  • Finally was able to put together a slide show of the entire Chris Craft restoration process of my first EVER restoration project. It was a huge project to take on being that I haven't even restored a wooden stool but the learning experience was worth every minute of it. There was plenty of times I thought to myself what did I get myself into ?? Then I took a look at photos of how far I have come with the project and everything made sense, never quit on your dreams.
    I purchased the 17ft Chris Craft in Jan 2013 and it was in the water April of 2015.
    I had a vision and a dream, then I put in the work to achieve it........
    When a classic meets imagination and modern technology.........

    I am looking to buy an old chris craft for $2500 no engine just the boat itself. torn between going for a restoration or buying a good running chris craft for 22k. but I like the idea of restoring an old boat just because you can do whatever you want with it since you are spending money anyway. That is a very nice boat you have there. I bet it's a head turner.

    Very nice custom restoration. My brother Alan owned this boat for many years and even though we are in the boat and engine restoration business we never could find time to start this project. I also find it is a small world in that Michael at Snake Mountain purchased a Mark 55H restoration from us for use on his Speedliner DU racing boat.Good luck with your fine project.David Van WeeleAeroliner Race Boats, LLC

    Alston- I have viewed your video a couple of times. I am also restoring a 1956 Chris Craft Holiday for the first time. The boat seems to be in very solid condition and I am in the process of stripping the original finish off the hull. I have been researching the different methods of redoing the bottom...epoxy/fiberglass vs the 5200 bottom. I saw that you glassed your bottom and was curious how it was holding up after (3) years of use. Also...what type of cloth did you use? I have previous experience with "S" glass and was considering using that on my boat.
    Thanks,
    Stan Graham

      Look up SnakeMtBoatWorks on youtube and watch their videos. James Town distributors online was my go to for products. Antiqueboat.com was another valuable site. My best advice is to do as much research as you can and make your own decisions based on research, Be creative, learn from your mistakes and most importantly keep moving on with the project no matter what until its complete. Best of luck !!

      Matthew Unruh buy Don Danenbergs book on how to restore a wooden boat then go restore your boat and do as the book says.

  • @cliffordkiehl3959

    Another approach would have been to restore it to original. Leave the Gray Marine engine in it and it would be worth a whole lot more.

    • @MrAlstonbc
      @MrAlstonbc  3 года назад

      That is a possibility, but I didn’t want to restore it to original. I wanted to add my own touch to it to make it unique.

    I'm reading further in the comments. Says don't put fiberglass on a wood boat but I've seen a lot of wood boat projects on line where fiberglass is layered over wood. So I don't understand this comment. Either this is incorrect, just someone's opinion or a bunch of very experienced builders are doing the wrong thing. Can someone clarify?

    • @meincotu
      @meincotu 4 года назад

      There are many opinions. When someone says fiberglass I assume polyester resin and fiberglass cloth. It has a bad reputation. Epoxy / glass is better.
      Much depends on how the boat is being used. My last restoration was on a boat that would be on a trailer between uses and I opted to epoxy / glass the bottom as I felt that the alternate wetting / swelling / taking up and drying out would be worse, constantly working the fasteners. Since this boat has a substantial trailer I assume it isn't kept in the water.

      Often rots out from the inside out. Very hard to see when it’s fiberglass over. Never ever fiberglass under the waterline

      Experience and doing things right are quite often two very different things. My father had a saying: "just because you have been doing it this way for years doesn't necessarily mean it's done properly"!

    PLEASE DONT EVER PUT A FIBERGLASS BOTTOM ON A CLASSIC WOOD BOAT. ITS LIKE AN EGG SHELL ON A TENNIS BALL. THESE BOATS ARE MEANT TO FLEX. IT WILL ONLY BREAK THE FRAMES IN SHORT ORDER. THEY SIGNED THE DEATH SENTENCE TO THIS ONE.

      this rebuild was researched by many people wasn't just glasssed over. everything was thought out using modern materials and is being used in saltwater. boat is still fine and being used today. owner can do what he wants it's his boat and doesn't want to have to leave it swelled in the water all year in Florida. keeping a wooden boat in a boathouse in a northern lake is a big difference than trailering a boat in the Sunshine State.

  • @buyamerican3191
    @buyamerican3191 3 года назад +1

    I applaud your commitment to this project, I am however saddened at some of the choices you made. I'm sure you thought it was a good idea but the fiberglass coating on the bottom is a death sentence, the water in the bilge is now trapped and will promote rot in what's left of the planking, ribs, knees and chines. The black hull paint although striking, does not fit the originality or the style of the boat.I'm glad you enjoy it but you have removed all value and tarnished the name Chris Craft.

    • @MrAlstonbc
      @MrAlstonbc  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for your feedback Craig, luckily for you this boat is my Chris Craft and NOT yours. Sadly the only thing that was tarnished was the value of your opinion. Take care, be safe Craig !!

      @@MrAlstonbc I was also questioning what happened with the underside. A slideshow can't really tell every single thing, so I want to ask: did you repair/replace the damaged wood before glassing? Some of those photos of the bottom were pretty darned rough. Take note that I disagree with any tarnishing of the Chris Craft name. Either you restore it or it continues to degrade. Glad you made something of this.
