This episode hits home cause my buddy had a buddy who died recently that LOVED and LIVED Type-R and had a right hand drive Type-R and worked at a Honda mechanic shop. RIP Type-R Chris.
As much as I am a BMW owner and enthusiast, and don't really feel anything towards Honda or Acura, that is very impressive. BMW needed 2.8 liters from the M52B28 to get 193hp out of it. They had a version of the E36 called the 318is, which was supposed to be a sporty 4cyl version of the E36. That had a 1.9 litre engine, and... 140hp. Not very impressive when you look at Honda at the time. Of course the E36 M3 made 286hp from the 2.8l engine, then 321 from the 3.2 after facelift, but that's a different league and was way more expensive than this Integra.
When the Type R came out in 1997 it had 195 hp. The Mustang GT of the time had 215hp. The Type R also weighed about 700-800 pounds less. Thats why 4 cylinder Honda’s were the rage in the late 90’s early 00’s. It was the best era of cars to grow up in and thats also when I turned 16 in 2001. Always wanted an ITR will get one someday!

FYI guys, your stock GS interiors have cushy passenger seats. That TypeR has what is known as a “racing seat” and “racing seats” have what can be referred to as hip and torso bolsters. In racing cars these seats help the driver stay in one spot when “strapped in” so they can effectively drive that car. These seats are built specifically for racing applications concerning driver safety (this including ability to drive the car). They are not designed to be comfortable or easy to move around on (cuz that sh**ff is not safe cornering @ over 100mph)... just For Y’all’s Info!
Thanks for a great review. Just a couple of little points you didn't mention about this car; it has a LSD - something quite rare for that era. The windscreen was also made thinner, to reduce weight. I have the same car - white and with the full body kit, production number 0101. I bought it in 2000 and have clocked 298,000Kms. (Having a big party when I hit 300,000Kms) I have NEVER touched the motor, though I often rev it well past 9,000rpm. In those 20 years I have paid out very little, except for basic stuff such as 2 clutches and 2 distributors and a couple of minor repairs. I replaced the original disc pads after 225,000Kms, as I just use my gears. It's hard to explain, but every time I hop into the seat, I get a feeling of excitement and anticipation. Many new cars can beat my Type R in a straight line, but few can beat me when it comes to being the quickest from A to B. I've got the money saved up to buy a new hot hatch, but I can't break away from this love affair and now, at 71 years of age, it's quite possible that me and my type R will be buried together.
After seeing a duo of buzzing RealTime Type R's open a can of whoop ass on a roster of Viper's and 911's etc on a rainy Vancouver street course in the late 90's I vowed right then and there to get one for myself. Finally in 2007 I purchased one and I am NEVER selling it.

