- THE 2018 John Lewis Christmas advert stars Sir Elton John and tells the story of why some gifts are more than just a gift.
The ad, called The Boy and the Piano, begins with a dressing-gown clad Sir Elton gently tapping out the opening bars to Your Song - his first big hit, released in 1970.
Viewers are then taken through key moments in his life, including stadium tours, travelling on a private jet, playing at his local pub and performing at a school.
It ends with four-year-old Elton running down stairs on Christmas morning, unwrapping a gift of a piano given to him by his grandmother - a present that changed his life forever.
We then see Sir Elton playing the final few notes of Your Song, reflecting on his career.
At each stage of his life the performance of Your Song is a recording of Sir Elton’s voice from that time.
The 71-year-old superstar is currently on a Farewell Tour around the US.
Sir Elton, now married to David Furnish, features in the present-day scenes, while five actors take on the role of him at various stages of his life.

Made me cry......he wrote the soundtrack for an entire generation.
There should be a s at the end of generation....
Absolutely 💓
His music spoke to everybody. That’s how special it is

Do you fly on 777s? Just wondering. Bruce
Literally one of the best commercials I've seen. Heartwarming
would make a beautiful pro life commercial
For real you had to turn this political? 🙄
@@jasonfideler1927 Didn't mean to do that , just thought what a gift he is to the world , and thankful he is here. Sorry , didn't mean to be a down for you.
Rather have McDonald's new ad
More festive
@@melgrant7404 shut up
I would love to have seen Elton's reaction when he first saw it.
My mom gave me a toy stethoscope when I was 7 years old and today I am a doctor. This is the most heart touching comercial I've ever seen because this happened to me too but in a different way. Thank you mom for that gift that changed my life and gave to me a passion to live for. ♥♥
Bless you Doc I've got to agree. Merry Christmas to you and your Mom.
This is exactly the point so many people missed in the commercial bc they were too busy complaining that it was not festive enough.
WOW! !!
I got a toy gun but I didn't go out shooting people!
@@walmartrotisseriechicken Dang???? WTF??
4 years later and it still gives me goosebumps
The look of the mother as she gazes upon her precious son is beyond words. Excuse me, I've got something in my eye.
Though she was heartless in real life....
@@NAMBAPIANO exactly
@@NAMBAPIANO Nah, I don't believe that. She was a piece of work with occasional mood swings but judging by what I read from Eltons book she wasn't really a bad person and they had good times too. Hard to say much about their relationship as an outsider other than it surely must have been difficult but calling her heartless just like that? That's a bit too harsh.
@@PK-it9yt have you watched rocket man? Cause it did not look like that there.
@@NAMBAPIANO Biographical movies are known to dramatize certain events for an impactful story. And in this case I'm going to trust a book that goes through Eltons life much more thoroughly than a 2 hour movie that has a lot of these dramatized scenes.
if you are over 50, this man's gift is the music of your life.
I'm 55 this man has been the soundtrack of my teenage years 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Not over fifty, still proud to be alive along side with him and to have grown up with his music - our music.
dafyd242 cannot wait to she his movie that should be out soon. Happy Holidays!
I'm 19 and I love his music wtf
I'm 12 and I like this song
Best ad in history. Undeniable.
My wife and I rolled our eyes before watching this, cynically thinking self promotion. We were teary at the end. A lovely commercial.
There are tears in my eyes.
There are eyes in my tears*
There were also tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat
💜
Me Too!!!
One of the most emotional ads ever
First Christmas without my parents, this song is one of my favorites and it’s for you....Dad & mum...I will always love iu
made me cry. those were my fingers when I was five. now I am 70
God bless u sir:)
This gave me the chills the first time I saw it. It is the best commercial ever.
This is really beautiful. One gift can change someone's life. Music and the arts matter.
tell that to the thousands of artists with several jobs to pay for their art, because it doesn't pay for itself.
@@kessuperstara That's my point, although maybe I didn't express it as clearly as I should have. The arts matter, to the artists and to the people who appreciate it. The arts need support, including financial.
I can't stop watching this commercial. Perfect in every way.
Worried I was a sociopath as the 2019 ad left me entirely unmoved. Watched this one to check and shed a tear. Personality disorder diagnosis negative. Phew!
Pretty sure the timeline for the clips is as follows:
2018->1989->1986->1975->1973->1971->1969->1965 (pub)
What is the 1975 concert?
It's actually 1976, not 1975.
@@starprincess66 that’s the dodgers stadium concert from 1975
@@dyinglight91 it's his US Tour of 1976
Here's the order of the clips I think:
2018 ---> 2005 (Red Piano) ---> 1989 ---> 1986 (Australia) ---> 1975 (Dodger Stadium) ---> 1974 (Private Jet) ---> 1971 (BBC Studios) ---> 1970 (Recording Studio) ---> Mid 60s (Pub) ---> Early 60s (Royal Academy of Music) ---> 1950s
I know the advert's purpose was celebrating gift giving and its significance during this time of year. Yet as musicians, more often than not, we have to give all credit and thanks to our parent(s) for their support in our passion for music. I will always cherish my first instrument given to me by my mom. Her love for music and her endeavor to instill that same love in me, will always be foremost in my heart.
I gave my kids a medium tail piano in 2008 and the four of them are excelent! all grown ups! all play the piano! the piano is the best gift ever! this commercial shows that
they nailed the casting for his mother and grandmother
In two minutes this commercial mops the floor with the two-hour Glee episode known as “Rocketman.”
This is storytelling at its best.
Growing up to Eltons music must’ve been a gift in itself
Jesus! Now I'm balling my eyes out! I'm losing my mom to alzheimers and I haven't cry about it until today because I have to be strong for her. The combination of the lyrics and the visuals just put me over the edge. Thanks, I guess.
Brought tears to my eyes. One of the best commercials of all time that summarizes a beautiful life (so far) in 2 minutes.
Very impressive.
How wonderful to watch in few minutes flashback of decades of great career ,passing through different great performances of a great song through out time , landing when he was a teen age boy playing piano further back through school days , to discover at the end that this piano was a Christmas gift from his mother in his childhood.
Wonderfully crafted video .
A gift from his Grandmother!!!!!! I played Grandma in the commercial!!!! It was me who gave it to him.
Are people like forgetting this is a *Christmas* advert and an advert for *Jhon Lewis*
Makes me cry....years gone by...some people sadly now just a memory. 😭
Why do I always cry when I watch this?…
Still my favourite Christmas advert. Simply beautiful
Speechless. The best promo or comercial or whatever it is, or was... EVER.
I'm so glad I got to see him live in his last show
This by far is one of the BEST commercials that I've seen ! EJ is amazing that the message is truly an incredible one.
Beautiful, and what a gift to the world has Elton's music 🎶 been.
my dad is a teacher. in a staff meeting he recently had, he had shown this video to the staff. at the end of the video he stated that in math, even if you show one way to solve a problem, that could make it click for a kid. what my dad was trying to get across is that a kid might be so close to the answer, and all they needed was something to set it off. now ever since that kid found that strategy and solved that math question, maybe he’s a huge mathimatition, or a coder for a video game, who knows. the little things matter.
One of the few adverts I want to watch again and again
I cry like baby everytime I rewatch this. So beautiful.
Still by far the best John Lewis advert in my opinion....
When he looks at the piano as a little boy in those he found his calling, I got to see him in Jacksonville for Father's Day for my daughter I will never forget it we both cried right when he came out
I really love this advert plus love Eltons music it’s about how something like a gift could transform your life, so it is different from the other Christmas adverts they do but original
Absolutely wonderful. Stunning. A trip down memory lane. Thank you.
I watched this at work and nearly teared up at my desk. Perfection.
I'm not crying! It's just a memory inside my eye! 😞
That is a beautiful and original and entirely fitting way to put it .......
I’m not crying I swear💔😭
Yea that's me.
Liarsss! !!!
Whenever I need a good blub, I just come watch this.
Not a artist today gives that energy into a performance the way he did when he jumped on the piano to get the crowd into it
Moving. A lifelong listening to this absolute masterpiece. Such a honouring video to a genius.
To this day still the best commercial I've ever seen.
Even if his voice changes, he is a living legend 😊😊
How much is a lifetime of memories worth, priceless.
One of the best commercial in my whole life

