  • A really well-done piece done by Lighthouse productions (1993) on the trials and tribulations of San Diego's most shining example of resilience. Since it's opening in 1925, Belmont Park faced several decades of going back and forth between fresh upgrades followed by years of decline. But each time the park was up against several developers, it persevered through really hard knocks and continues to operate as an amusement center to this day. and The park was at it's shining peak when in abruptly shut down in 1976. LOTS of footage of the old old roller coaster and park in action and a few news clips from the seventies when the park was in peril. I wish I could remember the name of the school that produced it, the credits got cut out.

Thanks for sharing this. It brings back a lot of memories. I was 12 when it closed in ‘76, but my friends and I loved it until then.

I always wondered who made the Giant Dipper model. Love that poem by Larry Himmel which still holds true today. I was born & raised here in San Diego and was lucky enough to visit the park before it was closed but to small to ride the Giant Dipper at that time :( But was there for reopening day and am so grateful to see it & ride it. Thanks for uploading this vid

A person stood up on the coaster in 1926 and died. I have the news article at my house.
Why is the coaster along Mission Blvd instead of the ocean. Almost all amusement parks locater their coasters by the water. My guess. Around 1915, Ocean Beach had their own amusement park. The roller coaster next to the ocean was partially destroyed by ocean waves.

    Hi Timothy,
I’m the guy who produced this video with my students at Stanley Junior High ages ago and don’t have a lot of any original footage. Any chance you have a VHS copy of this still?
    Thanks,
    Greg

I just went to Belmont Park for the first time today and rode the Giant Dipper. What a great thing! Nice documentary and surprisingly well done for 1993. Do you have the last several minutes, maybe to be posted as another video? I'd love to hear what the engineer had to say about mechanical work on this coaster, and see the end credits. Thanks to all involved in saving it.

There is a little more on the end, I have on DVD, I cut it right before Carol gave me big Kudos for having been the real inspiration for having saved it...I didn't want people to think I posted this for that.

I'm glad you had a great time on my Dipper! I still wish we were able to run more suitable trains on the tracks.