Not sure why people keep saying it is the best FWD car. It was at the time. It's a great car. One I hope to own some day but it's not the best. The 8th Gen Civic is a better handling car.
Nah. Probe GT ZE swapped. Less than $2k and you probably won't hear the other guys $80k vtec yo. 200/170 NA, 7500 rpm lightweight Mazda v6, axle bolts to the engine block to reduce tq steer. Has no trouble getting into 3rd. Extra 10-15hp/tq picking the right ecu. Sounds better than a Honda too.
Every car channel has been running out of valuable original content. Theyre all the same crap. From Zosh to Fitment Industries. They all rely on trendy trap music and extreme useless "comedic" antics to hype their dumb content. No real analytical or technical knowledge to be found, only focusing on the most mundane features on the cars to give the impression that they have texhnical knowkedge.
Do you really see people hyping up this car up tho? Compared to the Nsx, Supra, and Skyline which are popular with non-car people you don't see people raving about the Integra. Not to mention it was in the movie for what a total of 40 seconds?
@@gt131970 For the crowd that actually knows cars and doesn't rate them by how long they are featured in movies, yes, I see them hyped up all the time.
@slam slam If a chef serves Kraft Macaroni and cheese I don't have to know how to boil a pot of water to say that is shit. If a youtube channel makes meh videos I don't have to make videos to point that out.
They might as well just say: Guys remember the first-gen NSX we first started making about 20 years ago? Please remember that when you buy our shitty bloated SUVs and our average sedans. You could go for our overcomplicated new NSX that shares almost no characteristics with the original! Wait what, you want a new Integra? Why? You want us to make a new Legend? But why would you want something good like that silly?
@Frank White Acura is pleading desperately for you to just at least take a look at their TLX before you leave to BMW but you can’t take your eyes off of their receding hairline and deep down you know Acura has put their old high school letterman jacket in a shrine in his closet where he goes to look at it and remember his glory days.
Just bought my son's 2000 Type R. Honestly kind of excited. It's mostly stock; I think only the air intake and and the intake manifold have been changed. It's a bit rough but I think I can baby it back.
Love this car, along with the 99-00 civic si. This was such a great era for Japanese cars. They were simple and effective, even though the new type r civic is cool it’s just got way to much going on. Honda really nailed it with these cars.
The '99 Si is just sick. I bought a Eclipse GSX instead due to F&F but regret it still to this day. Was a hardcore Mitsubishi fan back then. What happened to that company? Honda also had the see till sexy AF Prelude as well.
My all time favorite! Simple, but mind blowing technology. Light weight, but just the right creature comforts. Modular as heck, but you could run all Honda components and have an awesome car.
He didnt mention was the front wind screen or window is lighter than any other integra too! I dont know if all windows were lighter but i know the front window was different for the Type R Dc2 !! It was ahead of its time and destroyed silvia's on the track !
The Integra Type R is insanely amazing. I fell in love with them when Peter Cunningham raced them with the RealTime team. I will own one at some point.
Been a mechanic now for 5 years and growing up loving cars by playing need for speed I have driven fixed all cars except hypercars but I was more happy to service integra and test drive it than any other car on the planet its gem
I know! I couldn't finish NFS Underground with the R34 and changed to the ITR (but not the samurai one) which was programmed to be slower but much nimbler. It cought my attention and led to a real championship white one being bought two years after.
save a dying culture and rebuild the NFSU Integra! If thats too much to handle just get a stock one as summer daily. Its not more expensive compared to a regular car
You can tell the real passion of a true gear head when he talks about this car, love the content, love the car and this is one of my favorite episodes guys!

