😡 I PURCHASED Switch Expansion Pack Service - YOU SHOULDN'T!

- The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack featuring N64 and Sega Genesis Games.....Its a mess right now. From messy emulation issues, terrible controls which cannot be fixed and the online multiplayer service is unplayable due to lag and server issues. How much is the Switch expansion pack service? Too Much! Quite simply it needs a ton of work to make this a worthy upgrade for anyone.

Wait, people DONT want the animal crossing dlc? How come? Just curious I'm out of the loop
When they are forced into getting this pack just to access it they don’t, i perhaps didn’t make it clear enough in my explanation that’s what I was getting at. That’s my autistic ass for ya 🤣
Some of us don't own the game and aren't interested. I don't know what's so difficult to understand
You can just buy it instead of renting it
@@turtleanton6539 You don't understand Why is the ACNH pack in the expansion if people don't have the game that is what one of the reasons people are not getting this.
@@n64glennplant ah, I see. Yeah, I thought getting the n64 expansion along with the animal crossing dlc would be a good idea, but ill just go ahead and buy it separately.
But then again, it's cheaper if you just get the nintendo expansion, so I don't know what the heck to do.
Thanks for putting the service through the paces for us. The price alone made me hesitant to get the expansion, but after your analysis, I definitely agree that it's not worth it.
its a big WAIT for now, maybe things will improve
@@n64glennplant tbh if they had paper mario or a mario party at launch i could see 40
@@FatJesusHangry I couldn't. There shouldn't be a price increase at all without an improvement to the service. The service itself is terrible, and that's what we're paying for.
@@Droogie128 I agree. It's a subscription after all. There'd have to be a MASSIVE improvement to ask for a higher price... Which is what Nintendo claimed when they showcased the Expansion Pack.
@@Droogie128 tbh base service isn't bad the new stuff isn't worth the price
Good thing I repaired my N64
Pulled mine out yesterday and played some Perfect Dark
That’s the best way to play still my a country mile isn’t it 😄
I love N64 games but playing a 240p resolution game on a 55 inch tv ain't pretty. At that point I just play them on my OG modded xbox at 480 or 720p they look amazing. And play great. But playing 3d games on n64 is a rough experience. Only I would do it on a CRT
@@n64glennplant N64 games on a nice Sony Trinitron or a PVM is still as good as it gets as far as retro games go for me, N64 looks great @ 240p with scanlines, it looks even beter @ 480i (unlike the 16Bit consoles which look better @ 240p), Perfect Dark for instance has a cheat code to enable 480i but the FPS tanks, which is why I am really looking forward to the N64 Mister FPGA core, which will alow native 480i hopefully @ full speed FPS, on a 4:3 display via RGB scart it will be amazing, I bet it will look incredible on a PVM/BVM or an arcade monitor, 480i & scanlines with native lag free N64 gamplay will be perfection for me, another console which really benifits from 480i is the PS1, just that as it does on N64 the FPS tanks when forced @ 480i, so also waiting on the PS1 Mister core as well. Of course the Mister will probalby enable higher resolutions than 480i, but that's the top resolution of the average SD 4:3 CRT, and that is all I am really interested in playing the N64 on, 480i is the seet spot for N64 & PS1 imo.
Unfortunately, my ex stole my N64 and many of my games. I’m not even mad about the financial angle of it; I’m upset about how many memories come from those games and I can’t play them anymore.
I have been keeping up with the mounting problems with the Expansion Pack. This shows that Nintendo did the equivalent of "putting the cart before the horse" and just dumped the ROMs "as is" without double-checking for errors.
That makes exactly what they did 🙃
Putting the cartridge before the horse.... I'll see myself out.

From a lifelong Nintendo fan, this expansion pack really felt like a giant kick in the nuts.
Yes, they lied about banjo kazooie.

No. It’s like a nice cannonball in the nuts
I was already not a fan of this expansion pack and hearing about the emulation issues with this service pretty much confirmed that I am not missing anything. Great video, Glenn!
Thanks mario kart hero!
There are only 8 games. Of course you're not missing much 😆
In a year when those underlying issues are fixed and games catalog have expanded for both N64 and Genesis/Mega Drive, it then may be worth a look. Maybe.
@@FernandoDCDuarte That would actually mean that Nintendo would have to do work. We all know they won't.
@@n64glennplant LOL.
Criticism that no one can buy it → Buy it for review → Criticism as the viewer wants.
Even though the video contributor originally had no intention of complimenting the expansion pack.
If you're not interested, ignore it.
If you understand the contents and buy it, but criticize the contents, is the screw on your head broken?
If you don't like it, don't buy it.
What a person feels is free.
But don't impose your values on others.
It's great to earn views and high ratings just by criticizing!
@@n64glennplant I was never much of a fan of emulation in most cases. Not because of so-called "piracy concerns", but because of graphical artifacts and in some cases, sound glitches not present in original hardware.
The increased price is absolutely ridiculous, especially when most N64 emulators can offer a far better experience. I appreciate that Nintendo are trying to get these great games to a wider audience, but honestly I can't see many of their fans bothering. The main draw of NSO was the online features, this upgrade just tacks on two emulators and DLC for one game that most Switch owners probably don't have.
this should have all been in the NSO price, forget the mega drive games which nobody wants and boom they then had full control over price and it didn't cost them anything extra.
