      Her going from desert heat to temperate cold is really interesting for me. The way she has gotten 'chunky' compared to her desert siblings & mom shows how versatile goats are as livestock. The husbandry of arms family homestead making its methods to the acres is going to be interesting. Meat goats vs dairy goats or rather miniature dairy goats. Wonder how well spanish bloodlines would do as milkers? How much better are the feed costs vs a 'full' sized
      dairy breed (alpine or nubian) I wonder. I think its neat to see how popular goats are on the tube & homestead. Still looking like the pigs are winning the meat animal for a homesteaders. Given a reliable source of annual feeders. 👍

    As a little kid we had a rooster that always chased me. One day i saw my grandfather butchering him behind the corn crib. I cried and cried for the rooster😭. Ive had a few like that during my time. I just kick them back and dont let it bother me. For some reason i respect the protector rooster. He would attack a predator also. Just my 2 cents again🤗

    • @Bamboo4U2
      @Bamboo4U2 4 года назад +7

      It depends on how small you were when you were attacked. Most parents (grandparents) err on the side of caution and won't give an overly aggressive rooster a second chance at you. A little child could be mauled by a rooster.

    • @ubetchya78
      @ubetchya78 4 года назад +3

      @@Bamboo4U2 Absolutely. A toddler or small child could easily get pecked or clawed to the face, leaving permanent scars, or even loss of eye(s). A competent (grand)parent would err on the side of caution, before a child has lifelong scars and trauma.

      @@ubetchya78 Could not agree more. An aggressive rooster that flies in the face of a 5 or even. A 12 year old can be both traumatizing AND dangerous.

      Exactly a semi aggressive rooster is good for predators, my rooster the other day fought coyotes letting the chickens get away saving them. he ended up giving his life for them in the process. (That’s why we kept a 2nd rooster)

    I have a reccomendation for Makinf Roosters friendlier. Having Multiple roosters Helps the rooster be friendlier. And also Handling them A LOT as chicks helps. I have 2 Breeding roosters, One store bought and one Hatched and They're absolute sweethearts. My hatched one is the store bought's son, The store bought was handled a lot by me and he's a gentle giant.

    You've failed that rooster unfortunately. You kept him cooped up in the green house for months then in that little coop for months on end. He's aggressive because he's had a miserable life. You should have socialized him more but you wanted him to breed and only that. Poor guy, you guys need to be the aggressor and not tolerate it. Teach Olivia not to be fearful of him. The rooster is protecting his flock, they do that if they're good roosters.

    Well, it looks like you’re getting MY weather. It’s 1:15 in the p.m. and I’m in 105* temperature. And my garden doesn’t like it. 😫😫. But I’ll keep on trying. I like the Arizona area, but my garden doesn’t.

    Unbelievable weather!🤪😜🤯 I went 15 eggs with Livies and we were right if you count the eggs from Rusty's girls. Hope being a mama just warms my heart! Hearing you say you need to get rid of some does in the future sounds sad but I know you have to do what you have to do. 👑🐈

    Rusty most likely is attacking you because he sees you as a threat to his precious girls, as well as boredom frustration from being cooped up all winter. A truly MEAN rooster is a rare thing, and as long as he's not chasing you around the yard desperately trying to sink his spurs into you, you've got a good chance of taming him down. I see a LOT of disturbing (and unnecessarily violent) advice posted here, which is why I'm commenting on a youtube video for the very first time.
    There is no point in humiliating or risking injuring Rusty and forcing him to think that you are the "flock boss" because you're not. You're a human, not a chicken! He's the one in charge of protecting and mating the hens, and you want it to stay that way because he's with them 24/7, not you! When you interact with the flock, just stand your ground, scoop him up and away with your boot if he attacks you(try not to kick, you certainly don't want him injured), and occasionally walk "through" him (make him step out of your way). This will teach him that fighting with him isn't worth your time. Immediately after dismissing his attempts to challenge you, offer him and his girls food/treats to help him understand you're a source of peace and snacks. That's all chickens really want, after all.
    If you have time to do it, having him sit on a towel in your lap every evening for a few episodes of your favorite tv show is how I tamed my most aggressive roosters. I've got two bachelor flocks, one with 10 breeding roos and one with 6 destined for the freezer (through no real fault of their own), as well as one that lives in my enclosed patio because he likes people better than other chickens.
    If you can't get him to settle down after a couple weeks of patience and kindness, he may very well need to be culled. Just remember not to put human emotions on him, as tempting as it may be when he frustrates you. All he knows is how to be a rooster and if you look at him objectively, he's doing a very good job of it!
    I wish I was closer, I'd take that handsome boy off your hands in a heartbeat! Best of luck with him, I hope he comes around quickly. ❤

