Given how Bruce is himself a criminal for his actions? @@goalsquad8400 Well, Gotham, specifically. Gotham is cursed, it pushes people to extremes. People blame Batman, but no, this was done WAY long ago. If a person actually does their research on the history of Gotham, they'll start to understand why it got so bad. Batman was just a guy who started fighting back against it, inspiring others to do so as well. Batman cleaned up the town, and the only ones who remain are the really corrupted, in body and mind. When you finally understand Gotham, you'll finally throw away that silly notion of "Batman is to blame," because this evil has always been there.
Everyone knows how awesome Alfred is at having Bruce's back as Batman, but Lucius Fox is right there with him. I remember playing the Arkham Asylum game and getting frustrated at why couldn't Batman's scanner open these stupid electronic locks...right up until I saw in the description that they were designed by Lucius Fox. At that point I simply went "fair enough, not getting through this" and went on with my life.
Look: when TDK was over, everyone was celebrating it. Of course guesses started spreading. And for those random ideas to center around The Riddler being the villain in third movie, was I think a logical fan-theory. And it was also clever of Nolan to officially deny it, even before he would've announced to actual villains. "There will be no Mr. Freeze, and no Riddler." That was an intelligent way to build the hype for a third CHris Nolan-Batman-movie without Heath Ledger.
Was a dumbass theory to begin with, didn't buy it at all. Almost as dumb as the idiot who thought that the twins in Matrix Reloaded was one guy who was able two create two entities when he is in the Matrix.
It was a sideways reference, one of the bigger ones. TDK Trilogy is full of little easter eggs like that, many of them just short one-liners that you'll miss if you're not looking for them. Two-Face (eventually happened), Catwoman (eventually happened), The Calculator, Killer Croc, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya (the corrupted cops in TDK), the Riddler here, Robin, possibly even Mr. Freeze, all got little snippets thrown in for them throughout the trilogy.
While of course Morgan Freeman is awesome, I think the guy playing Coleman Reese really sells the scene. (Joshua Harto) Watch his face completely change from arrogant to terrified in reaction to Lucius' little speech. He has no other line until "keep that", which he delivers with a nice deflated thud. That is some fine acting.
+Jon Vokins idk but i think it's been said before that this character was a wink to the riddler (edward nigma), you know how they got down those narcissistic and arrogant features that coleman reese has, but also the way they got down how he would be terrified and scared once batman got his hands on him XD (mr. reese..... mysteries :D)
Morgran Freeman is great as always but this other actor does an amazing job also. The satisfaction in watching this scene depends heavily upon seeing the guy go from the heights of smugness to needing to change his pants in a matter of seconds. And this actor totally sells it.
Definitely must have been questions about Wayne Enterprises funding Batman, but I doubt anyone would think it was Bruce Wayne. They'd think it was some government contract, that Batman is a government agent.
This is just about the best moment in the entire Nolan Batman trilogy. All the action and drama and what have you is exciting, but this quiet little moment stands out as one of the better judo throws in modern cinema. :D
No the best one was when Bruce Wayne fired the CEO during the board meeting he thought was convened to break up the company when in fact all the companies that bought the pieces were owned Bruce Wayne. Epic!
No, I would say it is easily topped when after the Joker puts out a hit on this guy and Bruce saves his life whilst playing dumb about his intentions to the cops. As he is being escorted away, he sees it was Bruce who saved him despite knowing how he was about to reveal Bruce secret identity.
The whole trilogy is absolutely riddled with moments like these, all fantastic and iconic. - Jokers “Why so serious?” - Joker’s conversation with Harvey and the famous improv with the detonator -Joker’s manipulation of the cop for his phone call -Bane’s “Do you feel in charge?” -Unveiling of Gotham PD statue Even the little nod between Alfred and Bruce when it was all over. This trilogy forged the standard to which all other DC movies are compared to
Lucius pulls out a calculator and punches in some equations. He pulls out checkbook and writes on a check. He removes the check from the checkbook, and hands it to Mr. Reese. Mr. Reese reads the amount on the check *$27,400.00* Lucius Fox: *By mycalculations, that gives you about 24 hours.* Mr. Reese gulps in fear and hurries out of the office.
Such a well-acted scene by both men. I really appreciate Freeman's subtle change in demeanor from slightly concerned to the smirk knowing he can handle Reese.
What I loved most about this scene other than Morgan Freeman's reply to Reese is the transition both of them had. Reese comes in so confident and smug while Freeman is taken back of this finding only for it to turn into Reese being taken back and Freeman going confident and smug right back. I absolutely loved Freeman's reply here.
At 0:40 , Reese : What’re you building for him now ? A rocket ship ? Fox : Correct . with autopilot . it’s called the Bat . To let him fly away with a nuclear bomb in the next movie
Indeed. Because the subtext is: "Do you not realise how implausible and ridiculous the notion is? And even if it were true...is this really a good idea?"
Blackmail is so old school Nowadays its more likely someone would anonymously out Batman and then sit there watching the media fallout while jacking off
Morgan Freeman is pure gold in any role he plays. The dude can make you laugh out loud in Bruce Almighty, he can make you think you'll be l die by his hand simply by him saying to you, "Good luck." He's just awesome.
Just because you're smart, doesn't mean you can't be stupid. Edit: Since this comment got a lot of attention, here's a fun fact for you guys. A lot of people have compared Coleman Reese to being a reference to the Riddler. Lucius Fox calls him Mr Reese - or Mysteries. The Riddler is always thwarted by the Batman because he's always so sure that he's smart, so obsessed with being right, that he trips up in stupid, obvious ways. Another reason for my comment. Another thing: the Riddler is one of the very few people who figure out the Batman's secret identity, but never reveals it. Stay safe you guys!
I remember when I first saw this, and I thought it was such a smart, simple and elegant answer to “why doesn’t anybody in Wayne Enterprises finds out he is Batman and tell on him or blackmail him for it?”
Actually everybody knows it for a long time but Wayne Enterprises pays well, have great dental plan and others tought about it and realised just what Mr. Fox just said so they went back to work...
@@jeremywhitfield4556 It is a terrible film. A handful of bad/miscast actors in main roles, Nolan should not have cast the French lady as Talia, Anne Hathaway was not a good fit for Catwoman (whose plotline withers and dies early one but she's still a main focus in the film) several different plotlines mashed together in a unsatisfactory way and has a terrible ending.
+betatalk357 Yeah, the only good thing he can possibly take from this is knowing that his punk ass just got burned by none other than the golden voice of Morgan Freeman. Now THAT'S the way to go.
I remember this is the first comic book movie where the side characters performances really stood out. Freeman and the guy who plays Reese really do a great job.
Batman isn't the only one who knows how to use fear as a tool , his allies are just as terrifying . Also the fun fact Lucius didn't even had to use a fake terrifying voice likes Bruce , he just showed that a calm demeanor with the right words and a smile at the end can be just as terrifying as the real Batman's methods.
Often the secret to being really successful is hiring (and retaining) the right people around you. Having Lucius Fox and Alfred Pennyworth in his employ was virtually PRICELESS in accomplishing his aims. He literally could not become The Batman without these two men. And I might add, older, experienced men.
I mean to have a butler who's former British military/intelligence and a colleague who runs the entire Applied Sciences department of your family's multi-billion dollar company.
Lucius Fox was a close friend of Thomas Wayne and a capable businessman in his own right, when Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered, young Bruce Wayne found himself with ALOT on his plate to deal with. He hand-picked Lucius Fox to be CEO of Wayne Enterprises and it is easily one of the best decisions he ever made. Lucius is very underrated and I'm glad they gave him some respect here.
Bruce can't even become an adult without Alfred. :3 Actually, without Alfred taking care of what a functional adult usually do (cleaning, cooking, etc), Bruce is much like a rich geek who actualized his nightmare.
I like it when directors make the effort to address potential plot holes. Viewers will always ask themselves these kinds of questions, and Nolan answers one of them with a really funny scene.
This is a brilliant scene - both teasing at the danger of Batman's identity being revealed, and at the thoughtlessness of the man attempting to reveal it.
Everyone's praising Morgan freeman's acting in this (and its very well deserved praise) but I'd like to point out that the guy who played mister Reese did a really good job as well

