This is probably a cold take but neither team, Ohio State or Penn State should be looking to put their coaches on the hot seat. Day and Franklin are elite coaches and I can almost 100% guarantee the grass won’t be greener for those programs if they fire those guys
Franklin is not an elite coach!!!!! He's a good coach he beats the teams he has more talent than.. 1-10 vs OSU an elite coach would find a way to win 3-4 of those games IMO
Finally someone gets it. PSU fires Franklin they start going 7-5 instead of 10-2. Yeah he has struggled vs Ohio State but it turns out they are an incredibly hard team to beat, duh.
@@stretch141000 If a school like Indiana can create a season like it is having, then PS can as well. Franklin has 8 or 9 built in wins already, and has everything in place to win and compete against the best. It is a top 10 type of job. If the portal and NIL are utilized a coach can absolutely do very well there. Franklin has had 10 years to produce and has not come close to meeting the expectations that the school has.
Indiana is giving 2018 Clemson vibes. Clemson ran through probably the worst ACC we’d ever seen and people thought they were overrated because they played nothing but garbage. When they get to the playoffs they absolutely destroyed Notre Dame and Alabama.

I’m a Hoosier fan for over 40 years and agree. While I’m loving this year, we have a long way to go before we get cocky. IU OSU should be a great game for all football fans.
I’m not sure what to think of Indiana. Yes, undefeated, but no wins against a single ranked team. In fact, Ohio State will be their only ranked team on the schedule.
Here’s the thing with Penn State. They’re usually ranked about 7th-10th in annual revenue/profits. James Franklin is around the 12th highest paid coach in college football. Their athletic facilities are ranked around the 25th-30th range (they’re in the process of getting upgraded along with the stadium, though). The NIL collective is ranked at 25th. Their coaching staff salaries are likely ranked in the 13th-15th range, if not slightly worse. Football is a game of inches, so all of this, especially NIL is very important. Penn State needs to work on getting all these aspects into the top ten because it would allow them to potentially go out there and get a couple solid wide receivers. For instance, you would no longer have to rely on running backs being the top receivers against a top five team in the nation. James Franklin is competing at the exact level based on the resources that have been allocated to him. Even then, he’s come very close to beating Ohio State whose roster outmatches Penn State by millions of dollars.
This right here is everything. They went out and got Drew Allar and talked up his game and gave him no one to throw to. Ohio State tied up their TIGHT END and shut down the entire offense.
Interesting math-based excuse;-) Net/net, the guys in the trenches, who are usually not the big ticket NIL price tags, were the ones that determined Penn States success within tOSU's 5-yardline with 1st and goal. All of your numbers and math go out the window if you just look at that part of Saturday's game.
@@joesekel7908they didn’t score a touchdown because anytime they were in 3rd and long they had to run trick plays to try and convert. OSU brought Caleb Downs down into the box to straight man up Warren. And he locked him up and their offense sputtered all game. OSU stacked the box all game and left their perimeter guys on straight islands 1 on 1. You don’t do that unless nobody scares you outside on the opposing team. That being said, Alabama would be another argument, they’re probably somewhere between 5-10 for most of the things this guy laid out, and Saban won national titles each year. Being 10-12th in resources, and using that as an excuse as to why u never finish above 8th, isn’t really a good argument. He’s right about the lack of weapons constantly rearing its head for PSU tho
@@joesekel7908you do realize bend but don’t break is a real defensive strategy because teams know how hard it is to score in the redzone and you realize PSU only has a TE or they gotta run it it becomes super predictable and because OSU spends almost double on their roster compared to the lions it’s no surprise that predictability was easy for the buckeyes to prepare for
After Nebraska I really didn’t think Day and Kelly could pull it off in a week… I’m so amazed by this game. AND the run game coming back. This is nothing but good news. The only thing left is for Will to have a perfect game