    Hey Al, My mother in law broke a chicken from wanting to set all the time by grabbing her and holding her head under water in a bucket till she almost drowned her. That was funny but it worked. I guess she figured if she drowned she would just go ahead and cook her up and make dumplins. Same deal may work with Rusty. If that didn't show him who's boss nothing would. Don't be gentle with him. Make him think he's going to die. Then turn him loose and start chasing him and if you catch him grab a hold of him and flip him on his head with your finger like you are pecking at him kind of like he would be pecking you. Give him a hard way to go so that he knows HIS fate lies in YOUR hands. Good luck with him. Great video. BTW, I don't think I would video showing Rusty who's boss. As much as I would love to watch it (I would probably die laughing), you probably better not.

    I’m sorry about Rustys attitude. I had a grumpy rooster for a while too. Every time he came after me I began picking him up, hugging him and talking to him. Maybe I seemed too needy because it wasn’t long and he’d run when he saw me coming. 😂

    I've watched all of this because of Hope only.And when I got to the point of cooking eggs in the slow cooker ...I wish u the best in all of your hard work. I still cry about my favorite Hope.Her mother rejected her ... And that family as well, by sending her from worms to freezing...

    Moose is kick. Your chickens have entertaining personalities. Certainly adds to the fun of your channel. I believe having conversations with our animals increases human awareness. Good for them and us. Enjoy your day. Maybe Rusty is just tired of all the constant chirping. That's a lot of chicken racket. I can just see him perched somewhere quiet letting out a sigh of relief. I'd have a hard time taking care of too many animals and they'd all live to ripe old ages. So
    I'll just enjoy your journey from afar.

    Suggestion for grumpy rooster: when he gets aggressive pick him up hold him under your arm like a football. Walk around talk to him until he relaxes, put him down. If he tries again repeat. Have Olivia do the same. Always make them yield to you. Walk towards him dominate him. It take just a few tries and my aggressive roosters have stopped attacking me and others. They learn respect!

    I had been going for 16 for quite awhile but since that didn't happen I chose 13. Yea!!!! I loved seeing the pigs on the run....one holllering "wait for me". I like the area you fenced off Rusty and his ladies. They look like they are enjoying being out doors. Their fencing is is great also.
    I'm not a homesteader by any stretch, but it seems to me Premier Fencing has the best products on the market for homesteaders. There fences sure hold up to a lot of handling. The salad looked wonderful Gina and though I don't care for hard boiled eggs, those were beautiful. I hate seeing a dark ring around the yolk from cooking too long. Y'all have a Blessed day.

    Just planted cucumbers hot peppers yesterday and today we planted bell peppers and tomatoes, corn and pumpkin or squash. I am going to try to plant zucchini in a bucket (I can't remember what it's called right off the top of my head) but Daniel Arms from Arms Family homestead does it and a few other's.

    I hope "Rusty" calms down a bunch. He has been so aggressive toward You Al, maybe because you're another male. He needs to learn YOU are the "Alpha Male" on the homestead. Homegrown is the best!

    Al, it’s so nice to see you all working in the sunshine. That’s probably preferable to falling on the ice or freezing because of freezing or blizzard conditions. Your place is just beautiful in the summer weather you are having. Thank you for all of the work you do to allow us to come along.

    I so L O V E your channel and look forward to having my coffee with the family and animals and have been doing so for about 1 1/2 years now only to find out my brother does the same thing and we live 100 miles apart! I fully understand the Rusty issue as my aunt had a very aggressive rooster and my uncle refused to dispatch of it. It would attack people as they got out of cars or left the house, it came to an end at the end of an iron spoon used to slop pigs wielded by my mother... :-/ I would think strategically placed sails would be a kindness for all the animals for shade in the large pastures, and... Watching Gina make the salad made me think to recommend she add Cobb Salad to her cookbook when there's left over chicken in the summer, such a treat and looks delicious to the eye as well.
