The Legend of Zelda, originally released in Japan as The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu, is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo. The first game of The Legend of Zelda series, it is set in the fantasy land of Hyrule and centers on an elf-like boy named Link, who aims to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from the antagonist Ganon. During the course of the game, the player controls Link from a top-down perspective and navigates throughout the overworld and dungeons, collecting weapons, defeating enemies and uncovering secrets along the way.

1:09 The ones on the overworld throwing spears are moblins. The ones in dungeons throwing boomerangs are goriyas.
Thanks for that. I was racking my brain for what the boomerang ones were called.
Back in 1991 I made water colored maps of each dungeon to beat this game. A great game for everyone.
This is hands down my favorite series right now
I agree. Really enjoyable
yoo fire pfp my guy
@@male_04 cheers bro, took awhile to edit and make
@@BuckSnortx nice
Fun fact: the pols (bunnies) were intended to be beaten with sound by blowing or whistling through the controller but it only works on the Japanese versions because our controllers were not built with the correct holes in them to do so
And for some reason it's still exclusive to only Japanese rereleases of the game like Virtual Console and whatnot. It's a shame, it'd be nice if they added it as an easter egg to a western version.
UMMM Actually they're called Pol's Voice! *adjusts glasses*
@@BlondeBarbarianYou took my comment lol
The “hint” you get in the level 5 dungeon also indicates they can be defeated by sound, so I, as a child, tried the flute to no avail. That “hint” has been updated over the years to give you a hint that actually helps on the NES (i.e. using arrows). I was not aware of this update until I played LoZ on NSO.
@michaelberger136 Yeah the hint was meant for the Famicom version. I had heard about the NSO version changing it but I haven't played the game through that service yet, when I replay the game next I definitely will though
Seven dungeons down, two more to go. Ryu is a beast.
Bro not only managed to one-shot the blue darknut room with base sword and tunic, he ended with _more_ HP than when he started. What a fucking legend. You could give Lack a run for his money! lol
Luck is always a factor. Especially when he's skipping 10th enemy trick (and 16th F), only now discovered that bombing walls works, and using a certain item (and another) to collect distant items. 😁
Lack isn't the one to beat anymore. Look at GreenMario's run.
He did have the Magic Wand which does White Sword damage when used as a sword. But for being his first time, he nailed it that's for sure.
@@quentinlindsey1232 I don't know much about this game but I kinda figured the wand did damage equal to the white sword
I've really enjoyed this series so far! I haven't finished this one myself yet. It's part of my LONG backlog of retro games.
It can be dangerous. You beat it once, and then the 2nd Quest becomes available. After that, there's the siren call of fan-made randomizers...
@@KamisamanoOtaku Ha! I could definitely see that. I've wanted to get into randomizers for a LONG time. Maybe this is the year I take the plunge!
Spoiler:
This man just cleared back to back rooms full of blue Darknuts with four hearts, no Blue Ring, no medicine, and no bomb cheese, you better drop a like
No stabbing through blocks, either.
Yeah that was absolutely insane!
unnecesary comment
Last video I posted to get the ring and to purchase the bigger shield. For me to I do need as much hearts to beat this game.
And I believe he's still using the base sword 😂
That last map was a "face" and the tip of it's nose was where the stairs were.
Old Man: There's a secret in the nose.
Map: Hi, I'm shaped like a head and this room would be the nose.
Ryu: This dungeon is so cryptic!
Old Man: 🤦🏻♂
It's almost like he didn't have the map at that point but I guess paying attention to the video is hard
The manual really helps clue make more sense.
@@shakes5847 He got the clue, he got the map, he did not then put 2 and 2 together. I haven't played this game in 30 years and I still knew what the clue had to mean after every prior dungeon was shaped like something.
@@palaceofwisdom9448I've never played this game and immediately knew he must be talking about the shape of the map. This is the first time I've watched anyone play this game. I only knew lore of this game before watching.
Me watching people play Zelda: "Look at the maps." "Look at the maps!" "LOOK AT THE F@#$%% MAP!!!"