Well I'm sure a whole ton of Switch owners have Animal Crossing. It did incredibly well. It's a shit dlc though imo
@@thebigbean8783 but you have to realize that a third of all switch owners isn’t everyone. I like to make the comparison of you want to buy a cookie at a convenience store(N64 games). This cookie is delicious and cost effective. Suddenly you now have to buy this cookie with an expensive salad that a lot of people like but you don’t(animal crossing dlc). Would you be happy? Of course not
It's 80$ for something that's free if you use an emulator, lol. Imagine being such a fan boy that you see nothing wrong with that.
@@andreivaldez2929 Imagine being a thief and thinking you're entitled to a game because it's old! Everyone publisher is selling their old stuff. You act like this is a Nintendo thing only
This made me start emulating. Thank you Nintendo, you got me to play all my old favorites
Congratulations on your freedom. Ive been emulating for many years. And all these programs Nintendo online are churning out are pretty much emulators too, except they are badly made with stolen code. Best way to play classic games, other their original platform or with a flashcart, is to play on a PC emulator with a USB controller.
Like i play GameCube on dolphin with a USB 4 port and an original controller. All on my laptop. Same with Gameboy advance, psp, ps1, n64. And with my dslite i have a r4 flashcart (got a gba flashcart on my wishlist, will have it by December) and my 3ds has CFW so ive filled it with games from nes/snes to gba/ds. And of course select 3ds titles. I have a wiiu with CFW as well that i use to play Zelda BOTW. And two CFW PS3s that i rarely use nowadays and only have cause ps3 emulation isnt that good especially on my laptop.
Dont let these big companies milk your nostalgia for money if they arnt gonna put the necessary effort into the product. Especially when there are free alternatives that are better and have had years of effort and improvement.
I feel the lure to go down the same path. I see some pretty amazing emulations for OoT 3DS. Looks stunning.
I was definitely waiting to hear some feedback on the service and no one I'm subscribed to is more fitted to comment on it than you
Considering Nintendo can't seem to do more than half-ass backwards compatibility of their legacy content, I can't say I'm surprised. Too bad, I was looking forward to an Ocarina run this fall
Yeah it’s so weird that I don’t think I could actually go through playing OOT on the service it’s that poor
As a real hardware enthusiast I know this kind of service isn't for me but witnessing Nintendo dropping the ball so badly across the board lately has been so sad that they might as well be just another greedy tech giant rather than the last bastion of the old guard.
From one hardware enthusiast to another - they be properly effed this switch service up big time. Let’s stick to what works 🤣
Accept it, friend: they *are* just another greedy tech company.
64's my favorite console, but I'm honestly done supporting Nintendo.
And sadly, I'm actually seeing people defend it/claiming the input lag "doesn't exist" etc. - the post-purchase rationalization is incredibly strong with Nintendo fanboys.
they have been a greedy tech giant for a while....
@@AlquimistEd they have been since the Famicom. I don't get why people act like this is anything new, or how Iwata's or Reggie's presence made any difference.

When Nintendo catches up and gives me the basics that have been in play in online gaming since ‘06 I’ll buy in. I need messaging, achievements and at least a private chat system. I can’t justify buying this without having the basics of online functionality.
I know exactly how you feel
You mean 2002. Xbox live launched with more features than NSO offers.
It's Nintendo... Even though most of their playerbase is 30 years old and above they still operate under the premise that's it's a family or kids console thats why they will never implement simple features the rest of the gaming world has already done for years... If it wasn't for the select few Nintendo ips I would never buy a Nintendo console ever again they are just so behind on everything.

@@Droogie128 you mean mid 90s where you could play Diablo and text chat with your friends whilst playing.
Hi Glenn! Been a fan for a few years now and I must say I totally agree with your suggestion to skip the service. What got me interested was the announcement of a wireless N64 controller made by Nintendo. I was hoping that Nintendo would start assembling Nintendo 64 controllers for the Switch AND for those who still play on original hardware, but sadly that was not the case. So on top of paying more for the service, you have to pay 50 Dollars American for the controller. It's just bad all around. Great video!
Thank you for the honest review. I signed up for the “Expansion pack” mainly for the ACHN content. Having 3 family members that want the ACNH content at $24.99 each signing up for a $79.99 family pack (they pro rated to $76.99 for the existing time I had left on my year) it was a no brainer for me. I’ve got a 5 year old who will love Mario 64, Mario kart 64, and Sonic 2 because she loves the games and doesn’t know any better that there are graphics flaws. They got my money for this year’s round of antics.
Very good points there!
6:44 - Shots fired. The 90s console wars live on😂
Haha long gone sadly but if someone actually wanted genesis games they’d have got the genesis collection for switch by now
It's honestly unforgivable to me that my Wii and WiiU are stocked with an amazing list of BC games and Nintendo decided to forego most of that with the Switch. Always too little too late with them nowadays.
we need some GB on the service for free I think!
@@n64glennplant GB would be badass. Maybe include some of the expensive ones like they did on 3DS.
GBC and GBA would be even better. I picked up several GBA titles on WiiU VC years ago and they were brilliant! In fact, I should go buy a few more like Aria or Sorrow and Metroid Zero Mission before they close the store.
