wow this is beautiful. honored to be a part of it, along with our friend, Puddles!
Here to say that the choice of song is perfect.
Couldn't believe my ears when those first words came in. Great work.
You and John Lewis rock!
Never expected to see both crossover until now.
Beautiful cover on top of of Beautiful Christmas advert.
We'd have to agree 😊 - Wil
Puddles Pity Party 🎉 so good
I’m 13 years old and have been in foster care since I was 10 and this advert really means so much to me because I also came into care around Christmas time and props to John Lewis for showing people this advert we really need more businesses like this❤
Thank you for your kind words @itbedre ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause - Ella 😊
John Lewis you're the best
I’m 13 too and have been in care since I was 7 and totally agree
@@johnlewisretail you're advert has been shortened on TV so not many understand it and you're not bothered?
Please be careful online. People aren't always who they say they are.
As someone who’s been in the care system myself as a child, this really feels close to home. And it did make me shared a tear, that how I know it’s a John Lewis advert. And it does make you think about how powerful adverts can be, even if they are simple and basic
Thanks so much for sharing that with you Christopher, we're proud to be supporting such an important cause - Wil
Your comment didn't make me cry at all I say I wipe a tear away and then another. Sending you love, All the best for Christmas and always ❤️
Nope didn't make me cry at all...sniff, wipes tear away.
Christopher sending you love & light & beautiful blessings ❤

Oh hello! That's me singin'! Wonderful. So heartwarming!!
Great rendition of a Blink182 song. Your voice bought so much emotion to the meaning of the advert. I'm here watching this looking for who sung it. And here you are.
You're amazing 🙌 - Nina
I'm from the care system
This is one of the best Xmas adverts JLP has ever made.
I was very lucky and my foster parents became a huge guiding light in my life.
Well done JLP
Utter rubbish advert
so happy you had them michael ❤
I’m 25 nearly 26 and been in the care system since I was 7.
Seeing ads like this really do make you feel like people care even tho as a care kid it often feels as if they don’t.
Thank you John Lewis, we need more company’s like you
It has nothing to do with anything utter irrelevant trash
Ok, I wasn't expecting to cry when I clicked on this year's John Lewis advert.
But people always cry on a John Lewis Christmas ad!
As a foster parent (albeit in the U.S.) the one thing this advert did really well was the exchange that occurs when you first meet a child at the door of your house.
They didn’t pretend that it’s a huge moment full of hugs and immediate affection from the child. The vaguely awkward smile and nod as the girl entered the house along with the kind of nervous energy from the foster parents was perfectly done and really resonated with me.
Yes I adored that, subtle raw and honest x
Yes as a social worker I concur
The little girl’s face was what really got me in the feels 🥲
It's true.
It's never like how the movies portray adoption. Never a burst through the door and immediately you're part of the family.
Sometimes it takes a bit to adjust. But finding something you can both click with is a great step to making a house a home for someone in a care system.
I'm a foster carer in the UK and you're right. In a way there's not much you can do to comfort a child in that moment - I had a very stable and and secure childhood myself and the very thought of arriving at some strangers doorstep as my new home would have been utterly horrifying. And a lot of these kids have been in that exact place multiple times. Time is the only thing that heals, and trust.
Christmas spirit is in this advert. Many don't have that luxury of having families and big parties. This is showing you someone elses Christmas; a reality you're not contending with if it didn't 'hit the spot'. It's safe to say, it connected with people if you can put yourself in somebody elses shoes - even at Christmas. This is really what it's about. Not the food or material gifts. Love.
We're glad you felt the Christmas spirit in our ad this year 🎄 We're very proud to be supporting such an important cause ❤️ -Sara

Been in the foster care system myself, and was approved as a foster carer myself this week along with my wife. Exciting times ahead and such a fitting advert! Well done John Lewis for bringing this to attention.
Good luck - you'll be amazing with all that personal experience.
Yeah!!! Go you! Being a foster carer is so tough sometimes but so amazing and rewarding and everything else as well. When you have kids placed with you and your wife, they are going to be so blessed by the love you can give them.
I think with the state of the nation at the moment, John Lewis captured the magic of the small things being important.. not big budget adverts and gifts.