It's also how every player misses the 100 free rupees.
Ryu playing this game for the first time is making me want to replay it lol
I dusted it off and I'm getting my ass kicked even while looking things up
This will always be my favorite Zelda game!!!
Same
I think ALTTP is a better game but I agree, 1 is my favorite as well.
The NES instruction manual has a cryptic clue regarding the Bunny Ears guys (Pols Voice). It says that their ears make them susceptible to loud noise which naturally led players to assume that they meant the flute (recorder). In actuality it refers to a feature exclusive to the Famicom. Yelling into the microphone built into controller 2 on the Famicom would instantly kill all of them in the room. (Kid Icarus had a similar feature regarding the shops but was replaced by a button combo on the NES.)
Does the Famicom controller have the same hookup as the US NES controller? If so, could we, theoretically, use a Famicom controller to whistle into?
@@SanativeSparrow Unfortunately, Famicom controllers are hard wired into the console.
I have work on Sunday mornings and it's so nice to secretly not actually do anything and just watch this series
I typically work on Sunday mornings too, but today is an exception.
13:05 welcome to Zelda 1! Where the only "puzzle" they could come up with is to spam you with powerful enemies
I mean, there's some 'mysteries' in the world and a few riddles. Mostly it's just exploring and accidentally stumbling on what you need. Still, this game was unique at the time and despite some very vague things, it actually is possible to beat without a guide. That being said... it's also possible to get stuck. I got stuck once because I thought every dungeon had 1 item and as such... I left dungeon 9 without getting the silver arrows since I thought I was done after getting something else. Had to resort to a guide because the final boss couldn't be killed.
*grumble grumble*
@@thenonexistinghero Unique doesn't necessarily mean good. People are just using nostalgia as a shield to protect this game. The 'meat' part to the grumbling monster is just bad. It's not well presented. It could at least say 'I'm hungry' or something. Game was meant to be played with a guide and that is a design flaw by itself.
Sure you could say that it's possible to beat it without a guide by spending(wasting) 10x the time you would go if you knew the answer. But that's being pendantic, after all the most important part of a game is being fun, not tedious or frustrating.
@@Willowisp927 Not everything in the game was good, but you're delusional if you think this game wasn't revolutionary when it came out. And even calling it revolutionary is a huge understatement. And quite honestly, tons of people had fun with it. Games being frustrating and tedious at times is also what makes them very rewarding. It's a very simple concept. I can only imagine that you're very young if you don't understand the charm of difficult games. Heck, Ryukahr plays the most difficult and tedious levels in Mario Maker all the time and has loads of fun with many of them.
@@thenonexistinghero I never said it wasn't revolutionary when it came out, I said being unique doesn't mean it's automatically good. Strawman nor adhominem aren't good signs of great argumentation. It's ironic that you're calling me very young when you're pretty much acting as a fanboy who can't take criticism to the game for the exactly reason as I said: "Using nostalgia as a shield" to justify all it's design flaws.
Also, it's you who don't understand something so simple that Ryukarh plays boring and frustrating levels because it's his JOB. He gets PAID for it. Understand the difference? Plenty of people are actually annoyed to see him play the same garbage levels in SMM and he knows that, otherwise the editor wouldn't cut like 80% of the video.
I finished all the Darksouls and I love games like that, so please, stop pretending that you know people because of a comment and that you're more knowledgeable and mature than them. You're not the snowflake that you think you are. And finally, If I didn't like hard games I wouldn't even be watching, but being a fanboy that disregard all it's big design flaws? No, thanks.
it used to be his beard that looked like a cartoon character, now it's the fringe. progress.
Your deliberate refusal to take the heart container will bite you in the end I bet.
It's been a while, but I don't think I even found the wand, but definitely had red candle and meat from just wandering aimlessly.
My issue was less finding the meat and more trying to use it on everything without knowing what it was good for.
I love this game. Sometimes, I'll pull it out and do a quick speedrun. It's nice to see other people playing it. Though I wished he knew the boomrange can retrieve far away items. All the gears have their uses.
