phoenix Yellow and Nighthawk Black Pearl.
My sister's first car back in 2001 was a 1991 Acura Integra 4 door. I learned to drive with that car, and my goodness, it was amazing. It accelerated like a sports car, steering was precise, and suspensions were just so fluid and interactive, giving the ride experience a unique feel. My dad sold it a few years later for $1800 😔😢😪
Do you change your Doug Scores as time goes on? You keep putting all these old cars up to modern day standards, but even a car from 2015 doesn't have backup cameras as standard like all 2019 cars do. Seems unfair
Hmm, I don't think so. I think that the Dougscore is objective because it pits every car against modern standards. Dougscore looks to the present, as the video is made. Obviously standards are still changing, so Dougscore is by no means perfect, but in comparing an old car with a newer car that you're going to be driving today, there isn't much that's better than dougscore.
I wouldn't be following score but following price tag of replacing parts and maintenance. There are older car to be much nicer compare to today cars with too many tech screen and what have you, to be far too much distraction and don't even need it but a radio and a car that get me to work. I own a 2004 Cavalier LS with a good motor in it with 125k mile on it and taken very good care of, sadly Kelly Blue book I found out about is own by a car salesman company and will raise or lower price on bullshit values. Research what can go wrong with the car and see if anyone have the right to make those specific part as car company will NOT make new part like my broken door pillar screw hole on my passenger side. Car company are asshole and they get away with their own criminal to make sure there will never be new competion to build their money on the hill. $50,000 for a car now? Fuck that shit.
I have a 95 4dr Integra turbo gs-r. I pulled the radio out cause the motor is the music. I absolutely love Integras. Yes I have a 500whp 135i but I still love driving the Gs-r!
The Type R was an upgrade from the GSR. Better brakes, strut supports and the biggest item Doug missed, the motor had 15+ than the VTEC GSR. The Type R also had a hand assembled motor. I had a 95' GSR and teared up watching this video remembering mine.
Honda's aim with the Vtec was to essentially have two cars (or better two engines) in one. Two cam profiles, one for normal city driving and more power at high rpms when you need it. This is no surprise, i wonder why people say "you have to rev high to feel the power", DUH! this is the whole point. It was designed to be that way. This is exactly what i love about Vtec engines that are truly unique and fun to drive. To fully appreciate the Integra Type R, and to find out how well balanced it is and why it has enough horsepower once you learn how to use it, you have to drive it on a track or in curvy roads. It may be a little outdated today (especially the interior which is awful) but the true pleasure comes on curvy roads, not straight line accelerations.
I totally understand why it worth 40 ground ,really its just an iconic 90's import . Civic and integra are hot . Oh and especially this model ,absolutely stock from the factory ,this is an amazing one .
"rags it out"? Dude, do you even Honda? I redlined my CRX all day for 890,000 miles (not a typo) and it didn't fail anything once, or not start, or break anything at all (except I replaced the clutch at ~600,000 miles) until I wrecked it into a guard rail. Did the same with my GSR and Prelude, minus the wrecking part. Today I drive an Element with just over 300,000 miles and it's still flawless minus a tear in the drivers seat. That's D, B, H, and K series engines that all are flawless with many hundreds thousands of miles and that are driven like I'm an asshole. I probably am... but point is, if you've never owned a Honda, you'll never understand. These things last a long ass time no matter how hard you drive them.
My sister had a red Integra but it was a regular Integra. It was a 5 Speed manual but she and I loved it. She sold it to her Ex-Husband's dad and bought a 4 Door 2006 Civic because she had a kid. But I always loved that car and I think it was the first car she bought herself. Love the videos! Keep them up! 🙂
The ITR came out when I was a Junior in HS. It was every kids wet dream. And because of that, there was no shortage of GSRs and RSs in the school parking lot with NOPI catalog Type-R badges and wings stuck to the back of them. But then one kid actually got a real one (wealthy parents who owned a Honda/Acura dealership) and no one thought it was real until he showed us the arm-rest plaque. And like a typical HS kid of that time, he painted it sky blue, added a JDM front end, and clear taillights.
One of my favourite Japanese cars. This is a classic and I love the colour too. The Type R cars are a legend, especially the early 90s cars, and now rare as rocking horses.
My ex Gf's '98 Integra Type-R wasn't stolen, She crashed it racing in Fla. - she really hates herself for that. The RSX-S's she got after never made up for the Integra. - Love how all the Honda Fans are out for this one! I even had a 6th gen 2000 Honda Civic Si Coupe in high school (Yes I regret never changing the oil and blowing the motor) which was based off this car except didn't have this engine. Do more Hondas Doug!

They really do have incredible handling
You missed the fact that they are seam welded from the factory and the motor was torque by hand. They truly are a special car
5 lugs too
What is seam welded? I'm assuming all the seams are welded and gave the car more structural rigidity? And hand cranked engine? Like hand cranked to torque specs? And why are 5 lugs better? Stronger?