This is a perfect advert in this economic climate. No over flowing food tables and towers of presents under the tree. It's all about the people and society. Very well thought through John Lewis you have an excellent team that nails it every year 👏
We’re touched Sarah, thank you for your kind words. ❤️ 🙌😊 -Sil
@@rgw5991 This will surprise No One. Their brand screams toxicity.
Thank the gods you got yourself away from them. That is horrifying, you should have taken them up.
They are virtue signalling, no good capitalists.
I bought a feather duvet off them once as EVERYWHERE else was sold out. It was garbage.
I detest these xmas pr stunts, although I do feel most people don't like the brand so they will be gone before long.
Agreed! Most people’s Christmases don’t include long tables overflowing with food tbh - what about those of us in small, terraced houses? Also, literally what family has EVERYONE for dinner all at once?! We’ve never done that, it would just be too much and nobody has a house big enough! Even the family members with large-ish houses!
Huge thank you to John Lewis team for raising awareness of foster care and presenting such a real and inspirational Christmas Ad! Foster Care is definitely a life journey for all involved. 🥰
Thank you so much. We're very proud to support such an important cause this Christmas and beyond ❤️ -Sara
Real? As a former foster child, this isn't real. This isn't how it works. Especially at Christmas
@@autumnlennox-monroe3136 yeah the way they portray it still seems like it's glammed up
@@autumnlennox-monroe3136 Fortunately it is for some.
@@jillosler9353 not at Christmas it isn't. Christmas placements are emergency placements which usually mean there's trauma involved and there sure as hell isn't enough time to learn anything about the kid let alone learn to skate for them
This hits home really hard, as a former Foster kid who was in the system for 11 years..its really heartwarming to see this. 🥰🥰 Thank you to everyone involved in making this years advert and highlighting the efforts of those wonderful families who take on children from every sort of background and who do their upmost to give them a comfort home.
My baby girl came this way at 7 and she is still my baby at 40. Time to take care of our children!
As someone with a background in Social Work, thank you for this. The festive period is the hardest part of the year for so many children and young adults in the care system. They don't need flashy presents, they just want to feel seen, safe and protected, like every other child in the world. Xxx
Thank you for your kind words, Em ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause. Merry Christmas 🎄 - Petra
Very good - no bandwagon jumping - no trying demonise a group , any group . A normal average bloke having a heart and kids in need 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Bandwagon jumping? What are you on about?
@@Sardonic_Siren I don't know but I can feel one rolling my way soon.
@@Sardonic_Siren He’s talking about companies finding what’s the big thing that everyone’s talking about and trying to hitch their band wagon to it rather than just trying to express sentiment. Thought it was obvious.
Love the depiction of a normal bloke being a good person.
@@RoyKoopaling she knows what hes talking about. She just wants him to say the wrong thing so she can have a go at him and claim the moral high ground.
I'm a loving father of two boys and this made me shed a tear. At a time when men seem to be the target of such negativity, I appreciated the characterisation of a man trying to do their best for those they love. Inspirational and this will raise the awareness of the much needed care system here in the UK.
Thanks JL
Well said, Kyle. Keep being a good man ♂️
Bang in Sir. Lots of men try hard.
What a lovely comment 😊
Very well said 🙏
Having never experienced the care system I have never known what its like to have all your belongings in 1 bag & walking into a strangers home. I can only imagine how scary it is, the not knowing what it's going to be like when the door closes.
Can only praise John Lewis for this advert, for bringing awareness at this time of year for the children in the care system.
From someone who grew up in foster care from the age of 6 weeks old. I thank you for raising awareness 🙏🏽
Thank you for your kind words Sean ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause. Ashlé
What a wholesome and moving comment section. So nice to read the comments for a change
Finally, an advert which shows the importance of love, Care and families and not about rushing around buying presents. Christmas is about so much more than giving material gifts. Well done John Lewis! A reminder to why me and my family have been loyal customers for years on end. 🎉
Thank you Ramy for the lovely words 😊 Sometimes it's the things we do that mean the most ❤️ -Sara
I have to applaud this, and wipe a tear away. I lost my mum two years ago this Christmas, my dad followed her just a few months later. Seeing this proud man trying to help a lost young girl to feel loved and wanted when she needs it most breaks and mends my heart. Well done. This is what we need at Christmas
I spent 3 years in care and this advert really moved me. So many kids in the system feel so forgotten and isolated at Christmas. Hopefully this raises awareness and lets them know people do care
This is a great representation of a parent who would do anything to welcome a foster kid, who has had a rough life. Nice work John Lewis, this is much better than 2021!