I think these videos show how the true challenge of the game was the puzzles and exploration
Don't feel bad about not figuring out the Grumble Grumble room. The original Japanese word used was the sound of a stomach grumbling indicating hunger. They translating to English and used grumble, which is used for the rumbling of the tummy for hunger, but it also has other contexts. This led to a clue that didn't actually translate, so people have trouble figuring it out. You just gotta know how to get past.
Also, The Werefrog want to see how you react to spending 250 rupees on that ring, if you do.
I suspected the Japanese clue was better. The game is otherwise too well designed, so the "grumble, grumble" room sticks out like an eyesore.
The weapons in this game are great. Every Zelda fan needs to play this game!
Love watching you do zelda.....one of my favorite games ever. One of my proudest moments as a kid was beating it.......twice with no help. You are going to have to beat it again man....please :)
Hopefully, he'll replay this again but with all the hearts and all the item upgrades
Taking on 7 after doing 6 is always nice. Watching him enter that 2nd blue darknut room to get the recorder was great too. 😅
Ryu: " I really want that heart"
Then proceeds to ignore the boomerang exists.
Tbf, I didn't think of the boomerang despite playing Twilight Princess as my first Zelda title. Lol
Yeah I don't think he's noticed that functionality.
Great job, Ryu! I 100% agree when you said 6 is harder than 7, but 7 is its own breed of difficult. Although when I was a kid, I had all the time in the world to go bomb every wall and burn every tree in the game haha. I'm sure tons of people will already be talking about the meat and the recorder trivia, so I'll just say the red candle was my second favorite weapon in the game! I always wished this game let you choose another item for the "A" button slot instead of your sword (like Link's Awakening would eventually do) and I could have the magic rod in one hand, and the candle in the other like some kind of fireball throwing wizard! In Bloodborne, one of my favorite bosses is the scimitar/candle wielding guy who is part of the Shadows of Yharnam fight haha :)
"Dodongo dislikes smoke"
"Well I dislike YOU!"
We made that exact same joke when we were kids in 1986.
Ryu: I got the whole Triforce!
Realizes the piece he got was a triangle not a square
Ryu: 😲
[surprised Pikachu face]
Who's going to tell him that the boomerang picks up dropped items
I still have all my graph paper maps that have 1988 on them with my name. My grandpa babysat me every Saturday and for weeks we beat both quests and my parents and grandma even did not know we had a Nintendo secretly hidden in the spare bedroom. He had his busch beer, i had my moxie and we snacked always on weird polish dishes my grandpa made for just us ......awe memories....love you dziadek(Grandpa in polish)
18:30 "There's a secret... in the tip... ... of the nose???"

Watching Ryu blast 2 out of the 3 walls and then walking away saying “nope nothing here’ is beyond frustrating
Great series, cheers ryu!
this is the ryu content i live for, love when you do retro shit my guy
Greetings from the BIG SKY. Zelda I will always be a favorite of mine.
YOU ARE AMAZING!! It’s so much fun watching you play this game. Can’t wait to see how you get by the last dungeon.
24:36 insert “whopper whopper whopper” ad
Dont forget to bomb walls in seemingly empty rooms!
Along with your Only Up journey this is one of my favourite RUclips series!
More of the content I needed on this channel
I want to know how long it really took to find dungeon 7. He never visited a fairy fountain and then figures out the flute right away...
I mean, we know he’s looking stuff up, it wouldn’t surprise me
@@Gouka07 you almost have to, i mean if you bought it brand new you had a 80% map and then nintendo power had hints
love to see him do quest 2 blind and 3 hearts
14:52 - You can actually bomb to the right from this room. I'm guessing they did that so the player doesn't get stuck in there. However, the extra benefit from that is that you can bomb *into* that room from the right - thereby skipping the fight with the 3 dodongos entirely.
I may like this series better than mario maker. Would love to see A Link to the Past play through.
