People are always trying to build a better mouse trap. Some of the older ones are the best. Think the trap needs a drop or 2 of grease to spin more freely.
Yeah, Just put some grease (thin lubricant) on the spot where the rotating tube will be, do not put it on the inside of the rotating tube because then it will get everywhere when you put it on.
Though you probably don't want it to spin too easily. it seems to work well being a bit stiff so the mice don't think much of it until they spend too much time on it
Your bad luck with the spinner, beside the friction, is the design. I firmly believe you could get a lot better results if only you could add 3 and not 4 spinner poles. In a Mercedes Benz symbol configuration. As this has a better chance of rotational fall and less counterbalance as you see with some of your footage, when two mice go on a different direction blade, thus counterweighting each outer and cancel the action.
@@angryboi801 How about if the container had about a foot of water in the bottom? I'm thinking something along the lines of a wheelie-bin sized catcher with some water.
A small amount of cooking oil in between the two pipes may have helped them rotate some. (cooking oil to both attract the mice and to keep them safe if they ingest it)
I came to this channel a while ago to be informed on pest control, and I’m still fascinated with even the variations on the rolling log trap. Please keep it up! I love this channel!
Shawn have you considered getting a 3d printer? Basic design software is pretty easy to learn and it's way easier to make sure dimensions are exact for smaller parts than cutting them by hand.
Not sure about Shawn's exact location, but instead of buying a 3D printer I would suggest asking around to see who has one a person might be able to use (a few public libraries have them) or joining a makerspace that has one.
If you want to make it more sensitive, pre-drill holes in the smaller tube to go under the spinning part, so there wont be any suction/airtight friction. This also allows you to theoretically apply lubricant from the inside of the piping.
A real lesson in "Mechanical Engineering". The presenter is resourceful and proficient, anticipating just about every possible requirement and weakness. An excellent step-by-step " how to ? " instructional video.
There is nothing illegal with making any patented item. The patent protects the patent holder from anyone else profiting from it. So you can't make them and sell them.
Brian Landers Wikipedia has citations, easily followed. In this case, one can follow reference 4 to 35 USC 71 at the Cornell U.S. Code web site, which spells out the law. I started with Wikipedia figuring it would be easier for most people to start with.
I'd drill some small holes in the ends of the paddles to fill with peanut butter. It would make the mice work harder for the bait & the bait would last through more mice. Multiple small holes would be better than a single one that can be emptied quicker.
I don't think that the 2 PVC pipes slipped on each other to make the trap sensitive enough. Perhaps coating the inner pipe with some odor free oil (canola oil) would increase its sensitivity. I also saw one mouse effect an easy escape by jumping up onto the paddle which was aimed straight down. It then climbed up and jumped out of the pail. I think it was the 1st mouse in the video. Overall, not one of the more effective traps. I think that if you'd coated the bottom of the pail with oil, that would have prevented them from escaping as well.
for the life of me I don't know why he just lets them go. Why even bother catching them unless of course you drive em a couple of miles out into the woods. Seriously though, there's probably 100,000 mice within a mile of his barn.....
@@muskokamike127 , I read some comments or an article somewhere a few years ago written by somebody who had tried dunking the mice in food coloring, for purposes of future identification, before releasing them a mile or two away from home. The same mice came back to the same house.
Spinning freely and smoothly gives them the idea before hand. Spinning slightly tighter, or 1 second late will get them on it and dunk. Which is perfect.
Simple trap, yet effective and cheap to make. Got to love it. Also if you have buckets laying around but they aren't that tall, you can get away with filling it with water and they won't be able to jump out for sure!
Is it bad I laughed when the mouse accidentally pushed his buddy in the bucket?- I can just hear this- “ITS EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF STEWART!!! THIS IS A LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION”
On the explosive mousetrap idea, I read somewhere years ago about someone using an ammonium compound that is stable when wet but explosive when dry. They would use a common spray bottle to spray it along baseboards and places where rodents ran, and let it dry. When the rodents ran on the dry compound it would explode like a firecracker. I can't remember the formula, but I would not recommend making it. It was very unstable when dry. It was one of those things high school chemists used to remove their own fingers with back when I was young.