This was a lot of words.
Why
First car was a stock one owner 99 Integra LS.. Favorite and most reliable car I've ever owned, put nearly 200k miles on it. Would still own it to this day, However... Yes it was stolen and completely stripped. Still kills me to this day.
StrangeClouds did you put an LS in it?
LS stands for luxury sport................................
I had a 96 Integra LS as my first car. It was stolen and stripped too. Shame these cars are such thief magnets.
My first car was a 2000 Integra LS.

I like the horn buttons, they are easier to honk while making an evasive maneuver vs pressing the middle of the steering wheel. Also they offer more control if you want to politely tap your horn to tell the car in front the light turned green. Downside is it's easier to accidentally honk your horn.

The JDM front end wasn’t on the US type R because it wouldn’t pass DOT safety crash testing. The crash bar is much smaller on the JDM front.
ive always found that a bit weird... Every other country (atleast now) also uses the DOT safety testing, but by some reason theyre different? i dont get it... Agree on some fuckin testing and sell the cars to the whole world... Thats what pisses me off about the car industry.

Plus the American delivered cars didn't get the Recaro's as was standard in the Japanese or Australian delivered Type-R's?
The Gaming Norwegian most likely Japan didn't require dot regulation back in the day. Makes sense though, the roads are smaller and the speed limits are lower in japan
Japan got the round headlights as well. It's just they all hated them so they switched over to the "jdm" styled headlights. Therefore they sold all the extra ones to America.
No mention of 5 lugs, one of the major differences.

shawn guillory gosh thank you!!! I just mentioned that too
René Van Sickle, you sir don’t know the first thing about a integra type r if you think they was only made in 5x114.3 cause they was most definitely made in 4x114.3 in 94-97 and I happen to own one that is 4x114.3. Owner of 01-1233 checking in. An interesting fact about the 2001 ITR is that in Canada we only got championship white with red front and rear seats. Canada also sold the ITR in 1999. Many ITR parts were desirable for all the Civic and Integra owners so they were magnets for theft.

Probably the best fwd in the 90's along side things like the Peugeot 306 gti 6.
He doesn't score things based on the time periods they were from, although I and many others really feel that he should. If he did, some cars would score a LOT higher.
Wtf its not 5.5 0-60
yes actually, a UK market integra dc2 in Milano red clocked 0-60mph in 5.5secs back in Performance Car magazine in 1998; I still have the magazine test and the staff writers went on to form EVO magazine, a well respected automotive publication here in the UK. They did the run in opposite directions. EVO magazine clocked 6.2secs in a later dc2.

Solomon Naz, same here man. If I had 40k to throw at a car it would be this one right here, and I would drive it loud and proud.
Doug did a review of the r34 - another iconic car from that era - a close second would be the supra! Remember those?? lol

I never got why the Integra was sold as an ACURA in the US instead of a HONDA...
Wasn't ACURA supposed to be HONDA's luxury brand??
🤔
@@Kev27RS I've always wondered this myself given how the ITR was a Honda elsewhere. The ITR was far and away from being a luxury car, and the Integra itself was certainly far and away from this - at least relative to what Honda vs. Acura is today. All-in-all, its brand differentiation wasn't hugely different from the Civic. It was in some ways a little more luxurious, but it was ultimately another car where most of its value/desirability (of the standard models) came from the reliability aspect, and somewhat later on from tuners liking the car.
@@Kev27RS I guess they didn't want the Integra to hurt Prelude sales.
@@SwapBlogRU Maybe...
🤔
Doug, this was such a great video. My friends and I all lusted after this car. It wasn't and isn't all that great of a car, though. But, we loved the rarity of it.
Price jump is to be expected. It is rare with only 3900 made for the US market and like you said they were stolen and/or modified which makes looking for one seem pointless. This is how I feel about a lot of Japanese cars from the 90's. Almost always they are modified and that makes them unattractive as a purchase.
Congratulations on the find and review of this great piece of 90's engineering.
ricky v haha yeah, we are lucky enough that dougey reviewed one.
Finding one to own would be insane at this point!
Well one thats not ruined anyways.
Kamil Cichocki nice
Johnny Tran's gonna be running Nissan SR20 motors in his Civics. Ted's guaranteed it.
That's nothing compared to getting a double cheese with fries for 2.95...
Smoke him!
Project Soul I like the tuna here...
that clock is sorta nostalgic as we had a similar one in our old 2001 Honda CR-V.
When I was around 5 years old, I had a neighbor that had 2 of these and they both got stolen. It was pretty sad since one of the integras was his dead brothers
Peter do you even know how to read? He meant one of the Integras belonged to his neighbor’s dead brother.
Tyrone do you even sarcasm?
THIS is actually the reason the ITR is going up in price. I've known maybe 10 people who owned one of these over the last 20 years. Probably 7 of them got stolen at some point in time.
Tj Kriesen don't. Just don't.