Just so ya know bud. The blue ring that costs 250 is a defense upgrade.
Every three heart challenge I've seen skips the rings.
@@bobbyboner6079 did not know that
Ryu, what *WAS* that atrocious accent you attempted in the intro? It's ok, made up for it with the moaning... 😉
3:46 If you use only 1 bomb near him (not in Dodongo's mouth) he will be in smoke and walks slow then you can stab him with your sword in the belly.
Edit : Dw bout wizard Ryu they only be in Dungeon 6 and 9 on normal mode :)
I can see Ryu was about to say hello ladies and gentlemen welcome to legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom and corrected himself to say episode 4
lol, I like how he PRETENDS, he doesn't know where this stuff is or how the game works... Oh i'll try my flute here and surprise it's level 7... Back in the day we had to learn from cryptic hints or nintendo power lol... its all good though still entertaining
Well, what else would you do?…
Yeah makes out he figured it out. Even when he's routing dungeons he's kind of going the exact paths. I could be wrong though
The meat was unnecessarily cryptic but I think the dungeon was fair otherwise. "The secret is in the tip of the nose" made sense once you got the map as the dungeon layout is clearly a big blocky face, and right at the tip of the nose was the secret stairway leading to the boss.
“Sorry for all the moaning, ladies and gentlemen.” - Ryu BasedGod 2023
“It’s so refreshing!”
Nope, you have to get it from his stomach grumble. I came across meat first and put it together as a 8 year old 😅
In case someone hasn't mentioned it already, 'the secret is at the tip of the nose' refers to the map in Dungeon 7... the map looks like a face, and that block you moved was in a room at the end that kinda looks like a nose
leave 1 enemy alive in dungeon rooms that dont drop anything (from killing all enemies in room) and they wont all respawn. Grumble grumble is the hint... His stomach is gurgling
You can leave 1 enemy alive on any screen, even the overworld.
@@macethorns1168 do they respawn after a certain amount of screen transitions? I always assumed they would.
Revisit that ring it's a life saver. You'll understand and a nice change of color for your sprite. You are a fantastic RUclipsr and I love your blind reactions to games I've played, it frustrates and make me laugh at the same time. Keep it up brother. 1 mil subs in no time
That wand sound, is that the same sound as Birdo spewing eggs in Mario2?
24:00 No, there isn't. You're supposed to just know that "grumble, grumble" is his stomach rumbling....
Yeah, I would've been stumped there forever, except I had a friend who managed to figure it out.
I feel like this is a problem of graphical limitations. If the room was full of empty pots & food containers, it might make sense. Or if the 'meat' (monster bait, I think?) had been used to feed someone else anywhere in the game... Just about every item in the game can be used for at least 2 things, but not the meat. Maybe it was easier in Japanese?
I have never anticipated a follow up video so badly.
I always liked dungeon 7. Felt like a nice break from what dungeon 6 puts us through with all the wizrobes. Yeah it's more cryptic, but the thing for the meat really depends on you finding the meat before you get to dungeon 7. It's by chance that someone would have saw a weird item in a shop and got it to hold on to it for later.
lol this has become my favorite series to watch on this channel lately. :)
Ryu, to keep the game difficult, don't touch the ring.
Hmmm he went straight to the specific lake that needs the recorder
That used the same flute sound in Super Mario 3.
Aw man, I was looking forward to you trying to solve the meat part yourself. 😅
Don’t worry, he’s going to love levels 8 and 9 with only 4 hearts
We didn't say it couldn't, we said you shouldn't!
For those who want to play this game normally, the wizards are actually not hard at all, Ryu is just refusing to buy the Magic Shield which blocks the spells the wizards throw out.
I don't know if he's refusing so much as sayiing "I already have on e of those" LOL
The magic shield does not help that much against the blue wizzards. If you are facing them to block, then they will inevitably crash into you and do 2 hearts of damage. Especially since many rooms they appear in are cramped and filled with obstacles. And the Like Likes that often appear with them can eat your magic shield. In my opinion , cramped rooms with blue wizzards are the hardest in the game, even harder than Ganon himself.