Drill holes in the end of the paddles and fill them with pb. Makes it harder for the mice to eat it before getting dunked. Also some dry teflon spray on the inside between the tubes will help with it turning.
City folk with a question here; I remember one of the earliest video of his showing why he prefers kill traps buckets to live catch buckets, namely because lots of mice trapped in a confined space led to some pretty brutal cannibalism among them... Yet since then every other time he tests a multiple livecatch, that hardly ever happen, they bite each other for a moment at worst or just sit tight and quiet most times. Just wondering if it is because of of a lot of selecting editing, or if something else gives. :o sorry for the long post!
I think the difference is that he's putting padding in the bucket now, before he would put nothing or even some kind of oil to keep them from jumping out. And that's probably what stressed the mice enough to turn them aggressive. I'd just chalk it up to a learning curve, probably encouraged by RUclips's policies. His distaste for sticky traps seems proof enough that he takes no pleasure in an animals suffering, even a pest like a mouse, so I believe that its just the change in techniques that he has developed over time.
He did have one or more rats prey on the mice in a bucket trap some months ago. YT didn't like it or the followup bideo where the meat-eating rat(s) were targeted. So, not direct cannibalism, but predation has been an issue for him.
@@paulwoodman5131 He didn't have a chance to get to the bucket before the rats did! Wasn't my favored outcome either, but unfortunately eat or be eaten is part of nature's life cycle.
Shawn I have a question for you. Is your son a Cub Scout? If so, have you considered being a pack/troop leader? I’ve always pictured you as an ideal pack/troop leader.
If you put some silicone spray, or maybe a little plumbers’ grease, on the inside pipe of this trap, I think the outside module would spin more freely. Also, if the radial spokes were longer, the mice would have to climb farther out to get the bait, which would be more likely to make it spin. But then you might need a larger, or at least deeper, bucket to make room for that.
I am camping with Scouts (previously, Boy Scouts). I feel so guilty watching this video. Part of the bedtime routine at home....watching your vids with one of my cats draped across my chest, his gaze locked onto every mouse, rat, ‘possum, skunk, etc. Sometimes he will pat at the iPad screen, and once he even walked behind the iPad, looking for a critter! And here I am, watching, in my tent....alone! Oh, well. BTW, Carson is adorable!
Gnutzguy Also it would help to have little divots on the inside, about 4 so it can make a quarter turn, and the other side would have little humps, but they would be round and lubed, this will give the mouse a false feeling of sturdiness.
Put some powdered graphite under that spinning sleeve to lubricate it. Also, if you make the paddles tubes and then stuff peanut butter in the ends of the tubes, the peanut butter won’t get easily consumed or fall off.
Been using the simpler dowel baited with peanut butter over a 5 gallon pail with some RV antifreeze. Works all winter without freezing. Great for cottage. And the mice don’t get too decomposed after drowning.
Pretty neat little simple trap..I might have to try the water version since I don't live in an area where I can let them go far from my house..I live next to the woods so any I release would just find their way back in, and something THAT big I'd remember to check instead of how I do with regular store bought traps..which is they are so small I forget about them and wind up only getting them when I smell the dead mouse after it's been in there for a bit..not exactly the most pleasant or healthy thing..I don't mind feeding the critters that come out of the woods as long as they stay out of my house so just dumping the bucket next to the woods would work just fine for 1)watering the grass and 2) feeding said critters.
Excellent work Shawn, thank you for sharing. I did think that with the less-well-fed wild mice that the friction between inner and outer pipes resulted in a less sensitive response when the mouse explored the paddle arm. To combat this I thought that having the inner tube replaced by a simple smooth metal rod would improve the response, however I wonder if this would be TOO sensitive as the mouse is exploring the rotating section of the trap - so in my mind I would like to refine the inner surface of the rotating section of pipe with a series of very slight grooves that provide a set amount of resistance and stability on the metal rod so that the mouse senses that the surface is secure however the break-free force for rotation is very small, Hope this text is clear. All hail the development of the ultimate mouse trap. Good work father & son an excellent team effort. :-)
I just spent 55$ on an electric mouse zapper, seemed like a great idea until I realized the thing goes thru batteries at rate that is brutal on the wallet & the environment. One set of batteries yielded one mouse and a wayward cricket. Needless to say will be building a couple of these today! Thanks!