I had a DA9 Integra which had serious chassis damage from a previous owner sliding it into a curb and it is still the best handing fwd car I've driven!
BrawlFreak786 trust me... there’s absolutely nothing sleeper about a gsr. It was the number one stolen car on the planet. Also no such thing as a low mile gsr either.
My GSR was soooo sick, my buddy bought it in 2008, with 40k mikes on it. Flawless car in and out, For something like $10,000. Over tge years, he drove it to Alaska and the Lower 48 multiple times, then one fall, in the rain up here, he was showing off to his 10 year Old brother in the pass seat, and hit an off ramp going way to fast, and ping pong'd all 4 corners between the guard rails, totalling the body. I bought it from him for a grand, and drove it to about 180k miles, them when it finally was dead (wrecked again...), I sold the Fat 5 rims for $1500, and the rest of the car with a knocking engine for $2100. Score! And that was the only time I've ever made money on a car.
As a 90's kid I am in love with Hondas and think that they were the most beautiful cars until mid 00's. You tell me why.. I finally made it and bought an HR-V GH2 1.6 model and I feel superb!
Give him some time. Anytime anyone tries something new it takes them a while to develop the style and skills needed to do it. Pumphrey used to be a bit bland too to be honest. If you watch an episode of Up to Speed from a couple years ago, you'll see how far he's come. In even a few months I bet we'll be loving B2B just as much as we want to.
Living in a shithole might actually be better, since dudes just wanna smash a window and steal your radio or something. If you are in a high class neighborhood, it's the perfect spot to look for expensive cars and steal em. I live in a neighborhood full of old people and I plan on getting a cheap Integra or Civic, and even then I'm gonna install a fuel switch.
I had a '99 UK spec Honda Integra Type R... It's probably the best car I've ever owned. The engine and gearbox are absolutely phenomenal and it handles like it's on rails.
@@befer I fell sad for those who aren't capable of differentiating Top Gear from The Grand Tour, and assume that shows like these are supposed to be improvised. Utter fools...
@@gtgokujr idk, man, I can't really enjoy a show when I know that everything is an act. A very bad take on it aswell.. Like when they made Alabama look bad while I'm reality noone even went after them. Or when they faked Tesla breaking down while in reality nothing was wrong with it... It's a very shitty show and run by low lives without respect. Just ONE thing they done that should be enough to show you how worthless these people are is the Tesla situation. They made Tesla look bad while in reality it's a great performing car. They made Tesla look bad and so far everyone I know thought that top Gear is not fake... that's just wrong.
My grandma had an all white integra. Seeing that interior brought me back to leaving church on the way to godfathers pizza and I couldnt wait to spend my quarters on stickers in the vending machine or steal croutons from the salad bar or go play rampage on the arcade machines in the corner of the godfathers. Ahhh good times.
I had one, original Type R sitting in my ex-shop for almost half a decade. Was stolen(by someone who didnt know) when it was recovered, my shiftknob and driver seat head rest were the only thing missing. I was lucky, ended up selling it in 06'ish because I sold the shop and changed professions(mid life crisis) now in 2020 i still regret it. One of the best cars ever made, quality wise although my fav part was the driving position.. the way the dash extends to you and how sharp the steering wheel is with having tiny hand ring made it feel like a ferrari when driving.
I was working at grocery store when I was young & my friend walked in and showed me his white 2000 Integra outside , then next week it got stolen ! He had everything in that integra , purple HID lights, waxed the car , cool rims.
I appreciate the Integra, always have since I got into Japanese Tuners. Sadly I doubt Honda would revive this car as the Accord coupe was discontinued and I rarely see new Civic coupes, more hatchbacks and sedans. This just adds to the car's value as it's turning into a future classic
I'm from the Philippines and my dad got the Integra DC5 a few years after it was released and we even had to convert it to left hand drive which took some waiting and going to the airport back and forth and once we got it, my dad was so happy because he knew the DC5 was gonna be a killer, and boy was he right, he got bronze rims similar to the type s ones and did some interior stuff, the thing was naturally aspirated (for half of the time my dad had it) but it when we got a turbo, it was gapping civics and Lancers ane everythings everywhere, but than we got broke due to some personal family problems, and my dad had to sell the Integra to get a more reliable car, it shaped a core memory in my brain, accidentally dropping the clutch while handing it to my dad, almost scratching the door with scissors, and when we had the car, we were the top dog in our entire city, we were possibly the only ones with it in the country, but some Manila kid probably got one before us.
I love the part when you said "the smell reminds me of my sister's car"... Her car did smell really nice. I got fond memories of it as well. Nostalgia!! Tell her Clint said Hi (she'll remember)
Still waiting on DDE to give away that Type R. Also, anyone remember the Intergra Type R from the NFS Underground intro? The one with the wide body kit and Samurai Vinyl that was Orange/red and white.
I am the former owner and have known Dave for years. They said it is too complicated to do a giveaways since it is a still registered as a Canadian car. They may consign it at August Motorcars.
i graduated high school in 2000 - near Vancouver, BC. There were 3 chinese kids that had these - from what i recall: 2 yellow and 1 creme... i had a prelude at the time. memories.
No, people did not know how good it was in the 90s, when it came out. They realized how good it was early 2000s when it was no longer in production. That's why these cars are known for the used and aftermarket market
@@joosunkmybattleship In the US maybe, everywhere else the car was a legend the second it rolled off the factory floor :) They were notorious, for various reasons, back in their day. Firstly, because other "fast car" owners used them for gatekeeping in the street-racing scene. "Can it beat a Type-R" was a question often asked. There was, however, a bad side to all of it.... due to the weight-cutting (which my main man in the videos doesn't even mention, my DC2 was 1010 kilos without the spare in the back, which is insane) if you crashed this beauty at any nasty speed, yikes.....
@@MrEquinoxParadox dang I did not know that these cars were respected since day one outside of the US. I wished the US did so the market would still be here. But yeh we know these cars as mini coffins in a car crash as well hahaha
I think he is absolutely correct about it being under appreciated because it is a front wheel drive. The fact that it is a front wheel drive always comes up in a conversation with mechanics and/or gear heads. You just can not efficiently put down more then 300-350ft/lbs of torque to the ground for racing applications (I mean proper racing not straight line or turning in one direction like a confused dog). I mean racing tracks that can be very technical like Laguna Seca or Monte Carlo. There is a reason why the best of the best race cars are mid engine rear wheel drive (least driveline parasitic loss & simple efficient weight distribution in short). Hence the NSX and even the new Corvette. Also there is an exciting and very challenging reason why there is front engine rear wheel drive race cars. I love the blend of engineering and skill that it takes for these car to become legendary race cars. You know a good RWD chassis when they’re used frequently in professional drifting (ex BMW 3 series chassis, 240/Silvia, current mustang, Dodge Viper, Miata, 350/G35 etc). Some of my fav racing to watch is the Supercars Championship in Australia (Aussies know how to shred). But my fav of all time is either old school group B rally or old school touring cars.
We had the Accord Type R over here in the UK. Literally is just a 5 door version of the Integra Type R. Slightly less focused on pure performance but a lot more practical :) And for the US viewers, the older ones are coming close to being 25 years old.
The Type R is an amazing car from the past. Even stock they were amazing. Time has moved on though. I know people will lust for this car but at 80,000 there’s plenty of better cars to own.
So don't get one of the fresh from the factory, bone stock, flawless and never driven models. These are one step short of just being a museum piece. Used ones aren't even a quarter of that price. These aren't for you, they are for collectors and will be used pretty much exclusively as show cars or just slapped in a garage.

