The original Western port of Final Fantasy IV(II) on Super Nintendo removed most of the character-specific actions like Darkness and Pray, and severely nerfed the overall difficulty; at this point JRPGs hadn't taken off in the West like they had in Japan so Square assumed it was because we were too dum dum for them and so gave us a watered-down version of their FF IV. The Pixel Remaster is based off the original Japanese release.

Its ironic they thought this yet they were inspired by dungeons and dragons and games like wizardry and ultima. Those were us and british based games so its ironic they didnt release a single ff in europe till 7. And they thought americans were just unga bunga
That DS Remake reintroduced all of that and damn, was it rough! Loved it though, and the amount of shenanigans you can get into with the character skills and buffs was awesome.
I got to chaos at about level 40 in less than 5 hours, exp gain at 4x and encounters off (most of the time)

Nobou Uematsu is a composing genius! His music fed my childhood. Final Fantasy will always hold an incredibly huge spot in my heart.

Unskippable cutscenes are kind of an old Square Soft/ENIX trademark.
I don't get why people choose to play JRPGs and complain about it having story. One of the main things JRPGs have been praised for since... *checks notes* Final Fantasy 1.
Regarding FFIV, you're remembering the FF2 US version, which greatly simplified the abilities characters had and reduced enemy damage IIRC, as well as slightly highlighting some of the hidden pathways and the like. In pretty much every release since then more abilities were given back on the US side, and sometimes added (like with the GBA version).
The craziest part of Prelude to Light, that classic Final Fantasy intro, is that Uematsu basically wrote it at the last second and didn't think much about it. The fact that it might genuinely be his greatest work is astounding
I missed all the FF games before VI, so I'd love to see a longplay series on each of them. These games are gorgeous, though. I especially love the effects and how they keep that low bit aesthetic, but are obviously being done with much stronger hardware.
Your warrior got that much exp because the rest was dead, so he got all of it instead.

With these modifiers, it make it so a casual can maxi-grind primo spots and turn off encounters in crappy areas, or say, for example, en route to a boss fight. I like it because it allows everyone to choose their own play style.

I just now realized I had never actually seen the world map of FF4 all at once until this very RUclips video. I've beaten that game a few times times and played the Free Enterprise randomizer dozens of times, but not ONCE have I actually looked up a world map.

In FF1 it's the random encounters that make it just as brutal. I am in the middle of a run on my mini NES(at the water temple) with a mage only party, RM/RM/BM/WM and having a blast, the music is so damn good.
I love this particular set up, so much magic power without a total sacrifice of physical power. Ice Cave is another brutal section on NES unless you get lucky on encounters. It's the one dungeon that always catches me off guard despite knowing what to expect.
@@kaia.4688 yeah, it takes some build up because all those spells are expensive to get, but then you can flare away.

I do have to admit that the Kraken totally wrecked my party, he took me some grinding.
The kraken can one shot anyone with his physical attacks. He is stupid hard sometimes. I got this game when it's came out originally. Had them up to 8 and played religiously. These and cronotrigger and I'd be content on a desert island.
I had all these on ps1 so it's great seeing these again

I'd love to see you do a full challenge run. I think 4x would be necessary for end-game bosses though.
The cutscenes already existed in the GBA version. You are able to skip the cutscenes in the GBA if you start a game, watch the first cutscene, save, reset and start a new game.

I just bought these for PS4! And the best part is, I'm off the next two days. Can't wait to spend them playing some of my favorite games!

@@linkzz00 Maybe. Hahaha. FF4 I could definitely beat in a weekend, but that's the one I know the best. The rest might take a few extra days each.
This is inspired me to try the FF1 challenge run with no random encounters. I left the multipliers default. Those piscodemons were actually one of the biggest hurdles. But, after defeating them with a preemptive strike I was high leveled enough to get my first multi target black magic attack spell. The game is generous with money in chests and monsters in chests for leveling. I didn’t have a ton of trouble and ended up fighting Chaos at level 24. After 5-6 attempts I got the god rng where he didn’t wipe me out with one of his heavy spells or use curaja on himself to recover 9999 hp. All told it took 7 hours on the game clock. A very fun challenge.
I used to try FF6 Low level natural magic challenge, back when I made my RUclips account actually. It's completely plausible to beat the game with minimal experience (Mag Roaders in the Magitek Facility are the only forced EXP gain), but it requires meticulous planning. I would love to see you at least try it! The first Ultros fight is madness

I'm a huge metal head, but dancing mad is my jam above anything else. And the black mages albums are some of my favorite albums.
My second favorite song of his is battle on the big bridge.
It's important to remember that level up bonuses in the earlier games aren't set in stone, so it's a gamble if you'll get meaningful bonuses to hp or stats each time. The variance is between 2hp only to 30hp and +1 to all but 1 stat if I remember correctly. So just gaining a couple level isn't always a garuntee to help.
I played FF1 this past month and got like 5 levels in a row for my Black Mage where they didn't gain any meaningful stats.

