I like the exploration of the use of Super Deformed (SD) characters. The best example of SD "ironic cuteness" for my money is Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti for the Famicom (Japan only). If you know Splatterhouse, it is not cute! Leech monsters, guts falling out, occultism, possessions, a guy with a sack over his head and chainsaw arms... But Namco made a cute version! Absurdist humor such as this seems to be pretty popular in Japan, and I actually find it entertaining as well. Anyway, for what it's worth, the game is now available in the recently released Namco Museum Archives Vol 1.

This game has great mechanics and mind-games. Unblockable special button attacks, high-low mixups with the costume combos, conventional combos from normal attacks into specials/mighty combos, the "burst" feature for emergencies, the tug-of-war over gem possession, levelling up special moves... The list goes on. It's a very deep game underneath the cute presentation.

I love Pocket Fighter. I was really into Japanese entertainment of any type, serious or silly, and I found the chibi syles for comedy very fun. Being a fan of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, I dug this game and had no problem wrapping my head around it. Pocket Fighter was great for its casual gameplay, silly tranformations, and all the background easter eggs. Since the menu and music settings were reminiscent of Street Fighter Alpha 2, it further cemented that game's influence on fighters at the time, and is why I miss the Alpha series.
Since Capcom had the Marvel fighters and had JUST released X-Men vs Street Fighter around this time, I was expecting to see X-Babies vs Pocket Fighter not just for the silly effect, but also because the X-Babies were part of X-Men canon in the comics, being cutie versions of the Marvel mutants created by Mojo as a means of capitalizing on their popularity. In fact, had the game come to fruition, I would have expected a decidedly uncute Mojo as the final boss the characters would fight against. Sadly, history has shown that I was the only one who had this dream.
Great video as always! Looking forward to your Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3 video!

    • @spoonimefan
      @spoonimefan 4 года назад +1

👆 I like the way you think!
What you say brain-sparked some variations on the idea. A possible alt title could be "X-Babies VS Gem (or Pocket) Fighters". That wording might allow for bringing more of the non-SF chibi characters in the mix.
And of course, you could try to have sequels of *that*. "Mini-Marvels VS Gem/Pocket Fighters", "Mighty Mini-Marvels VS Capcom Crystal Fighters", and other variations on the naming convention. The major question would be what the best characters to have on the roster would be; you'd want to pick ones that would benefit most from the chibi treatment and also aren't already represented by the "Costume Combo" transformations. 🤔

It took me a while to get back to post this but I came up w/some character options for such a game, mostly based on characters who've already been in Capcom fighters.

      Storm
      Iceman
      Sentinel
      Magneto
      Spider-Man
Iron Man (Switched out for Sentinel?)
Hulk (With Juggernaut and Colossus transformations?)
      Captain America?
      Capcom:
      Donovan (Back from Puzzle Fighter)
Devilotte (Also back from Puzzle Fighter), or replace w/Jin Saotome?
      Guile or Charlie/Nash
      Captain Commando
      Strider Hiryu
      Wesker
      Zero (X Series)

I bought this game on PS1 when it first released in the US. I've always been heavily into RPGs, so at the time, I wanted kind of a palette cleanser. FuncoLand (GameStop's original name) had a deal at the time for half off a used copy of Super Puzzle Fighter with purchase of a new Pocket Fighter. 2 birds...
I loved both games. They were both hilarious and loads of fun. Both of my sisters (17 and 9 at the time) would play Puzzle Fighter for ungodly amounts of time for many years. My little sister even dipped her toes into Pocket Fighter. That was her gateway into fighting games. Today, she regularly whips me and both of our brothers in just about every 2D fighter we play together.

I played this a lot. I used zangief. Grab then opponent will bounce off the wall then air grab to slam down.

Street Fighter Alpha was heavily inspired by the Street Fighter animated film. In fact the director of the alpha series said without the anime movie there would be no Alpha series. In the Japanese rom there’s even a special tag team match against dictator that was based on the Animated film finale and used the same theme song.
Anyway pocket fighter is a spin off of Super puzzle fighter II turbo which art style is based on the alpha series which was very anime esque.
Super deformed chibi style art originally started due to hardware limitations in classic retro games. Obviously they couldn’t render big sprites on screen so many games in the 80s would shrink down the character sprites and the super deformed aesthetic with big eyes could give the characters expression.

First played this back in the day when i was 9 turning 10. I remember i was sleeping over at my father's place along with his ex's (before they broke up) son and his family and friends. That morning was awful due to being accused of sabotage. My father took me to EB Games (Before GameStop took over my local area) and he gotten me not only a Naruto game (The first and original Ultimate Ninja just in case anyone wonders) but also Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, which this game was part of. I wish Puzzle Fighter was part of the compilation too since i like that game slightly better than i do Pocket Fighter.
I didnt think too much of how the characters looked and how different it was given the fact i myself was a child, so it worked out with me in Capcom's favor. There was times i viewed it as weird (certain moves and the last cutsene in the credits), but for the most part i liked this game. I still get a kick out of playing it today, especially when i hit my opponents so hard they orbit the world (literally). I have both the western and Japanese release (Difference between the two is that the Japanese version has audio dialogue in the cutscenes of the game) One thing i never found an answer to my question was...... Why did the PS2 version contain not only the music from Puzzle Fighter, some unknown tracks, and few songs from different games like Ibuki's theme from SF3, Zangief's theme from MVC1, and Tessa's theme straight from Red Earth. Plus im seeing some very different stages in this video. Could they be located in the console ports from the 90s by any chance?

Hello there me from 2 to 3 years ago! I just found out that was the desert stage from a mode exclusive to the Saturn and PS1 versions of Pocket Fighter called "Running Battle" mode. It is also the same stage where that one upbeat unused track in Street Fighter Alpha Anthology comes from. It is called "Never Give Up" by Isao Abe. I still got no clue why Street Fighter 3, MVC1, Puzzle Fighter, and Red Earth/Warzard music is in the PS2 version of Pocket Fighter tho.

Back in the 90's I played and loved it, I hoped to see the leveling system in other fighting games
Could you talk about more SNK fighting games? I feel SNK is a little bit under represented in this series

I got to play this on Dreamcast a couple times, a HUGE amount of fun; even more fun then Night Warriors. I wish this was not as scoffed at by the larger community when it came out.

Firstly, the Gamespot review seems to not understand that the character selected in Puzzle Fighter impacts how gems are sent to your opponent, so picking a character matters. It's a nice touch to add to the game.
Second, I'm amazed people disliked this game. It was such a nice casual fighting game. In the days of Killer Instincts, Tekkens, UMK3s, SF3s, having a nice easy to pick up and play fighting game was a blast and a very welcome step back.
It played well, was fun, wasn't overly technical... Most fighting games light on depth were every light on fun, but not this one. I feel like anyone not able to find some enjoyment out of this game is being closed minded to the art style.
I never went to the arcade without dropping a few quarters into this one.

This game was just TOO ANIME, but BEFORE Anime achieve Huge Mainstream Success in the West. Remember that this came out about a YEAR BEFORE Pokemon hit the American Airwaves. It was simply released TOO EARLY! If this was released during the PS2 Era, I think it would have had MUCH more success. It's definitely a good game, even Justin Wong has praised it. There's a lot of fun to be had, as a non serious fighter. An the Aesthetics are all REALLY nice. It was a HUGE love letter to Capcom fighting games and I wish more people gave it the love it deserves.