The Integra Type R was underappreciated? Either I've been living in an alternate dimension for the last 20 years or donut is running out of ideas.

Funny story: when I clicked on this video, an Acura Ad played right before the video started and I was like, "hmm... how convenient is that?" lmfao
Acura’s ads remind me of a washed up prom king who never shuts up about that time they made the game winning pass their senior year.
They might as well just say:
Guys remember the first-gen NSX we first started making about 20 years ago? Please remember that when you buy our shitty bloated SUVs and our average sedans. You could go for our overcomplicated new NSX that shares almost no characteristics with the original! Wait what, you want a new Integra? Why? You want us to make a new Legend? But why would you want something good like that silly?

Love this car, along with the 99-00 civic si. This was such a great era for Japanese cars. They were simple and effective, even though the new type r civic is cool it’s just got way to much going on. Honda really nailed it with these cars.
The '99 Si is just sick. I bought a Eclipse GSX instead due to F&F but regret it still to this day. Was a hardcore Mitsubishi fan back then. What happened to that company? Honda also had the see till sexy AF Prelude as well.
I agree, while I'd still love to have the new civic type r.... The late 90s style and simplicity still holds the trophy for me.
The styling on the new ctr is not for everyone but it's better looking in person.... I agree about the 90s era jdm cars tho
My all time favorite! Simple, but mind blowing technology. Light weight, but just the right creature comforts. Modular as heck, but you could run all Honda components and have an awesome car.

Cant forget that the Integra competes neck to neck with the RX-7,if both driven well
I know! I couldn't finish NFS Underground with the R34 and changed to the ITR (but not the samurai one) which was programmed to be slower but much nimbler. It cought my attention and led to a real championship white one being bought two years after.
It was my fave car in that game as well, for endgame I'd go for a miata tho.
save a dying culture and rebuild the NFSU Integra! If thats too much to handle just get a stock one as summer daily. Its not more expensive compared to a regular car

The type R is great but the GS-R is such a sleeper and doesn’t get any recognition but sooner or later low mileage clean ones will go for top dollar
BrawlFreak786 trust me... there’s absolutely nothing sleeper about a gsr. It was the number one stolen car on the planet. Also no such thing as a low mile gsr either.
GSR engine is awesome, I wish there were more GSR's still around
Prices already going up on those.
Integra gsr, (G)rand (S)port (R)acing, is a "sleeper"? Wtf?😂

now in 2020 i still regret it. One of the best cars ever made, quality wise although my fav part was the driving position.. the way the dash extends to you and how sharp the steering wheel is with having tiny hand ring made it feel like a ferrari when driving.
My friend used to have a GSR, and even that thing was fast!
I was working at grocery store when I was young & my friend walked in and showed me his white 2000 Integra outside , then next week it got stolen ! He had everything in that integra , purple HID lights, waxed the car , cool rims.

@@joosunkmybattleship In the US maybe, everywhere else the car was a legend the second it rolled off the factory floor :) They were notorious, for various reasons, back in their day. "this thing has a pretty good amount of space in it, considering it's a 'luxury vehicle' " did hon- acura make him say that???