@@oldben1800 It really was. PSU had six points on O. The pic 6 gave them their 13 and the Howard fumble took away 7 from OSU. Otherwise that's a 27-6 game. That's kinda what it felt like, didn't it?
I’m a buckeye fan, love Joel Klatt and absolutely hate Big Noon kickoff. Literally was only created for money not for the good of the sport. Everyone knows college football is so different and better at night.
"They haven't played anybody" is a valid statement when you're talking about ranking teams. Many, many people were picking Penn State over Ohio State. Do you know what Ohio State was thinking about PSU? That's right. It's perfectly fine, and even appropriate, to say when speaking of Indiana.
Yeah record matters obviously but we can’t act like stomping opponents who are at or below .500 is just as impressive as beating competitive opponents in close games
the problem is its not consistent. who did penn state play before ohio st? indiana and penn state basically had the same exact resume except one was ranked ten spots higher than the other. and can we stop acting like any team thats not top 10 is "no one". This was typical Penn State game play. Their offense is the same now as it was when John Cappelletti was their running back. They are a very solid second tier team.
@andrewgiegerich8211 The rest of their schedule is pretty easy. If they win out, they will be 11-1 and probably go to the playoffs. It would be hard for the committee to say no because the SEC teams have so many losses in comparison.
@fcon2002 there is about 5 teams in the sec that will get in before Penn State if the have 2 losses Just based on schedule A 2 loss team in the sec will have at least 1 if not 2 or 3 top 25 wins which Penn State will have 0 it's just strength of schedule

Has Ohio State's defense really improved enough to make a run. I feel like Penn State was not a deep threat to hurt Ohio State down the field with big plays. Any thoughts?
Ohio state has the 2nd best defense in college football. They’ve played the #1 and #3 teams and have a 1 point loss, away vs the #1 and was a half second from a game winning field goal attempt. The top 3 are all capable of winning it all.
@@maxchenault9503 they may have played the #1 ranked team but not the best offense. Their defense will be tested at home when they play IU who has the 2nd best offense in the country.
Noon Kickoff games ruin college football for fans. The numbers are inflated. Views appear higher because everyone’s at home watching the game because it’s to early for them to be out watching them. The night games get more actual views. The difference is most of the views at night are at sports bars and football parties with hundreds of people watching 1 TV. So every single view isn’t recorded.
OSU fan and alum here. We have not played a complete game yet. If our defense plays the way it played this week and our offense gets back on track, we can win the natti!
Joel, I'm not here to defend Will Howard as I would like to see less mistakes from him given his experience. But, as I look at the replay of his pick six in the 1st series, it looks to my eyes like Jeremiah Smith paused a bit at the sight of the defender and/or could have been a bit more aggressive at making an inside track for the ball. Am I imagining that? I would like to think that a seasoned receiver would have cut more of a shallow path to the ball upon seeing a defender in the corner of his eye.
Jeremiah has definitely made some freshman plays that resulted in interceptions… but.. he’s a freshman with incredible talent. Keep throwing that kid the rock.
Rewatched this a few times just now, I think youre right. Smith gave up on his route and also should have cut it a bit more shallow, but Howard shouldnt have thrown this. The better option might have been to Egbuka down the sideline 1 on 1 with PSU safety #6.
@@Blutzer Agree, but this was such a quick-hit timing play, that the throw from Howard seemed ALMOST baked...if there is ever such a thing. Again, not excusing it. As I typed above, I'd like to see less mistakes from an upper-classman like Howard. But, I can't help but to think that Egbuka or Marvin (last year) would have stepped in front of the defender. And yes, Jeremiah's talent is amazing. Anyone taking my comment to suggest otherwise, is reading something in that I didnt intend. But, if I am right, then Jeremiah needs as much coaching on that pick six as does Howard.
If kelly/day would stop calling the Same passes to the flat to start every game the defender might not have been ready for it. Especially since they haven't worked most of the time. Because everyone knows we are going to do it.
Like Indiana, Army has beat all their opponents by 14 points or more (even without their star QB last weekend vs a rival). Their schedule isn’t great but they’re winning just like the Hoosiers. Go Army!
Yes, and Notre Dame will stop them in their tracks. Notre Dame will finish 11-1 and no they aren't winning the national championship. They're just currently beating the kinds of teams they can beat. That'll end when the playoff starts.
yeah but everyone has roasted IU for their strength of schedule and Army has a SIGNIFICANTLY worse strength of schedule.... Their average opponent ranking is at a 65 currently.
As a Buckeye fan, I feel compelled to defend Penn State's three up-the-gut runs in the final goal line stand. Ohio State's best defensive guard, Tyleik Williams, a future first round pick, had just been hurt earlier in the drive and had been replaced with an interior defensive lineman from the deep reserves. It's not unreasonable to have believed the defense would collapse in at least one of the interior three runs.
It’s okay Joel. OSU starting DT Tyleek Williams wasn’t playing still. It was OSU backup DT that PSU couldn’t move to get in for a TD. OSU tried to give that game away and still won. See you in 3 weeks for a top 10 showdown to determine who’s going to face Oregon.
I love how no one talks about oregons first touchdown wasn’t a catch. Then Michigan had a chance to pull within one score on a failed 4th and goal with 8 min left in the game. They played much better than I expected our run blocking is cheeks and the secondary looks like JV high school.
I was waiting for this convo as well and it....never came up? I thought every touchdown play received an automatic review from the booth...sure would like to know what happened there.
22 minutes on that terrible game, where the supposed third best team in the country doesn't score an offensive touchdown at home. Neither of these teams are as good as JK thinks they are. I mean JK spent all last week telling us how great Clemson was. It's a new era Joel and you're still stuck in a pre-portal mindset.
Bad as Beck is playing at Georgia, currently, he is still playing better than Quinn at Texas (I am a Texas fan). Unless Beck and Quinn get their acts together, neither will be going deep in the national championship tournament. Texas looked weak against Vandy and Georgia was on the way to losing to Florida until the Florida QB went out with a hamstring problem. The SEC is not looking like the dominate conference they typically are. There is a lot of balance in the SEC. Even Vandy and South Carolina are dangerous.