I owned one of these for several years in the mid 00s. Sold it when I was in graduate school. SUPER fun car to drive. Mine was a stock 98. I would love to own one again. Just pure fun simple driving.
i got mine from a guy who was going to graduate school and his name was alex wang
The highschool classmates who always had the craziest and insanely powerful versions of these in the upper 90's parent's were lawyers and doctors. Money well spent. Those MF were crazy

Doug you missed one feature about the clock when the keys out of the ignition that little flap that you push down when you close it and press on it it will display the time😱
Timboslice I scanned all the comments to see if anyone pointed this out. Sure enough, you did! That's attention to detail.
Peter Epstein Not that it matters much, but my 1991 Accord had the same clock panel and 'press to see time' thing.
Aerin Ravage yup, it was the same on lots of Hondas.

Integra type R is on my top 5 list of cars I want to buy but $40K for any Integra whether it’s a type R or not is way too excessive.
Doug only had to read 218 pages of owners manual to find a quirk
Jeff Boski Doug's the type of guy to read more than 218 pages of his cars owners manual.
Doug the type of guy to read 218 pages of his owners manual to find a quirk lol
It’s beautiful how much stories a car can have
ITR will hold much more value over the new CTR while the years go by...
2001 Acura Integra at Type R > 2018 Civic Type R
how and why
just no rarity, raw, or actually feels like a Honda. Just overall a better car. Any 90s honda feels a million times better then a new Honda
lol, I owned an FA5 and now an FK8. sorry, it's just not better XD you have most likley never even driven an FK8
jimmy I'm not quite sure about that.
no "seam welding" (using adhesive) gearbox is trash, suspension is not nearly as stiff. power output is not as good stock. I own an FK8 and driven an ST. Hands down the FK8 is better per equipment alone.
47/50 is a pretty good DougScore
So I wasn't hearing things when I heard Doug say that.
Customer: "Hi I was looking for a ballpoint pen"
Cashier: "Make and model?"
Customer: *Sigh* "2001 Acura Integra Type R"
I still have the pen and leather case from my Type R. I even received an Acura flashlight that is sitting somewhere in my tool box.
The round lights is the main reason I love the Integra 🤷♂️ never ever heard anyone complain until this video.
I see you flexin on us with that smart water
CJ White its how he got his intelligence
How is he 'flexing' on us with smart water? It's just water.
Rick Brito expensive water
Gabriel Figueroa, I bought Alkaline water this morning ;-; I thought that sh*t was expensive....
Australia also got the double headlights, poor form doug
shadowboy813 The Japanese model had the bubble headlights in 93 and 94 only.
My dad sold it a few years later for $1800 😔😢😪
Al H. damn ! no way
Do you change your Doug Scores as time goes on? You keep putting all these old cars up to modern day standards, but even a car from 2015 doesn't have backup cameras as standard like all 2019 cars do. Seems unfair
Caleb Davies If you're planning to buy a car on his reviews. The doug score is very helpful.
You’re right. It’s silly.
I’ve been thinking this ever since he started it. He should really only score the cars in the context of the era they were designed and built.
Don’t forget that the Type R bodies were also stripped from weight and stitch welded
Also the Type R are seam welded for stiffer chassis, while the other integras are spot welded...
Doug the Type of guy to take an Integra to an Exotic Meet.
JohnStax I would
JohnStax Why you always worrying about Doug and what type of guy he is ?
you could, it would have its own crowd of passerby’s.
why you always spend your time trolling?

Doug looks like a combination of Quentin Tarantino and Tucker Carlson, with a little bit of Jay Leno in there as well.
Carltin Tuckertino?
Exactly
He sounds just like Jay Leno in his dry way of talking about the driving dynamics.
When VTEC engages is what made me fall in love with my R... no longer own it... but loved it.

Only has 37k miles, great shape, until Doug rags it out.
Walter Francis granny shifting not double clucthing like he should...lol

MR Islandtime its supposed to be a caliper
Caleb Davies incorrect. It's an H that looks like an A.
My sister had a red Integra but it was a regular Integra. It was a 5 Speed manual but she and I loved it. She sold it to her Ex-Husband's dad and bought a 4 Door 2006 Civic because she had a kid. @carshatter didn't one go for about 1m a few days ago ?
58,000? Big deal. Pristine classic muscle and Italian exotics sell for MILLIONS.
Why would a high price tag be a good thing? Here in Australia, you can buy a type r for like 12 grand, which is amazing because its more accessible.
@@roberthentschelmann916 the classic muscles are 30-40 years older and Italian super cars sold for millions at POS. Give it time.
I actually do prefer the round headlights
u gay is so the 2000's, now its cuz your sis-gender. Man I miss the times when this car was made.
Just get an S2000 , drive it yourself and leave everyone else to take the station wagon :)

Anyone that makes fun of Honda’s probably haven’t driven one. I did, now I own one. They are brilliantly engineered and incredible reliable!
I had a '97 Integra GSR I bought in 98 for the next 3 years in University. It was the best car for being young, dumb and having fun.