I'm a foster parent in the USA and have relatives and friends who have fostered in the UK. I also have several cousins, plus my own children, who entered our family through the foster care system. Supporting foster care (and either reunification with bio parents or permanency with new forever families) is one of the the BEST things we can do to impact society for good, not to mention immeasurably improve the lives of all involved. Thank you, John Lewis, for putting your Christmas advert resources towards this.
I didn't know John Lewis sold onions; I'm not crying, you are!
This made me cry I am a foster carer I think every day of the children who don’t get help THANK YOU JOHN LEWIS FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE NEED FOR MORE FOSTER CARER
Difficult times....
JL judged the mood appropriately...... Well done !
I was in and out of foster care my whole life. Cried so much, thank you for bringing awareness to us.
As a foster carer This is a nice representation to remind people the daunting effect the first meeting the impact it has on a child walking into a home, no smiles no bubbly feeling and to remind people out there that there are so many needy children who want safety, genuine care love and stability to excel to be the best they can be for themselves and in society. Thank you JLP
Thank you for your kind words Pearl ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause - Ella
The young female playing the Ellie did it so well. Hugging her skateboard, as though it was her most treasured possession, and I love her little glance up to her care worker as she goes into the house - still not sure.
Often the best way to show emotion in acting is to do it understated. Like, you say, Pearl, she's not bubbly and smiley.
I was in care after losing both parents! Love that John Lewis is supporting such a great cause
I wasn't expecting the ending. This brought tears to my eyes. To every foster parent out there, THANK YOU for opening your hearts and homes to children who need security and love.
Who has placed fresh chopped onions in my office!?!? What a lovely message.
I’ve been in care myself and this was so touching & really showed the lengths people will go to try and help a child feel more settled & belonging. It was such a touching & thoughtful advert ❤
This is what ads should always be like! I actually watched a whole ad for once without skipping. Well done John Lewis and Partners.
My friend posted a comment on Facebook about how if you didn’t think it was Christmassy enough then you need to watch it again.
Well I’m cutting onions here. We were foster carers for nearly 8 years. When our young person came to live with us he was 12. I “won” brownie points because I could sing/rap along to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air titles… 😂😂
His first Christmas with us he couldn’t believe that he didn’t have to “earn” his presents. They were for him because we (and our families) wanted to give them to him. Just because.
I love it. ❤
Oh my, this is arguably my favourite Christmas John Lewis ad so far. Subtle, sweet and yet so sad.
Plus, a melancholy version of 'All the Small Things'.
Just wow!
We’re touched, thank you for your kind words -Sil
As someone who fosters and our child came to live with us just before christmas. This felt close to home for me too and did make me to shed a tear. Bravo John lewis to highlighting children in care.
I was a single working mum with very little money in the 1980s. I had to save every spare penny to give my son and daughter a skateboard each for Christmas when they were still at primary school. They played with them until they were well into their teens. My grandchildren expect computers, iPads and iPhones not to mention all the software to go with it, I know first hand how Christmas can effect poorer parents, my heart is with them.
That's the best Christmas advert I've ever seen in my 44 years ... well done folks
Wow, we're touched. Thank you so much Matt - Wil
I've recently become a father to a little girl, this made me quite a mess of emotions, but ultimately good ones. Thank you for this beautiful message 🥺
Thank you for your kind words ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause. - Ashlé
Wow, a real British family in christmas ad, it's a miracle.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you to every single person involved in fostering and adoption, you are the real heroes. As an ex-teacher I know the impact you have and the importance in what you do.
As someone who was in the care system this was absolutely beautiful and I may or may not have cried a lil
Loved this. Shout out to all the genuine foster parents who care for their foster kids and test them like their own.
As an adoptive parent of a child that was in care for a number of years, this most definitely brought all the emotions. Well done x
As a 42 year old just learning to skate THIS HITS HOME ALL THE WAYYYY!!!! I LOVE IT!! THANKS FOR MAKING ME CRYYYY xxx
It's so good to hear that you love it, and go you 🛹 - Wil
I'm 43. Although I have been skating since I was 13. Don't give up. If you want some inspiration, check out the worlds oldest sponsored skater Neil Unger. Guys in his 60s and only just started. He's already got his own style and inventing new stuff. It's never too late.