The last map looked like a head, and the "cryptic secret" was on the tip of the nose.
Wizzrobe moving left.
Can't wait to see Lvl 8 the hardest dungeon in the entire game lmao
"I think there might be a tip to bring the meat to the weird guy." No....... no there is no hint to that. Man and folks wanna talk about how cryptic NES Metroid is.
My understanding is that in the Japanese text, the "grumble grumble" is clearly meant to be the sound of a stomach rumbling. So you're intended to infer that he's hungry. There's only one item in the game that is food, so that's the hint.
But "grumble grumble" in English just makes him sound like he's disgruntled.
@@christopherlundgren1700 yeah also I heard in the Japanese text at one point is said that Poe's Voice hate loud noises which is a hint to use the mic on the second controller and was left in the English translation which meant it the second controller didn't have a mic.
I was actually made when Grumble Grumble kept the meat because the boomerang dudes would swarm it and you could kill them all at once.
@@macethorns1168 You can just buy a new Bait though, once he takes it. I always did because I had to have the full inventory at the end of the game anyway. Can't stand those unsightly empty spaces.
People do take the Bait for granted. It's a pretty good item.
Ryu's def using an online map/guide
I think it’s more like he’s using online tips when he gets stuck
@@LeeorVardiMost likely. And that’s close to how the game woulda been played if he played it when it was new. Kids all traded secrets at school. I have a lot of memories telling other kids what to do in some spots and vice versa.
Fine with me. He says he did around 23:50. I watch another YTer who will remain unnamed who sometimes agressively refuses any help and bashes their head against a wall making a 8-10 video series into 20+ rage-inducing ones.
@@silky_merkin is it Projared?
Thank God for internet I had to call the Nintendo hotline for that grumble grumble question
Well internet costs money just like phone calls.
I am shocked you figured out the entrance to dungeon 7 so easily. It is a suspicious spot and there is a hint in a cave, but just going immediately for the flute.
in another video we see him try other options, i think the flute was the obvious next choice once he got it.
there is a bit of time jumps in the video too... not taking anything away though... getting through level 6 alone with just 4 hearts and a wooden sword is impressive.
Been waiting for this episode all week!
Excellent! Been waiting for part 4! You're doing great and keep it up!
@1:12 Goirya (pl. Goriyas) are the monsters that chuck boomerangs at you. Have you considered looking up the NES instruction booklet for the game? It is part of the OG Zelda experience. I can't speak for everyone, but I know I read it on the way home. ;)
I think there was a vague to foot the monster bait as well.
…Is it the plural or not?……or both?…
:p
@@phosphorus4 As I don't trust my memory, I looked it up. Singular is "Goriya", plural is with an "s" on the end ("Goriyas").
Ryu figuring out all the cryptic stuff and characters ripping you off is absolutely hilarious.
Something you should know is some walks you can literally walk though, you gotta walk into the wall for like 3 seconds and you'll pass through them. How is that for random bs? XD
The meat is bait, a few types of enemy will swarm around it if you drop a piece. I think we were supposed to leap from that to assuming that's what a stubborn guard would want before he's willing to move. I never figured it out either...
Or you were supposed to…be Japanese and read a stomach rumbling sound in the FamiCom version?…
"I feel like this game would be fun to speedrun." The sheer number of frame-perfect glitches used in modern speedruns of this game would like to differ, lol. Of course, if you don't include glitchless, there's still a ridiculous amount of technical info you need to learn to play competitively.
Oof I even forgot about the meat
Hey Ryu... Love the videos... You should try the no sword run. You can defeat everything except Ganon. Anyway God bless man.
I've been living for this original play through!!
Dude. Maybe my flute works here now. NO FREAKING WAY he didn't have help. If not, dude....
Old barbarous king took forever to figure out the meat thing. If your ever in his stream say grumble grumble. 😂
Re: Grumble, Grumble
No. There's no hint. It's a maddeningly obtuse puzzle.