I did get a GBA this year, but some of the games I want are just too expensive. 😔
No we need Gamecube so we can play Melee on the switch, if they actually put GameCube on the switch for 50, I would actually pay that price, although, GBA games would awesome.
@@jackfblades7528
Having ol' iterations of a title still supported by the company today doesn't seem likely to happen truly;
_Specially_ Melee, seeing how supportive and hardcore the fanbase.
Hear me out: It would most likelly attract Melee players to the console (if done right) but even if they're enough to be cuantificable, there's still the problem with "outshining" modern SSBs.
Hey Glenn. I think the increased high end in the sound is likely due to the switch having enough CPU power to output at 48kHz sample rate.
N64 often had to compress the audio to a lower sample rate, I've heard audio processing was shared with graphics processing on the system and that's why multiplayer often cut or decreased the quality of the music.
You can do a quick wiki for Nyquist rate if you're interested in how sample rates work!
Very useful to know !
Speaking from a Die hard N64 fan POV N64 is the 1st console i owned at 4 years old now at almost 30 with kids of my own i want to share the experience with but the lack of shortage problems due to scalpers and Nintendo not having the foresight really grind my gears i had to button map my joy cons just to play the N64 another point i would like to make is that the price increase does not justify a mediocre online gaming experience in 2021 with the most basic of functions such a sending a text message to a friend on your friend list or to download more streaming apps besides hulu such as Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Hbo Max, etc. To put things in a financial point of view my subscription dose not end until 5/15/21 yet i only got an abysmal 10$ discount this is unfortunate since i had a 100$ in Eshop funds and thanks to the ridiculous steep price increase i only have 58$ in my account...sad i really was hoping i was gonna have enough $ for the new GTA trilogy or Pokemon Diamond now... Guess i just have to donate some blood or sperm.. or an organ
As far as the game selection goes i would've personally preffererd to buy each game individually instead of waiting hoping i get something good in the next update. Also Winback and all the games plz include more options i had the inverted controls looking left and right its insanity dont get me wrong i like my brain to be challenged but i feel mentally challenged trying to adjust to non modern comtrols i hope they fix this issue with golden eye which will inevitably come out
@Walther Penne The N64 doesn't have a DSP either; RSP's SIMD instructions are reused for audio sampling. The N64 temporarily suspends the rendering display list, does a bit of audio, then goes back to filling the framebuffer.
Nintendo siendo un usurero, codicioso, ladrón, estafador, chupasangre y avaro con el cobro de 64.
I just bought my own switch and this video was really helpful! I will wait until they come out w a quality expansion pack!
Hi Glenn, thanks for the video. I do agree, when I saw the price I was in shock. I'm a huge N64 fan but knew when I saw the announcement of the service that it wouldn't be good. I love them but Nintendo seem to do the bear minimum with re-release type things (like mario 3d all stars for example)
I wish they'd put a bit more care and love into things like this.
"Stock controller" as in the Joycons? Yeah... The analog sticks on each aren't comfortable in general lmao. The way they're designed are for portability rather than accuracy. But even then if you want to upgrade to a Pro Controller (a massive upgrade), I hope you do it for other Switch games (like I did for Splatoon 2 - totally worth it cause I always come back at it) rather than playing the classic ones. There are other options for emulation besides that console after all... Alternatives that don't require a subscription.
Something that surprised me about the Switch's internet is Modern Vintage Gamer's finding that Ethernet possibly won't give you faster connection, due the shared bandwidth with the console's USB C video and audio, and the other USB ports. He talks in detail on his OLED review.
Imo Nintendo is trying a bit too hard on offering expensive options... Like why else would they bundle N64, Genesis, and other games' DLC (who says it's only gonna be Animal Crossing) all in one subscription? That killed my interest on even trying lmao... I was really looking forward to playing online - even with mediocre connectivity, but I don't have an income to throw money at what I already knew is a subpar offering. I can't really think of any of my friends who are willing to do the same - only one of them (apparently) is in an good financial situation, and he doesn't want to try.
exactly, the ethernet port and wifi chip just done work as they should do when compared to other consoles.
@@n64glennplant I mean, regarding to this video, I agree. I assume emulation wouldn't leave room for coding a better online experience (unless you're Kaze), so we're bound to the hardware's limitations.
That being said, if internet was bad, I wouldn't had spent nearly 1.2k hrs on Splatoon 2 lmao I am a somewhat demanding gamer as well.
yes, stock controllers are the ones that come with the system.
I'm not a fan of the joy cons at all enless in handheld mode. Trying to play metroid dread in docked mode with the joy con grip is horrible. They feel cheap and the L and R buttons are a clicky mess. Need to get me a pro controller
@@AwakeByDesignFAN69 Yeah my joycons haven't really been detached from the console since I got the Pro controller. Only exception I can remember was when I tried one of the Arms demo... And even then it was kinda weird with the right stick being extruded right on the center of the controller.
The music volume goes down in Mario Kart 64 when you’re hit or slip on a banana but the volume never goes back up to normal volume.
Also, we need scanlines asap.
Bad pixelation at points.