I have the Steam version of FF1 Pixel Remaster and it doesn't have the "Boost" option for XP/Gil modifiers still as of Dec 2023.
These challenge runs sound amazing. I'd say start with the 4x Exp and 2x Gil with no encounters first. If that seems too easy adjust as you go but I'm 100% on board watching all of it.
Is that a wii u pro controller? How do you use it on switch? Is there any input lag? 😮
So I decided to buy the games just to try out these boost options. I did the challenge. No random encounters, 4x XP, 4x Gil. I know there are some repeatable mobs in the game (if you zone out and back in) but I did not repeat ANY battles except for the one in the Ice Cavern where you have to fight it twice after falling twice. I did clear 100% of all chests and did all fixed encounters exactly once (except for one which made no difference in my level).
By Chaos, I was level 37. I had to fight him 15 times before RNG favored me and I won. The rest of the game was very easy (Knight/Master/Red/Red) but the last boss was a HUGE difficulty spike.
I did eventually win so I know it's possible, but the spike for the last boss was just silly. I wish it scaled in difficulty more fluidly.
yeah for some reason they PUMPED Chaos full of stats. like a friend of mine fought him at level 50, had the best gear available with a team of knight, red, black and white. and while no character died got really close a few times due to RNG AoE spells htting hard.
Decided a while back to go through and beat every single mainline FF game in order, starting with the first one, having never beat any of them before. I recently just completed FFIV, which is so far my favorite. I hear good things about VI tho.
FFVI is epic and the “ best” in the series your in for a treat !!!!

I didn't play VI until I'd already played VII. After I finished VI I considered them to be a tie, quality-wise. They're both so, so good

Where do i pick THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL of the game? I picked a difficulty at the very beginning, I started a new character and it wont let me pick a difficulty, Am i doing something wrong?

The random encounters in FF4 are genuinely dangerous. Right out of the gate, you can go up against Helldivers, which are faster than you, and will cause petrification if they hit a character twice. They can easily cause a wipe before you even get a turn.
That's why turning it off helps so much (and get quadruple gil let alone exp types). Ff1 chests, ff2 trap doors, and ff6 magic only fanatics tower you can't even teleport on the way down (and speeding up multiple parties like phoenix/kefka, and half exp pre esper to minmax level stat gains later given autocrossbow is broken early game). I thought the pixel remaster for ff4 was easier. I do feel red mage works in ff1 if you do not use a monk, who will take heavy magic damage.
Console PR defines quality of life even if item drop/steal rates are low (good luck ff3 onion equipment drops, and it's character level 99 not job level) and no cutscene skip (opera house timing was annoying to throw roses lol and no cutscene viewer but youtube helps for all the languages, at least ff6 has original music).
I do feel ff4 on psp with interlude and even bad after years Edward solo/level cap is still definitive, loke how 3d adds a ton (augments though 3 to mysidia twins for dualcast, voice acting and golbez backstory which subtly explains how Ceodore from after years got his name ie Cecil/Theodore) while reducing ds difficulty on normal (hard mode makes a dash to the inn perilous with barely affording it).
Final Fantasy IV is my favorite. It's the first I ever played back in 2006 and I was a kid during the initial release. It's so good. The ability to turn off encounters is a godsend
I'm currently on a project to beat all of them in order, never having beaten any of them before. I just finished IV. Its so far my favorite. It has a lot in common with II. I have a theory that some time after the development for FFII started, a second team was created, a B Tam if you will, to pump out games more regularly. I think II, IV and VI were from A Team. and III and V were from B Team.

I dunno, unless you can get into fights on specifc squares you can level up on no encounters ff1. x4 could allow you to have any party makeup. you could go less on different party members. I would have to see what rewards the boat mini game is you could get as much gil as you need if you can win the 15 number puzzle.
Can you kill the monsters in chests for the first 1? Or would that be too much exp and gold?

