We are getting SO CLOSE to calling the building permit office and scheduling our inspection that will clear us to move into our house, but first we have a few projects to complete.
We’re super excited to get the go ahead to move into the house, so we are pushing to finish these last few projects.
Follow along as we complete a handrail for our interior stairs and start the stairs to our deck.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

We are currently doing a similar build. We did have it framed, roofed and sheathed. The rest is on us. Still a little bit of electric to run in a few rooms, but in the process of staining, sealing and shiplap installing on our own time and dime. Just sold our old house as well and been living the camper life for two years. Driveway and septic were two of our firsts as well.
Congrats! It's quite a journey, but the fact that we'll have zero mortgage at the end of this process is a big motivating factor for us.
Good morning guys!! How are you both? Well l am praying!! When l first saw your title l thought to myself what a load of BS!!! There is just no way that your house isn’t safe!!! If you look at the way you have constructed your home there is just no way that it’s not safe!! It’s a palace! You should be so proud of yourselves!! As per usual l sit here like a very proud Mumma watching you go from strength to strength on your build. It’s a house built with love…..the best building material ever!! Thankyou once more for allowing us to see more of your journey. As always l am thinking of you all. Oh by the way how did your son go at the track meet?? If he’s like Ryan he would have done well even if he didn’t win a prize!! Take good care. Love to you all. Big hugs!
Thank you for always cheering us on! We are getting so close now. Our Son did well at his track meet and I think he'll continue on next year as well.
Great video! Love what your building! I’m years late coming across your channel but I’ll head back to the start binge watching from the beginning!!
Glad you found us. Comment along the way as your binge watching. It’s fun to follow along as you catch up.
The concrete work is impressive
Thanks. I was a bit scared because it was really my first time doing concrete other than our pad we poured for mr.cool. I bought a mag float so hopefully next time it will look even better. I think I may have mixed the concrete a little too wet as well.
If you mix sawdust from the railing (or a similar wood so it looks the same) with glue and put it in the gaps of the railing you made then when it drys you can sand it and it will almost disappear.
Getting closer to move in. Thanks for sharing
Getting so close. I think it may really happen.
Glad to see you were able to make it past two more projects toward your goal.
Anxious to see you do the deck stairs and probably more railings 😊
Yep! Both of those projects are coming up soon.
I think you've done amazing job on this house I don't care what nobody says I love it
Looking great 👍
Awesome progress.
Thanks!
Bannister is the correct name for the handrail. 😊
Super gemacht einfach Spitze Danke Gruss aus Germany 👏🏻👋🙂🙋♂️🇩🇪🤗😊
Slow and steady. Looking good!
Thank you. I think we will actually live in this house now. It's finally all coming together.
The right way s the one or two or more that work - well work for you anyway. Cheers.
If you know he is going to swing you need to make one of the screws longer to add additional support
Good point. I'll see if I can find a longer screw that matches.
Desde Uruguay 🇺🇾 saludos 😊😊😊
You will need to coat or seal the Bannisters really soon as they will soon look dirty!
Good point. We will be sanding, staining and polyurethane the hand railings. But thank you for the reminder. Maybe we'll put something on them until we get to that project so they don't get dirty.
🎉🎉wow!!!
Don't you want to turn the concrete pad frame?? Am I way off?
in the UK its called a banister 😄
Thanks Tracy. I thought that was it. Nobody seems to use the term much anymore.
Do you really need the second railing for the smaller set of steps even though the other railing doesn't have any post interrupting the rail?
I think the part that isn't covered by the othe railing is that it isn't "graspable". I'll ask the inspector thought when he comes.
OMG I'm overjoyed to see you partnering with Betterhelp!! So huge for you guys and I'm so happy for you!!
I started watching your series because my husband and I were working on a multi-year project and didn't know anyone else doing so :)
How is your project going?
Yes, a bannister
Good job yous are getting closer
So far a very nice job. You are almost done.
So close!
Where do live??
We live in Washington State.