Nintendo’s best emulate attempt was their first on the Wii, it’s not even that quality :/
I know right I was thinking the same thing!
They REMOVED the crt filter. Here I was thinking they'd give you a library of filters for the extra money. Options, themed borders, SOMETHING.

I wasn't planning on getting it, but my friend invited me into his family plan, so I guess I have it now. The emulation definitely needs work, but it at least gives me an excuse to try out the original Sin & Punishment.
I did the same with my friends. We all pitched in 10$ for the family plan and now we have a years worth
I just did the opposite. I canceled. And its expired lol. My kid don't play his switch anymore since he's older now, and the rest of my friends are gonna have to pay their own now haha
@@redbeardnj And I'm gonna get into emulation since their are so many games I feel like Nintendo are never going to release again like Axelay and Mischief Makers. I really would've liked to play them on Switch too.
I honestly think this service is bad, but I'm also on a family plan and not the person paying, so it doesn't matter. But it's still sad that playing emulators on PC is still more viable for me, at the moment.

@@n64glennplant yeah, I've 600Mb fiber but with the Switch is always a WiFi problem and maybe Nintendo servers. For me the feel with the joystick was the big problem with Mario kart. Anyway, I've had a great time!
Yeah, it’s actually Nintendo’s servers. Even if you use an Ethernet connection, the Switch’s speeds are severely limited compared to what you would get on other consoles of this generation or PC. It’s frustrating that Nintendo still hasn’t nailed down good online functionality, and now they’re asking you to pay $49.99 for the service + N64 and Genesis games (and I guess Animal Crossing DLC).
@@rustylasagna it's not Nintendo's servers it's peer to peer so it's all down to latency which no amount of bandwidth will fix.

Amen to that!
Yes Goemon would be amazing
As we all know, Nintendo will milk everything they can with their classics. They know outside emulators are hard to stop so they figure why not make money out of it instead. I get it, however, if you're going to put it out there then do it for the fans. Make the expansion experience worth it. They didn't even include most of the games and I know why. They are thinking of remakes. First, they screwed up on the Zelda anniversary, then they kept quiet about Switch pro and released OLED (milking it) instead; Skyward Sword Amiibo? and now this expansion pack. Why did they time the Mario Collection? Also, their first party titles never rarely drop below $30 (sale). None of this equates to them even listening/hearing it out from their fan base. Oh and any fanmade games/items will be taken down quickly. I love Nintendo games, but will never defend their greed. Their business strategy has not broke yet, so they won't fix it.
2:10 "eye-watering price that they're asking for it" hahaha very true
😄
Not played it online, but I played through Yoshi's story this morning and loved it. It was my first N64 game I got when I was ten and it holds very special memories to me. I remember my Mum taking me to Ex Electrical to buy the console after about a year of saving and doing odd jobs. That may over ride me noticing things, but can't say I noticed any issue with controls and emulation. I really enjoyed it. Again, this is all I have tried from it! But my initial reaction based on that is a positive one. I should mention that I got this as part of a group plan where I pay just 10 pounds a year now. This is less than I was paying for a standard individual plan, so can't complain really. For full price? I am not sure that I would have signed up straight away though. They should offer monthly for those that just want to play a few choice games for a while. Or, just not hiked the price so much.
Yeah the minimum 1 year plan is a joke
This is why I wait and watch some reviews before committing to getting something like this. I was excited to play OOT again, which is a game myself and my brother who died in Afghanistan used to play together when we were younger. Appreciate the honesty! I won't be wasting money on this, and I hope Nintendo sees how big of a flop this "extra" content is with a lack of subscribers....

Star wars rougue squadron never plays well on emulator if that gets included that's a big opportunity to play it without lag and graphical glitches.
Been seeing some comments from people that also said the same issues: no remappable controls, input lag, sound emulation issues being the main issues people have.
Kind of a bummer, hoping they get to polish up the experience a bit as I did manage to get a couple of the N64 controllers and plan to use them lol.
its a shame because the emulation scene has had all of those features for years but Nintendo isn't allowing players to remap and things like that - makes the games so hard to play combined with poor online
You can remap the controls in the Switch system settings.
So for me, even with the emulation issues, the expansion pass makes sense for my group of friends cuz we have 7 people on a family plan, most of whom want the Animal Crossing DLC, so we are essentially all paying an extra $6 per person for what would be $25 per person without. People online generally have the attitude of "but you lose it if you cancel your subscription," and my thought is that I doubt any of us are gonna be playing the new animal crossing stuff after a 2nd full year of AC. I also seriously doubt that ACNH dlc will be the only dlc included with the pass. If I'm wrong, we can go back to the old plan next year. At this point the promise of portable Banjo Kazooie, og Majora's Mask, and Paper Mario are just bonuses for me.
I have a hard time justifying the solo price, but a group with the family plan is very reasonable.
That’s one example where maybe it’s worth it so glad you’re all wanting that dlc - I definitely don’t
This just makes me glad my dad backed up all of his old physical games years ago as roms.
I've been playing Nintendo 64 since its release in 1996 and I currently own a pvm monitor and my original system. Seeing as the N64 is one of my favorite systems of all time I had to try the online service. Thank you for uploading this video so quickly as I was looking forward to your opinions. Hopefully Nintendo will have an update that will fix some of these issues sooner than later.
