    This made me think: what if most people had no idea that there were "types" of dragon? How many dragons do they normally see? Probably one their entire lives. Would be cool to have them totally oblivious of the presence of a dragon society and never know that some are kind or wise. In fact i would prefer that

      Though I wonder can a Dragon find value in something that isn't treasure per say, but is of a very high personal and familiar value. Like a knife passed down from wood cutter to wood cutter, it may be worthless to anyone not of that linage but it values more than gold to those who it is passed to.

    There is one notable bronze dragon in a published D&D adventure that I can think of:
    On the 18th level of Undermountain, Vanrakdoom, dwells an adult bronze dragon named Glyster who was somehow changed into a shadow dragon by the powers of the evil goddess Shar. However, intrepid players who find relics that remind him of his old friend Vanrak Moonstar may yet give him the will to change back...

    I put a bronze dragon into a lake next to ruined castle PCs conquered. He was sleeping there for about 100 years and now was awoken to world where his humanoid friends were dead and kingdom they established together felt into disrepair and under tyrannical rule of an usurper, while PCs have rightful heir to throne with them - a boy of 14. What will happen now? I have no idea, ended the session with a dragon-appearing cliffhanger, but am looking forward to it! Your video was very inspiring :) thank you.

      Amaroth Suggestion: he wil recognize the rightful heir and ask players for information. Then he has old business to attend to, but gives them a quest before he leaves. This will give the players a powerful ally, but not an OP NPC who steals their spotlight. The dragon might respect the party over time after they show their quality as lawful good humans rebuilding the settlement. Then he will make then earn money for him. As a dragon he is greedy and after some time the players may betray him at the end.

    I played a character who befriended a sentient sword containing the soul of a Bronze dragon. Was obsessed with defeating evil, and learning about nature, so kept casting Animal Friendship on things we encountered... he also argued constantly with other sentient sword I was carrying with contained a demon (it was a quest item, and I was carrying so that no one would use it or handle it until we could destroy it)... was a lot of fun

    Had a couple of campaigns where I played a bronze dragons, usually one in hiding as a human. Had one in a 3.5 campaign where our palidan took me as his bonded mount then he went into the Dragon Rider prestige class lol. In Pathfinder played a bronze dragon in hiding as a human Ranger who had his hoard/territory taken by a larger and older Black dragon and had to go into hiding to avoid death and to bide his time to take it back. He wore a special cursed amulet that basically turned him into a human in almost every aspect. Basically he is Kalecgos from Warcraft in this aspect lol, except he willingly wearing the cursed object.

  • @AzraelThanatos

    You know, one thing that is an interesting option is to have the dragon learn how investment works with their centuries long plans at times.
    One knowing that it could make a lot of gold from a trade city, and their lawful nature would only help there. While the council runs the city for him, the dragon protects the city and has a major say in things. He set it up centuries ago and layers in underwater caverns that crisscross under the island (an extinct volcano).
    He gets a pretty hefty payment from the city in the form of taxes inside it, where 5-10% adds up quite quickly with little effort because he'd rarely be needed to do things there.
    Add other business opportunities such as shipping and the like that involve the same city, and it becomes an engine for producing gold for the dragon with little to no effort...
    Hell, what wizard or archivist worth their salt is going to not be willing to attend a dinner or the like with the ruler of a massive city with a known interest in magic, which could make for additional draws for a spellhording dragon or even a riddled one (old templates for dragons from Dragon magazine stuff).
    On top of that, there is the basic thing of a dragon running a museum...both because a lot of wealthy people will just give him some of their gold just to see choice pieces of his horde and some adventurers might even give him valuable artifacts just to be put on display. It's a win/win scenario for him...
    Bronze and Steel dragons are the two that fit it the most for that kind of setup in turning the monsterous ruler setup for a city.

    I've always thought of Bronze, Silver, Brass and Copper to be the "Human" dragons. As in, they are the ones who interact the most with humanity. I would assume that would also give them ample opportunities to either love, or hate humans to an extreme degree. This is where good dragons become evil imo. I can easily see a Bronze Dragon perhaps turning to Hextor as a patron deity after too much contact with corrupt humans over the centuries.

    *Draco Rigidus Frigidus* - "Dragon of Stiff Frost" (White)
    *Draco Causticus Sputem* - "Dragon of Burning Saliva" (Black)
    *Draco Chlorinus Naseous Respiratorum* - "Dragon of Sickening Chlorine Breath" (Green)
    *Draco Electricus* - "Dragon of Amber" (Blue; the Latin root for electricity is "electrum", or amber)

    *Draco Impudentus Gallus* - "Impudent Rooster Dragon" (Brass)
    *Draco Comes Stabuli* - "Dragon Constable/Stable Master" (Copper; possibly a pun on "cop" lol)
    *Draco Gerus Bronzo* - "Dragon of the Bronze Voice" (Bronze)
    *Draco Nobilis Argentum* - "Noble Silver Dragon" (Silver)
    *Draco Orientalus Sino Dux* - "Oriental Chinese Dragon Guide" (Gold; Gygax told me he wanted ALL the Metallic Dragons to look Asian after I pointed out how European the Silver and to a lesser extent the Bronze Dragons looked....Maybe this was his way of compensating?

