Yep, I was there. I was 11 days away from turning 18. Sabbath, Deep Purple, ELP...easily my absolute favorite bands at that time and ALL on the same stage!!! Cal Jam will always top my list of greatest concert day EVER!
50 years of ROCK! Blackmore's sound! DC's voice, Glenn's screaming voice and cranking bass, Jon Lord's BIG organ and Ian's fast hands! WHA? Deepest Purple!..
Rock was so intense at that time that we can't believe this show took place just 5 years after Woodstock! Imagine all the songs, all the albums in just 5 or 6 years... Today it would take DECADES to match all that creativity from '69 to '74. Unbelievable...
50 Years ago and I was there, WTF. 16 years old, drove from Las Vegas and brought two girlfriends of mine along. To this day it was one of the best experiences of my life and I remember it vividly like it was yesterday so I’m definitely freaking out that it was 50 years ago. All the bands were great, especially Deep Purple and ELP. The sound was amazing, I was sitting pretty much in the middle of crowd semi close to the stage with the speaker towers behind me, the perfect sweet spot for the sound. I’m still a rocker and a working professional musician in Vegas to this day, going to the Cal Jam I guess has kept me young 😊. I remember there was a very attractive skinny girl sitting close by me that noticed I was totally checking her out, if you are her and you’re reading this hit me back, or have your daughter contact me 😅 Love, Davyo
We were there. Drove up from San Diego that evening. Was hoping to see some kind of long couple of hours special. A lot of us are in our 70’s now but, We Still Rock.
April 06th,1974, a historic day in pop and rock history: a then still unknown Swedish band called ABBA win the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton, England with "Waterloo", I saw it on TV as an almost 8-year-old (my first Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson, as it was called back then) - the starting signal for an incredible career and on that day Deep Purple played as co-headliners with Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the Cal Jam and 30 years later Jon Lord from Deep Purple and Anni-Frid Lyngstad from ABBA recorded songs together - sometimes the world is that small...
Was 21 years old drove from the valley with 6 of us and Girlfriends, man it was 95deg. That day greatest concert ever!!! California Dreaming.other great memories Grand Funk Railroad live at the Fourm..
Incredible. Outstanding. So emotional and into it. Deep Purple are not underrated but to some of the Gen Z'ers may be. Wake up younger GENS. Friggan Deep Purple! Listen to Highway Star cranked with a nice sound and close your eyes without any interruption. So tight.
I was there with my buddy, Chuck. We drove in from Las Vegas and spent the night at a friends place. We were 5 minutes from the Ontario Motor Speedway. Took the back roads to get there. Great time!!! Damn I'm OLD!!!!
I was 16 at that time and was there.. 50 years ago, I made my way to Ontario Speedway, right up front for the Greatest Day in Rock Music History ❤️Ritchie Blackmore threw his guitar out into the crowd and it went flying past my head 😮But overall My Favorite Concert of All Time for sure…. Thank you Cal Jam for a Most Memorable Day❤️✌🏻
Saw they on the tour as a fifteen year old teen with my one year younger brother on 23 march 1975 in DORTMUNDER WESTFALENHALLE. And we both have the original tickets ; - )
My musical love starts with "Burn" and of course with DC...until today. DC forevermore. ....and I have to say it once: Thank you DC for 50 years of great musical support!!!
From memory… Never been to California before, never been to America before… make him welcome, David Coverdale! What an amazing performance. I remember seeing this on In Concert in 1974, and I became a huge fan of Purple!
Great indeed! I mean, I love the Coverdale/Hughes/Blackmore songwriting. And I can only imagine how amazing spring 1974 was. Queen had their breakthrough with their album „Queen II“, KISS released their debut album, UFO finished recordings of „Phenomenon“, Rush released „Working Man“ etc. Along with all these amazing news around, this Cal Jam event must have been THE highly anticipated and electrifying festival for rock and hardrock fans. Simply WOW!!!!
as a 12 yr old and this being one of my first concerts it certainly set the bar very very high ,, i remember finally getting home and my folks just absolutely freaking out from what they had seen on the news they thought i for sure was just going to be lost forever ,, i just laughed
I wish I had that Stratocaster, beautiful piece, and performance was killer ,especially the getaway part (Blackmore called for a chopper) after the explosion
👏👍🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺🥰
Still brilliant.
And the funny thing is:
Glenn Hughes is STILL singing like this, 50 years on.... 😎👍🙏
He steals the show there, knowing that all others are already amazing!
Ritchie Blackmore is the master of guitar.
He sure is, my friend. The very best

Do you remember where the location was? South or North side of the 10 freeway?
Круто, я вам завидую , я только родился в 1979 году, привет из России🤟👍🤝🤘👌

I want to say south side, only because I was coming from Canoga Park. Heading south.
@@victhedude417 Thanks! I'll have to do some research because this event happened when I was 10 days old-so things have changed a bit!
How was the sound there?
50 years of ROCK! Blackmore's sound! DC's voice, Glenn's screaming voice and cranking bass, Jon Lord's BIG organ and Ian's fast hands! WHA? Deepest Purple!..

Prefer Mk2 but Burn is my fave Purple track! Work that one out! 😵
I think it's a better riff than Smoke on the Water.

You're probably right! Remember listening to this performance on the Friday Rock Show back in the day! 😀