Hey Joel, love the show and love it when you and Gus get my Buckeyes! I don’t think you’re wrong, Indiana should be higher but they don’t have an actual win. So I don’t think they should be lower in rankings bc of it but. They are simply speculation to be a top 5/6 team in your words until they play a team ( say us in a couple weeks ) and I think Miami is in the same boat. I don’t dis-credit them. But not gonna value them until they can prove it. And with your one point about how “ it’s a brand and if it was OSU OR UGA they wouldn’t be questioned” I think that is just because we’ve done it for so long. We simply don’t lose or struggle vs unranked teams. As where Indiana and Miami have choked in a recent past

Indiana will get a chance to prove themselves against Ohio state and they’ll be ranked high if they win
I said it last week, for the Buckeyes to win Ryan Day needed to put his ego away and start Hinzman to get the line right. Hinzman had played guard in High school and was a very good center but he ran his mouth the way Day didn't like and put him out of the doghouse. He's out now! Hinzman was great.

@@ChefMaal7and how far down were they at cal??? Miami will be humbled very very quickly in the next few weeks
Love the show Mr Klatt.
You are so right blaming Franklin is the easy cheap answer but the problem is PSU is never good enough

Ohio state has the 2nd best defense in college football. They’ve played the #1 and #3 teams and have a 1 point loss, away vs the #1 and was a half second from a game winning field goal attempt. The top 3 are all capable of winning it all.

That pic 6 was more of just a great play by the defender than a mistake by will howard

