I have an 03 legacy with 270k miles and owned for 10+ years. Never opened the engine to do headgaskets. The trick with older Subarus is coolant flushes and oil changes. Newer ones past 2012 do not have headgasket issues. Mostly they have oil consumption issues past that until 2018. 2020 and up seem solid with the new FAs.

Please take no offense, I always enjoy the vids. Well, after enjoying the old air cooled motors in a 73 Volkswagen Beetle, its not that the rear cylinder didnt get enough air it's the fact the oil cooler would dump the excess heat across that cylinder. Hense why it was the one with the most issues. They tried their best with a new style doghouse which offset the exhaust of that hot air from said oil cooler towards the front out side of the sealed engine bay. Those did much better after that design change.
P.S. comming from a guy who had built his motor, 1641. Even enjoyed a road trip that was over 1200 miles each way in the middle of the summer in the southwest. One of the best road trips I have ever taken. Not to mention one of the best cars I have enjoyed traveling with.

The head gasket issues mainly pertain to the ej25, ej251 and ej253 engines. Which are very common engines on Subarus from the late 90s into the 2010s. Turbocharged and 6 cylinder engines typically didn’t have this issue. It wasn’t until the introduction of the fb25 engine (2013 in case of the Outback, I’m not sure about the other models) that the head gasket issues became much less common.

I had a friend that was the service tech manager and they were still having head gasket problems back in 2016. I had fewer problems with my early 2000's Beemers. @Perfect Pizza my mom had a 2006 elantra, then a 2014 n in 2021 she was going to get an elantra but i conned her into a crosstrek, 2.0 version.
They are super cheap for an awd, nothin on the market compares because in all other Japanese and esp Korean vehicles to get awd u generally have to get a pretty well optioned vehicle. With subaru, the base model has awd so that is the best reason to get a subaru. N they have also been using more n more toyota suppliers and toyota parts. They're constantly making deals with toyota, take their new ev vehicle. Its a toyota except unlike the toyota version, theres is ofcourse, awd.
Point is, subaru is moving more n more in a really good direction.
N u still cannot put it past previous owners that beat crap put of the subaru and possibly overheated them absolutely causing the head gasket to wesr much faster. If u drive a subaru gently (they do go decently and have okay handling for a basically budget awd, minus the high trims) and dont actually use the paddle shifters u might have, my 2010 outback has em, which makes no sense for real. It also has a tow hitch n was used pretty frequently with a 105k miles n is as quiet as ever. Did have a new water pump and timing belt kit installed at 101k miles. But, thats part of the maintenance of a subaru with that part, which is something they went away from, except what vehicle???? Yep u guessed it, the wrx's still have belts. Why? Because they can actually be replaced n the timing adjusted much easier and cheaper is why. Nothing to do with weight, as some might say.
If u have a timing belt subaru with 105k miles or more n that service wasn't completed, get it done. That can kill your car n about the only common failure that'll ruin ur engine.

@@StunnaDroppedYou idk, hers is fine, shes not keeping it longer than 5 or 6 years max anyway so who really cares if what u say is true. n my neighbor has one n all he ever did was change the oil n he's driven it around 130k miles before trading it in for around 10 grand on a trade n got a new one a few months ago. 1 that dealer wouldn't have paid 10 grand if they were not going to make money off of it. N i know for a fact he paid under 20 grand for it in 2013 idr what, but thats a hell of return as far as im concerned.
2, they have diff engine choices. So if u dont like the 2.0 u can get a 2.5L whcih would end up with the most common drive train subaru sells in the u.s. and its decently reliable. It still always comes down to maintenance. U look at people who really maintain them, n they dont do much besides oil n filter n tires n brakes n thats literally it.
Everyone knocks them because they did have some issues, every single manufacturer has a year or 2 that are terrible or designed engine that was not good the list goes on.
Their sales numbers were low and still are relatively speaking. They sell throughout all of the cars the same number that toyota sells of one car like the corolla for instance.
So when you look at toyota as a whole, every single corolla sold could be a lemon and subaru can sell 20k lemons n their average of shitty cars sold would be higher than toyota.
      They also sell cheap cars.
I've said it before and say it again. You cannot buy a base awd anything, anywhere else, literally. So they're perfecting what they have done for a long time. You make mistakes n fix em. N they've done a decent job at that i think.
Idt u can go wrong buying any modern subaru except the newest suv one, just because its new.
They've also been working with Toyota more n more and using a lot of their technology which is good (toyota has a 20 percent stake in em n thats a good thing).
Point is, ur wrong about that n idc what u read on Wikipedia. I live in a cold state, i cant drive 5 minutes without seeing 10 Subaru's. The majority are crosstreks. They are cheap af n have almost suv size but drive like a planted to the ground awd car. Around here, if u have a Subaru ur not getting stuck in the snow, assuming ur tires aren't bald. Theres plenty of mechanics in this area that are really good at working on them.

This is partially true, I had a 2002 Impreza that leaked oil not from the head gaskets but from the rear main seal. But at the same time my oil was turning out to be milky so it was leaking coolant somewhere internally into the oil.

What I find interesting is that if it weren't for the 2.5, Subaru could've had an extremely reliable engine platform. The 2.0 and 2.2 are so durable that there's a surplus of used ones, to the point where you can get a DOHC EJ20 with less than 60k miles for $1500.

They still blew gaskets way up to 2015 my. Still insisted on using thin gasket single layer on the NA engines. the Turbo and 6cyl engines had multilayer so it didn’t happen. I have a serious hard time believing Subaru didn’t want this to happen to make money on just out of warranty repairs.

If you have an EJ25 with the older steel shim head gaskets you can expect these to blow at 120 to 150 thousand miles. If you plan to replace them with Subaru gaskets, the EJ25 turbo gaskets are multi layer steel and won’t give you the same problem.

i think you did negative research my ej22 from the late 90s has never blow a headgasket and has 250k they used mls gaskets the main issue was ej253 in mid 2000s with the graphite gasket because of the coolant conducting and basically unplating the headgasket causing leaks. Old subarus where also less seseptible because the ej25 is an overbored ej22 so it has extremely thin cylinderwalls and tends to blow or leak under heavy boost or stress much more easily I personally have a graphite coated mls gasket on my ej225 because I'm lazy and they have to be replaced more often ie at all ~80-100k but don't require machining because of the graphite coating. But if I just ran a grounding harness this wouldn't be an issue.

not nearly to the same extent - anything later than 2013 is typically not a "problem" year. Interestingly other vehicles are having higher fail rates now, (Toyota pickups, Mini Coopers, some BMWs, the little GM turbos like in the Chev Cruze, etc)