“How wonderful life is...” the best christmas advert ever.
This is made so beautiful, it makes me cry everytime again 😂
Best commercial ever ..
The pint of this is, music appreciation can start when you are very young
So well done. Brilliant. In a world of crap and hacking it together, thank God for companies like John Lewis.
Agreed. Some gifts are much much more than a gift.

It felt comforting to have witnessed most of the different stages of career!
His parents made a good investment buying to him a piano😂😂
He ever paid them back you think? That baby grand probably costs half a house.
His parents didn't buy him the piano.
His grandmother gave him her piano.
Martin Uzunov the piano was a gift, and it’s an upright, not baby grand. And baby grands can actually be pretty cheap
@@martinuzunov9346 It wasn't a baby grand -it was an upright. If it was second hand (even new) : nothing like half the cost of a house.

This is a brilliant commercial. Many of us have a similar story. Mine was a typewriter. Some gifts are indeed more than a gift.
amazing feeling, the thrue christmas feeling, Love it!!
It's impossible to measure, but if I was asked, "what is the greatest commercial of all time?"...this is it.
Soooo heartrending and wonderful - when the little boy opens his present .....
Me and my wife loved it! Thank you so much. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone.
Beautiful tribute to his Mum
Jane Stumpf I was thinking the same thing.
Made me cry. Well done, John Lewis.
made me cry!
I'm not crying, i just have a Grand Piano in my eye.
Gifts should be thoughtful and more to do with joy and less to do with money, this commercial encompasses that perfectly.
This is so wholesome but if you saw the movie the mother was a complete bit 😂😂
The best commercial I've ever seen
I'm not crying, my eyes are just sweating. 🥺❤❤
This ad means so much more to me now
Who has the audacity to dislike this??
Quem fez esse comercial tinha que ganhar um prêmio. Perfeito
Some how these adverts get better than the one before by touching so many hearts so congrats and merry Christmas!!!
