Marc, thank you so much. My aimless blanket bombing of the fretboard with all five positions of the A minor pentatonic has now become more controlled and relevant. Plus, I'm learning all the notes of the fretboard at a comfortable pace. This is the best course I have ever come across. Please keep going.

Phew, that was difficult!!
Initially I spent a good amount of time just finding where the A, D and E notes are in Box 1 and 2, also ventured into box 4.
Then, just practiced playing single notes keeping time and playing shuffle pattern.
Eventually I managed a few, a very small few, other notes but I was overthinking the next change and got muddled.
Tomorrow is another day.

Great lesson again. Playing over chords sounds so difficult but isn't when you know the root notes. Memorize three root notes and play licks. Big fun and instant success!!

What notes are best for each chord, excluding the root note of the chord, or it doesn't matter as long as I begin and end with the root note of the chord?
That's the topic of several different videos I've made, so not easy to answer in a single comment. It also depends on your level of guitar playing. So, for example, if just starting out playing the changes, then we just make sure we land on the root note of the underlying chord at that time, and the notes leading up to that point should just come from the minor pentatonic scale, and everything will be good. A slightly more advanced player may choose to land on a note from that underlying chord that isn't the root. For example, if we are playing in A, when we move to the IV (4th) chord, that will be a D. So instead of landing on the D, we could land on a F#, because that note is one of the notes in a D chord. similarly for the E chord, we could target a G# or a B as they are both in the chord of E. An even more advanced player may entirely change scale when moving chord. So over an A7 we could play A mixolydian. Then when the song over to D7, we change to play D mixolydian.
Wonderful stuff once again, Marc. You do such a great job. When we go to specific notes on the chord change, are we dropping into a specific scale? Major/minor?
Hi Rick - I'm glad you are thinking ahead, because this is the topic of lessons 5 & 6! Yes, you can change scale. You don't have to, but if you want to, I teach how to do that in the next two lessons. Lesson 5 should come out over the weekend. I'm just finishing up the edit on it and adding some on screen graphics to explain the concepts

Any particular reason why you are playing those root notes, as the notes are all over the fretboard? Easier and more practical to play?
I'm picking out the notes from Box 1 and Box 2 of the Am Pentatonic scales that I taught in the previous lesson. However, you are quite right, pick any of them from all over the neck
So whenever I'm playing riffs over the chord changes in a 1-4-5 progression the root notes determine which pentatonic box I will use for the riff?
That's not quite what I was trying to convey in this lesson. I wasn't moving to a different box. I was staying in Box 1 (ok, with the occasional little drift in to Box 2, but mostly focusing on Box 1). The point of the lesson, is that within Box 1, when over the A7 chord, the note of A should be where we focus most of our time. Then when it moves to D7, we stay in Am pent Box 1, but emphasise the D note. Then on on E7, emphasise the note of E within Am pent Box 1. I hope that's helpful.
If the key is A7, then use the Am pentatonic? or F#m pentatonic?
Marc, can answer this much better, you could see it as the F# minor penta but it would actually be an A Major penta, so your finger would be on the Root note A, then B, C#, E, F# same as F# minor penta, except you start with the A note instead of F#...

Well that's covered in Lesson 5! So, we're not quite there yet. You are right, you can use either or both, just don't use F#m/A major over the D7 chord as it'll class. We are tacking mixing major and minor in lessons 5 & 6.

I know how the Major penta is in theory but never used it,,,,well i have tried but it always sounds so wrong when i mix with the Minor penta... I just Love helping people if and when i can !!!