Wonderful advert by John Lewis. Simple but poignant and emotive. None of the ostentatious trappings off Christmas seen in other adverts, just a good decent man with a heart. Really struck a chord and tugged at the heart strings. Brilliant.
OMG, I cannot stop crying....
Take a bow John Lewis. Outstandingly beautiful and so right for how we feel right now.
As a care-experienced adult whose parents foster, and someone who helped shape the work of The Promise in Scotland, this fills my wee heart. ❤
Thank you for your kind words Alastair ❤️ We're proud to be supporting such an important cause. - Ashlé
He took up skating to prepare for this..what a powerful ad!
Love it, so glad it has a simple different message than all the other retailers. It's hard times this year. Do you know what.. giving your time and love to someone is the best gift of all
We love it too ❤️ Thank you for the kind words, Yvonne 😊 -Sara
Could not have put it better @Yvonne
Man, I’m not a particularly emotional guy, but the frightened and shy look on that little girl’s face at the end really got me 🥺
Aww, you and us both, Sam! We're proud to be supporting such an important cause. 🛹❤️ - Petra
That’s lovely. Not too sentimental. And for one showcasing how epic dads are! Whether they be stepdads, real dads or foster dads. The world needs dads!
If you didn't know , the partners of John Lewis are it's staff . They all get a share of the profits , they're experts in their departments and even take the merchandise home with them to evaluate .
Half my house came from them .
Actually found it very moving. Got it right and well done for raising the issue of the importance of looking after those children who need help. It is our job as a society to protect and help them. Well done John Lewis. 👏
Me and my family were all in tears after seeing this for the first time yesterday. My foster daughter said that's the kind of thing I'd do. When she joined our family I tried learning guitar, but we settled on adopting her cat in the end 🤣.
It has it's ups and downs and is at times very hard work, but i can't imagine anything more rewarding and worthwhile than fostering. Experiences that most young people take for granted like going on holiday, getting on a plane, going to a music gig, may all be new to a teenage foster child, and watching that young person grow and reach their potential is incredible.
Well done JLP for showing the other side of story. The story of love, kindness, nerves and sore knees that goes into meeting our new family members for the first time.
Thanks so much for sharing this Paul ❤️ - Wil
Thanks so much for sharing this Paul ❤️ - Wil
Shout out to all the former and present foster care kids like me 🙌 I'm proud of you ♥️

I was wondering when the tears would happen… then the end happened… I am blubbering 😢❤❤❤❤
brought a tear to my eye
As a young teenager I was placed into the care system and seeing this young girl at the door made me cry. I was blessed to always feel safe and wanted in each of my foster homes…but I knew some who did not. The love, empathy and respect shown within the story of this advert made my heart sing! Well done John Lewis.
As a child who grew up in the system it makes me happy and sad. Happy to see us represented as I feel like kids in care don’t get spoken about or shown in the media very often. Sad because it brought back memories of moving from house to house but never having a home. So thank you John Lewis, for thinking of us. Christmas is a hard time for children with no forever home and family.
Brilliant just brilliant.
If it wasn't for the 6 years I spent in care I would not be who I am today ❤ forever grateful and would love to give back in the future sometime. We'll done JL for highlighting the ones who people tend to forget 🙏
Thanks so much for sharing that, we're touched❤️ - Wil
big respect to John Lewis for using their platform to highlight this cause instead of promoting themselves and kudos to the actors and especially the gentleman who hopefully we will see more of as he nailed it in this advert ❤
So well done! The cinematography, music and acting! All amazing!
One year later and still watch this advert. Something timeless about this one. Awesome advert
Lovely ad

Aww, glad to hear you liked our ad! 🛹✨ - Petra
Thank you for this wonderful Christmas advert! I've not been very impressed with the last few year's offerings but this one is simply perfect. Beautiful message delivered in a very touching and charming way. Well done, John Lewis!
