10 Days of Rain! Homestead Chores + Clean With Me | Building a Lean To Hay Feeder for the Sheep!

We have about 4-6 wks before our 1st snowfall & there's still quite a few things we have to get done around the homestead. Pretty soon everything will be covered in a blanket of snow which makes everything a little more difficult. We're finally getting to the lean to that we need for the sheep pasture to cover their hay from the outside elements.
Though we're facing 10 days of rain in our area of Alaska, we're still gettin' it done! Clean with me + I'm baking homemade blueberry & orange bread with our fresh wild Alaskan blueberries we picked this summer! Thanks for joining us for another day in the life (DITL) video! Cheers...

BLUEBERRY-ORANGE BREAD RECIPE:
Ingredients:
2 cups all purpose flour (I use Einkorn flour)
1 tsp baking pwdr
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup softened butter
3/4 granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1TBS orange zest
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup fresh, frozen or dried blueberries
1/2 cup walnuts (optional)
1. Preheat oven to 350. Butter a 8X4 loaf pan.
2. Combine flour, baking pwdr, & salt in a medium-size bowl. Set aside.
3. Beat butter & sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy.
4. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well.
5. Stir in orange zest, orange juice, milk, and vanilla.
6. Stir flour mixture into butter mixture, just until dry ingredients are moistened. (Do not over mix).
7. Fold in berries & walnuts. Spoon batter into prepared pan.
8. Bake 55-60 minutes or until center is dry when tested with a wooden pick. (Add 5 to 10 min if using frozen berries). Cool in pan 10 minutes, remove loaf & transfer to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!

Those sheds are a great asset, great for the hay. Kellen is having the best childhood, watching and learning with Joe and Tina. Having Parker for a big brother is amazing! I can totally understand Kellan’s enthusiasm about hanging out with Joe.
He used to be cooped up in an appartement with mom & grandma, now he gets to be doing outdoor stuff.

The first half of the video (first day) I only saw Kellen working with Joe and I didn't see Parker! I was happy he is included in the second half. Parker has great ideas and he is also very helpful as Kellen is and a great role model! I hope Kellen will get to stay with your family!

You have such a cute home. Your new bedroom off the back will give you much needed storage space. I imagine next summer you will have a lot of food to preserve from your garden. Maybe! The addition to the sheep shelter is going to be very nice. Joe, you can do anything as far as I can see on here. Kellen is certainly a polite young boy as is Parker. have a good one for you, one of my professors in pharmacy school bought some sheep, the purpose was to keep his ground from overgrowing, one day he noticed they were dirty, and he bathed and used detergent to clean them. in a little while it rained, and rained, and the sheep got cold and all died on him. being a pharmacy professor he understood why, the lanolin in their wool kept them dry, as it shed the water, and this is a true story.

Two things I think when I see this update. Kellen seems to be getting taller, slimming down. It's better that dead tree got knocked down now than with the snow.
As a kid growing up in 4-H and FFA ( I’m only 26). I use to go visit a family who showed cows and goats and eventually I started showing as well. They lived on a dairy and I admired the lifestyle, it’s what inspired me to become a farmer today. I learned so much, saw so much, went many places that were of interest that my family wouldn’t have lol and got to be around a lot of skilled individuals and people with the same interest on different levels . A new world opened but also it gave culture and a skill that is “not common” IYKYK 😂😅 Great to see .. It takes a village 💪🏽💪🏽

Tina, what a woman!! Cleans the house, bakes bread, shifts hay, lumber and rubbish and the way you swung onto that old bbq up into the recycle bin…..you remind me of my wife and my mother, both very “roll your sleeves up and get into it” women. You and Joe have the place looking great and kudos to the boys as well, great little helpers with terrific work ethic. On a different note, are you ever worried that a bear will get the sheep?
It’s always a possibility. But I think with the dogs always running around it’s a good deterrent. And our cabin is right next to the sheep pasture and we usually hear when anything is going on. Predators are a reality anywhere you live. If it becomes an issue then we’ll handle it but so far no bears.☺️