Would love to see the crazy runs in this (and the other remaster) games, but you gotta change that font option to classic instead of the terrible 'modernized' one, even if it costs a couple seconds 😄

Looks like a fun challenge for a video. It looks like keeping everyone alive the whole time will be key. Not getting experience in one boss fight might make the next one impossible.

Edwards heal ability is actually using your potions from the inventory, so careful with that one, especially on challenge runs lol
That's why it sucks to use it but at least they made Pray Rosa go from 100% useless to restoring as much HP as using a Cure 2 spell on the entire party in that it restores 100+ HP when it works on EVERY OTHER version it barely restored HP that even CURE 1 restores on the entire party as in barely 30 HP.
Yet another reason Edward sucks.

Here's a run I did in FF 3
>4x EXP and 4x Gil in boss fights and chest enemies (ironically, there is only 1 in regular games until you reach Forbidden Land)
>0x EXP and 0x Gil in normal fights
>random encounters OFF unless you are grinding job levels
>jobs must be grinded near Ur while fighting Goblins
>no Steal command
>no equipment farming

Those FF1 cutscenes are from the ports. Dawn Of Souls is where majority saw them for the first time.

thing is you can't just brute force progress, u do need to prepare properly, as that second boss only the one got that exp boost so of course it didn't go well, never intended, challenge runs still require working with the game
and random encounters aren't bad just about their implementation that needed fixings and even then aren't a bad mechanic
I belive the FFIV 'moves' you referred to were in the original but were removed when they ported it to the US as FFII in the 90s. (The conversion team made the game somewhat simpler - and easier - because they didn't think the American audience was ready for the complexity based on whatever barometers they were reading)
I've already finished ff1 about 4 years ago, probably going to just for the trophies with the modifiers (supposing that they don't void trophies), but the other games? Never finished those so I'm going to farm them
I bought and am playing the FF4 pixel remake. FF4 is my favorite game of all time. It's one of the first games I beat as a kid. I wish they had made it so you can skip cut scenes also lol

I started playing this last night for the first time in almost 30 years. The part where you go get the crown in the dungeon. holy crap was that a pain in the ass.this game makes you eat through items so fast!
You can't go right in there for sure. Gotta do some grinding first.

@@Kev-O33 I haven't played that in probably thirty years. It was extremely broken on the NES as well, supposedly. A whole bunch of spells didn't work, stats that weren't active. Bunch of shit that didn't exist until 25 years later when people accessed and decoded the programming. I remember the manual said it would require 30 to 40 hours of gameplay to complete the game. I thought that was a strange thing to assert but there was no explanation why it would. Once I learned how to play, I remember my first completed game took 22 hours. Which was like a year in real time in 1987. If you were fortunate enough to even have a Nintendo. Mom want gonna let you spend more than an hour on that thing, go outside! Not to mention if you were playing, most l likely it was going to be something 2 player so brother or friends could play. Playing video games was absolutely nothing like what it has become. It was serious business, and it was hard to devote your limited time to any one game when there were so many, and new ones every week. What a time to grow up it was!

This would be perfect for 2 and 3. Maxing spells to 16 in 2 and getting to 99 in 3 is an intolerable grind.
I’m playing 6 right now. I’m in Zozo. Using the 4x gil multiplayer and had an enemy steal 8000 gil. When I beat him it gave me 4x the amount of Gil I had stolen back!😮
Maybe now we can actually afford some of those Auction house items 😏
Unless they changed it, Edward's Heal ability just uses potions from your inventory.
They need a "low encounter rate" option. "Encounters off" is cool, but not having something in between is a bit of an oversight by the devs.
My main critique with the settings of FF4-6 is that they have Wait Mode on, so you'll always have to enter the settings and turn it to Active for every game.

Also. FF6 has a solo challenge. Where u are only allowed to use one character. And depending on the character....the challenge starts as soon as the character joins ur party. So for example. Locke. Lockes solo challenge starts as soon as he joins u. He must be the only party member alive at all times (all other members must be killed) During WoR u must go get him as soon as u get the air ship. Etc. Harder mode. U can't use espers. Must use the characters natural skills/stats
So you dont learn any magic from espers?

i like the pixel remaster version, they are great looking and the quality of life is top notch. Now if they only included all the bonus content from previous versions we could have all the definitive versions in one place, but as it stands i still have to go to my PSP for FF IV, then switch to my GBA for FF V.
I hope they also give the PSX titles a proper remaster treatment, and finally bin those mobile ports they put up as "remaster". FF7-9 deserve better than this.