I doubt they will sadly
@@n64glennplant at least give us button mapping.
You know it's a sad state of affairs when the SELLING POINT of this service is the online multiplayer and it doesn't WORK all that well.
And you know what, BIG props to you for spreading the word around. Heck... The newbies deserve to have a great experience like we did when WE were younger ya know?
It also doesn't help that you have to go ALL IN with this one. You can't just get N64 or JUST SEGA Genesis an pay a smaller fee overall. "All or nothing" is the name of the game and I'm not too hot on that when it comes to this service update and the current price point.
Remember when Nintendo's online was _free_ for years and even during the first year of the Switch? I do.
And don’t forget you can get the normal subscription on a monthly or quarterly plan but this is 12 months only
Although I’ve been longing to play OoT on a big screen.... 1) I have zero desire for sega games 2)couldn’t even get the controller for 64 games 3) do not play animal crossing. 4) the N64 games are way too few. I was so excited after the original direct and I was wanting to upgrade to a family pass and get the expansion. I’m kinda glad now that I couldn’t get the controller. The price is horrible for what you get ( or don’t get, I should say). I’ll just stick to the 3ds xl to play Zelda. Or my laptop.
Speaking of Sega, why couldn't have they done Saturn or Dreamcast
Did you have a Nintendo Wii back then and purchase Ocerina of Time from the Wii shop?
@@joshernsteen2066 I had a wii, but life was too busy for me back then and I also couldn’t get used to the motion controls so I never really used it. That sbowboard kids tune in the background gave me goosebumbs.. oww men nostalgia!
I had originally planned on picking it up, but wont be now. You're spot on about the Genesis. I was a Sega kid growing up and I don't need another way to play those games. I really wanted this service for the 64 games. After hearing about all of the issues going on, I'll be holding off until they decide to improve things. Thanks for the video.
I've got it - been great so far - no compliants from me.
How have you found multiplayer?
@@n64glennplant Thats the one bit I've not tried yet - and probably won't use! I didn't have much time to spend on it, however it was better than I expected - but maybe thats a reflection on not expecting much tbh! I'm at the stage where I want easy gaming - setting the n64 was always a faff.
@@n64glennplant The pricing does seem off though - I said I'd do a year and see how it goes. If they don't add much content, then I won't miss knocking it on the head in 12months
I’ve always been interested in n64 and was happy for this to happen, and cuz I’m in UK it was a 15 quid increase so I thought no big deal. Welp it isn’t great but I think star fox works pretty well and I’m enjoying that
I’m glad to hear you’re sampling the delights of n64 - even if it’s in a way like this 👋
Love the Snowboard Kids ost in the background!
What an awesome soundtrack that is hey
Thanks for the transparency sir
You’re welcome
Why is it when I have the original Nintendo online subscription it’s 20$, and when I go to upgrade it’s charging me 46$!? It should be 35$ and then next year when it updates it would be the full 50$.Idk if anyone else has this issue
ive not heard of that issue, I know it was supposed to be pro Rota cost if you're an existing moment but this was a new pack on the new switch OLED for me. ive pinned this comment to see if anyone else can help you
Thank you I appreciate that, also appreciate the review, I was going to dive into it but came across your insights and decided to hold off until they fix the issues and add more titles
I think ( please correct me if I am wrong) if you already had a nso subscription then you get it upgraded to the expansion and you pay for a full year( until october 2022) 50$ minus the amount that gets discounted for the remaining of your original nso plan, so you get the 46.
There's an explenation on how much is taken off the subscription based on how many days you have left i have like 5 months left on the previous subscription so i payed 30 for it, read the terms it should be there.
@@raptros I dont understand then why when i have 6 months left(until end of may 2022) I have to pay 40 for a full year
I am hoping Nintendo makes drastic improvements for this service on the next generation console,we will have to wait and see.
I personally would rather see GameCube, wii and wii u games on a service like this.
N64 games just do not look good in 2021 ,nes, snes games hold up well enough to be enjoyed by many old school gamers I suppose.
I just can not see myself enjoying older games as much as others do.
I got the expansion pack myself. Honestly, since I don't have an N64 (Maybe I'll get one in the future), the expansion pack is helping me get excited to play retro games. I only just found out that the NSO version of SM64 has the BLJ, so I've been getting into 16 star speedrunning. The service is FAR from perfect, there are still many problems like with the button mapping and input lag on certain games, but I'm actually glad I got it. I never play the Genesis games though. I already have the Genesis collection on PS3.
Thank you for your review! I was looking forward to Mario Kart 64 online but I'll save my money and see how they sort this all out. Cheers!
Hopefully mario party superstars will be better
I know people complaining about
how its sad what gaming as become yet they still bought it.
I did this video a few hours after the service went live so hopefully I can discourage a few people from getting it right now
@@n64glennplant Honestly if i had a switch i would just put a n64 emulator on it
I don't like how emulated N64 games look so i'll just keep playing the real thing ;)
Me too
I was planning on getting it. But I’ll take your advice and wait and see if it improves
I think you’d be thanking me
@@n64glennplant I think it’s really cool that you responded to my comment. I’ve never had a response from the person who actually posted the video before. I wasn’t a subscriber before, but I am now
I ended up getting it as soon as it was available. I haven't played much yet, mainly cause I'm waiting for them to hurry up and release more. I would really love to see them add Jetforce Gemini. Don't know if that's gonna happen, but it's one of my favorite games of all time and I haven't even played it in like 20 years.