Actually, there's a great lesson learned by the way Freeman's Fox character handles this would-be blackmailer... Listen, keep icy cool, admit to nothing and let the other person discover their grave mistake by even coming to you with such "nonsense"! Gotta love it! :-).
He had everything right. If Fox had only break his expression for a second, Reese had him. But Fox kept his poker face intact and change the entire game
he didn't "kept" his expression. He was fearful at first. It was the nature of the challenge that gave him the upper hand. Reese wasn't neither a worldburner nor a truth crusader, if Reese just went for news and gave the evidence, shit woulded hitted the fan. He just wanted and easy win taking advantage of the situation, and thats EXACTLY the kind of people intimidated by Batman. If Reese didn't blackmailed him, there wouldn't been anything Lucius coulded done.
And it blinded him from realizing that his ambitions were too high. I should've presented himself as an ally of the Bat. Someone who could cover up the numbers. All for the price of a modest raise and the favor of both Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Given how Bruce is himself a criminal for his actions? His interrogation of Flass by yo-yoing him would've been ruled as inadmissible due to Flass being under duress and would say anything to get it to stop.

@@blackjac5000 the whole point of batman is that the legal system was corrupted ad couldn't be relied on, so he took it into his own hands
This is why people don't "find out" batman is Bruce Wayne.

Remember when everyone thought this guy was going to be The Riddler?
"Mr. Reese"
"Mysteries"
Everyone?
It was a sideways reference, one of the bigger ones. TDK Trilogy is full of little easter eggs like that, many of them just short one-liners that you'll miss if you're not looking for them. Two-Face (eventually happened), Catwoman (eventually happened), The Calculator, Killer Croc, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya (the corrupted cops in TDK), the Riddler here, Robin, possibly even Mr. Freeze, all got little snippets thrown in for them throughout the trilogy.