Thank you, John Lewis, for shedding light on some of the reality of what it is to be a child in care. I was in care for several years before being lucky enough to be adopted, but good Foster carers are essential, and our children need more!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It's been so special to have lived experiences and stories shared with us. Reinforcing more than ever the importance of supporting this cause ❤️ ^Nicola
Best John lewis ad in five years
What a lovely Christmas advert from John Lewis. Unfortunately there too many children in the care system these days. The thought of a child going to a home with 2 loving people waiting to make the life of that child extra special is heartwarming.
Oh my! I think this has become one of my favourite Christmas adverts ever. Well done John Lewis.
All the actors in this are great, from the new foster carers to Ellie. Well done!
I love the bit where he's wheeling the Christmas Tree home on his board, watching boarding videos at work, and the his delight at catching his board. And as for Ellie hugging her board as though it's her most treasured possession, and her understated nerves and worries all in her face and stance. All just wonderful.
In his words: "Yep! Nailed it!"
Brilliant as always - but this one really resonates for someone like myself who was experienced residential care at Christmas. Very sensitively handled and very thought provoking. Spot on, guys!
i'm 47years old, and just started skateboarding recently. i watch this video before skating often. the best ad that i have ever seen.
All the small things ❤
What an advert, always on point, him learning to skate for her almost brought a tear to my eye, a realy heartwarming story ❤
We couldn’t agree more! It really had us in bits 😢 - Ashlé
Brilliant JL xmas ad - my sister gave up nursing a few years ago and is now a foster carer - hope the ad leads to more carers, well done JL!
Got this ad on a video, and I just wanted to come and say, whoever made this needs a raise lmao, didn’t even skip it
As with every year, the John Lewis Xmas advertisement, has reduced me to tears. xxx
Love this advert, myself and my 2 brothers were in children's homes and Foster home,so this Is close to my heart, well done John Lewis ❤️❤️❤️
Aww my goodness what a beautiful message this advert gives out to people. This is what Christmas is all about . Thank you John Lewis once again you've had me crying with yet another Christmas advert. 🌲⛄⛄🌲
Thank you for your kind comment Christine, we're touched ❤️ - Wil
Short, simple and sweet.
I am a foster carer and this is brilliant. So heartwarming for a big brand to stand for true care and love for xmas without being smaltzy. And children in foster care will feel seen by society in the media and will feel a bit cool and not outcasts which many can. Well done John Lewis and the creative team behind this 👏 👍 👌 🙌
We’re touched Lisa, thank you ♥️ - Ashlé
This just shows the spirit and hope everyone has a good Christmas:)
Perfect. I can't watch it without crying
See what you did John Lewis. You made me cry. Looking forward to supporting these charities alongside you xx
We're touched ❤️ Thank you Louise. We're super proud to support this cause -Sara
Big thank you John Lewis for promoting fostering in such an inspirational way! It's great to reflect the commitment and lengths that foster carers go to to connect with and welcome the young people that come to live with them. We loved it 🥰
AT LAST! The real meaning of Christmas. Be nice to those who need a little help and stop thinking about yourself for a change! This is a wonderful message and really tugs at the heart strings. 👍
A short film a few Christmas’s ago called ‘Love is a gift’ showed the meaning of Christmas before this. Interesting that it was the John Lewis Christmas ad of that year (the Elton John one) that drove the film maker of ‘Love is a gift’ to make it as his film only cost £50 while John Lewis paid a hell of lot more for theirs.
The real meaning of Christmas is of course that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our saviour. However Jesus repeatedly said and demonstrated that we must love and care for others and treat them as we would like to be treated, exactly as this man is doing.
This advert has shattered me into pieces. Like many of you, I too know what it’s like to be that kid stood at a strangers door like this - many times over. I bang the drum for kids in care and care leavers all the time. I’m so pleased John Lewis is too. 🤍
Thank you Seb, we're proud to be highlighting and supporting such an important cause 🎄 - Katya
What a nice advert.....best they have done in years!
As we wait in anticipation for our 3 yr old guest and his mum from Ukraine thanks John Lewis for reminding us it's a good to share our love, wherever we come from.
So lovely, Kate. Wishing you all the best 💕 - Mark
I laughed at the start, then fought tears at the end. A beautifully written advert, and a clever song choice.
Sounds like you've been through an emotional rollercoaster, but we are glad you enjoyed it - Rory
Brilliant ad and beautifully judged considering how hard this year is for so many. Well done, JL.