Hard to see if rare/Microsoft will do that seeing as it’s in rare replay but maybe a rare replay for switch could even tidally arrive
6:33 luckily for me. I got a copy of Genesis Classics for Steam for my PC.
Totally worth it, you can even inject the ROMs from that collection into Steam Retroarch for less thrills but more accurate emulation.
That’s a fun way to play
I'm waiting for more features like party chat and messaging. I'll pay the extra price for that.
this is pure greed so far sadly I think, just give these games in the normal bundle in my opinion
@@n64glennplant I hear you, man. Hopefully, Nintendo will see the overall light soon enough.
You'll probably be waiting till the next generation then
@@bareq99 I'd be happy to, honestly.
@Mugi I hope not.
Thank you for posting this video. The experience is quite shoddy. I only payed fo it because the service was offered to me at a major discount. Automatic renewal will be regular price, of course. The price will make it uncertain that I would pay again, and I certainly won't if they do not add online play with randos. That is what I usually do on my Switch.
Yeah I yes a shame you can’t play with random people
Thanks for getting this out so quickly. I haven't got the service yet, but will be, mainly because I have a family account with seven friends and I can then get it for us all for the equivalent of £6.50 each a year. If I had to pay the price of an individual membership, then I definitely wouldn't bother. Hoping they'll do something about the lag and slowdowns... but knowing Nintendo, they probably won't... I'm looking forward to playing Mario Kart 64 again, Yoshi's Story, and in the future Paper Mario and Banjo-Kazooie. Not overly fussed on what else is currently on there or has been announced so far though.
Paying subscription to play roms is a bad idea.
I already chose my path years ago. I have an N64 with the games I want to play.
And I don't trade it for anything.
I don't blame you when Nintendo pulls stuff like this, they should all be in the original no extra charge service for sure
Given the failure at hand, does anyone have any emulator recommendations? :)
From my experience, Project 64 really struggles with 3D objects. Maybe there's something better?
You know what's cool about this video? He's not dancing around the subject, just straight to the point I appreciate that.
Thanks - I like your mask ✌️
1:49 that's my big problem with emulation--it gives brand new players the impression that old games were just garbage. Nintendo's never been known for caring enough to get emulation right, either on their minis or virtual console, etc.
I just wish I could win the lottery, buy loads of n64 consoles and give them out to anyone who wants them haha
Which is why they are taking shots at free emulation now. It's cheaper to sue those doing it better than to invest in the tech to do it right.
that's bullsh*t. NES and SNES emulation on the Minis and NSO are pretty good.
@@JCO78 Yeah, N64 emulation has always been a bit shaky due to all the proprietary tech in the system.
@@magicowlofbacon9416 Nintendo has all the spec sheets and capabilities to produce better emulation than those that have had to painstakingly reverse engineer the console.
There is no excuse beyond sheer unwillingness to make a quality product.
Craaaazy people still pay nintendo for this stuff. Good on you for putting it through it's paces.
I’ll be putting the cost through business expenses haha
@@Banjoisawesome I've been playing Banjo on my switch the past few years, for free and works better than Nintendos crap official emulator. I'm sorry you'll be paying for this, but at least you'll be having fun when you can play Banjo again.
@@glimpus You can only use online by having emuMMC. That way they don't ban you. You don't lose anything other than the ability to play with others. They're not going to take your games away.
@@glimpus Yes EmuMMC will allow you to play the Switch offline mode and then you switch back to the sysMMC to play online with your account! I unfortunately softmodded mine before EmuMMC was in place :(

I WAS excited to get this service (mostly for Banjo Kazooie, when it comes out), but I am definitely going to wait to see if Nintendo can fix this. Thank you for your video! 😊👍🏻
Fhanks for watching Chris
I responded to the $50 price tag with cartoon sound effects of frustration. Thanks for letting me know I may be saving my money.
That is a good way to respond to them
I do really want to be able to play Majora's Mask on my switch. I'm not buying the service for now, but when they add Majora's Mask, I'll cave in
I think that’s by year end
I’ll get it when it haves Smash Bros and Paper Mario.
@@colinm4055 will be interesting to see if they do smash, they might be concerned with people enjoying it and cannibalising sales of switch smash
Consumer goodwill toward Nintendo does appear to rapidly evaporating and for good reason. Their free pass for continuous poor treatment of their customers, wringing them for every penny possible with fairly low value proposition in comparison to their competitors, is hopefully coming to an end. All the best and keep up the great videos!
lol not really. it's just a small vocal minority who complains about these things. the switch will continue to sell gangbusters unfortunately for you
@@JCO78 That's true.
Not really... Wii U was the EXCEPTION, NOT the rule. As long as their consoles are competent with quality first party titles, then they will still profit. Yeah, the NVIDIA chip was outdated even when the Switch launched, but the software ensured it wouldn't matter.
The only bad thing has been the Joycon drift. Everything else is totally optional.