      Back in the last days of AD&D2ndE my game shop ran young green dragons in a way that they try to con young human wizards into Polymorph Other them into human form so they can .. see .. how fun human life can be.
      Plot points we had in game, ..
      a.) Older wizard polymorph a young female green dragon into a redhead woman to teacher her some .. manners. First off she complain her hair should be .. green .. and not fire red. Ended up the woman that PC the dragon socially toke over the castle town with her bickering charms. Then male green dragons shown up to court her and other females came to challenge her for control of the town.
      b.) Since green dragons are known to maintain close social family contact with each other, they ran like a mafia.
      Taking from humans is a game to see which group will offer .. gifts/ bribes .. to keep from being raided.
      Green dragon, " I carved out a few new water ditches, a pit which will fill up a as pond due to the rain shed effect, and clawed up a few acres so you can grow more grain to brew beer. Now this is what I want so I don't eat the local road bandits and cattle herd raiders that are your kinfolk."
      Running or letting other players run dragon PC has never been a problem with me or my pass two game shops.
      As a mini campaign or plot, if the players PCs are at a tournament, joust, melee .. have a few young adult dragons show up to watch and slap each other around for social status ranking. Allow the players to roll the dice of bronze dragons vs green dragons. Or greens vs greens.
      Dragons get bored and want some entertainment and get their name/ fame out where humans/ people talk about how great each one is.
      2.) Green Dragon, " Listen, .. I know most of you think me a monster .. which I may very well be. But .. for 10gp I will fly you around for a few miles in a circle around the town and not drop you to your death. Since there are a few thousand of you humans being here I could pull off a hundred take off and glide in landings. Just sing how great I am and feed me a cow along with a few pigs. So unless there is a wizard here giving flying carpet rids ... Who wants to go first ?"

    Pushing players 60 foot back is huge.
    Strange you could be pushed back in an instance a greater distance than you could run, and you don’t even fall prone though? Pushing 60 feet and falling prone would be far more appropriate. Like the famous Unrelenting Force Shout from skyrim. Your players might meme that it’s a “Fus roh dah” and play Skyrim if you want to know how to use it.
    combat a target with the fly spell who has a speed of 60 knocking them 60 feet and out of the sky, would be very interesting, suddenly barbarians can’t fight a dragon just cause they can fly
    It will be most useful in combination with environmental hazards. Could a dragon lower it’s head to the ground and launch you upward at an angle? Add an extra d6 or two to your fall damage? If you’re launched off the ground or off a cliff does momentum carry you further? If you hit a solid object 5 feet behind you does it shatter your spine? Probably.
    Consider walls with spikes and floors with pits, spiral stair cases head hight the dragon can stand under and blow people upward. And difficult terrain. Nothing like being 110 feet away and prone in difficult terrain.
    Shame it goes off the same resource as lightning breath though

  • @gmacwizard8890
    @gmacwizard8890 6 лет назад +6

    In my mind if food metaphor is a very chromatic way of thinking if thing for 3 reasons. A what the dragon does with the treasure (just putting it in a big pile and sitting on it) isn't anymore more valid than what a human does. he doesn't some much eat the food as he well...puts it in a big pile and sits on it. B the dragon really has no claim to the treasure he didn't make the coins and magic items he steals and has done nothing to earn them if he wants his own gold he can get a pickaxe and dig it out of the ground like the rest of us. If he wants to eat he can make his own dinner he's a big boy he shouldn't have to steal from others. And C most Metallic dragons should know a alliance with a prosperous humanoid kingdom will pay off in the long run a king only lives 70 years or so while dragons live much longer and can make long term plans beyond the scope of human lifespans for gains of massive wealth and more valuable than that the influence they gain for their services over the generations of kings. It is better to make friends with the people who make good food instead of just killing them for it.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад +6

      Dragons are known to sit on the treasure for very long periods of time and not need to eat at all while doing so, they are creatures with a partly elemental metabolism that derive more from the metal than a comfortable bit of furniture. In many instances in story and articles, dragons absorb gemstones and metal into their body over time, increasing the durability and resistance of their scales.

    • @gmacwizard8890
      @gmacwizard8890 6 лет назад +2

      AJ Pickett I suppose I would counter by saying gold is historically one of the hardest substances to dissolve or digest and not very tough physically so it wouldn't make good body armor when compared to other metals like tungsten. Gems stones I could kinda see but at that point why not just eat plants and animals for their carbon and chromium. Also then what did dragons eat before the mortal races could dig gold and treasure out of the ground?

    • @thedarkmaster4747
      @thedarkmaster4747 6 лет назад +3

      gmac MacWilliam Gold is a super conductor, priecious minerals are precious because they are both rare and have multiple uses. The amount of uses would only be amplified in a universe that is saturated in magic. We harden our bones with calcium. And the dragons are magically drawing these elements into themselves even if they are actually physically eating the treasure, in a said universe. Kobalts come in all colours. Dragons have always been sorcerers... Dragons have always been served.

    I dont know what it was that you said but it inspired me to have dragons instead of stealing/hording treasure they shit/shed precious metals.
    A gold dragon would shit gold and molt a full skin of gold. green dragons would do the same with emerald or some version of green precious metal you invent. same with each color of dragon. the treasure in their hordes is from adventurers coming to slay them for the precious waste. the loot they have is then not interesting to the dragon so loot and treasure allso accumulates in its lair in and around the moltings and droppings.

      @@AJPickett OH! Cant believe I caught ur eye Haha. And true that's a definite but I'm making a dnd world for my friends and I, and well one place was gunna be a big dragon influence. I was considering having two important draconian figures have offspring and well maybe one or two instead of being a spilt between the two, there would be one or 2 that's a whole unique kind/type. Figured they wouldn't be treated to kindly but was seeing if I can fish for more detailed ideas lol