Turn down a 3 inch piece of wood to a snug fit into the PVC pipe. Drill the center to fit a length of rod ( 1/4 inch ?) Cut the wood into 6, 1/2 inch discs. Assemble it so that the center section spins freely. ( a couple of washers to keep this section from rubbing on the end pieces. This would be easy to turn using a drill press if you don"t have access to a wood lathe.
That's an effective trap as it is, Thanks Shawn. Replacing the rings with a dab of glue 1/16" away will reduce the contact area so the outer tube will rotate easier without lube. Abrading the tabs using 60 grit will help the bait to adhere. Good job Carson. Happy Thanksgiving to all your family.
I'd be interested in seeing a head to head of the top few traps. Whilst some are obviously more effective at working without fail, others might be better at encouraging mice by either being less alarming or making them more inquisitive. Could do like 3 at a time and see which wins over the period of a week or so?
I just use a bottle with a long neck. I put peanut butter on the cap threads and spray cooking oil on the neck. Don't put water in the bottom of the bucket, that drowns the mice by slow exhaustion.
Please upload more. Even if it’s not a mouse trap topic. Would love to see more of the farm and cool spots for your motion cam. I swear I’ve watched over 400 of your videos in like a week.
A way to improve on the spinning paddle mouse trap is that you should've used vegetable oil, or some type of oil to make it slippery, and put in the center of the quarter inch pipe that way it would roll easily and lighter weighted mice would still be able to trigger it and fall to the bottom.
If you put some plastic compatible oil between the cross pipe and the paddle tube it would spin much easier and the weight of the mouse will make it spin and catch them faster.
Attn: Shawn! Just a suggestion but, instead of wooden paddles, I would use metal rods with some kind of hollow plastic cones on the ends instead of flat paddles. The opening to the hollow should point AWAY from the spindle / axel, so that the mouse has no alternative except extending his (her) body all the way out to the far end to access the peanut butter contained within. The finished paddle assembly would something look like this: >---I I---< , where "I I" is the spindle / axel. Coat the whole thing liberally with WD-40 (made from fish oil, so it will attract vermin), which can also be used the lubricate the paddle assembly on the spindle /axel, so it spins more freely. Best wishes always, PH

People are always trying to build a better mouse trap. Some of the older ones are the best. Think the trap needs a drop or 2 of grease to spin more freely.
grease might be too thick, some very light oil would be better......many of them simply fell off as opposed to getting spun off.

Shawn, you should drill some tiny holes in the spinning part so you can occasionally squirt in some graphite to keep that puppy spinning smooth!

Assemble it so that the center section spins freely. ( a couple of washers to keep this section from rubbing on the end pieces. This would be easy to turn using a drill press if you don"t have access to a wood lathe.
Such a cute little guy . So precious .
My kitten really likes this one in particular. If only there was an 8 hour version of this so she has something to watch while I'm at work.
sounds like you need a moat around your barn with a spinning paddle bridge as entry to catch those vandals.
Please upload more. Even if it’s not a mouse trap topic. Would love to see more of the farm and cool spots for your motion cam. I swear I’ve watched over 400 of your videos in like a week.
Always love the videos where you show the process of building a new trap. Great one as always, hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving!
A way to improve on the spinning paddle mouse trap is that you should've used vegetable oil, or some type of oil to make it slippery, and put in the center of the quarter inch pipe that way it would roll easily and lighter weighted mice would still be able to trigger it and fall to the bottom.
The "Spin Cycle" sounds like a good name for this trap!
If you put some plastic compatible oil between the cross pipe and the paddle tube it would spin much easier and the weight of the mouse will make it spin and catch them faster.
Way to Go Carson! Your doing a great job Buddy!
A beer can on a coat hanger wire works very well. Spins really easily and holds peanut butter well.
Well do e Carson, good helper. I'm going to Lowe's tomorrow evening. Props to Dad for involving his son in this experiment
The mice getting away from your son was hilarious :D