Thanks for the review, I figured it would be less than ideal. Somehow we need to keep the pressure on for them to do a proper remake of Zelda OOT/MM for switch. At least that's my dream xD
Yes we bloody well do! 😁
I noticed some of the audio and music cutting out in the Mega Drive games that I haven't noticed natively, in emulation or the official Sega classics. Took a while to notice but Sonic 2 would have some instruments dropping when lots of sound effects play.
Glad to hear the perspective from someone who noticed the sega issues too
In the last 15 years of the video game industry I hoped we would have learned by now early adoption is exactly that. Adopting the earliest version of something that will ultimately (hopefully) get better. Thanks for the heads up Glenn but I still plan to up my service because I know it has to get getter so I’m trusting it will. Looking forward to future coverage from you as things progress (hopefully for the better!)
lets hope wave 2 of games like f zero will be worth it
Thank you for the review!
Your take on N64 emulation ranks very high IMO, so I am glad you decided to let us know your thoughts on it. Given what we're seeing here, I feel there are much better options out there right now to play/replay these games.
Yeah and all of those don’t involve giving Nintendo money for shoddy work ! 😄
AH man the snowboard kids sountrack in the back brings back memories
Big time
Honestly I was holding back on this service until I got an N64 online control in my hands, but your video convinces me to wait until you tell us the services worth investing into. Thanks for the video Mr Glenn
I was really excited to get zelda on my big screen again. As soon as I loaded it up and used the joycons I instantly was ready to turn it off. Absolutely horrible controls. I have a few pro controllers, while there is still slight input delay the controls were worlds apart from the joycons to just a regular 3rd party wireless pro controller. Way better without joycons in every aspect. I do feel the suspend saves are an easy cop out to never lose, but its always been part of the emulated service.
Everything you’re saying here is also how I felt - glad I’m not alone in seeing all this
Welcome to 2009
I dunno I’m enjoying Ocarina of Time no issues here, haven’t tried the other games yet though.
So am I! However it could use button mapping, especially because the N64 controller is still out of stock.
I’m sure the experience will be fine for casuals. It’s those who focus more on performance that’ll start noticing things.
@@aintthatapotofeffluck8926 I wouldn’t say I was a casual but perhaps I haven’t played enough of it, we’ll see.
Sadly, people are blowing some sound and graphical hitches beyond all proportion, and highlighting input lag and stuttering online when playing with people who have bad or unstable connections.
It's all people can talk about, never mind that games look sharper, better and brighter visually or that we now have fully portable, and online capable N64 games.
You have to dig really hard to find level-headed, balanced criticism online at the moment
Does anyone know if the N64 controller works on the Wii U Virtual Console (N64 games)?
After 2 years Nintendo added 23 more games.
Still no widescreen options (similar to Goldeneye) still no way to change those borders, and limited button mapping. (Can’t map the C buttons to other buttons)
What are your thoughts 2 years later?
Stopped using it after a few weeks, have real hardware which I prefer over nintendos lacklustre emulation efforts on switch. Hopefully one day they’ll put some effort into their back catalogue
I’ve been playing Zelda all night and having a blast, but I’ve been playing with the pro controller, and I haven’t had issues with Link steering to the right. There is a tiny bit of input lag but I’ve gotten used to that on the Wii U already. Aiming is so much easier now, far less sensitive compared to the Wii U gamepad. Mario 64 and Mario Tennis work fine too. Haven’t tried the other games yet.
There is still room for improvement though. Give them some time to update and add more games, grab a pro controller and maybe you’ll have a better time.
I want one of the n64 controllers most to see what they did to the stick as that could be a game changer
I having a blast too mate, my only concern is the B - A button mapping, I would like to have it in the original position as the original 64 controller.
@@msanchez1680d you can change the button layout in the Switch system settings and save multiple profiles.
@@muska34 VERY useful, thank you!
Thanks Glenn, its inexcusable Nintendo are doing this. I for one am going to hack the switch when i can be bothered to get around to it so i can finally use the system for what i bought it for -to be a portable retro gaming machine.
and absolutely nobody will blame you for that either - shoddy here from Nintendo
@@gregutz4284 I don't mind paying, they had a great system before with the virtual console. I'd happily use that, the thing is the switch has a gimmick which makes those retro games very appealing again. But not the way they are doing it, having to wait 4 years to play 9 n64 games and being forced to pay for animal crossing dlc and mega drive games. Never played animal crossing in my life and i have already bought a mega drive game collection thing on switch. the drip feed is a joke aswell. The switches online has just been lame from the off, lets not pretend otherwsie.
What you're seeing graphically is probably just the contrast between HD rendering and all the low-quality models and textures.
The high resolution brings out the details really nicely on high-detail and/or distant objects, but when things get too close, they look just as rough as ever.
Plus, most HUD elements and such are made specifically for 240p output, so they look really pixellated compared to everything else.
Yeah overall it gives many of the games a very odd graphical look that’s hard to digest when combined with awkward unmallable controls
@@n64glennplant I won't defend the controls, but try to hold off judgement on the graphics until you've spent some time with Rare's games in HD.
I can't remember if you've played the Xbox 360 versions of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, but it'll be pretty close to those- provided they don't butcher the emulation, anyway.
