My aunt introduced me to D&D back in the late 70's. I didn't start playing until the early 80's until I was old enough to add my own dice and have a better understanding of things. It was 1986 when I started to Dungeon Master for my own group of friends, as I had a vast understanding of the game at that point, being around my aunts friends who where all veteran players, and my Uncle who was the DM. I enjoy your channel very much AJ Pickett! Keep up the good work, and keep inspiring new and old like myself into this wonderful game!
Great video. I used these demons to serve an evil minor god who wanted to claim "Lord of the Flies" from Beelzebub. When the players discovered that they were serving as agents of Beelzebub against the minor evil god, they had a morality crisis. One entire session was the players (in character) discussing a "lesser of the two evils" thing. That inspired me to write more and expand the story. It was originally planned as a cliffhanger mission, ended up being a compelling story one.
I picture chasme demons flying around the abyss pressganging demons into their army. However they do not care if those demons are poached from another chasme's troops or in those "demons' are explorers from other planes or injured or straggling opponents.
Power rules. I imagine it is the norm for demons to change sides casually unless the demon lords in question are actively at war. For beings as chaotic as them how can it be otherwise?
Love the Shin Megami Tensei Beelzebub at 8:25. Always a fun boss fight, but particularly nasty in Devil Survivor. Always injecting eggs into your characters that hatch into annoying fly enemies, and usually dealing lethal damage in the process.
A slight correction/enhancement: the chasme that was summoned by Phourkyn One-Eye was was actually bonded to him. What’s even crazier is that Phourkyn One-Eye wasn’t even Phourkyn One-Eye! He was a sun dragon, in human disguise as a morally questionable wizard of Thentia, with a bonded chasme that lived inside its chest!!!! He could send it forth at will to do his bidding, and any sort of Banishment spell wouldn’t work, because his “home plane” was wherever the dragon was. A truly wild series that, even though I’ve exposed one small storyline, is so amazing and full of surprises that I’ve read it many times over. The Year of Rogue Dragons by Richard Lee Byers.
Actually, its quite weird that there are no fly-like devils in base D&D at all, with such a strong archetype as Beelzebub. I say "base D&D" because Pathfinder has Zebubs, or Fly Devils: its the fly-putto thing which can be seen in 10:10 . I think that they fit incredibly well with the esthetic feel of D&D's Beelzebub realm of Maladomini - a further perversion of the wonders of art, just like the incomplete and ruined cities of the layer are.
They are both fiends. Demons may have started as alien invaders, but in a way they have naturalized. Just as Devils started as celestial beings that then had to adjust to the demands of containing the abyss. In mindset devils have more in common with celestials but in flesh they are ever growing closer to demons. Perhaps one day the two will join to some degree. Although I think not. Their politics are simply too different. I can see one dominating the other, but not coming to a mutual understanding. And such dominance would likely be the devils. And it would be constantly under threat of rebellion.
All right I lied, I decided to watch. These guys aren't the best of company, it would seem. (I probably wouldn't be able to handle the smell, based on how you describe it.)

Hey AJ, just had an idea. How about demons having "families"? That is while even within a demonic type there is a lot of variance they tend to vary within set forms. Like for the casme maybe there are mosquitoe kinds, biting fly kinds, carrion eater fly kinds, ect. With difference in kind being a difference in personality which is further accented by the whims of Abyssal chaos? But make this fact be a secret most don't know as to study demons in detail is risky at the best of times and the sheer variance the abyss allows makes it hard to properly codify these patterns while fleeing for your life and soul!
@AJPickett and have devils be very smug when a mortal is surprised there are such groupings within demon types. "Oh, only just noticing XYZ, huh? That is elementary learning back in the legion".
Was Vaakul a bigger fool to accept the spider's invitation, or is the price of two chasme forelimbs equal to a solicitation from a dirty talking priestess of Lolth? .. Don't call me Vaakul. Call me Fly Daddy.
I would side with you, but at a disadvantage. I would say both are sound based but the droning isn't really a song, particularly one a mortal can understand without going mad.
A lot of demons seem to have a Chitin skin that is resistant to Magic and normal damage I wonder if you could adapt it and make armor or Shields from it
linguistically oversight 86 Are there beings on the material plane who might make a business of going into the Abyss in order to "harvest" mid level demons? I could maybe see a mature red dragon and an efreeti with maybe a duergar as a front man making a killing in the Underdark. I could see him shouting "today only, 1/2 price on chasme scale armor, also keep your spider monsters loyal with our chasme maggot jerky. We got a fresh supply in today!". The quest ideas from that situation almost write themselves.
@@mrl9418 That could be a good idea. Maybe the chitin is only good for magic resistance if it is removed surgically while the chasme alive and awake. One can imagine that vrock and other lesser demons would be happy to provide live chasme in exchange for live humans or for a discount on armor for themselves.
I... don't know if that's really all that good of an idea. Call me a superstitious sod if you like, but I can't imagine that being in close proximity to _anything_ from the Abyss for an extended period of time is very healthy.

I think you're pretty well mistaken here in what the classes are representative of. Sure someone can be a world renowned physicist and a grand master in karate but those people are incredibly rare. On average most humans are successful because they choose to specialize. Classes are important from a role-playing perspective as they give a key archetype for what your character focuses his resources on. You can only have so much time and money to spend on learning and perfecting a skill and it's even harder if it's something you're not naturally suited to. I think the Pathfinder style systems handle it best when it comes to skills. Anyone can learn a skill like sleight of hand but by default a rogue will be better at it than a barbarian with less time spent studying it because it fits into their natural and learned skills that they use in their day to day life. Anyone could theoretically become an NBA player but someone who is naturally tall and athletic as well as spent a good chunk of his life practicing is more likely to reach that level of skill than someone without those same advantages.
Pazuzu is a favorite demon of mine, so I would always include a Chasme and Vrock as his minions.