1:10 Those are Goriya, and their concept are shows them as more doglike. The moblins are the orange and black dudes in the overworld that shoot arrows at you.
5:40 Those are Pols Voice.
15:10 It's funny, because the famicom version has a microphone built into the controller, and blowing into the microphone DOES kill those. Subsequent games also have them vulnerable to sound items.
I'd also like to point out that the boomerang can be thrown diagonally.
Dude.... do yourself a favor and find a copy of the manual and read it. There is SOOO much basic helpful info in it that was day one available for anyone who got the game. It would answer a lot of your questions as well as a few you haven't asked yet.
You're really bad at this game. The wand is the WORST weapon in the game. The boomerang freezes enemies. Why aren't you using the boomerang? That way you don't get hit by anyone. Again...they freeze.
First off, I am loving this series and look forward to every episode... your ability to make it through the Darknut rooms as you did makes me jealous af... but, my dude... if you don't start using your dungeon map on the item screen you are gonna have a hell of a time in 8 and 9. You are right that there is no physical indication of where to blow walls but if you look at the map every now and again you can kinda figure it out. Keep up the good work! I look forward to watching the end game of this with only 4 hearts. I have no doubt that you will keep my anxiety triggered to 100! 😂
I know the comments aren't read in realtime, to avoid spoilers, but for general info:
The darknuts bouncing wildly in the wrong direction is because of that juking motion you do, where you attack then immediately reverse direction. When you hit an enemy with any attack, the game calculates the collision as though it were coming from the direction you're *currently* facing. So if you hit someone with your weapon, then reverse direction mid-collision-calculation, it will register it as though you had attacked it from the other side. This primarily matters for purposes of knockback from your weapon strikes, as seen in the video, but also affects whether directional enemies, like darknuts, take damage at all.
This effect also applies to bombs, which do not hit enemies from the direction of the explosion hitting them, but count as though you were attacking in the direction you're facing when the bomb goes off. So a darknut facing left will 'block' your bomb if you happen to be facing right, even if the explosion was below, above, or behind them.
Did Ryu ever finish his playthrough of Zelda 2 from back in the day? I saw part 1 pop up, but couldn't seem to find a part 2 anywhere.
You have 4 hearts not 3🙄🙄 challenge not completed I'm afraid.. Go back and try again and this time kill the level 1 boss with a bomb and stand behind him before it explodes. You can bypass the heart that way. This is not low%
there are no in-game hints for the grumble grumble outside Nintendo Power which had this game in its first issue but covered second quest, but that also has 2 dungeons that grumble grumble. they did have an official Nintendo players guide which covered zelda 1 and the first quest and it.
it's one of the more BS puzzles
The "grumble grumble" guy is legendarily bullshit. It's basically bad translation. You're supposed to realize he's hungry because his stomach is growling. I never got past it as a kid even though I had the meat.
I've never beaten this game, so I'm glad to be able to watch someone more skilled than I to absolute obliterate it XD
lol...who said this couldn't be done? People have been doing three heart and swordless runs for years. Over a decade for sure.
Hiw long did you try figure out grumble grumble beore you looked it up?
Im not sure if theres a way to figure it out.
(I was about 10 when this game was new, and we'd meet up at school every day and share what we figured out. The was no internet to look it up, but we didnt just do it all on our own either.)
You can grab stuff with the boomerang.
The bait attracts some of the dumber enemies (so you can bomb them easily).
The dodongos shouldn't be fed bombs. Hit them with the explosion and then stab them when they are paralyzed.
I have NEVER seen such use for the wand like this. Incredible.
Even my first playthrough of this was with the assistance of Nintendo Power, so massive kudos, lol - I am *hooked* on watching this!
Ryu, I don't know if you know, but you can block projectile, like boomerang and arrows, just by facing it without using your sword or item
The rabbit like creatures are called Pols Voice.
In the Japanese original version, the second controller on the Famicom could be used to kill all the Pols Voice in a room with a voice.
It ain't easy being green.