Kirby 64 should look nice, too. :)
Besides getting used to the controls I thought it wasn't bad. Briught back alot of nostalgia and memories. I've had fun so far with Zelda
Glad you’re enjoying it so far ✌️
Hope you enjoy it. Nintendo also made a Master Quest version of the game. But they already stated that they were unsure if they are going to make it available through the service or not. The game is a lot more difficult than the original game considering the screen is purposely flipped. They also think that a majority of the playerbase would not like it. It was made available to play natively through a bonus disc that they made for the Nintendo GameCube. The original game is also included on there as well. Nintendo already made Ocerina of Time run with good frame rates, maybe, but I guess that they are planning on not using it.
This is why I'll just stick to my PC with emulators installed with a vast library of games, even then there's ways you can play roms online without a subscription fee I mean OOT online is a thing lol nintendo behind as always.
and sadly we know they won't do a damn thing about this
I got it last night and honestly I am pretty happy so far. I don't have a ton of online friends so I haven't played any online multi-player yet so that may be part of why I am not disappointed. I was surprised by how many genesis games I didn't already have in other collections. Also $50 bucks a year is still the cheaper than many of the competitions online plans.
50 is an lot when people is already members!!!!
I've used emulation for many years across multiple systems and although sometimes it's pretty decent, nothing beats playing original hardware. The ONLY reason I would lay down money for the expansion is if the emulation was spot on. It appears not so I'll keep my money for the meantime until ninty sorts it out. Such a shame. I honestly thought the n64 expansion would be part of what I pay already (like the nes an snes).
Thanks for clarifying the quality levels, I was on the fence but not now.
Great video.
Thanks for the review. I really value your opinion on this since you know the n64 library inside and out. By the way, is this version of sin and punishment in english or japanese?
I’m coollin with it, can play Oot on the crapper 🚽Edit: you ain’t wrong with the awkwardness in Oot, thought I was the only one
now you mention it hahahaha
Get some mirrors and some longer leads and you can play all your N64 games on the crapper
Nintendo knew they f* up; Thats why you only can purchase a 12 month sub instead of a 1 month like with the SNES/NES service.
EXACTLY! thats so true
I am definitely interested in the N64 online service, I do hope they fix the concerns you addressed, lately I have been playing Tarzan on my phone, consumed by how difficult the game is to the point where I have to absolutely finish it, and this is one of the games I recently discovered like Dr. Mario and F- Zero X, so I need the N64 Online Service to work, because discovering games I may have missed in my childhood, being able to play multi play online, and the portability, is why most of us would be interested.
As for the Sega selection, better offerings in the future.
Why the hell would they put those pop ups covering your screen when they already have 20% on the screen left blank on each side?
I know right and as someone else said here it creates burn in on the OLeD screen
I purchased this, and I haven't had this much buyer's remorse in years.
The launch lineup is super limited, there's no customizability in display or controls (stick inversion in Starfox), no online with strangers.... It's so much worse than I thought possible.
The only saving grace is the family plan allowing me and a few friends to play the Animal Crossing expansion without purchasing separately... Though I almost wish I'd just done that.
This is without a doubt the greediest money grab I've seen from a video game company in years, and I'm ashamed I supported this.
Yeah it’s a big pass from me
Even with the animal crossing I thought they would include the full game for free. I never played that and I would have tried it if it was free to see what’s the hype. It’s just a dlc so I was like is the price 50 just because of animal crossing?
I got the Expansion Pack and played a bit of Ocarina of Time and blasted through the first dungeon.
For me, as someone who is excited for the Animal Crossing DLC and is in a Family Plan with other users/Switches that will play the DLC, there is value in the Expansion Pack for me. But, I can see why some people are dismayed with the price.
I didn't grow up with an N64 and I have never done complete playthroughs of Ocarina, Super Mario 64, or Starfox 64, all of which I owned on the Wii VC (and the 3DS remakes). Personally, I am excited to have these games and more N64 games to come on the Switch, as I just love the form factor and convenience of the console.
I'm not that interested in the N64 online multiplayer, but it's a bummer to hear your comments about it being semi-unplayable. Hopefully, it can be improved in the future.
As far as Genesis/MD, I normally wouldn't go out of my way to own those games (aside from Sonic 2), but as an added bonus to the DLC and N64, I'm excited to try out some classics like Castlevania: Bloodlines and Phantasy Star IV.
I would have preferred Gameboy games rather than Genesis, but hopefully those will come eventually as was rumored prior to the NSO Expansion announcement.
There's value for me as well. I never grew up with the N64 and Genesis and now I can play them. Also that means I don't have to go buy hundreds of dollars just to buy the consoles and the games for both of them. I am not all that interested in the multiplayer all that much to be honest. I just got for playing classic games and the Animal Crossing DLC. I can see some people frustrations about it, I understand it but you can't make people happy all the time and hopefully Nintendo will fix the issues very soon.
My kids and I played online mario kart 64 this morning on our own switches. I didnt experience any lag or slowdown. Ran beautifully
Has anyone tried it with a Gamecube Controller? From what I've seen the mapping matches the Wii VC emulator
Be useful to know!
I see they have different versions of some games what does the black background to some mean? Do the offer buffs or start farther into the game?
That’s pal or ntsc we have choice here in UK