Puhlease. Imagine never playing a real team but the entire country crowing about you. Be real😂
Miami is fool's gold.
I get the Indiana thing but to compare their situation to Georgia and Michigan last year is ridiculous. The reason those 2 teams got the benefit of the doubt despite a weak schedule was because they made the playoffs in 2022 not because of their brands.
Joel you made me some money this weekend hit all the picks AGAIN!! Where can I make a donation
You can give Miami’s defense credit in the 2nd half looked totally different
It was better but even after generating 4 turnovers they still allowed 31 points and 6yds per play. Thats wild
@ no after generating 4 turnovers they gave up 0 points
I’m a big ten fan and Penn state is a solid team, and notre dame at Penn state is an unbelievable playoff game….but I can’t see how they deserves HOME playoff game with 0 ranked wins (Illinois was ranked when they played but is no longer ranked). Their best wins is say are Illinois, Wisconsin and USC maybe?
Gotta play the schedule you’re given
Klatt, you are wrong on Indiana. They don't get the same level of respect or benefit of the doubt because they haven’t been consistently good for years, as a result SOS and SOR should matter more for them because they are not a Georgia, Ohio St, Michigan or Bama. You get that respect by being consistently good year in and year out, something Indiana hasn't.
That’s the problem…you don’t rank teams on what they done last year. Have to get that out of people’s heads
@@davidbillups8923 I don’t disagree with you, but Indiana has not played any team of the caliber of teams like Georgia or Notre Dame or Penn State, or Alabama, or Ohio State or Oregon, or Texas, etc., etc.
Let’s see how they fare against Mythagain’s defense and go from there.
Just so we're clear here. After 9 games:
Michigan '23 PPG: 41.9
Indiana '24 PPG: 46.6
Michigan '23 Avg. Margin of Victory: 35.2
Indiana '24 Avg. Margin of Victory: 32.9
Michigan '23 Opponent Record: 36-44
Indiana '24 Opponent Record: 34-45
Michigan '23 RZ Efficiency: 88.2%
Indiana '24 RZ Efficiency: 94.4%
Michigan '23 Turnover Margin: +11
Indiana '24 Turnover Margin: +11
Michigan '23 3rd Down Conversion%: 60%
Indiana '24 3rd Down Conversion%: 60%
Michigan '23 Plays of 20+ Yards: 45
Indiana '24 Plays of 20+ Yards: 50
Michigan '23 Time of Possession: 33:15
Indiana '24 Time of Possession: 32:45
Michigan '23 Penalties: 4.4/38.9 YPG
Indiana' 24 Penalties: 3.9/35.6 YPG
Through 9 games, Michigan was AP #2 and #3 in CFP playoff.
Texas, Miami, PSU all are teams without a ranked win this year.
You are biased to the helmet, you are biased to the brand. Watch the games.
@@AA62185😂😂😂😂😂😂 thank u for that ive already copied for future use😂😂😂
@@davidbillups8923I agree for the most part but if you do that you’re underselling the coaching staff that’s still with the team and the returning players
Scheduling inequity is a real issue. Take the Top 4 in the Big 10. Ohio State plays each of the other 3 (2 on the road), but none of the other 3 play any of the other Top 4, except their games against Ohio State.
yup, OSU always gets the short end of the stick but nobody talks about that. How tf aren't any of the other top teams playing each other. I guess if OSU wins out they can say they're the most tested team in the BIG.
This is the first year that IU hasn’t had to play the 3 B1G powerhouse teams since they finally got rid of the divisions. While their schedule turned out to be easier, no one expected Michigan to be so bad. I’m sure next years schedule will be harder, for IU and everyone who plays them.
@@patjhowardWho didnt think Michigan would be this bad???
Ohio state wants Oregon on a neutral field… bad
It took Oregon their very best football at home against an OSU not playing at their best to win by 1 point.
Chill
You wont beat Indiana.
Oregon did not play their best in that game, they left too many points off the board.
Joel, I thought the same thing when Will was spouting off last week. Not only does that get him nothing, it can be and was a detriment to his play.
Michigan lost half their team and coaching staff. Not sure why Penn state hasn’t fired Franklin yet? They must be content with just winning the mediocre games
Yea it’s getting ridiculous
It’s a slippery slope for a winning program to fire their coach. The replacement needs to be at least just as good. That’s hard to do.
I agree Coach K’s play calling in the goal to go situation was awful, but Franklin needs to be taking way more of the blame for this.
You are the head coach. Call a timeout and tell your OC to get the ball to Warren. I get trusting your guys, but Coach K called the same play 3 times in a row when we couldn’t move the ball on the ground all day.
The whole “fumbling out the end zone” being a touchback is stupid . It should be placed at the one. You fumble out of bounds anywhere else on the field you retain possession. Shouldn’t be any different
Uh, no. Just don't fumble
Yea that’s a touchback. Sorry to break it to you
Joel, I love your stuff, but it's not just Penn State fans that hate noon games. NO ONE likes noon games unless they're casual CFB fans.
Yeah I don’t even like it for Michigan Ohio state and it’s the tradition. I would love to see a late afternoon or night “The Game”
BULL !!!!!!!!!!
i'm anything but a casual cfb fan, and i still have my virtual ticket to NKU row 81 seats 16-18 from Saturday to prove it, and I love a sun-splashed fall afternoon football game. btw, tosu is 5-2 in night games at psu since '05 (was there that night too; initial white out game that the bucks played in, as well as '07, '09, '14, '16 and '18)
