  • Responding to a recent statement made by Open AI founder Sam Altman, IIT-Madras Director V Kamakoti said that India has more important issues to address than worry about fancy technology. He said, 'There are many more problems to be solved in India than ChatGPT. There are two types of computations, one is the fancy computation and the other is computation for solving real world problems. Forget what others have to say, I am talking about what India truly needs. India today needs well trained manpower in every field of engineering with a system thinking.'
In an interview with ThePrint's Soniya Agrawal, the legacy IIT director also spoke about recent student suicides and mental health problems plaguing the campus. He said that through student surveys they had zeroed down on four issues as primary stress points-- personal, health, competition and financial issues. He also highlighted the student grievance redressal mechanism brought about by the institution.
The director also spoke about the progress that IIT Madras has made in setting up its Tanzania campus. Watch the full interview.

7:30 sam altman did not said Indian startup can't make out of chatgpt. In response of "Can we make a model like chat gpt", he said you can try to make model similar to chatgpt, but you will fail.....something like this. He said is kind of true because as of now they have trained their forth model i.e GPT4 and anyone want to start making models like that then it would not be able to catch up with open ai since it has already grown in a very big company also the data input it has now due to public release of chatgpt.

We can just build on any open source model, Llama 3 is coming, Gemma as well, even Open Ai was open source, used the collective power of the civilization's best minds and went closed source

Instead of blaming Gandhi and Nehru the govt should have set up 90 IITs in the last 9 years 100 for 10 years. The professor need to be respected and appreciated as IIT Madras made us proud as one of the best institutions in the country. India is respected by its professional brilliance mainly the rarest of rare breeds coming out of IITs and IIMs.

😅😂, they did add more IITS, but you expect congress to add 7 IITS in 70 years and 100 IITS from the BJP in 10 years only. Double standards

Looks interesting yet peculiar proposition of the so called media forums interviewing Premier institutes based on ultra localised nirf ratings!! Though the interview covers some of the aspects around the educational courses, the importance of the so called data science, the internationalization of the education aspect, top level scratching on the suicide aspect etc but missed out detailing the lack of onus on research and impact, the cross collaboration amongst geographies such as EU US with active student programs with culture of exchange, the real reasons for the suicide vis caste the impetus of practical learning in terms of real time on AI and addressing other unaddressed issues such as dip in employment even in prestigious institutes which were not even touched at limited level!!

Hope the institution makes an active effort in making student life better. Prior to this (especially during the Covid waves), IITM was terrible in handling various student-related issues.

the main problem which needs to be addressed is that caste reservation is unnecessary in 2023. it is the main reason why many talented people who had topped competitive exams need to leave the country because they do not get jobs due to their caste

ChatGPT is not the issue to be solved. From his response, he doesn’t seem to understand what it is. AI models and programs are reaching a critical stage where they can be used for much wider applications and can also be misused. While he has other important topics to cover, I wish Dr.Kamakoti took the time to learn the basics before brushing off an important development in technology
